Maintenance

Themaintenancesectionisaguidetoequipmentcare.TheMaintenanceIntervalSchedule(MIS)lists theitemstobemaintainedataspecificserviceinterval.Itemswithoutspecificintervalsarelisted underthe"WhenRequired"serviceinterval.TheMaintenanceIntervalScheduleliststhepage numberforthestep-by-stepinstructionsrequiredtoaccomplishthescheduledmaintenance.Usethe MaintenanceIntervalScheduleasanindexor"onesafesource"forallmaintenanceprocedures.

MaintenanceIntervals

Usetheservicehourmetertodetermineservicingintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily,weekly, monthly,etc.)canbeusedinsteadofservicehourmeterintervalsiftheyprovidemoreconvenient servicingschedulesandapproximatetheindicatedservicehourmeterreading.Recommendedservice shouldalwaysbeperformedattheintervalthatoccursfirst.

Underextremelysevere,dustyorwetoperatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationthanisspecified inthemaintenanceintervalschartmightbenecessary.

Performserviceonitemsatmultiplesoftheoriginalrequirement.Forexample,atevery500service hoursor3months,alsoservicethoseitemslistedunderevery250servicehoursormonthlyandevery 10servicehoursordaily.

CaliforniaProposition65Warning

DieselengineexhaustandsomeofitsconstituentsareknowntotheStateofCaliforniatocause cancer,birthdefects,andotherreproductiveharm.

Batteryposts,terminalsandrelatedaccessoriescontainleadandleadcompounds.Washhandsafter handling.

CertifiedEngineMaintenance

Propermaintenanceandrepairisessentialtokeeptheengineandmachinesystemsoperating correctly.Astheheavydutyoff-roaddieselengineowner,youareresponsiblefortheperformanceof therequiredmaintenancelistedintheOwnerManual,OperationandMaintenanceManual,and ServiceManual.

Itisprohibitedforanypersonengagedinthebusinessofrepairing,servicing,selling,leasing,or tradingenginesormachinestoremove,alter,orrenderinoperativeanyemissionrelateddeviceor elementofdesigninstalledonorinanengineormachinethatisincompliancewiththeregulations (40CFRPart89).Certainelementsofthemachineandenginesuchastheexhaustsystem,fuel system,electricalsystem,intakeairsystemandcoolingsystemmaybeemissionrelatedandshould notbealteredunlessapprovedbyCaterpillar.

MachineCapacity

Additionalattachmentsormodificationsmayexceedmachinedesigncapacitywhichcanadversely affectperformancecharacteristics.Includedwouldbestabilityandsystemcertificationssuchas brakes,steering,androlloverprotectivestructures(ROPS).ContactyourCatdealerforfurther information.

CatProductIdentificationNumber

EffectiveFirstQuarter2001theCatProductIdentificationNumber(PIN)haschangedfrom8to17 characters.Inanefforttoprovideuniformequipmentidentification,Caterpillarandotherconstruction equipmentmanufacturersaremovingtocomplywiththelatestversionoftheproductidentification numberingstandard.Non-roadmachinePINsaredefinedbyISO10261.ThenewPINformatwill applytoallCatmachinesandgeneratorsets.ThePINplatesandframemarkingwilldisplaythe17 characterPIN.Thenewformatwilllooklikethefollowing:

4.MachineIndicatorSection(MIS)orProductSequenceNumber(characters10-17).Thesewere previouslyreferredtoastheSerialNumber.

MachinesandgeneratorsetsproducedbeforeFirstQuarter2001willmaintaintheir8characterPIN format.

Componentssuchasengines,transmissions,axles,etc.andworktoolswillcontinuetousean8 characterSerialNumber(S/N).

ParkingBrake-Theparkingbrake switchwillilluminatewhentheparking brakeisapplied.Thelightwillremain illuminatediftheparkingbrakeswitch ispulledupinordertoreleasethebrake andthepropelleverisnotintheSTOP position.Inordertomovethemachine, thepropellevermustbeintheSTOP positionbeforetheparkingbrakeis released.

