MaintenanceIntervalSchedule

Usetheservicehourmetertodetermineservicingintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily, weekly,monthly,etc.)canbeusedinsteadofservicehourmeterintervalsiftheyprovidemore convenientservicingschedulesandapproximatetheindicatedservicehourmeterreading. Recommendedserviceshouldalwaysbeperformedattheintervalthatoccursfirst.

Underextremelysevere,dustyorwetoperatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationthanis specifiedintheMaintenanceIntervalschartmightbenecessary.

NOTE:ThefollowinginformationandrecommendationsareforCaterpillar'sDieselEngine Antifreeze/Coolantonly.

Caterpillar'sDieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolantwasspecificallydesignedfordieselenginecooling systemsandnaturalgasenginecoolingsystems.DieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolantisanalkaline type,ethyleneglycolbasedformulacontaininginorganiccorrosioninhibitorsandanti-foam agents.DieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolantwasformulatedwiththecorrectadditivelevelsto protectmetalpartsindieselengines.DieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolantwillfurnishadequate corrosionprotection,anti-foamprotection,andcylinderliner/blockpittingprotection.Usea30 percentDieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolantand70percentacceptablewater/supplementalcoolant additivesolution.

MajoradvantagesofDieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolant:

Minimalsilicatecontent-Highsilicatecoolants,usedwithsupplementalcoolantadditives,can causeabuild-upofsolidsovertime.Build-upofsolidscancauseplugging,lossofheattransfer, andwaterpumpsealdamage.DieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolantsignificantlyreducessolidresidue build-upthatcausesinhibitordropoutandwaterpumpsealdamage.

Noneedtoaddsupplementalcoolantadditiveoninitialfill-Supplementalcoolantadditivemust beaddedwithothercommerciallyavailablecoolants.

DieselEngineAntifreeze/CoolantisavailablefromyourCaterpillardealerinthefollowing quantities:

ProperAntifreezeConcentrations

UsethetabletodetermineconcentrationsofDieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolanttomixwith acceptablewaterandsupplementalcoolantadditive.

AcceptableAntifreeze/Coolant

AnylowsilicatecoolantthatmeetsTruckMaintenanceCouncil(TMC)RecommendedPractice (RP)329,TMCRP330,orASTMD4985requirementswhenusedwithsupplementalcoolant additivesisacceptable.

Caterpillarrecommendsaminimumof30percentglycolto70percentwater/supplementalcoolant additiveforpropercorrosionprotection.AllCaterpillarengineswithair-to-airaftercooling (ATAAC)requireaminimumconcentrationof30percentglycoltopreventwaterpump cavitation.

While30percentglycolistheminimumacceptablevolume,Caterpillarprefersa50percentglycol and50percentwater/supplementalcoolantadditivemixtureforoptimumperformance.

WhenusingDieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolant,nosupplementalcoolantadditiveisnecessaryon initialfillbecausesupplementalcoolantadditiveisintheDieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolant. SupplementalcoolantadditivemustbeaddedwithcommercialcoolantsmeetingASTMD4985at initialfill.SupplementalcoolantadditivemustbereplenishedwithbothCaterpillarDieselEngine Antifreeze/Coolantandothercommercialcoolantsatregularserviceintervals.Refertothechart forquantitiesofCaterpillarLiquidSCAtomixwithASTMD4985commercialcoolantsatinitial fill.

Supplementalcoolingsystemadditivecontainsalkali.Toprevent personalinjury,donotdrink,avoidcontactwiththeskinandeyes.

ThecoolingsystemMUSTcontainsupplementalcoolantadditivefor properengineprotection,regardlessofantifreezeconcentration.

NOTICE

DONOTmixCaterpillar'ssupplementalcoolantadditiveorcoolant additiveelementswithanothermanufacturer'sproducts.Selecta coolingsystemtreatmentanduseitexclusively.

Supplementalcoolantadditiveisnecessaryforproperconventionalcoolantmaintenance.Most coolantsolutionsDONOTcontainsufficientsupplementalcoolantadditivefordieselengine application.

