Bonjour chers lecteurs du Quid ! Je suis heureuse de vous annoncer que l’assemblée générale annuelle du Quid s’est déroulée avec beaucoup de succès le 18 janvier dernier. De nombreuses discussions importantes ont eu lieu, mais l’une d’entre elles qui m’a le plus marquée concernait les efforts à faire pour s’assurer que les contributeurs se sentent les bienvenus pour soumettre des articles en français. Bien sûr, nous sommes heureux d’ac-
cepter tous les articles en français que vous nous envoyez, mais cette suggestion implique également qu’en tant que membre de l’équipe dirigeante du Quid, je vais faire un plus grand effort pour inclure mes propres contributions en français. Malheureusement pour nos lecteurs, je suis très anglophone. Bien que je parle français depuis l’âge de cinq ans et que j’aie une profonde admiration pour la langue française et la nation québécoise, ma capacité à écrire dans ma deuxième langue est loin d’être parfaite. Mais, comme

tout le monde le sait, c’est en forgeant qu’on devient forgeron (c’est une nouvelle expression française que j’essaie - l’ai-je utilisée correctement ?). Que le français soit votre première, deuxième, troisième ou centième langue, j’aimerais affirmer que le Quid est un endroit convivial où vous pouvez soumettre vos réflexions en français concernant la vie à la Faculté. In recent months, Quebec has garnered attention and sparked controversy through its unprecedented decision to increase tuition rates in anglophone universities, a move which involves redirecting the newfound excess in funds to other institutions within the province. Premier Legault defended this contentious decision by emphasizing a linguistic perspective, arguing that international and out-of-province anglophone students coming to study in Montreal often graduate without becoming proficient in French or contributing to the local workforce.1 With the backdrop of Quebec’s pressing labour shortages, including 208,000 unfilled positions, the loss of 21,000 healthcare workers over a two-year period, and a shortage of 8,500 teachers at the beginning of the last school year, such an analysis appears to be well-supported.2 However, the public sector strikes that followed the announcement of the tuition plan revealed an entirely different explanation for Quebec’s chronic inability to retain recent university graduates - a blatant disregard for the crucial role they play in the province’s ability to sustain itself. In Quebec, most public sector workers begin contract re-negotiations with the provincial government every three to five years. with previous salary agreements ill-equipped to address the massive fluctuations in the state of the economy. As negotiations commenced at the end of 2023, several Quebec public sector unions united to form the “Front Commun,” a collective representing approximately 420,000 workers as a means of maximizing their collective bargaining power.3 While the specific demands vary across professions, workers are collectively striving for adequate adjustments to salaries according to inflation, improved working conditions, and resolutions to persistent issues of understaffing, among other concerns. Presently, the average salary for a Front Commun public-sector employee stands at $43,916.4 Notably, there exists a 7.4% compensation gap between public-sector workers and their counterparts in other industries in Quebec when considering employee benefit. When focusing solely on pay, this gap widens to 16.6%. Notably, 78% of Front Commun workers are women. the Association des policières et policiers provinciaux du Québec (APPQ) recently rejected a proposed 21% salary increase over five years by a nearly 60% majority.7 The pay scales speak for themselves, with university-trained Quebec nurses remaining the worst-paid in their field throughout all of Canada. Not only are they the lowest paid at both the entry and maximum levels, but Quebec’s pay scale also consists of 18 echelons compared to 9 in Ontario and six in Saskatchewan.8 At $53,000 per year, Quebec nurses starting in entry-level positions are making 40% less than Ontario nurses whose salaries begin at $74,000. In British Columbia, that number is closer to $78,000, while it is $75,000 in Alberta, and $73,000 in New Brunswick. When Quebec nurses reach the top of their pay scales, the gap narrows to 13% but remains well below the Canadian average of $96,615. Between 2019 and 2022, the number of Quebec’s registered nurses applying to positions in Ontario jumped from 224 to 435, according to data from the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO). The number of nurses with Quebec addresses registered to work in the neighbouring province increased by nearly 30%. Meanwhile, Quebec counts 82,000 nurses compared to Ontario’s nearly 200,000. The same phenomenon exists for teachers. Data obtained from the 2017-2018 school year demonstrated that Quebec teachers placed in last position among the 10 provinces and one territory reviewed.9 The pay gap begins at the start of a Quebec teacher’s career and persists even when 10 to 15 years of seniority are accumulated. One in four Quebec teachers who begins their profession leaves after five years and a growing number of experienced educators are taking early retirement, while 44% of nurses trained in Quebec leave the profession before turning 35.10 Those who consider leaving cite the fact that nurses are both overworked and underpaid as their main motivators, bolstered by the unfavourable scheduling practices, forced overtime, and stressful working conditions.
litically charged lenses, an entirely separate narrative emerges from the studies detailing the treatment of public sector workers by the Quebec government. The key to addressing Quebec’s persistent labour shortage does not lie in xenophobia or restricting access to affordable education. Instead, it involves adequately addressing the pleas and demands articulated by those at the negotiation table which provide a clear outline of the necessary conditions for long-term survival in their roles and the recruitment and retention of new graduates. Until Premier Legault’s government acknowledges the harsh reality faced by public sector workers, characterized by elevated rates of burnout, understaffing, inadequate funding, and salary adjustments that contribute to continued impoverishment amid the ongoing cost of living crisis, the province will continue to hemorrhage public sector workers like a gaping wound.

