This week’s Family Game Night Review is for a game called Beat The Parents by Spin Master Games. As the name suggests, it’s a parents vs. kids game of wagers, trivia, and challenges. This game plays 2-6 players and is for children 6 and up, although our 4 year old did great with some help from his older brother. The game starts by choosing your wager. Each team writes on a whiteboard, something they are willing to do or give up if the other team wins. Some wagers we’ve used before are one week of doing dishes, pizza for dinner for two nights next week, go to the movies, walk the dog, and ice cream sundae night. Parents and kids then play on separate teams and sit on opposite sides of the gameboards. There are Challenge Cards and Question Cards that are placed face down next to the gameboard. The object of the game is to get your team’s game piece to the end of the board first to win the game and the wager! Kids take the first turn and the game begins by the parents taking a Question card and reading the kids trivia question. Each Question Card has a side for Kids questions and Parents questions. The Kids Trivia questions are very age appropriate and relatively easy, while the parents trivia questions are also age appropriate and somewhat more difficult, which is a fun element to the game. Some of the kids’ questions look like this: How many days does it take for the Earth to make one revolution around the sun? Which American author wrote the book, How the Grinch Stole Christmas? Each time the kids answer a question correctly they move their team’s game piece one space. There are three questions per card and the turn is over once they answer all three correctly or they get an answer wrong.
Then the parents start their turn with the trivia questions. The parents’ trivia questions look like this: What is Muhammad Ali’s birth name? Pho is a popular noodle soup from what country? What is the meaning of the French expression “c’est la vie?” There are also Challenge spaces on the board. When you get to the Challenge space you must stop there and you do not continue with your trivia card. You pick up a Challenge Card and read it out loud. Challenges are either head-to-head between one player from each team or all the players compete. The Challenges are the most fun part of the game. Here is an example of a challenge: All Play! Everyone fill a glass of water and begin drinking on the count of 3. The first full team to drink all the water and open their mouths wins! However, if either of the winning team members spilled on their shirt, the other team wins instead. Winning team moves 2 spaces. The last space on the gameboard is also a challenge space. To win, your team must complete one final challenge! I really appreciate this game because I feel that it promotes good sportsmanship and teamwork. When we began playing this as a family, my then 7 year old had a lot of trouble getting trivia questions wrong or got upset when his dad beat him by a landslide in a challenge. But playing this game and many others has taught him how to be a humble winner and also a graceful loser. We congratulate each other at the end of the game and while it’s not always the most fun, my son always keeps his end of the deal when he has to take out the trash for the next week.