NOTICE

Donotexceedtherecommendedsixpercentsupplementalcoolant additiveconcentration.Excessivesupplementalcoolantadditive concentrationcanformdepositsonthehighertemperaturesurfacesof thecoolingsystem,reducingtheengine'sheattransfercharacteristics. Reducedheattransfercouldcausecrackingofthecylinderheadand otherhightemperaturecomponents.Excessivesupplementalcoolant additiveconcentrationcouldalsoresultinradiatortubeblockage, overheating,and/oracceleratedwaterpumpsealwear.Neveruseboth liquidsupplementalcoolantadditiveandthespin-onelement(if equipped)atthesametime.Theuseofthoseadditivestogethercould resultinsupplementalcoolantadditiveconcentrationexceedingthe recommendedsixpercentmaximum.

Useliquidsupplementalcoolantadditiveorasupplementalcoolantadditiveelement(ifequipped) tomaintainathreetosixpercentsupplementalcoolantadditiveconcentrationinthecoolant.

NOTE:Caterpillartestkitscheckforconcentrationofnitritesinthecoolantsolution.Some manufacturers'supplementalcoolantadditivearephosphatebased.Caterpillartestkitsprovide inaccurateresultswithphosphatebasedsupplementalcoolantadditive.Commercialsupplemental coolantadditiveproductsmustcontainsilicatesandaminimumof70gramsper3.8L(1USgal) (1200ppm)nitrites.Ifanothermanufacturer'ssupplementalcoolantadditiveisused,usethat manufacturer'stestkit.Followthemanufacturer'srecommendationsforcoolingsystemtreatment andtestevaluation.

Testthecoolantperiodicallytomonitorsupplementalcoolantadditivelevels.Usethe4C-9301 TestKittocheckforCaterpillarsupplementalcoolantadditiveconcentration.Thekitalso providescoolingsystemmaintenancerecommendations.Thiskitisspecificallydesignedforuse withCaterpillarsupplementalcoolantadditives.The8T-5296TestKitcanalsobeusedtocheck forCaterpillarsupplementalcoolantadditiveconcentration.

Thetablesliststhepartnumbersandquantitiesofsupplementalcoolantadditive(liquidandsolid) availablefromyourCaterpillardealer.Followtheinstructionsonthelabel.

Permitted-Water/SupplementalCoolantAdditive

NOTICE

Neverusewateralonewithoutsupplementalcoolantadditiveor inhibitedcoolant.Wateraloneiscorrosiveatengineoperating temperatures.

NOTICE

Amixtureofwaterandsupplementalcoolantadditivedoesnotprotect againstfreezingorboiling.

NOTICE

Acoolantmixtureofwaterandsupplementalcoolantadditivewillcool andprovidesomeprotectiontoenginecomponents,butitwillNOT providenormalengineservicelife.

NOTICE

Caterpillar'srecommendationforpropercoolantisaminimum concentrationof30percentglycoland70percentacceptablewaterand supplementalcoolantadditive(threepercentofthetotalmixture).This recommendationwillmaintaincoolingsystemcorrosionprotection.

Inapplicationswherefreezeprotectionisnotrequired,orwhereantifreezeisnotavailable,a coolantmixtureofacceptablewaterandsupplementalcoolantadditivecanbeused.A water/supplementalcoolantadditivesystemshouldmaintainasixtoeightpercentsupplemental coolantadditiveconcentration.DONOTexceedeightpercentmaximumsupplementalcoolant additiveconcentration.Supplementalcoolantadditiveconcentrationlevelsmustbemonitored.

The8T-5296TestKitcanbeusedtoevaluatethesupplementalcoolantadditiveconcentrationin water/supplementalcoolantadditivecoolant,withthefollowingmodificationstolabelinstruction Step3andStep5.

STEP3.-Addtapwatertothevialuptothe20mlmark.

STEP5.-Withthedefinedprocedures,thesixtoeightpercentconcentrationwillyielda20to27 droprange.Fewerdropsindicatealowconcentrationofsupplementalcoolantadditiveandmore dropsindicateahighconcentration.Adjusttheconcentrationappropriately.

