CONVENTION 2005 – one to remember! When we heard this time last year that the Rich-Tone Chorus was coming across to Region 31 and wanted to attend our Convention in Plymouth we could hardly contain our joy. We have had International Champion Quartets over here in the past but this was to be the first time that an International Champion Chorus would be visiting us, along with their Master Director, the legendary, Dale Syverson. We were certainly in for a treat! A week after Convention and I’m still buzzing with the impact Dale and the Rich-Tone Chorus have had on the Region. I was one of the lucky Lace City Singers who got to stand on the risers with those amazing women (did the risers suddenly expand to hold 150 singers, or was it all just so magical…?) and I must admit it was the most fantastic experience of my barbershop life! We can’t thank them enough for sharing their love of barbershop, their friendship and their expertise with us. We loved having them over here and our Region has made so many new Texan friends! Come back soon!
My warmest congratulations go to all our award winners and medallists this year. Particular congratulations go to our worthy first place medallists Eu4ia UK and Surrey Harmony. We know that you will be fantastic representatives for our Region over in the USA. What you said…. Thank you to all who took the trouble to fill in evaluation forms. Here in a nutshell are the very valuable comments you made. We will certainly take them all on board, although some, like the weather (what happened to the sunny south west?) are out of our control…… The main points gained from the Education sessions: • Dale’s explanation of creating space and resonance • listening to the Rich-Tone's sound • learning a useful new tag (Berkeley Square) • keeping your face lifted even for a sad ballad • the ribbon technique to get a smooth sound • how singing with locked knees tightens your sound

The best things about Convention were: • Rich-Tone Chorus and Dale Syverson – brilliant (this comment was on everyone’s evaluation sheet!!) • the auditorium – compact and produced a good sound • shorter traffic pattern • fantastic experience on stage • the opportunity to see the very best and find things to aspire to • afterglow and singing with other choruses • seeing other choruses perform and especially witness their choreography • fabulous show! • good venue • organisation of the event generally • meeting others and sharing • the camaraderie • help given in the education classes • being able to talk with likeminded people • the excitement of competition • seeing how the standards improve year on year • nice town, venue and atmosphere • break from the kids!

Suggestions for improvement included: • roving mic during Q and A session so that we can hear the questions better • ensuring that choruses stay in their allotted seats for all events • some kind of temporary cover to shelter choruses in the event of rain • have a mass sing next year • have larger warm up rooms - this really affected the larger choruses • could we have more bar staff at the afterglow? Ordering drinks took a lifetime! • stick to the programme and don’t make last minute changes. I missed Dale’s education class and was gutted!! • an education session highlighting choreography • keeping the MDs and Presidents on stage for the results. This makes the whole process of giving out the medals more slick • chorus and quartet tabulation sheets should have been available to all • longer coffee break on Sunday morning • have more American choruses over in the future, hopefully of the calibre of the Rich Tones • chance to buy teach tapes, sheet music, education information and top American chorus/ quartet CD’s at Harmony Bazaar We do take your comments seriously and we will consider all constructive comments at our next RMT meeting.
We were grateful to all of you who took the time to thank the RMT for the organisation of the weekend. It was a great pleasure, and thanks for that! What the judges said…… Our four judges this year were extremely complimentary once again about the improvements in our Region, so well done to everyone for their great performances. They mentioned that all Region 31 choruses were a credit to our organisation. Here are some of the pointers they made in the post-competition meeting to help continue the upward trend for next year: • more resonance will help all categories • more focussed bass sound needed particularly in choruses • basses need to be as strong as the leads in choruses. A tip for rehearsals is to tune the basses and leads together and have lots of duetting • dome individual voices are sticking out in choruses. Section unity is essential. • choice of music for choruses is generally good but quartets are still choosing music which is too difficult. Try to choose music which has a smoother melody line. If there are big jumps in the melody line this could be a problem. • more forward motion needed. Sing the song from the overall perspective rather than delivering a phrase at a time • vocal energy needed especially in ballads. Sing on a stream of air and make sure all singers have the correct posture. • the judges appreciated the musicality of Region 31 – there Page 2

