This course traces the development of Western art from the Renaissance through the modern period, exploring the major movements, artists, and works that shaped the artistic landscape from the 15th to the early 20th century. Students will study the evolution of styles, techniques, and themes in painting, sculpture, and architecture, considering the cultural, political, and technological influences that drove artistic innovation. Attention will be given to figures such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Monet, Van Gogh, Picasso, and others, as well as the broader historical context in which their work was produced. By critically analyzing landmark artworks and examining shifting aesthetics and philosophies, students will gain an understanding of the rich visual heritage that underpins contemporary art.