Alternator(1)-Thelampilluminates whenthealternatorismalfunctioning.If theindicatorilluminates,stopthe machineinasafearea.Investigatethe causeoftheproblem.Checkforaloose beltorabrokenbelt.Repairtheproblem beforeusingthemachine.

EngineOilPressure(2)-Thelight illuminateswhentheengineoilpressure isloworthereisamalfunctionofthe system.

Iftheengineoilpressurelightilluminatesandthereisanaudiblealarm,stoptheengine.Investigate thecauseofthealarm.Donotoperatethemachineuntilthecauseofthealarmhasbeenrepaired.

EngineCoolantTemperature(3)-The lightindicatesoverheatingoftheengine coolantoramalfunctionofthesystem.

Ifthelightfortheenginecoolanttemperatureilluminatesandthereisanaudiblealarm,stopthe machineinaconvenientarea.Investigatethecauseofthealarm.Donotoperatethemachineuntilthe causeofthealarmhasbeenrepaired.

HydraulicChargePressure(4)-The lightindicateslowhydrauliccharge pressure.

Ifthelightilluminatesandanaudiblealarmsounds,stopthemachine.Ifnecessary,changethefilter. Investigatethesystemforotherproblemsifchangingthefilterdoesnotcorrecttheproblem.Donot operatethemachineuntiltheproblemhasbeenrepaired.

HydraulicOilTemperature(5)-The lightwillilluminateifthehydraulicoil inthehydraulictankistoohot.

Ifthelightforthehydraulictemperatureilluminates,stopthemachine.Movethethrottleswitchto lowidle.Allowthemachinetoidleforafewminutes.Resumeusingthemachineifthetemperature returnstothenormaltemperature.Ifthetemperatureremainsabovenormal,stopthemachine. Investigatethecauseofthealarm.Donotoperatethemachineuntilthecauseofthealarmhasbeen repaired.

Athree-positionadjustmentknobonthebackofthebackupalarmregulatesthevolumelevelofthe backupalarm.ThealarmsettingsareHIGH,LOW,andMEDIUM.

Thethree-positionadjustmentknobissettotheHIGHsettingwhenthemachineisshippedfromthe factory.Thethree-positionadjustmentknobshouldremainattheHIGHsettingunlessthejobsite requiresalowervolumelevel.

OFF-Inordertodeactivatethe electricalsystem,turnthekey counterclockwise.

ON-Toactivatetheelectrical system,insertthekeyandturn theswitchinaclockwise direction.Theswitchmustbe intheONpositioninorderto starttheengine.

Thebatterydisconnectswitchandtheenginestartswitchperformdifferentfunctions.Theentire electricalsystemisdisabledwhenyouturnthebatterydisconnectswitchtotheOFFposition.The batteryremainsconnectedtotheelectricalsystemwhenyouturntheenginestartswitchtotheOFF position.

TurnthebatterydisconnectswitchtotheOFFpositionandremovethekeywhenyouservicethe electricalsystemoranyothermachinecomponents.

NOTICE

NevermovethebatterydisconnectswitchtotheOFFpositionwhilethe engineisoperating.Seriousdamagetotheelectricalsystemcould result.

Toensurethatnodamagetotheengineoccurs,verifythattheengineisfullyoperationalbefore crankingtheengine.Donotcrankanenginethatisnotfullyoperational.

Performthefollowingprocedureinordertocheckthebatterydisconnectswitchforproperoperation:

1.WiththebatterydisconnectswitchintheONposition,verifythatelectricalcomponentsinthe operatorcompartmentarefunctioning.Verifythatthehourmeterisdisplayinginformation. Verifythattheenginewillcrank.

2.TurnthebatterydisconnectswitchtotheOFFposition.

3.Verifythatthefollowingitemsarenotfunctioning:electricalcomponentsintheoperator compartment,hourmeterandenginecranking.Ifanyoftheitemscontinuetofunctionwiththe batterydisconnectswitchintheOFFposition,consultyourCaterpillardealer.

