Course Introduction
Food Microbiology explores the roles, characteristics, and effects of microorganisms in food production, preservation, and safety. This course covers microbial physiology, taxonomy, and ecology as they relate to food spoilage, fermentation, and foodborne illness. Students learn about the detection and control of pathogens, beneficial uses of microbes in food processing, and the impact of regulations on food safety. Emphasis is given to laboratory techniques for isolating and identifying microorganisms in food samples, methods of food preservation, and the implementation of quality assurance systems in the food industry.