your shot(s) of espresso and combine it with cocoa powder. Then, steam your milk, pour, and top with more cocoa powder. Sometimes, more is more. Why a cappuccino? I think the lower milk : espresso ratio provides a more robust espresso flavour, and the microfoam keeps the chocolate power from coalescing with the milk and forming chocolate milk—rather, you get the rich tastes of cocoa and espresso, sweetened naturally by steamed milk.3
I will not presume that my suggestion of pairing coffee and chocolate will break the internet. A quick search online reveals the well-documented similarities between coffee and chocolate.1 While both coffee and chocolate are two of my favourite flavours, I never have been fond of a mocha. I find a mocha too sweet, and the chocolate so overpowering I feel as though I’m drinking a hot chocolate. It wasn’t until I moved to Melbourne, Australia during my gap year that I learned there was a better way: cocoa power in and on a cappuccino.2
Now, I don’t mean to get in between you and your barista. If you’re curious to try this, you can easily ask for a cappuccino with a bit a cocoa powder on top. If your café does hot chocolates, this should be no issue. And please, let me know how it goes! In theory, I think a macchiato (a shot of espresso with a ‘dollop’ of foam) should work as well, but I have not tried it. Milkier coffees like flat whites, lattes, cortados, the ‘Melbourne Magic’, etc. would likely struggle to remain distinct in taste from a mocha as the cocoa powder will combine with liquid when there is no foam separating barrier. 3

• The use of the term “spring break” in this province ought to be banned outright for misleading the public. There is in fact nothing spring-y about the month of March in these parts—it will be just as cold as February, and you kid yourself if you believe otherwise. • Along the same lines, skiing during spring break is a foolish endeavour. I recall once considering it a phenomenal idea to spend time at Mont-Tremblant in early March. As I arrived atop the mountain, taking in the giant neon sign stating that the temperature was approximately -40 degrees at the summit, I made a note to promptly call my notary and begin drafting my will.
Much to my chagrin, Montreal is a city where weather will always be a topic of discussion. Try as I may to steer the conversation towards more compelling topics, any interaction as of late ends in a monologue on rain, sleet, hail, high winds and plane tickets out of here. For some of you, this may be your first winter in Montreal. If this is the case, allow me to extend, on behalf of the entire city, our deepest condolences. I’ve taken enough trips around the sun on this island to know that a Montreal winter destroys something inside of all of its victims, some sort of grain of optimism that has no place in this city. As far as you may run away from here eventually, you are
unlikely to truly shed the apathy you will acquire by the end of this month. East coast winters are notoriously cruel. For those of you from British-Columbia, please know I feared for your lives as I watched the temperature dip at the beginning of this year. Now that we’ve hit minus eights and people begin to throw around the words “windchill” and “freezing rain”, a dormant well of wisdom in my brain is reactivated. To any newcomers who fear the meteorological fate that awaits them, I have here compiled for you a list of useful tidbits to prepare you for what is to come. Please, feel free to discuss these at length when you inevitably speak of how painful the walk to school has gotten:
• Congratulations! Whatever coat you have begun to wear now that the temperature is abominably low is your daily outfit until April. Montreal residents in winter are like cartoon characters – every day we have the same routine, and for ease of illustration, we adopt a permanent character design. On the bright side, we are easily recognized by our peers in snowstorms and other horrifying weather phenomena. • There are some days in Montreal when weather factors combine strategically in order to be at once hot and cold. The effect is the creation of shield of ice that will cover every car, street, doorknob, and outdoor staircase. It would be in vain to attempt to scrape this ice away in order to make your way to work or school. True locals know that these days are best given up on altogether. Return to bed and try again tomorrow.

Depuis que j'ai déménagé à Montréal, chaque fois que j'ai l'occasion d'offrir des cadeaux à des amis ou à des membres de ma famille, je considère immédiatement les options faites à Montréal ou au Québec. Je trouve que je peux souvent trouver quelque chose que le destinataire aimera tout en ayant l'avantage supplémentaire de se sentir personnalisé, même si le cadeau lui-même est quelque chose que l'on peut trouver dans n'importe quel centre commercial. Montréal abrite de nombreuses entreprises spécialisées qui répondent à presque tous les besoins. Cependant, cela représente un défi lorsque vous ne savez pas exactement ce que vous cherchez, et vous tourner vers un grand magasin ou le magasinage en ligne peut sembler être la seule façon de naviguer toutes vos options efficacement.

Heureusement, une entreprise montréalaise a remarqué cet obstacle au magasinage local et a pris des mesures pour réunir sous un même toit le meilleur de la scène du magasinage local à Montréal. Voici Signé Local ! Selon ses propres mots, Signé Local est "un acteur majeur dans la promotion et la valorisation des produits locaux de qualité au Québec " avec la mission de "faire découvrir au grand public l'excellence et la diversité des créations québécoises, tout en soutenant une consommation éthique et durable.” Heureusement pour nous, il y a un magasin Signé Local à l'intérieur du Centre Eaton, au niveau du métro. Mon expérience de magasinage ce week-end a été excellente et j'ai pu trouver des cartes de souhaits françaises uniques à envoyer à ma famille. J'espère que vous envisagerez de l'explorer !
