This course explores the complex relationship between crime, law, and mechanisms of social control within society. Students will examine sociological theories of crime, the role of institutions such as the police, courts, and corrections systems, and the way in which laws are created and enforced. Special emphasis is placed on how factors like class, race, gender, and culture influence perceptions of criminal behavior and the application of justice. The course also considers contemporary issues such as mass incarceration, surveillance, and alternative forms of social regulation and justice. Through case studies and critical analysis, students will gain a deeper understanding of both the causes of crime and societies various responses to it.
