MaintenanceIntervals

Usetheservicehourmetertodetermineservicingintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily,weekly, monthly,etc.)canbeusedinsteadofservicehourmeterintervalsiftheyprovidemoreconvenient servicingschedulesandapproximatetheindicatedservicehourmeterreading.Recommendedservice shouldalwaysbeperformedattheintervalthatoccursfirst.

Underextremelysevere,dustyorwetoperatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationthanisspecified intheMaintenanceIntervalschartmightbenecessary.

CoolingSystemSpecifications

CoolantInformation

Thepropercoolantmixtureisimportantintoday'sdieselengines.Dieselengineoperating temperatureshaveincreasedtoimproveengineefficiency.Thisalsomeanspropercoolingsystem maintenanceisespeciallyimportant.Overheating,excessivecooling,componentpitting,cavitation erosion,pistonseizuresandpluggedheatexchangersareresultsofcoolingsystemfailures.

Propercoolantiscritical,asisthequalityoffuelandlubricatingoil.Maintenancepracticesmayneed tobere-evaluatedtoproperlymaintaintheengine'scoolingsystem.Itisimportantthatthissectionbe readcarefully.

NOTICE

Neveroperatewithoutathermostatinthecoolingsystem.The thermostatsmaintaintheenginecoolantattheproperoperating temperature.

Neveraddcoolantorwatertoanoverheatedengine,enginedamage canresult.Allowtheenginetocoolfirst.Fillingatover5U.S.gallon (20L)perminutecancauseairpocketsinthecoolingsystem.

Caterpillardoesnotrecommendtheuseofcoolingsystemsolutions thatareintendedtostopleaks.Useoftheseproductsmayresultin enginedamage.

Caterpillarrecommendsthatthecoolantmixturecontainaminimum of30%CaterpillarAntifreeze,orequivalent.

Thecoolingsystemshouldbeprotectedwithaminimumof3% concentrationofliquidsupplementalcoolantadditiveatalltimes, regardlessoftheconcentrationofantifreeze.

Iftheengineistobestoredin,orshippedto,anareawithfreezing temperatures,thecoolingsystemmustbeprotectedtothelowest expectedoutside(ambient)temperature.

CoolantMixtureforCaterpillarEngines

Properenginecoolantisacombinationofwater,antifreezeandsupplementalcoolantadditive.Each ingredientofthemixturemustmeetspecificguidelinesfortheenginecoolanttoperformproperly. ThecoolantmixtureusedinCaterpillarenginesmustprovidethefollowingfunctions.

*Adequateheattransfer.

*Cavitationerosionprotection.

*Freeze&boilprotection.

*Sludge&scaleprotection.

*Corrosionprotection.

*Compatibilitywithsystemhoses&seals.

Water(Coolant)

Allwateriscorrosiveatengineoperatingtemperature.Distilledordeionizedwaterisrecommended becauseoflessmineraldropoutthanhardortapwater.Tapwater,evenartificiallysoftenedwithsalt, isnotrecommendedforuseinyourengine'scoolingsystem.

Calcium,magnesium,chloridesandsulfatesareallmineralsthatmakeupthedissolvedsolidsinthe water.Excessiveamountsoftheseminerals(inhardwater)cancombinewithsupplementalcoolant additives(silicatesandphosphates)toformsludgeorscaledeposits.Themineraldeposits(silicates, phosphates,calciumandmagnesium)reducetheeffectivenessofthecoolingsystem,especiallyaftera numberofheatingandcoolingcycles.Theymaycollectonhotinternalenginesurfacesandinthe coolingsystemtoreducetheeffectivenessofthecoolingsystem.

Ifdistilledorde-ionizedwaterisNOTavailable,usewaterthatmeetstheminimumacceptable requirementsinthechart.Todetermineyourwatercharacteristics,contactthelocalwaterdepartment, agriculturalagentoranindependentlaboratorytoperformthetestingservice.

NOTE:Someapplicationshaveelectedtorunwithsupplementalcoolantadditivetreatedwater withoutglycol.DonotmixcoolantadditivetreatedwaterinthecoolingsystemwithCaterpillar Antifreeze.Thisincompatibilitycouldcausecoolingsystemdamagebecausethecoolantwillhavean excessiveconcentrationofcoolantadditive.Followtheinstructionsprovidedbytheantifreeze supplier.

NOTICE

Caterpillarrecommendsthatthecoolantmixturecontainaminimum of30%CaterpillarAntifreeze(orequivalent)with70%distilledor deionizedwatertomaintainanadequatecavitationtemperaturefor efficientwaterpumpperformance.Antifreezeconcentrationshouldbe selectedtoprovideprotectiontothelowestexpectedoutside(ambient) temperature.