Ifthesupplementalcoolantadditiveconcentrationisgreaterthanthemaximumofeightpercent: drainsomeofthecoolant,refillthesystemwithacceptablewater,andretesttheconcentration level.

ConventionalCoolingSystemMaintenance

Checktheantifreezesolutionfrequentlyincoldweathertoensureadequatefreezeprotection.Test theconcentrationorsubmitacoolantsampletoyourCaterpillardealerinordertomonitorthe supplementalcoolantadditiveconcentrationinyourengine'scoolantmixtureevery250service hoursormonthly,whichevercomesfirst.Supplementalcoolantadditiveoramaintenanceadditive element(ifequipped)maybeneededevery250servicehoursormonthly,whichevercomefirst.

Topreventover-inhibitingtheengine'scoolingsystem,donotuseboth supplementalcoolantadditiveliquidandasupplementalcoolant additiveelement(ifequipped)atthesametime.Useonemethod exclusively.

WhenusingCaterpillarDieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolantandsupplementalcoolantadditive,the coolingsystemshouldbedrained,cleaned,flushed,andfilledwithnewcoolantevery3000 servicehoursoreverytwoyears,whichevercomefirst.RefertothetopicMaintenanceIntervals inthismanual.

WhenNOTusingCaterpillarDieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolantandsupplementalcoolant additive,thedrain/flushproceduremustbeperformedatleasteveryyear.

Afteryoudrainandyourefillthecoolingsystem,operatetheenginewiththeradiatorfillercap removeduntilthecoolantreachesnormaloperatingtemperatureandthecoolantlevelstabilizes. Addcoolantmixtureasnecessarytofillthesystemtotheproperlevel.

CoolingSystemCleaning

Draining,cleaning,andflushingthecoolingsystemremovessmallparticles,undesirable chemicals,scale,andotherdepositformations.Notperformingmaintenanceonthecoolingsystem caneventuallycauseengineoverheatingproblemsthatcouldresultinseveredamagetoengine andcomponents.

Cleanthecoolingsystemifthesystembecomescontaminated,iftheengineoverheats,orif foamingisobserved.

Caterpillar'sFastActingCoolingSystemCleanerisdesignedtocleanthesystemofharmfulscale andcorrosion.Thecleanerdissolvesmineralscale,corrosionproducts,lightoilcontamination, andsludge.

FastActingCoolingSystemCleanerisavailablefromyourCaterpillardealerinthequantities listed.Followtheproductlabeldirectionsforproperuse.

LongLifeCoolant/AntifreezeCoolingSystemMaintenance

NOTICE

UseonlyCaterpillarproductsorcommercialproductsthathave passedCaterpillar'sEC-1specificationforpremixedorconcentrated coolants.

UseonlyCaterpillarExtenderwithLongLifeCoolant/Antifreeze.

MixingLongLifeCoolant/Antifreezewithotherproductsreducesthe LongLifeCoolant/Antifreezeservicelife.Failuretofollowthe recommendationsincludedinthissectioncanreducecoolingsystem componentlife.

Inordertomaintainthecorrectbalanceofantifreezeandadditives,careshouldbetakento maintaintheproperLongLifeCoolant/Antifreezeconcentration.Reducingtheamountof antifreezelowerstheproportionofadditive,thusloweringthecoolant'sabilitytoprotectthe coolingsystemfrompitting,cavitation,erosion,anddeposits.

ProperLongLifeCoolant/AntifreezeAdditions

NOTE:DONOTaddLongLifeCoolant/AntifreezeConcentrateasamakeupsolutionforroutine coolingsystemtop-off.AddingconcentratedLongLifeCoolant/Antifreezeincreasesthe concentrationofglycolinthecoolingsystem.