Atoperatingtemperature,theenginecoolantishotandunderpressure.

Steamcancausepersonalinjury.

Checkthecoolantlevelonlyaftertheenginehasbeenstoppedandthe coolingsystempressurecapiscoolenoughtotouchwithyourbare hand.

Removethecoolingsystempressurecapslowlytorelievepressure.

Coolingsystemconditionercontainsalkali.Avoidcontactwiththeskin andeyestopreventpersonalinjury.

NOTICE

Accumulatedgreaseandoilonamachineisafirehazard.Removethis debriswithsteamcleaningorhighpressurewater,atleastevery1000 hoursoreachtimeanysignificantquantityofoilisspilledona machine.

Foramaximumservicelifeofthemachine,completeathoroughwalk-aroundinspectionbeforeyou mountthemachineandbeforeyoustarttheengine.

Inspecttheareaaroundthemachineandunderthemachine.Lookforloosebolts,trashbuildup,oil, coolantleakage,brokenparts,orwornparts.

Note:Watchcloselyforleaks.Ifyouobservealeak,findthesourceoftheleakandcorrecttheleak. Ifyoususpectaleakoryouobservealeak,checkthefluidlevelsmorefrequently.

Inspecttheconditionoftheequipmentandofthehydrauliccomponents.

Checktheconditionofthetires.Adjusttheinflationpressure,ifnecessary.

Checkalloftheoillevels,allofthecoolantlevels,andallofthefuellevels.

Removeanytrashbuildupanddebris.Makeallnecessaryrepairsbeforeyouoperatethemachine.

Makesurethatallcoversandguardsaresecurelyattached.

Adjustthemirrorsforthecorrectrearviewofthemachine.

Makesurethattheengineairfilterserviceindicatorisnotintheredzone.

Greaseallofthefittingsthatneedtobeservicedonadailybasis.

Ifitdoesnotregisterorthelightdoesnotgooutwithintenseconds, stoptheengineandinvestigatethecausebeforestartingagain.Failure todoso,cancauseenginedamage.

1.AllowacoldenginetowarmupatLOWIDLEforatleastfiveminutes.

2.Lookatthegaugesandtheindicatorlightsfrequentlyduringoperation.

Ifthealternatorindicatorlampremainsilluminated,inspectthemachineforthecauseofthe trouble.Ifthegaugesdonotrespondproperly,inspectthemachineforthetrouble.Before movingthemachine,repairallproblems.

3.Cycleallcontrolsinordertoallowwarmoiltocirculatethroughallofthelinesandthe cylinders.

Observethefollowingrecommendationsduringthewarm-upperiodfortheengine:

•Intemperaturesabove0°C(32°F),thewarm-upperiodis15minutes.

•Intemperaturesbelow0°C(32°F),thewarm-upperiodis30minutesoralongerperiodoftime.

•Intemperaturesbelow-18°C(0°F),moretimeisrequiredifthehydrauliccontrolsaresluggish.

Anairinletheaterisinstalledintheairinletmanifold.Theairinletheaterisanelectricaldevice whichwarmstheinletairtoaidincoldweatherstarting.

Note:Startabilitywillbeimprovedattemperaturesbelow16°C(60°F)bytheuseoftheairinlet heater.Thiswillhelpreducewhitesmokeandmisfireduringstart-upincoldweather.

Startabilitywillbeimprovedattemperaturesbelow-18°C(0°F)fromtheuseofacylinderblock coolantheaterorextrabatterycapacity.

WhenNo.2dieselfuelisused,thefollowingitemsprovideameansofminimizingstartingproblems andfuelproblemsincoldweather:startingaids,engineoilpanheaters,enginecoolantheaters,fuel heatersandfuellineinsulation.

Fortemperaturesbelow-23°C(-10°F),consultyourdealer.

1.Turntheignitionswitch(1)totheONposition.

