From the Clubhouse What a great weekend was had at the club over the Australia Day long weekend. Australia Day itself was huge with our best ever music event happening with two bands Wilbur Wilde and the Troublemakers and Us and Someone else playing for five hours. The practice green was taken over as the dance floor by many people who also respected what it was by dancing bare foot. With over two hundred people attending the music event and a further 230 people playing golf the whole day went off without a hitch. I would like to thank all our wonderful volunteers who helped with the setup and packup of the event. It took somewhere in the vicinity of 70 man hours to achieve this. Without you people events like this would be impossible to hold and your efforts are very much appreciated.
On another matter, I have had security from the ADF contact me with a concern that a lot of golfers are not obeying the road sign and speed limits on the causeway. Just last week there was almost a collision at the exit from our drive at check point two. This is a stop intersection with give way to vehicles exiting the Defence facility. Happy Golfing! Rob
Australia Day 2024 @ QGC
The Course Report..... We have been having some lovely weather of mid to high 20’s. With this weather we have had wind which has caused the course to dry out quite quickly. Our sand profile lacks the ability to hold onto moisture allowing the course to dry out without the extent of high temperature weather. On the other hand in winter we don’t have to deal with puddles or worry about heavy rain damage. This week we have been dealing with some disease. You may have seen the yellow rings in a handful of greens. We have taken action, so now all that’s left is the disease to run its course. We have top dressed all our greens this week. Doing this practice is great for the health of the turf and helps with the soil. This improves firmness of greens, smoothness, improves recovery from disease and disease scaring by promoting new growth. Hope everyone is making the most of the nice weather out on our course! Jake

The Monday Volunteers This week our team removed most of the CapeWeed from the approach to the 5th green and around the green. The CapeWeed is difficult to control with herbicides therefore hand weeding was required. The second photo shows the group doing what we do best. Drinking coffee and eating cake.

Men’s Pennant 2024 Queenscliff has again entered two teams in the SWGA Men’s Pennant being a scratch handicap team in Division Four and a Handicap team. Pennant is a great opportunity to represent the club and play some different golf courses in the district and runs from mid March to early May. We are seeking expressions of interest from single figure handicap golfers to play in Division Four and players with any handicap to play in the handicap side. The first pennant practice/get together on Sunday 11 Feb with first tee off at 1023. Need to have all players there by 10.00am. Nine holes of golf followed by a bbq. If you are interested please let Richard ‘Dick’ Lewis know by giving him a call on 0417 853 219 or let him know when you see him at the club.

The Club Bell a bit of history..... The club bell. The bell was presented to the club by local legend and club stalwart Freddie Bourke. Stories of Freddie’s gamesmanship when the match for a round of drinks was very close are still spoken of by the members that played with Fred. The rattling of coins in his pocket as his opponents were putting, putting his ball over to his teammates ball so he was able to give his teammate a line for their putt were a couple of his go to ploys. The bell was used to announce that the Captain was about to start the presentation of prizes for the day’s competition. The bell is now rung by a player who has had a hole in one so everyone in the clubhouse at the time receives a free drink.