Duringnormalmaintenance,useapremixedsolutionofapprovedwaterandLongLife Coolant/Antifreezeasatop-offtothecoolingsystemtobringthecoolanttotheproperlevel.Use LongLifeCoolant/AntifreezeoracoolantthatmeetsCaterpillar'sEC-1specification.Ifacoolant thatmeetsEC-1isnotavailable,usedistilledorde-ionizedwaterasamake-up.Checktheglycol levelofthecoolingsystemwiththe1U-7298CoolantTester(°C)orthe1U-7297CoolantTester

(°F).UseLongLifeCoolant/AntifreezeConcentratetorestoretheproperglycolconcentration beforetheengineisexposedtofreezingtemperatures.

NOTICE

DonotuseconventionalcoolanttotopoffacoolingsystemusingLong LifeCoolant/Antifreeze.

Donotusesupplementalcoolantadditivesotherthanextenderin coolingsystemsfilledwithLongLifeCoolant/Antifreeze.

IfacoolingsystemusingLongLifeCoolant/Antifreezehasbeentoppedoffwithasmallamount ofconventionalcoolantorifasupplementalcoolantadditivewasaddedtothesystembymistake, thesystemwillnotbeharmed.

Shouldthecoolingsystembecomecontaminatedwithconventionalcoolantorsupplemental coolantadditiveexceeding10percentofthecoolingsystem'stotalcapacity,performoneofthe followingactions:

*DrainthecoolingsystemandrefillthecoolingsystemwithLongLifeCoolant/Antifreeze, or

*Maintainthecoolingsystemasifthecoolingsystemisfilledwithconventionalcoolant.

LongLifeCoolant/AntifreezeCoolingSystemCleaning

NOTE:NocleaningagentsaretobeusedwhenacoolingsystemusingLongLife Coolant/Antifreezeisdrained,flushed,andrefilled.

Cleanwateristheonlysystemcleaning/flushingagentrequiredwhenLongLife Coolant/Antifreezeisdrainedfromthecoolingsystem.

LongLifeCoolant/Antifreezecanberecycled.Thedrainedcoolantmixturecanbedistilledto separatetheethyleneglycolandwaterforreuse.ContactyourCaterpillardealerformore information.

Afterdrainingandrefillingthecoolingsystem,operatetheenginewiththeradiatorfillercap removeduntilthecoolantreachesnormaloperatingtemperatureandthecoolantlevelstabilizes. Addcoolantmixtureasnecessarytofillthesystemtotheproperlevel.

ConvertingaCoolingSystemfromConventionalCoolanttoLongLifeCoolant/Antifreeze

NOTE:WhenthecoolantischangedfromconventionalcoolanttoLongLifeCoolant/Antifreeze, aCaterpillarcleanershouldbeused.AftertheuseofCaterpillarcoolingsystemcleaners,the systemMUSTbethoroughlyflushedwithcleanwater.

ToconvertthecoolingsystemfromconventionalcoolanttoLongLifeCoolant/Antifreeze, performthefollowingprocedure:

1.Drainthecoolant.

2.Flushthesystemwithcleanwatertoremoveanydebris.

3.UseaCaterpillarcleanertocleanthesystem.Followtheinstructionsonthelabel.Caterpillar cleanerisavailablefromyourCaterpillardealer.

4.Drainthecleaner.Flushthecoolingsystemwithcleanwater.

5.Fillthecoolingsystemwithcleanwater.Operatetheengineuntilthecoolingsystem temperatureis49to66°C(120to150°F).

6.Drainandflushthecoolingsystemwithcleanwater.

7.RepeatStep5andStep6.

8.FillthecoolingsystemwithLongLifeCoolant/Antifreeze.

9.AttachalabeltothecoolingsystemtoindicatethesystemhasbeenconvertedtouseLongLife Coolant/Antifreeze.

Walk-AroundInspection

InspectMachine

1.Inspectandreplacelights,brokenbulbsandlenses.

2.Inspectandremoveanytrashbuild-upinandaroundtheengine.

3.Inspectandrepairanycoolingsystemorenginecomponentleaks.

4.Checkthefuelfiltersforwater.

5.Inspectstepsandhandholdsforconditionandcleanliness.Repairorcleanifnecessary.

6.Inspectthehydraulicsystemforleaks.Inspectthetank,hoses,tubes,plugs,jointsandfittings. Correctanyleaks.