was very little strident or shrill singing. breath support, stamina and smooth connection of flowing phrases is always an issue and something we all work hard to achieve! quartets need to work on tuning and harmony accuracy. over articulation of consonants (quartets, particularly) should be avoided choruses need to work on synchronisation incorporate the energy of the uptune into the ballad make-up – quartets need to apply more. Choruses were better. Directors did not over-direct or take the attention away from their choruses.
Thanks once again to our judges who were a pleasure to work with. We particularly wish our new International President–elect Pat Levezu all the very best as she takes over the reins from Diane Huber in 2006. Thanks to you all for making this Convention so special. It’s Surrey Harmony’s 5th gold medal, and it means different things to different people. Take our bass, Margaret Fordyce, who had to travel around 12,000 miles to win her first gold medal. “I’ve been a Sweet Adeline for more than 11 years, and my chorus in New Zealand has had a number of second and third places, but has never won their Regional. I am just thrilled to have won with Surrey Harmony, and am so excited about the prospect of competing in Las Vegas.”
Red is the colour of gold A recently published scientific survey claims that wearing red gives participants in competition the winning edge. According to the boffins, red puts the opponents on the back foot. I doubt those behind the survey tried out their theory on Sweet Adelines, but the Surrey Harmony “ladies in red” are just thrilled to be wearing gold once again! Is it me or is our Region 31 Convention just getting more exciting every year? Whatever the debate over the marks, it seems the Region just keeps on raising the game and this year was no exception.
Some people have to wait a long time for gold. But for others it comes in just a matter of months. In total Surrey Harmony had five new members singing at Convention. One of them was tenor, Alison Walker. She only joined Surrey Harmony in January and can’t believe that four months later she’s wearing a gold medal. “I worked extremely hard to pass my contest songs”, says Alison. “I was singing on every car journey, when doing the housework and even wore headphones in bed! I was over the moon when I was told I could compete. I was very nervous, but had lots of help with my hair, my make-up and my nails. All I really had to worry about was remembering the words and the choreography.” Among our many souvenir photos from Plymouth, we have one of our Director, Jenny Lawson, crying. It was from the moment she realised that Dale Syverson was conducting the RichTone Chorus in “Quartet of Nations” which Jenny composed. “I was sitting there wondering why I recognised the chords, when it dawned on me,” says Jenny. “But it was even more wonderful when I conducted it with Surrey Harmony behind me and the rest of Region 31 in front of me. That was truly a moment to cherish, alongside the one when I realised we had won.” Page 3
Surrey Harmony was also very proud of our three competing quartets ZigZag, Vice Versa and Hunky-Dory. Our gold medal celebrations were tinged with sadness however to learn that “Hunky-Dory” bass Inger Pilgaard - a former RMT member – has decided to return to her native Denmark. We shall miss her great voice, her wonderful smiley Adeline face and most of all her great sense of fun. We wish her well for the future. So now “Sin City” beckons for Surrey Harmony. Region 31 Convention, Plymouth 2005 – and how was it for you? Well, as far as Lace City singers were concerned, it was MAGICAL! The weather was cold, the rain poured and the wind howled – but who cared – we were going to sing with Dale Syverson and the Rich-Tone Chorus! Beside the fact that we were all very involved with all aspects of Convention, such as organisation, escorting, Harmony Bazaar, singing for evaluation, mic testing and performing our World War 2 show package, the icing on the cake was the prospect of joining the Rich-Tone Chorus on stage at the end of the concert. It all started on Saturday morning, when our friends from ‘across the pond’ started to stream into our rehearsal. It seemed as if they would never stop coming through the door! They watched our contest package and gave us a hugely enthusiastic response. We then practised the two songs we had learnt to sing with them, all of us mingling in amongst them, finding people who sing the same part. They were so friendly and warm – it was a lovely experience. Then they sang ‘A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square’ to us. It blew our socks off! I don’t think any of us had heard anything like it in our lives! Saturday night was really enjoyable and we had so much fun performing our ‘show package’ – but absolutely nothing will ever compare with the thrill of being invited onto the stage to
sing ‘Anthem’ and ‘We are Family’ with the Rich-Tone Chorus. We scrambled on to the risers with our hearts beating like mad and all found places amongst our new friends. Singing with them was absolutely wonderful – having their sound all around us was something I cannot describe. It was fantastic for us as well to have ‘our Glenn’ out there in front of us all, directing ‘Anthem’. He still had the smile on his face, four days later!

After the speeches, I was joined by the chorus members to sing this to him –he was so surprised and moved. Even the stunning chocolate cake was made by a chorus member, Mary. Maddie gets Married! We had cause to celebrate recently, when one of our Chorus members announced she was getting married, and wanted as many chorus members as possible to join her on her special day. This is what she had to say:

"There was some beautiful singing on my wedding day, which came from members of my barbershop chorus, ‘The Mayflowers’. My chorus are like a family to me and it was wonderful to see them there, and hear them sing, ‘Can you feel the love "Today".’ Singing has always enriched my life and will continue to do so after my marriage because Michael, my husband, enjoys and supports the Chorus. I had earlier written a poem, which Page 4

