TABLE OF CONTENTS

The Belington Community Wellness Center weaves together careful material choice, sustainable practices, and intentional community interactions to craft an engaging and reliable place to enhance human experiences. Designed for the residents of Barbour County and its visitors, this wellness center was organized around three proportional data that direct users through the public and private spaces in a simplified and efficient method. Due to the site’s location in a flood zone, the building was raised three feet above the highest point in the elevation and held in place with thick retaining walls. Featuring multiple community gardens, gathering spaces, and public amenities, the Wellness Center provides a central location for local meetings, places to host events, and offices for on site staff.

The materials were sampled from the existing historical context and paired wiuth modern sustainable concepts such as a graywater system, solar panels, and gardens to create a low-impact building that seamlessly merges with downtown Belington. Overall, the design of both the bulding and the site itself is engaging to users, accessible to all generations and walks of life, and respectful of the small town charm of Belington, West Virginia.

The Fairmont Public Library was conceived as both a senior capstone project and an introduction to an alternative method of architectural design. Rather than beginning with traditional site analysis and programming, the project was driven by two randomly assigned action verbs and exploratory diagramming. Using the words “entangle” and “interact”, the library was designed to reconnect the Fairmont community to learning, nature, and one another. Materials common to the town’s vernacular, paired with the pervasive inclusion of flora, entangle the building within the natural environment and the broader context of the site. Exterior multi-tiered public spaces and expansive window walls promote interaction with the landscape, while the open floor plan and balcony encourage community building and interpersonal exchange. The primary space is organized around a central column of light created by a massive skylight, providing clear views of the sky above. Mirrored L-shaped wings house library stacks and meeting rooms, forming rounded bump-outs that contain public study spaces, a café, rooftop gardens, and outdoor gathering areas. While hidden, the water collection system and stack vents help to sustainably care for the visitors and the plant life. Together, these elements establish the library as a civic space rooted in interaction, connection, and place.

Adaptive reuse and development projects make up a large portion of architectural work, and thanks to the growing interest in sustainable building choices, the trend is predicted to continue gaining popularity. This project proposes the revitalization of a site along the Monongahela River by Palatine Park, promoting the exploration of new materials, modeling methods, and community engagement. Currently standing as an overgrown and abandoned hillside, the site presented multiple challenges, including a crumbling existing structure, drastic topographic changes, and a large drainage ditch cutting through the upper half of the property. The existing warehouse has been adapted to feature a small café, rentable offices, and a community makerspace with an attached display gallery and market space. A small eight-unit apartment building reflects the makerspace on the west boundary of the site, and a reimagined green space hosts fire pits, seating areas, and a rail-trail rest stop for the community to enjoy.

SITE PLAN

EET AUBURN STR

The site has been developed into a sprawling community garden, connecting the three primary areas through angular pathways, specific plant choices, and statement-piece bridges. Careful consideration was given to the existing ecosystem through the green roof, water managment systems, solar panels, and preservation of native growth. To encourage engagement with the garden, the partially demolished patio was reintroduced along with rooftop terraces, balconies, and new seating areas integrated directly into the landscape. A true test of problem-solving, this revitilization project pushed the envelope of creativity and presented the challenge to think beyond the existing structure to design something impactful.
