Welcome Retreat
Very early one sunny morning in January a convoy of cars could be seen travelling up the M23 on their way to a Crawley hotel. The travellers were geared up for another exciting retreat weekend knowing there would be lots of hard work to get through, hopefully interspersed with some fun stuff. 2
For the third year running Coastline Harmony were delighted to welcome back Lorraine Rochefort from across the pond for some serious coaching. This of course included choreography. Unfortunately, for one member, our President, this was a problem as she was still recovering from a broken hip and having to manage on crutches. Nevertheless she was placed comfortably on a chair on the front row while we tripped the light fantastic around her. After eight hours rehearsal on the Saturday we were all very ready for a rest and dinner, not least our energetic and hard working Director, Becky. Some fun and games were on the menu too and Lorraine always has some interesting stories to tell from her travels. Later some of us
managed to wander into the bar area before retiring and carry on singing, albeit in gentle tones to save our vocal cords for the Sunday morning session. It was so good to have Lorraine back with us again, and as an added bonus she informed us she is planning to come to Birmingham for Convention and will be catching up with us again. Coastline Harmony

Edinburgh Fringe Festival
The Aberdeen Chorus of Sweet Adelines performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival at St Andrew’s and St George’s Church on Saturday 18th August at 4.30 p.m. and again on Saturday 25th August at 4.30p.m. The show Aberdeen A Cappella – Buchan Radio Roadshow was a lively presentation spanning many musical styles including songs from the shows, popular
music, gospel and Scottish music with of course the usual Aberdeen humour. Under their Director Gwen Topp the 90 strong chorus travelled by bus, car and train to Edinburgh taking with them several friends and family members. The shows were very well received with large audiences at both performances resulting in a healthy profit. The chorus also promoted their CD Tartan and Tinsel – a compilation of Scottish and Christmas songs. Said Jeanette Yuille, Chorus President ‘This is the first time the chorus has performed at the Fringe and the chorus members enjoyed it so much that we have arranged to go back again this year to do 2 shows. Many of our barbershop friends from other choruses came to see us – it was lovely to have such enthusiastic and friendly audiences’ If you missed the 2007 show why not come along this year on 9th or 23rd August 2008 at St George’s and St Andrew’s Church. And the Winner is... Friday, 18th January 2008 was a landmark in the history of Lace City Singers. It was the date of the first annual chorus dinner. After the date had been altered twice and the venue changed, we ended up at the Bestwood Lodge Country Hotel. All of this apart from laying tables was accomplished by Alyson Chaney, we are very proud of the fact that she won the Ann Gooch award and she is not resting on her laurels. Following an enjoyable meal the fantastic cake, made by Gill Mills, one of our newer members, was cut. This was also our first awards evening. Fortunately there were no pickets supporting the writer’s strike and, in true Oscars fashion, the names of the winners in a number of categories were revealed when sealed
envelopes were opened by various members of the management team. “What were the awards for,” I hear you ask, “Most improved singer or highest attendance at rehearsals?” These awards recognized talents unique even amongst
this bunch of exceptional women. For instance, who but my sister Jean Bentley would take to the stage at Birmingham Symphony Hall and sing for evaluation wearing the wrong chorus trousers. For this she received the Wallace and Gromit “Wrong Trousers” Award. Kate Waller, tenor section, won the Marks and Spencer Endurance Award for her bag-packing efforts in aid of the Calgary Fund. The first to be announced, however, was the Shrinking Violet Award, which went to Judith Hodge, who gave the most
gushing acceptance speech and Oscarclass performance of the entire evening. You will have to ask a Lace City singer to explain why Joan Flinton won the Johnny Morris Award for animal impersonations. More obvious were the BABS Liaison Awards presented to Emma Beeden and Emily Atherton. Mel Cook was given the Moulinex Award for Services to Blending (she organizes our blending rehearsals) while the Catchphrase of the Year Award went to Bev Fearnly (we LOVE her). Among other winners were Becky King and Sarah Livestro who were recipients of the Increased Membership Awards for producing beautiful daughters Charlotte and Hannah respectively. The Wo-man Booker Prize for Services To Literature was awarded to Deborah Wheeldon who writes scripts for our shows. Last but not least, Maureen Walker, our management team leader, received the Pork Farm Award for having a finger in every pie. The only sad aspect of the evening was that we shall have to wait a whole year for the next one. Sheila Amer, Lace City Singers
