1.Parkthemachineonalevelsurface,andstoptheengine.

2.Allowtheoiltodrainbacktothesumpforaminimumof10minutes.

3.Opentheenginecompartment.

4.Removeengineoillevelgauge(1).Wipetheengineoillevelgaugewithacleancloth. Inserttheengineoillevelgauge.Removetheengineoillevelgaugeandnotetheoillevel. Inserttheengineoillevelgauge.

Note:RefertotheOperationandMaintenanceManual,"LubricantViscosities"and OperationandMaintenanceManual,"Capacities(Refill)"forthecorrectamountofoilthat isusedwhentheoilischanged.Thecorrectamountofoildeterminesthecorrectlevelofthe oilontheengineoillevelgauge.

NOTICE

Donotoverfillthecrankcase.Theoillevelmustnotreachthetopof theFULLrangemarkorabovetheFULLrangemark.

5.Maintaintheoillevelontheengineoillevelgaugebetweenthe"MIN"markandthe "MAX"mark.Addoiliftheoillevelistoolow.Iftheoilleveliscorrect,closetheengine compartment.

Note:Operatingyourenginewiththeoillevelabovethe"MAX"markontheoillevel gaugecouldcausethecrankshafttodipintotheoil.Thiscouldresultinexcessivelyhigh

operatingtemperatures.Thehighoperatingtemperaturescouldresultinreducedlubricating characteristicsoftheoil.Thiscouldcausebearingdamageandlossofenginepower.

Inspecttheenginemountsfordeterioration.

Replaceanyenginemountthatisdeteriorated.

Inspecttheenginemountsforcorrectbolttorque.

Tightenthemountsifthemountsareloose.

Closetheenginecompartment.

Hotoilandhotcomponentscancausepersonalinjury.Donotallowhot oilorhotcomponentstocontacttheskin.

ObtaintheSampleandtheAnalysis

Inadditiontoagoodpreventivemaintenanceprogram,CaterpillarrecommendsusingS·O·Soil analysisatregularscheduledintervalsinordertomonitortheconditionoftheengineandthe maintenancerequirementsoftheengine.

Eachoilsampleshouldbetakenwhentheoiliswarmandwhentheoiliswellmixed.Thesample shouldbetakenatthistimeinordertoensurethatthesampleisrepresentativeoftheoilinthe crankcase.

ObtaintheS·O·SSample

UsethefollowingmethodinordertoobtainanS·O·Ssample:

•Usea1U-5718VacuumPumporuseanequivalentpumpthatisinsertedintothesump.

Toavoidcontaminationoftheoilsamples,thetoolsandthesuppliesthatareusedforobtainingoil samplesmustbeclean.

ConsultyourCaterpillardealerforcompleteinformationandassistanceinestablishinganS·O·S programforyourengine.

Ifyoufilltheenginetoofastwithoil,theoilmaysaturatetheenginebreather.Ifthebreatheris saturatedwithoil,oilwillblowoutofthebreatherhoseuntilthebreatherisfreeofoil.Addthe engineoilatarateof2L/min(0.5283USgpm).Thiswillhelppreventsaturatingthebreather withoil.

1.Removecover(2)fortheairfilterhousingbyunlatchingthe2clipsholdingthecoveronto thefilterhousing.

2.Removeprimaryfilterelement(1)fromtheairfilterhousing.

3.Cleantheinsidetheairfilterhousing.

4.Cleandustcap(3).

5.Installacleanprimaryairfilterelement.Installthecoverfortheairfilterhousingwiththe dustcappointingdown.

6.Closethehood.

Aftercleaningtheprimaryfilterelement,iftheairfilterindicatortriggersafterstartingtheengine ortheexhaustsmokeisstillblack,installanewprimaryfilterelement.Iftheairfilterindicator remainsactivated,replacethesecondaryelement.

CleaningPrimaryAirFilterElements

NOTICE

Caterpillarrecommendscertifiedairfiltercleaningservicesavailable atparticipatingCaterpillardealers.TheCaterpillarcleaningprocess usesprovenprocedurestoassureconsistentqualityandsufficientfilter life.

Observethefollowingguidelinesifyouattempttocleanthefilter element:

Donottaporstrikethefilterelementinordertoremovedust.

Donotwashthefilterelement.

Uselowpressurecompressedairinordertoremovethedustfromthe filterelement.Airpressuremustnotexceed207kPa(30psi).Directthe airflowupthepleatsanddownthepleatsfromtheinsideofthefilter element.Takeextremecareinordertoavoiddamagetothepleats.

Donotuseairfilterswithdamagedpleats,gaskets,orseals.Dirt enteringtheenginewillcausedamagetoenginecomponents.

Theprimaryairfilterelementcanbeuseduptosixtimesiftheelementisproperlycleanedandif theelementisproperlyinspected.Whentheprimaryairfilterelementiscleaned,checkforripsor tearsinthefiltermaterial.Theprimaryairfilterelementshouldbereplacedatleastonetimeper year.Thisreplacementshouldbeperformedregardlessofthenumberofcleanings.

