Hello McGill Law! Being EIC of the Quid comes with many responsibilities; one of which is babysitting your co-EIC’s cat. I am currently writing to you with very mangled hands (but a full heart) from spending the evening with one Mr. Blue - a ten week old kitten entranced by the prospect of my fingers typing a letter from the editor. He says hello. As we approach Fall Break/Focus Week eve, I am sure you have begun to consider how you will spend this gift of extra time. For at least some of you, I imagine that this plan involves attempting to get back into the routine

you promised yourself you would stick to at the beginning of the semester. Working out three-times a week, completing all of your course work, finally finishing Atomic Habits (or your self-help poison of choice), and getting up earlier all usually make our to-do list. The aim is that these tasks will result in us being, well, better. Better students, better partners, better children - just better. While laudable to strive for self-improvement, I find that we are often prone to discounting the other ways that we are improving. Not only is this unfair to ourselves, but it deprives us

ment and frustration that there is no point to our to-do lists as we will never reach this idealized better version of ourselves. For this reason, I thought I would share one peculiar form of self-improvement I am proud of in the hopes of inspiring you to look at the small ways you have grown since the beginning of the semester. Since I was two-years old, I have had a horrendous phobia of needles. I am the person that has to take 3mg of ativan before even a simple vaccination, and still panics through the entire process while my mother (who still has to accompany me to these appointments) attempts to talk me through it. My worst nightmare is that someday I will require urgent medical care, and that my phobia will prevent me from effectively addressing the problem Therapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists alike have all recommended that I try exposure therapy. This suggestion seemed ludicrous to me. As a law student, making time for basic self-care is often a struggle, so the prospect of purposefully triggering a panic attack during my free-time by watching videos of injections is difficult to make attractive. That is until I discovered Grey’s Anatomy. I know - I am about 20 years late, but I have found that medical dramas are a very feasible way for me to work this exposure therapy into my everyday life. Previously, I could never watch medical dramas, as the gore and prospect of a needle was too much.