7.Besurecoversandguardsarefirmlyinplace.Inspectfordamage.

8.Inspectoperator'scompartmentforcleanlinessandremovealltrash.

9.Inspectandrepairtheinstrumentpanelwhenbrokengaugesandlightsarefound.

10.Inspecthydraulicmotorsforleaks.

11.Inspecttherubberisolationblocks,betweenthevibratorydrumandthemachineframefor damage,crackingorsplitting.RefertotheServiceManualoryourCaterpillardealerforthe completeisolationblockreplacementprocedure.

SeatBelt

InspectforWearorDamage

Alwayscheckconditionofseatbeltandmountinghardwarebeforeoperatingmachine.Replace anydamagedorwornparts.

Replacetheseatbeltafterthreeyearsofusage,regardlessofappearance.

Seatbeltandmountinghardwaremustbeinspectedforwearordamage.Replacethebeltor mountinghardwareifwornordamaged.

EngineAirIntakeSystem

CheckServiceIndicator

Yourenginemayormaynotbeequippedwithadifferentindicatordependingonyourapplication.

NOTICE

Neverservicetheaircleanerwiththeenginerunningsincethiswill allowdirttoentertheengine.

Aserviceindicatorismountedontheaircleanerorinaremotelocation.Acoloredpistonshowing inthewindowindicatestheneedforservicingtheaircleaner.Observetheaircleanerservice indicator.Cleanorreplacetheaircleanerwhenthegreendiaphragmenterstheredzoneorthered pistonlocksinthevisibleposition.Iftheaircleanerindicatorshowsredatanytime,cleanthe filterelementorinstallanewaircleanerelement.

1.Opentherightaccesscover.

2.Releasethecoverfastenersandremovetheendcoverontheaircleanerhousing.Removeand emptythedustcollectorcup.

3.Removetheaircleanercoverandelement,andcovertheairinlet.

4.Cleantheinsideoftheaircleanercoverandbodywithaclean,drycloth.Inspectsealsbetween thelowerbodyandthedustcollectorcup.Inspectsealsbetweenthelowerandupperbodiesand installnewsealsifnecessary.

5.Inspectthereplacementelementfordamage,dirtordebris.Removethecoveringfromtheair inletandinstalltheneworcleaned,undamagedelement.Installlowerbodytoupperbodyand tightenretainingclamp(s).

6.Installdustcupandtightenretainingclamp.Resettheserviceindicator.

HeavyDutyAirCleanersOnly

Servicetheaircleanerusingtheaircleanerindicatorasthebasisfordeterminingtheconditionof theelements.

Iftheaircleanerelementbecomesplugged,butdoesnotsplit,engineperformancewilldeteriorate andoutputpowerwillbereduced.

Keepsparefilterelementsonhandforreplacement.

Fortheproceduretocleanorreplacetheoptionalheavydutyaircleanerelements,refertothe topicCleaningAirCleanerElements.

CleaningAirCleanerElements

NOTICE

Donotcleanthefilterelementsbybumpingortappingthem.Engine damagecouldresult.

Donotusefilterelementswithdamagedpleats,gasketsorseals.

NOTE:Mostaircleanerfilterelementscanbecleanedwithair,waterordetergent.Havespare elementsonhandtousewhilecleaningusedelements.

Filterelementscanbecleanedwithpressureair-205kPa(30psi)maximum,pressurewater-280 kPa(40psi)maximum,ordetergentwashing.

1.Directairorwateralongthepleatsinsideandoutsideoffilterelement.

Theelementcanbewashedinwarmwaterandnonsudsinghouseholddetergent.Rinseinsideand outsidethepleatsandairdryfully.

2.Inspectthefilterelementsaftercleaning.Donotuseafilterelementwithdamagedpleats, gasketsorseals.

3.Wrapandstorethecleanfilterelementsinaclean,dryplace.

4.Resettheserviceindicator.

Formoreinformationonaircleanerelementcleaning,refertoyourCaterpillardealerorOEM manufacturer.