DaleDiva Hello Region 31, Ally Law here, proud member of Phoenix and now also proud Director of the newly formed DaleDiva, a prospective Chorus from Cromford on the edge of the Derbyshire Dales. Following a re-location to Derbyshire, I decided to have a go at chasing one of my aspirations, to direct my own Chorus. I organised an open evening and publicised it where ever I could. My advertising campaign was quite simple. Wanted, women who sing! On November the 15th 2007 the first open night took place and to my complete and utter amazement 83 ladies turned up! That evening, with the help of some of my barbershop friends (thank you), we introduced our style of singing, explained my vision for a chorus and gave them the opportunity to experience 4-part harmony for themselves. It was simply a huge success and I certainly didn’t sleep that night! Fifteen weeks later, DaleDiva now has 52 auditioned members, new friendships have been formed, we have 4
6 songs in our repertoire, a Board, a music team and chorus polo shirts on the way. We have already had a vocal coaching session with Nicky Salt and, most importantly, a love of barbershop
is developing. Their eagerness to learn never ceases to amaze me and the buzz they get when they hear chords ringing is wonderful to see. Twenty three of us recently attended the Lace City ‘Starstruck’ show in Nottingham. We loved it and it was great to hear all the comments and observations that were made by our barbershop newbies. At the afterglow, we got to sing two songs with members
of Lace City Singers; the experience was described by one Dale Diva as ‘frightening but exhilarating’. I hope that some us will be able to come and watch the chorus competition in May, as I really want this new chorus to experience the wonderful and unique ‘barbershop world’ that I keep going on about. At the moment I still sing with Phoenix and am very excited at hitting the International stage with my dear friends in Hawaii in November. Their support for my new venture has been invaluable. Even when I leave them at the end of the year, I know that I will always be involved with Phoenix in some way or other over many years to come; you are just all so special to me. Vivacity’s first Sing Out excited, albeit slightly terrified, because we had been waiting so long for this night to come and it was finally here. We walked in to the church and saw all the other performers gathered together and our Lesley was waiting. After giving each other a hug, we got down to business. Costume, make up, final touches to hair, it was all going on and once we were ready we all looked and felt great. We couldn’t wait to get on to the stage. Soon On 23rd November 2007 four girls were getting changed in to costume in a cold room at a local church. It was vivacity! A new Sweet Adelines quartet and it was their very first sing out. We were very excited beforehand, we had only been together for a few months and here we were, ready to unleash ourselves to the world, (well to a few locals anyway). Our Bass Lesley had been on holiday so a last minute rehearsal at Sara’s was very much needed and we were able to put the finishing touches to our package. The rehearsal was soon over, and we knew that the next time we saw each other would be it! We would be singing on stage in front of actual people. On the Friday night I picked Sara and Steph up and we headed for the Singout, Lesley was meeting us there. Three giggling girls, buzzing with excitement and warming up in the car. We were so
the time came, and there we were; stood in the wings ready to take our place on the stage. I had to go first of course which isn’t always easy, but I knew I had three fantastic girls following me which made me feel a little more confident. “VIVACITY!” The MD shouted our name and we walked on to the stage. The lights were on and now there was no turning back. The pitch was blown and our first notes were sung. We were off. Each song seemed to last only a few
seconds and no sooner had we started, it was our last chord. It rang out around the room and the adrenaline rush that I felt at that moment was immense. We had done it! We walked off the stage with our heads held high, knowing we had done ourselves, and our chorus Riverside Harmony, proud. We were also asked to sing again on the second night and this time was even better. The nerves were no longer as intense and we enjoyed it even more, if that was even possible. Since those two sing outs, we have gone from strength to strength. Currently we are learning our competition package and we are looking forward to singing on the stage at Birmingham‘s Symphony Hall in May. It is great to be doing something I really enjoy and having three great friends to share it with makes it even better. Kim (Tenor in Vivacity!)