NOTICE

Donotengagethestartingmotorwhenflywheelisturning.Donotstart theengineunderload.

Iftheenginefailstostartwithin30seconds,releasethestarterswitch orbuttonandwaittwominutestoallowthestartingmotortocool beforeattemptingtostarttheengineagain.

2.Pushtheairinletheaterswitch(2)andholdtheairinletheaterswitchfor20seconds.Turnthe ignitionswitchtotheSTARTpositioninordertocranktheengine.Cranktheenginefor15 secondsoruntiltheenginestarts.Iftheenginefailstostart,turntheignitionswitchtotheON positionandholdtheairinletheaterswitchfor10seconds.Turntheignitionswitchtothe STARTpositioninordertocranktheengine.Cranktheenginefor15secondsoruntilthe enginestarts.RuntheengineatHIGHidleandmovetoLOWidleforwarm-up.

AllowtheignitionswitchtoreturntotheRUNpositionassoonastheenginestarts.

NOTICE

Oilpressureshouldrisewithin15secondsaftertheenginestarts.Do notincreaseenginespeeduntiltheoilpressuregaugeindicatesnormal. Ifoilpressureisnotindicatedonthegaugewithin15seconds,DO NOToperatetheengine.STOPtheengine,investigateandcorrectthe cause.

3.Allowtheenginetoidleforthreetofiveminutes.Theengineshouldrunathighidlesmoothly beforedecreasingtolowidle.Allowthewhitesmoketodispersebeforeyouproceedwith normaloperation.

4.Operatetheengineatlowloaduntilallsystemsreachoperatingtemperature.Checkallgauges duringthewarm-upperiod.

EngineStartingwithAuxiliaryStartReceptacle

Someproductsmaybeequippedwithauxiliarystartingreceptaclesasastandardpart.Allother machinescanbeequippedwithareceptaclefrompartsservice.Then,apermanentreceptacleis alwaysavailableforjumpstarting.

Twocableassembliesarealsoavailableinordertojumpstartthestalledmachinefromanother machinethatisalsoequippedwiththisreceptacleorwithanauxiliarypowerpack.YourCaterpillar dealercanprovidethecorrectcablesforyourapplication.

1.Maketheinitialdeterminationofthemachine'sfailuretocrank.RefertoSpecialInstruction, SEHS7768,"Useof6V-2150StartingChargingAnalyzerGroup".Theprocedureisapplicable evenifthemachinedoesnothaveadiagnosticconnector.

2.MovethetransmissionofthestalledmachineintoSTOPposition.Engagetheparkingbrake. Lowerallattachmentstotheground.MoveallcontrolstotheHOLDposition.

3.TurntheenginestartswitchonthestalledmachinetotheOFFposition.Turnoffall accessories.

4.Turnonthebatterydisconnectswitchonthestalledmachine.

5.Movethemachinethatisbeingusedasapowersourcesothatthejumpstartcablescanreach thestalledmachine.Donotallowthemachinestocontacteachother.

6.Stoptheengineonthemachinethatisbeingusedasapowersource.Ifyouareusingan auxiliarypowersource,turnoffthechargingsystem.

7.Onthestalledmachine,connecttheappropriatejumpstartcabletotheauxiliarystarting receptacle.

8.Connecttheotherendofthejumpstartcabletotheauxiliarystartingreceptaclethatisonthe powersource.

9.Starttheengineonthemachinethatisbeingusedasapowersource.Ifyouareusingan auxiliarypowersource,energizethechargingsystemontheauxiliarypowersource.

10.Waitforaminimumoftwominuteswhilethebatteriesinthestalledmachinepartiallycharge.

11.Attempttostartthestalledengine.RefertoOperationandMaintenanceManual,"Engine Starting".

12.Immediatelyafteryoustartthestalledengine,disconnectthejumpstartcablefromthemachine thatisbeingusedasapowersource.

13.Disconnecttheotherendofthejumpstartcablefromthestalledmachine.