Checkthespecificgravityoftheantifreezesolutionfrequentlyincold weathertoensureadequatefreezeprotection.Premixcoolantsolution toprovideprotectiontothelowestexpectedoutside(ambient) temperature.Pureundilutedantifreezewillfreezeat-10°F(-23°C).

Antifreezeconcentrationsabove60%antifreezeto40%waterare NOTrecommendedbecausethehigherconcentrationslimittheability ofthecoolantmixturetoabsorbsupplementalcoolantadditive.

UseCaterpillarAntifreezeoranylowsilicate(ethyleneorpropyleneglycol)antifreezethatmeets ASTMD4985-89(GMSpecification6038-M)requirements.Mostcommercialantifreezesare formulatedforgasolineengineapplicationsandhavehighsilicatecontent.CaterpillarAntifreezeis formulatedwithalowsilicatecontentandthepropercoolantadditivesforheavydutydieselengines.

CaterpillarAntifreezeisavailablethroughyourCaterpillardealerinquantitiesthatfollow.

Addingpureundilutedantifreezeasamakeupsolutionforcoolingsystemtop-offisanunacceptable practice.Addantifreezepremixedwithacceptablewatertothesamefreezeprotectionasyourcooling system.UsetheAntifreezeConcentrationcharttoassistindeterminingtheconcentrationof CaterpillarAntifreezetouse.

Checkthecoolantsolutionfrequentlyincoldweatherforglycolconcentrationwiththe5P-0957or5P -3514CoolantTester(forCaterpillarproducts)toensureadequatefreezeprotection.Thetestersare identicalexcepttemperaturescales(°Cor°F)andgiveimmediateaccuratereadingsfor antifreeze/coolantsthatcontainethyleneorpropyleneglycol.Bothtestersareavailableatyour Caterpillardealer.

NOTICE

Ifpropyleneglycolbasedantifreezeisused,DONOTallow concentrationgreaterthana50/50antifreezetowatermixture.The measurementoffreezeprotectionmustbemadewitharefractive-type tester(5P-0957or5P-3514)ratherthanthehydrometer-typetester commerciallyavailable.Thehydrometer-typetestercanbeusedtotest ethyleneglycolbasedantifreeze.

SupplementalCoolantAdditive

ThecoolingsystemMUSTcontainsupplementalcoolantadditives(SCA)(conditionerorinhibitor)to controlcorrosion,cavitationanddeposits.Itisalsonecessarytopreventrust,scale,pittingand/or corrosionofenginepartscontactedbycoolant.Thecoolingsystemshouldbeprotectedwitha minimumof3%concentrationatalltimes,regardlessoftheconcentrationofantifreeze.Use supplementalcoolantadditiveliquidORanelement(ifequipped)tomaintaina3-6%concentrationin thecoolingsystem.

NOTICE

Neveruseantifreeze/watercoolantonly,inCaterpillarengineswithout supplementalcoolantadditiveregardlessofantifreezeconcentration.

Caterpillarorothermanufacturer'sproductscanbeusedasthe supplementalcoolantadditive.DonotmixCaterpillarSupplemental CoolantAdditive(Conditioner)liquidorelementswiththeother

commercialproductsavailable;selectacoolingsystemtreatmentand useitexclusively.

Excessiveconcentrationofsupplementalcoolantadditivecanform depositswhichmaycauseenginedamage,reducetheengine'sheat transfercharacteristicsandcouldalsoacceleratewaterpumpseal wear.

Usethe8T-5296TestKittocheckandmonitortheSCAconcentrationforantifreeze/watercoolant mixture.TheCaterpillar8T-5296TestKitchecksforconcentrationofnitratesinthecoolantsolution.

NOTE:Someothermanufacturers'supplementalcoolantadditive(SCA)arephosphatebasedandthe 8T-5296TestKitwillnotprovideaccurateresults.Caterpillarrecommendsthattheirtestkitbeused tocheckcoolantsolutionconcentration.

IfotherthanCaterpillarproductsareusedasthesupplementalcoolantadditive,followthe manufacturers'recommendationforcoolingsystemtreatmentandtestevaluation.Commercial supplementalcoolantadditiveproductsmustcontainsilicatesandaminimumof70gr/U.S.gallon (1200ppm)nitrites.

Caterpillarliquidsupplementalcoolantadditive(Conditioner)isavailablethroughyourCaterpillar dealerinquantitiesthatfollow.

Pre-charge

CaterpillarAntifreezeDOESNOTrequiresupplementalcoolantadditiveaddedatinitialfill,however additiveisrequiredonamaintenancebasis.Forsystemsequippedwithsupplementalcoolantadditive elements,thelastMAINTENANCEelementshouldnotbereplacedatFLUSH&FILLorOverhaul untilthenext250hourinterval.