the London City Singers The London City Singers are a new chorus that started in London towards the end of 2007 as a result of a ‘learn to sing’ course run by a small group of barbershop singers. We applied for Prospective status recently and hope to grow steadily in number during the year with an aim to charter in 2009. We currently consist of a dozen women who work in the city and meet in the St Paul’s area on Tuesdays to rehearse from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. Most city workers commute, so the rehearsal hours have been chosen to allow the chorus members to come straight from work and then head home again at a reasonable hour. So far we have gathered a great group of talented and
enthusiastic women, some of whom bring experience of singing in a Sweet Adeline chorus from before they moved to London. Our challenge is to spread the word that we exist and introduce the women of London to the fun of singing barbershop. We will be holding “Open Nights” throughout the year and ask that if you know any women working in London who might like to sing with us, to please direct them to our website: www.LondonCitySingers. org. FLaunt News We are just coming down to earth after our fabulous Calgary experience. As more photos are sent to us, the memories come flooding back again, and we wanted to share this one with you, that was sent to us, taken by someone in the auditorium immediately before our performance...
was truly amazing! When we came on stage, we really “felt the love” and be assured - these girls (along with some help from Lace City) made as much noise as the rest of the 9,993 other people in the auditorium! How wonderful it is to have friends. As if we hadn’t had a busy enough year, right up ‘till Christmas it was still “all go” for us! During December, we sang… in Ashwell for the British Legion…in Norwich for Norwich Harmony’s Christmas Show… in Silsoe at Renault Trucks Christmas Party…and finally, just 5 days before Christmas, in Reading for the Barberette’s farewell dinner to director Kay (Kim’s mum)…whew!!!!!!!!!! Over Christmas, we took a well earned rest. Kim as usual went somewhere warm and sunny, this time Spain with hubby The support we had from the region Chris and then Egypt with daughter Holly was wonderful, and the “live” support –aaaahhh…Jenn went to visit her man in

all the way to Waikiki! The excitement is building and it’s only February! Phoenix have hit the ground running since coming back from summer break. We started a 10 week singing programme in Sept and had the best response ever with 20 women completing the course. All were brand new to barbershop and gave very positive feedback on the course content and approach. From that we now have 11 new and enthusiastic members
coming to Hawaii with us! We had some very exciting news in December – Howard Goodall became our Patron! Famous for his TV theme tunes and appearances, Howard is also National Ambassador for Music and first met Phoenix during a Sainsbury’s Choir of the Year competition several years ago. We are very privileged to be associated with Howard and aim to make him proud. We ended the year with a Cowgirl Christmas Party (to celebrate Flaunt! getting to Calgary), and an evening of mulled wine and carol singing around Potton. Both occasions gave us a chance to chill out and remind ourselves why a lot of us signed up for this hobby in the first place – the fun, friendships and, of course, the
chance to serenade unsuspecting diners in Indian restaurants!! Since then the momentum has really started growing. We had songs to learn as homework over the Christmas break and got straight down to work on them as soon as we came back. We had several applications from “hitchhikers” as we like to call them – members of other choruses who wanted to join us in Hawaii. We are delighted to have taken on board 7 of those lovely people who are already fitting in very well with our tough programme of rehearsals. We look forward to getting to know them better as the year goes on. We had a great weekend with Doug Harrington at the beginning of Feb, as well as an evening of coaching under glass that we invited local choruses to. As usual, Doug’s coaching has fired us up and given us a real taste of the excitement to come in Hawaii!
