Introduction to Sport Psychology explores the mental processes and behaviors that influence participation and performance in athletic contexts. The course examines key psychological concepts such as motivation, confidence, anxiety, focus, team dynamics, and mental strategies for improving performance. Students will develop an understanding of how psychological principles are applied to coaching, training, and competition, and will analyze the impact of psychological skills training on athletes and teams. Through lectures, discussions, and case studies, the course prepares students to recognize and address the psychological factors that contribute to success and well-being in sport and exercise settings.

Q1) Deci and Ryan (2002) proposed that the environment created by the coach leads to psychological need fulfillment. They proposed three constructs, autonomy support, structure and involvement. Differentiate between each of these three interactional styles. In your response, ensure that the definition of each is clear. Answer: Autonomy support is a coaching style whereby the coach provides options and reduces pressure on the athlete. Structure is the provision of appropriate feedback and clear expectations for the athlete. Involvement is a sense of genuine caring. In an effort to differentiate between these three interpersonal styles, involvement can be seen a more overarching of global style of interaction with the athlete that may extend beyond the sphere of sport to take into account the individuals needs and wants. Both autonomy support and structure are more linked to the sport environment directly. An autonomy supportive style involves the provision of options or choices for select activities (e.g., ways to develop skills or fitness) and involves considerable planning. Structure is linked to feedback during and after performance of a skill, tactical maneuver etc. that are based on the athlete's ability and not that of others.