Water-OnlyCoolant

AlthoughCaterpillarrecommendsaminimumconcentrationof30%antifreeze,acoolantmixtureof acceptablewaterandSupplementalCoolantAdditive(SCA)canbeusedinapplicationswhere conditionsdonotrequirefreezeprotection(orwhereantifreezeisnotavailable).

AcoolantmixtureofwaterandSCAwillcoolandprovidesomeprotectiontoenginecomponents, however,itwillnotprovidenormalengineservicelife.Antifreeze/watermixturesprovidebetter performancelifethanwater-onlycoolant.

IftheenginecoolingsystemisfilledwithwaterONLY,supplementalcoolantadditive(Conditioner) concentrationshouldbemaintainedat6to8percentmaximum.Donotexceed8%maximum concentration.Checkwithsupplementalcoolantadditivetestkit.

Maintenanceofthewater-onlycoolantisthesameasmaintenanceoftheantifreeze/watercoolant. The8T-5296TestKitcanbeusedtoevaluatetheSCAconcentrationofwater-onlycoolantwiththe followingmodificationstoStep3andStep5.

3Addtapwatertothevialuptothe20mlmark.STEP5-Withthedefinedprocedure,the6%to8% concentrationwillyielda20to27droprange.LessdropswillindicateunderconcentrationofSCA andmoredropswillindicateoverconcentration.Adjusttheconcentrationaccordinglytomaintainthe properconcentration.

NOTE:IftheSCAconcentrationisgreaterthanthemaximumof8%,drainsomeofthecoolantand refillwithacceptablewater,thenretesttheconcentrationlevel.

CoolingSystemCleaning

CleanthesystemaccordingtotheMaintenanceIntervalscheduleorsoonerifthecoolantis contaminated,iftheengineoverheatsoriffoamingisobservedintheradiator.Disregardforthe propermaintenanceofthecoolingsystemcancauseengineoverheatingproblemsthatcouldresultin severedamagetotheengineanditscomponents.Iftestingandpropermaintenanceofantifreeze and/orSCAconcentrationsarenotperformedasrecommendedintheMaintenanceIntervalschedule, thesystemdrainintervalmustbeshortened.

Coolantshouldbedrained,thesystemcleanedandnewcoolantaddedbythefuelconsumption interval,Every3000HoursorTwoYears,whichevercomesfirstfortheenginebeingmaintained.If notusingCaterpillarAntifreezeandsupplementalcoolantadditiveasrecommended,thedrainperiod mustbeshortenedtoEvery1500HoursorOneYear.

Whenyoudrain,clean,flushandreplacethecoolant,smallparticles,undesirablechemicals,scaleand otherdepositformationsareremoved.Thesedepositsreducethenecessaryheattransfer characteristicsofthecoolingsystemandaccelerateweartothewaterpumpseal.RefertotheCooling System(Clean/FlushCoolant)topicintheMaintenanceSectionofthismanual.

CaterpillarCoolingSystemCleanersaredesignedtocleanthesystemofharmfulscaleandcorrosion. Itdissolvesmineralscale,corrosionproducts,lightoilcontaminationandsludge.Coolingsystem cleanersareavailablefromyourCaterpillardealerinthequantitieslisted.Followthelabeldirections forproperusage.

Walk-AroundInspection

InspectMachine

1.Inspectandreplacelights,brokenbulbsandlenses.

2.Inspectandremoveanytrashbuild-upinandaroundtheengine.

3.Inspectandrepairanycoolingsystemorenginecomponentleaks.

4.Checkthefuelfiltersforwater.

5.Inspectstepsandhandholdsforconditionandcleanliness.Repairorcleanifnecessary.

6.Inspectthehydraulicsystemforleaks.Inspectthetank,hoses,tubes,plugs,jointsandfittings. Correctanyleaks.

7.Besurecoversandguardsarefirmlyinplace.Inspectfordamage.

8.Inspectoperator'scompartmentforcleanlinessandremovealltrash.

9.Inspectandrepairtheinstrumentpanelwhenbrokengaugesandlightsarefound.

10.Inspecthydraulicmotorsforleaks.

11.Inspecttherubberisolationblocks,betweenthevibratorydrumandthemachineframefor damage,crackingorsplitting.RefertotheServiceManualoryourCaterpillardealerforthecomplete isolationblockreplacementprocedure.

SeatBelt

InspectforWearorDamage

Alwayscheckconditionofseatbeltandmountinghardwarebeforeoperatingmachine.Replaceany damagedorwornparts.

Replacetheseatbeltafterthreeyearsofusage,regardlessofappearance.

Seatbeltandmountinghardwaremustbeinspectedforwearordamage.Replacethebeltormounting hardwareifwornordamaged.

EngineAirIntakeSystem

NOTICE

Neverservicetheaircleanerwiththeenginerunningsincethiswill allowdirttoentertheengine.