By the time you read this we’ll have sung on a sell-out show in Biggleswade, also featuring our friends Shannon Express, Evolution and Flaunt! We had some good press coverage for this, including two radio appearances last week. Ten brave (or is it “mad”?)
souls dragged themselves out of bed on a cold foggy morning to sing live on the Breakfast Show of BBC Radio Cambridgeshire at 8am and then repeated the exercise on the Thursday afternoon for BBC Three Counties. Both got very good responses and were great fun to do. It doesn’t stop there obviously! We have fundraising going on in the background all the time and will be bringing our wonderful Totaliser with us to Birmingham. We have a very full programme of rehearsals planned for the next few months and more coaching with Doug. We are also waiting, with everything crossed, for confirmation that Dale Syverson can fit us into her very busy schedule in July – can’t wait for that! We’re really looking forward to seeing you all again in May – please come and say hello and support our Hawaii fund in any way you can. We’ve got a lot of surfboards to buy! Coastline Congratulations…. To our young dynamic Director, Becky Thorpe, who was married to Ian Middleton in Vancouver on Sunday 10th February 2008. The wedding service took place in the ultra modern Chapel at Stanley Park, and was followed by a reception at the unique Steamworks Brewer y, Gastown. Becky’s Maid of Honour was Valerie Taylor. Both Becky and Valerie are members of our Regional Faculty and also members of Twist! Quartet, and proud mum Jackie Mumford, is a past Regional Finance Co-ordinator. Becky and Ian both share a love and this was where Ian romantically of skiing, especially in Vancouver, proposed to Becky at the top of the

Observatory Tower in Vancouver at sunset on the 10th February 2006 (Exactly 2 years to the date before the wedding). Before their wedding they enjoyed a week skiing in the mountains, fortunately not breaking any bones, and afterwards honeymooned on a cruise in the Caribbean. On their return home in March an evening reception took place at The Hilton Hotel, Fareham, and among the guests were members of Coastline who performed a surprise song to the happy couple. Coastline would like to wish Becky and Ian all happiness in their future life together.

How To Give A PVI A new series of tips to help get the most out of our singers.
Our first contributor is Alyson Chaney, Approved International Faculty, current Region 31 Education Coordinator and Certified Director. For the past two years, Alyson has taught at IES as well as giving classes at regional events and workshops. The first article outlines how to give a PVI (Personal Vocal Improvement session which is usually given as a one-to-one). Be aware that a PVI can be a daunting experience all round. The singer will be initially very nervous and will need a lot of positive encouragement and support. Praise her for being there in the first place! Put the singer at ease before asking her to sing. Keep the vocal exercises you use as simple as possible. Use both your eyes and your ears to evaluate. Keep your body language positive. Ask for permission to touch the singer if you need to use that as a teaching tool. Give the singer no more than two or three areas to work on. Provide the singer with exercises if appropriate which will help her improve her areas of need (homework). Provide closure to the PVI with a summary of the points covered and suggestions for improvement. Over the past few years, I have been very fortunate to have been given the
opportunity to work with singers from all over the world at IES and nearer to home with my own choruses. I find that a collection of simple vocal exercises will give plenty of opportunities to work with and develop the singer’s voice. Initially I join in with the singer to give her confidence. I use the 12345 notation to write down the “notes”! Some gentle humming to start with is a good lead-in to the PVI. Try a vocalise like 1354321 and then up or down by a semitone. Start on an A below middle C. 5432171234321 then up or down by a semitone. Start on an “ah” or “oo” vowel. 534231271 and then up or down by a semitone. Start on any pure vowel :
dealing with singers remember the key areas of: Alignment - Check the six points line up: Ear – shoulder – lumber – hip – knee – ankle. Remember that if one of these points moves out of line it will be more difficult to sing well. Space - Remind the singer that she can only sing with warm air space if she breathes into that space. Support - Ask the singer to give attention to: keeping the ribcage in a comfortably elevated position, letting the air in low, controlling the release of the air and giving attention to the abdominal area when supporting a phrase Air - The consistency of the flow of air – bubble air flow. Lift - Maintaining lift in the space in the mouth at all times especially on the ah, eh and ih vowels. One of the main aims of the PVI should be to increase confidence in the singer whilst providing her with useful exercises to help her to improve. It should be a rewarding experience for both PVI giver and receiver! I have trained chorus music teams in giving a PVI and I would be happy to do this for your chorus too. If you would like me to do this, or if you have any queries, “ah”, “ee”, “eh”, “oo” or open “oh” (no please get in touch. Flying High Barbershop Chorus “Flying High Singers” from the Netherlands will bid an official farewell to their director Kit the Bolster, who will leave the chorus after more than 17 years. The search for a new director will start from January.