NOTICE

Donotcleantheairfilterelementsbybumpingortapping.Thiscould damagetheseals.Donotuseelementswithdamagedpleats,gaskets,or seals.Damagedelementswillallowdirttopassthrough.Engine damagecouldresult.

Visuallyinspecttheprimaryairfilterelementsbeforecleaning.Inspecttheairfilterelementsfor damagetotheseal,thegaskets,andtheoutercover.Discardanydamagedairfilterelements.

Therearetwocommonmethodsthatareusedtocleanprimaryairfilterelements:

•Pressurizedair

•Vacuumcleaning

PressurizedAir

Pressurizedaircanbeusedtocleantheprimaryairfilterelement.Donotcleantheprimaryair filterwithpressurizedairmorethantwotimes.Pressurizedairwillnotremovedepositsofcarbon andoil.Usefiltered,dryairwithamaximumpressureof207kPa(30psi).

Note:Whentheprimaryairfilterelementsarecleaned,alwaysbeginwiththecleanside(inside) toforcedirtparticlestowardthedirtyside(outside).

Aimthehosesothattheairflowsinsidetheelementalongthelengthofthefiltertohelpprevent damagetothepaperpleats.Donotaimthestreamofairdirectlyattheprimaryairfilterelement. Dirtcouldbeforcedfurtherintothepleats.

VacuumCleaning

Vacuumcleaningisanothermethodforcleaningprimaryairfilterelementswhichrequiredaily cleaningbecauseofadry,dustyenvironment.Cleaningwithpressurizedairisrecommendedprior tovacuumcleaning.Vacuumcleaningwillnotremovedepositsofcarbonandoil.

InspectingthePrimaryAirFilterElements

Inspecttheclean,dryprimaryairfilterelement.Usea60wattbluelightinadarkroomorina similarfacility.Placethebluelightintheprimaryairfilterelement.Rotatetheprimaryairfilter element.Inspecttheprimaryairfilterelementfortearsand/orholes.Inspecttheprimaryairfilter elementforlightthatmayshowthroughthefiltermaterial.Ifitisnecessarytoconfirmtheresult, comparetheprimaryairfilterelementtoanewprimaryairfilterelementthathasthesamepart number.

Donotuseaprimaryairfilterelementthathasanytearsand/orholesinthefiltermaterial.Donot useaprimaryairfilterelementwithdamagedpleats,gaskets,orseals.Discarddamagedprimary airfilterelements.

StoringPrimaryAirFilterElements

Ifaprimaryairfilterelementthatpassesinspectionwillnotbeused,theprimaryairfilterelement canbestoredforfutureuse.

EngineOilandFilter-Change

Runtheenginetowarmuptheoil.Stoptheenginebeforeyoudraintheoil.Whentheoiliswarm, thewasteparticlesaresuspendedintheoil.Thewasteparticleswillberemovedwhentheoilis drained.

Astheoilcools,thewasteparticlessettletothebottomoftheoilpan.Thewasteparticleswillnot beremovediftheoilistoocool.

Thewasteparticlescanrecirculatethroughtheenginelubricationsystemiftherecommended procedureisnotfollowed.

1.Opentheenginehood.RefertotheOperationandMaintenanceManual,"AccessDoorsand Covers".

2.Placeasuitablecontainerunderthedrainplug(1).Thedrainplugislocatedbelowthefront frame.Removethedrainplug.RefertotheOperationandMaintenanceManual,"General HazardInformation"forinformationthatpertainstocontainingfluidspillage.

3.Allowtheoiltodrain.

4.Reinstallthedrainplug.

5.Removefilterelement(2).

Note:Discardtheusedfilterelementaccordingtolocalregulations.

6.Cleanthefilterhousingbase.Alltheoldfiltersealmustberemovedfromthefilterhousing base.

7.Applyathincoatofengineoiltothesealofthenewfilterelement.

8.Installthenewfilterbyhand.Whenthegasketcontactsthefilterbase,tightenthefilter elementforanextra3/4turn.Thiswilltightenthefiltersufficiently.

Everynewoilfilterhasrotationindexmarksthatarespacedat90degreeincrements.Use therotationindexmarksasaguidefortighteningtheoilfilter.

9.Removeoilfillercap(3).Fillthecrankcasewithnewoil.SeeOperationandMaintenance Manual,"LubricantViscosities"andOperationandMaintenanceManual,"Capacities (Refill)"forfurtherinformation.Cleantheoilfillercapandinstalltheoilfillercap.

10.Beforeyoustarttheengine,checktheoillevelonengineoillevelgauge(4).Theoillevel mustbebetweenthe"MAX"and"MIN"marks.

11.Starttheengine.Runtheenginefor2minutes.Inspectthemachineforleaks.Stopthe machine.

12.Waitfor10minutestoallowtheoiltodrainbackintothecrankcase.Checktheoillevel. Maintaintheoillevelbetweenthe"MAX"and"MIN"marksontheengineoillevelgauge.

13.Closetheenginehood.