Eu4ia.... to New Orleans Eu4ia are obviously over the moon to be going to New Orleans this year. We had a great weekend and we thought we’d give you an insight into our emotional ups and downs of competing…. Last year was a bit disrupted for us rehearsal wise – with Kate having a baby – then four weeks ago Nancy had vocal strain. She has been going to a speech therapist for four weeks who said ‘I think I can sort it out, but I’d like a bit longer really’. No pressure there then! Nancy stopped singing and two weeks before convention we were rehearsing as a three (with Nancy being annoying by watching and making comments…). We finally managed to rehearse the weekend before Oh dear.... convention – but still Croak! couldn’t do a full rehearsal and Nancy returned to the speech therapist as a bit of ‘croak’ had returned. On the day of the competition we were incredibly tense and nervous. In every run through of the song, someone forgot something and swore or cried. In the end we decided we’d just try and give it our all on stage. The results were incredibly nail biting. When they announced we’d won, we felt very emotional. As you can see, after the disappointment of Indianapolis we feel so excited and lucky to get the chance to go to New Orleans this year. We had a wonderful convention weekend (after the trauma of competing that is!) Thank you to all those people that gave us such nice

comments and came to say hello. Thank you especially to Glenn Chaney for allowing us to sing with Lace City and the Rich-Tone Chorus – what a moment that was! And the RichTone Chorus….what a sound. It was jaw droppingly good and a privilege to hear them – what an amazing weekend we had.
Wouldn't it be great if we could see a student from the UK or Ireland receive a grant or scholarship to help them on their way to a musical career? It could be either a girl or boy but they would have to include vocal studies in their course. If you know of anyone, then please let them know about the Young Singers' Foundation. Yours in harmony