CheckPrecleaner(IfEquipped)

Checktheprecleaner(ifequipped)foraccumulationofdirtanddebris.Removeanydirtand debrisasneeded.

NOTE:Morefrequentcleaningwillberequiredindustyapplications.

Removethewingnutandtopcoveroftheprecleanerandcheckforanaccumulationofdirtand debris.Cleanifnecessary.

Aftercleaning,installthecoverandwingnut.

EngineCrankcase

NOTICE

MakesureyoureadandunderstandtheinformationintheLubricant Specificationssectionofthismanualbeforeyouproceedwith maintenanceofthecrankcaselubeoilsystem.

CheckOilLevel

1.Checktheoillevelwiththeenginestopped.DONOTchecktheoillevelwiththeengine running.

NOTE:RefertotheRefillCapacitieschartandLubricantSpecificationstoshowtheproper amountandqualityofoiltobeusedatoilchangetime,andtodeterminethecorrectlevelonthe dipstickforyourapplication.

2.MaintaintheoillevelbetweentheADD(MIN)andFULL(MAX)marksonthedipstick. EnsurethattheengineoillevelisnotabovetheFULL(MAX)markonthedipstick.DONOT overfilltoreachaboveor,totopofFULL(MAX)markonthedipstick.

NOTE:OperatingyourenginewhentheoillevelisabovetheFULL(MAX)markcouldcause yourcrankshafttodipintotheoil.Ifthishappens,theairbubblescreatedfromthecrankshaft dippingintotheoilwillreducethelubricatingcharacteristicsofyouroilandcouldresultinthe lossofpower.

IfthedipstickdoesnothaveaFULL(MAX)mark,refertocalibratingtheoillevelgaugeby consultingyourCaterpillardealerbeforeoperatingtheengine.

3.Removetheoilfillercapandaddoilifnecessary.Theminimumcapacity(ADDoilmark)is5.6 liter(5.9U.S.quart)forthe3054engine.SeeRefillCapacitiesandLubricantSpecificationsfor thesizeofyourenginecrankcaseandrecommendedoiltouse.

NOTE:RemotemountedorauxiliaryoilfilterswillrequireadditionaloilthanwhattheRefill Capacitieschartstates.Forallinformationpertainingtoauxiliaryoilfilters,refertotheOEM filtermanufacturer'sinstructions.

HydraulicOilSystem

CheckChargePressureIndicator

Verifythehydraulicchargepressure.WiththeenginerunningatHIGHIDLE,observethecharge pressureindicator.Iftheindicatorlightisonandthehornblows,checktheindicatoronthe hydraulicfilter.Iftheindicatorisintheredzone,replacethefilter.RefertoHydraulicOilSystem, Every1000ServiceHoursor12Months.

NOTICE

Ifthechargepressureindicatorisonandtheindicatoronthefilteris NOTintheredzone,thecauseforlowchargepressuremustbe determined.ContactyourCaterpillardealer.

CheckOilLevel

NOTICE

Takeextremecaretoinsurethecleanlinessofhydraulicoil.Keep hydraulicoilcleantoextendcomponentlifeandassuremaximum performance.DONOTOVERFILL.

1.ObservethehydraulicoillevelwhentheoilisWARM.Maintainoilleveltothelevelmarkon thedecalnearsightgauge(1).

NOTE:Donotoverfill.Hotoilwillindicateanabovelevelcondition.

2.Iftheoillevelislow,removeoilfillcap(2).

3.Addoilthroughthefilltubewhileobservingsightgauge.Filltothelevelindicatoronthedecal. Donotoverfill.

4.Cleanandinstalloilfillcap(2).

MakesureyoureadandunderstandtheinformationintheCooling SystemSpecificationssectionofthismanualbeforeyouproceedwith maintenanceofthecoolingsystem.

CheckCoolantLevel

1.Checkthecoolantlevelwiththeenginestoppedandcool.

2.Removethefillercapslowlytorelieveanypressure.

3.Maintainthecoolantlevelwithin13mm(1/2inch)belowthebottomofthefillpipeortothe properlevelonthesightglass,ifequipped.
