Zigzag vs Straight Stitch Needle Plates If you have an embroidery machine it most likely came with both a Zigzag needle plate and a Straight Stitch needle plate (also called a Scant Stitch needle plate).
The Zigzag needle plate has a curved needle opening allowing for both straight and wide stitches.

The Straight Stitch needle plate as a small needle opening designed for embroidering and straight stitching.
We see a lot of sewists use the Zigzag needle plate for everything, never changing to the Straight Stitch plate. While this works most of the time, there can be inconsistencies in the stitching. PFAFF and Viking recommend always using the Straight Stitch plate for embroidery, and any type of straight stitch. Their machine calibration tools do not allow for calibrating the embroidery arm with the Zigzag plate installed. The embroidery machines are calibrated to embroider with the Straight Stitch plate only. Using the Straight Stitch plate when embroidering will yield better, more consistent results in your stitching. Get in the habit of using the right plate for the stitch.