Aserviceindicatorismountedontheaircleanerorinaremotelocation.Acoloredpistonshowingin thewindowindicatestheneedforservicingtheaircleaner.Observetheaircleanerserviceindicator. Cleanorreplacetheaircleanerwhenthegreendiaphragmenterstheredzoneortheredpistonlocks inthevisibleposition.Iftheaircleanerindicatorshowsredatanytime,cleanthefilterelementor installanewaircleanerelement.

RemoveandInstallAirCleanerElements

1.Opentherightaccesscover.

2.Releasethecoverfastenersandremovetheendcoverontheaircleanerhousing.Removeand emptythedustcollectorcup.

3.Removetheaircleanercoverandelement,andcovertheairinlet.

4.Cleantheinsideoftheaircleanercoverandbodywithaclean,drycloth.Inspectsealsbetweenthe lowerbodyandthedustcollectorcup.Inspectsealsbetweenthelowerandupperbodiesandinstall newsealsifnecessary.

5.Inspectthereplacementelementfordamage,dirtordebris.Removethecoveringfromtheairinlet andinstalltheneworcleaned,undamagedelement.Installlowerbodytoupperbodyandtighten retainingclamp(s).

6.Installdustcupandtightenretainingclamp.Resettheserviceindicator.

HeavyDutyAirCleanersOnly

Servicetheaircleanerusingtheaircleanerindicatorasthebasisfordeterminingtheconditionofthe elements.

Iftheaircleanerelementbecomesplugged,butdoesnotsplit,engineperformancewilldeteriorate andoutputpowerwillbereduced.

Keepsparefilterelementsonhandforreplacement.

Fortheproceduretocleanorreplacetheoptionalheavydutyaircleanerelements,refertothetopic CleaningAirCleanerElements.

CleaningAirCleanerElements

NOTICE

Donotcleanthefilterelementsbybumpingortappingthem.Engine damagecouldresult.

Donotusefilterelementswithdamagedpleats,gasketsorseals.

NOTE:Mostaircleanerfilterelementscanbecleanedwithair,waterordetergent.Havespare elementsonhandtousewhilecleaningusedelements.

Filterelementscanbecleanedwithpressureair-205kPa(30psi)maximum,pressurewater-280 kPa(40psi)maximum,ordetergentwashing.

1.Directairorwateralongthepleatsinsideandoutsideoffilterelement.

Theelementcanbewashedinwarmwaterandnon-sudsinghouseholddetergent.Rinseinsideand outsidethepleatsandairdryfully.

2.Inspectthefilterelementsaftercleaning.Donotuseafilterelementwithdamagedpleats,gaskets orseals.

MakesureyoureadandunderstandtheinformationintheLubricant Specificationssectionofthismanualbeforeyouproceedwith maintenanceofthecrankcaselubeoilsystem.

CheckOilLevel

1.Checktheoillevelwiththeenginestopped.DONOTchecktheoillevelwiththeenginerunning.

NOTE:RefertotheRefillCapacitieschartandLubricantSpecificationstoshowtheproperamount andqualityofoiltobeusedatoilchangetime,andtodeterminethecorrectlevelonthedipstickfor yourapplication.

2.MaintaintheoillevelbetweentheADD(MIN)andFULL(MAX)marksonthedipstick.Ensure thattheengineoillevelisnotabovetheFULL(MAX)markonthedipstick.

NOTE:OperatingyourenginewhentheoillevelisabovetheFULL(MAX)markcouldcauseyour crankshafttodipintotheoil.Ifthishappens,theairbubblescreatedfromthecrankshaftdippinginto theoilwillreducethelubricatingcharacteristicsofyouroilandcouldresultinthelossofpower.

IfthedipstickdoesnothaveaFULL(MAX)mark,refertocalibratingtheoillevelgaugeby consultingyourCaterpillardealerbeforeoperatingtheengine.

3.Removetheoilfillercapandaddoilifnecessary.Theminimumcapacity(ADDoilmark)is5.6 liter(5.9U.S.quart)forthe3054engine.SeeRefillCapacitiesandLubricantSpecificationsforthe sizeofyourenginecrankcaseandrecommendedoiltouse.

NOTE:RemotemountedorauxiliaryoilfilterswillrequiremoreoilthanwhattheRefillCapacities chartstates.Forallinformationpertainingtoauxiliaryoilfilters,refertotheOEMfilter manufacturer'sinstructions.

HydraulicOilSystem

CheckChargePressureIndicator

Verifythehydraulicchargepressure.WiththeenginewarmedupandrunningatHIGHIDLE, observechargepressureindicator(1).Ifchargepressureindicator(1)isonandthehornblows,check indicator(2)onthehydraulicfilter.Ifindicator(2)isintheredzone,replacethefilter.Referto HydraulicOilSystem,Every500ServiceHoursor6Months.
