Immunohematology is the study of the immunologic and genetic aspects of blood, with a particular focus on the principles and techniques involved in blood typing, blood group systems, compatibility testing, and the identification of antibodies and antigens related to red blood cells. This course covers the foundations of transfusion medicine, emphasizing the safe selection, processing, and administration of blood products, as well as the management and prevention of transfusion reactions. Topics include immunologic mechanisms underlying blood group incompatibilities, hemolytic disease of the newborn, and autoimmune hemolytic anemias. Practical laboratory skills are developed in serological testing, crossmatching, and resolving complex transfusion problems, preparing students for careers in clinical laboratories and blood banks.