Finally, we’d like to announce that Sandra is going to get married to Tony Riley the weekend before we go to New Orleans – and so their honeymoon will be competing at International!
First of all, congratulations to everyone who competed in Plymouth. It was a fantastic contest and no-one let themselves down. Both competitions and the Show of Champions were very entertaining. Sunday morning was fantastic. Can't wait to get the DVD! Distance no object for Irene Aberdeen Chorus attracts members from all over Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, but we were delighted to compete in Plymouth with one of our members from Belgium! Irene Guest used to live in Oldmeldrum near Aberdeen and when her husband was moved to Belgium with his job in the oil business, Irene was desperate to continue singing with the chorus. She kept up to date with tapes and came to the chorus as often as she could, combining her visits with seeing her son in Aberdeen and her Mum in Birmingham. Irene recently brought her daughter Natalie along to the chorus when she was home on holiday from New Zealand. Now Natalie has joined the Wellington Chorus and, like her Mum, has also won a medal at regional contest there. UK REGION 31 Hello from the Rich-Tone Chorus! My name is Caroline Rocco, and on behalf of the Rich-Tone Chorus I would like to thank you all for the wonderful welcome and incredible hospitality we enjoyed at your recent Regional Contest in Plymouth. We had a fantastic time during our visit with the “Quartet of Nations”. There were many highlights during the weekend, but perhaps the most poignant for me personally was the privilege of singing your region’s theme song on stage - it certainly emphasized the sisterhood shared by all Sweet Adelines worldwide. I also highly enjoyed interacting one-on-one with many of your region’s members. I was one of several individuals carrying RichTone CDs. One comment that both I and others heard, was that folks were glad we had brought the CDs with us, because they have had a difficult time obtaining them. Those of your members who would like to purchase our CDs or tapes can find details of a special offer on our website at www.richtones.org. Scotland’s Leading Quartet to Sing at Edinburgh Festival Fringe Vocal Zone from the Aberdeen Chorus will be performing in their own show ‘Bags of Harmony’ at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe on Saturday 13th August 2005 at 16.30 at St Andrew’s and St George’s Church on George Street. THANK YOU PURBROOK HARMONY I just wanted to say a huge THANK YOU to my wonderful chorus Purbrook Harmony for allowing me to compete with them in Plymouth. I haven’t lived locally to them since July 2000, when my husband’s job meant relocating to Lincolnshire. This move, coupled with the raising of my young family, meant I haven’t had the opportunity to sing barbershop for quite some time. I’ve obviously really missed it and soon realised there is only so long you can listen to The Tweenies and Balamory as your musical entertainment!! The girls welcomed me back with open arms even though I attended only a few rehearsals. Thank you to Mum, Rebecca and Jo for keeping me up to date on the interpretation and choreography changes and to Merle for whipping me up an outfit in record time. Thank you also to my lovely quartet Jalapeno who has spent most of the last six months singing without a lead (special thanks to Louise, our new bass, who is a total newcomer to barbershop and did a sterling job). It was very emotional to be back with the girls as they have always been so lovely to me and so supportive. A fantastic added bonus, of course, is the fact that my wonderful mum (yes I know I’m biased, sorry) Pat Bentley, is temporarily out of retirement and directing us again. The girls have all worked so hard and are incredibly proud to have achieved 2nd place in the small chorus category. The standard has become very high and I was blown away by some great performances by Page 8
both quartets and choruses, not to mention the fabulous Rich-Tone's performance. Wow! I certainly chose a good year to come back. Congratulations to all the winners and, indeed, to everybody who took part to make it such a great contest. Well done also to Inspiration and Sound Bites for having such impeccable taste in quartet dresses (think maybe we should burn the Kaleidoscope catalogue before next year girls!?!) Good luck to Lace City Singers (I have never seen a Director smile as often and as much as Glenn) and Eu4ia UK in New Orleans, you are both such fantastic representatives of our Region. Thank you girls for a truly memorable weekend. I had such a laugh! (A personal highlight being one of our girls travelling down five floors to reception dressed as Simon Cowell, having been locked out of their hotel room!). OUR “PEARL” YEAR!!
SPOTLIGHT ON DEBORAH
This is it – PURBROOK HARMONY have finally reached their 30th year. We would like to thank all who congratulated us at our recent Convention and to express our delight, amazement, thrill, wonder and great tuition received whilst we were at Plymouth. To say we enjoyed ourselves and being avid spectators of the Rich-Tone Chorus would be putting it too mildly – weren’t they great? We are now practicising everything mentioned and our front row are busy rehearsing high kicks, spinning on their posteriors and trying to maintain their sound at the same time!! Not an easy task you must agree. Our congratulations to you all for such a wonderful, competitive Convention and good luck to those participating in International. Seriously, we are truly delighted to still be able to participate as Sweet Adelines. Like many of you, we have had our moments of ups and downs but the friendship and warmth within our Chorus has always won through and we have united together to overcome and maintain our present status. We are also well aware that we have many of you to thank for your support and friendship and this we would publicly like to acknowledge. May you also be in a position to celebrate your “Pearl” Year – it is a great feeling of achievement and as you may have heard Purbrook Harmony needs no instruction on how to “Party” so you can imagine we have a great year ahead of us. My barbershop career started in October 1996, when my friends Jane and Natalie dragged me along to a Lace City Singers' rehearsal. I had been promising for months that I would go and never quite found the time, but as soon as my Open University exams were out of the way for the year, I ran out of excuses. I remember saying at the time…’I’ll come and sing but I am NOT getting involved in anything else’. I don’t quite know what happened as nine years down the line I have ended up being a Lead Section Leader, an Assistant Director, Website Designer, quartet lead and Events Coordinator. (Watch out new members – they’re going to get you!) Outside of barbershop, I work for what is now Her Majesty’s Courts Service as a ‘Business Change Initiatives Manager’ in Nottinghamshire. It’s one of those jobs that no one quite understands what it is (including me sometimes) but it basically entails working with people from all areas of the business to find and implement better ways of doing things. I have a large family, being one of six siblings, and although I don’t live with any of them, I am close to my three boisterous nephews, five even more boisterous nieces and a handful of godchildren aged between 3 and 10 years. Needless to say Christmas gets very expensive! Page 10
I graduated from the Open University in May 2004 with a BSc honours degree in Social Science. The ceremony was held at the Derby Assembly Rooms and bought back memories of my first convention held there in 1997 when I remember being blown away by the performances of our top choruses and hearing a member of the then 40 strong Lace City Singers saying ‘We’ll never be as good as that…'
Anyway, I’m enjoying being your Events Co-ordinator although it can be quite demanding at times. One of the biggest challenges is to find venues for regional workshops that are big enough to accommodate our needs yet affordable to our members – so if you have any contacts or know of any suitable venues on your doorstep, I’d like to hear from you. It's our Silver Jubilee
This year the Aberdeen Chorus of Sweet Adelines reaches its 25th Birthday and we hope you will join us in celebrating our Silver Jubilee. A Dinner and Party has been arranged in Norwood Hall, Garthdee Road, Pitfodels, Aberdeen on Friday 9th September 2005, 7pm for 7.30pm and we would be delighted if you could come and help us celebrate in style. This is open to all Adelines both past and present. Why not combine your visit with a late summer holiday, visiting a part of Scotland which is possibly new to you. We are close to Royal Deeside, the Whisky Trail, the Castles of Mar and we have beautiful scenery as well. You are promised an unforgettable evening of fun, laughter, singing and reminiscing. Forth Valley Chorus enjoyed their Plymouth weekend enormously. There were too many highlights to list and we have come back to Scotland with our minds full of wonderful memories and the sound of the Rich Tones still ringing in our ears.
