Runtheengineinordertowarmuptheoil.Stoptheenginebeforeyoudraintheoil.Whentheoil iswarmthewasteparticlesaresuspendedintheoil.Thewasteparticleswillberemovedwhenthe oilisdrained.
Astheoilcools,thewasteparticlessettletothebottomoftheoilpan.Thewasteparticleswillnot beremovediftheoilistoocool.
Thewasteparticlescanrecirculatethroughtheenginelubricationsystemiftherecommended procedureisnotfollowed.
1.Opentheenginecompartment.RefertotheOperationandMaintenanceManual,"Access DoorsandCovers".

2.Placeasuitablecontainerunderthedrainhose.Thedrainhoseislocatedbelowthefront frame.Openthedrainvalve.RefertotheOperationandMaintenanceManual,"General HazardInformation"forinformationthatpertainstocontainingfluidspillage.
3.Allowtheoiltocompletelydrain.
4.Closethedrainvalve.

5.Removefilterelement(2).
Note:Discardtheusedfilterelementaccordingtolocalregulations.
6.Cleanthefilterhousingbase.Alloftheoldfiltersealmustberemovedfromthefilter housingbase.
7.Applyathincoatofengineoiltothesealofthenewfilterelement.
8.Installthenewfilterbyhand.Whenthegasketcontactsthefilterbase,tightenthefilter elementforanadditional3/4turn.Thiswilltightenthefiltersufficiently.
Everynewoilfilterhasrotationindexmarksthatarespacedat90degreeincrements.Use therotationindexmarksasaguidefortighteningtheoilfilter.
9.Removeoilfillercap(1).Fillthecrankcasewithnewoil.SeeOperationandMaintenance Manual,"LubricantViscosities"andOperationandMaintenanceManual,"Capacities (Refill)"forfurtherinformation.Cleantheoilfillercapandinstalltheoilfillercap.
10.Beforeyoustarttheengine,checktheoillevelondipstick(3).Theoillevelmustbewithin theFULLRANGEonthedipstick.
11.Starttheengine.Runtheenginefortwominutes.Inspectthemachineforleaks.Stopthe machine.
12.Waitfortenminutesinordertoallowtheoiltodrainbackintothecrankcase.Checktheoil level.MaintaintheoillevelwithintheFULLRANGEonthedipstick.
13.Closetheenginecompartment.

ObtaintheSampleandtheAnalysis
Inadditiontoagoodpreventivemaintenanceprogram,CaterpillarrecommendsusingS路O路Soil analysisatregularscheduledintervalsinordertomonitortheconditionoftheengineandthe maintenancerequirementsoftheengine.
Eachoilsampleshouldbetakenwhentheoiliswarmandwhentheoiliswellmixed.Thesample shouldbetakenatthistimeinordertoensurethatthesampleisrepresentativeoftheoilinthe crankcase.

UsethefollowingmethodinordertoobtainanS路O路Ssample:
鈥sea1U-5718VacuumPumporuseanequivalentpumpthatisinsertedintothesump.
Toavoidcontaminationoftheoilsamples,thetoolsandthesuppliesthatareusedforobtainingoil samplesmustbeclean.
ConsultyourCaterpillardealerforcompleteinformationandassistanceinestablishinganS路O路S programforyourengine.

Ifyoufilltheenginetoofastwithoil,theoilmaysaturatetheenginebreather.Ifthebreatheris saturatedwithoil,oilwillblowoutofthebreatherhoseuntilthebreatherisfreeofoil.Addthe engineoilatarateof2L/min(0.5283USgpm).Thiswillhelppreventsaturatingthebreather withoil.

Note:RefertotheOperationandMaintenanceManual,"LubricantViscosities"and OperationandMaintenanceManual,"Capacities(Refill)"forthecorrectamountofoilthat isusedwhentheoilischanged.Thecorrectamountofoildeterminesthecorrectlevelofthe oilintheFULLrangeonthedipstick.
NOTICE
Donotoverfillthecrankcase.Theoillevelmustnotreachthetopof theFULLrangemarkorabovetheFULLrangemark.
3.MaintaintheoillevelonthedipstickbetweentheMINIMUMmarkandtheMAXIMUM mark.Addoiliftheoillevelistoolow.Iftheoilleveliscorrect,closetheengine compartment.
Note:OperatingyourenginewiththeoillevelabovetheFULLmarkintheFULLRange couldcausethecrankshafttodipintotheoil.Thiscouldresultinexcessivelyhighoperating temperatures.Thehighoperatingtemperaturescouldresultinreducedlubricating characteristicsoftheoil.Thiscouldcausedamagetothebearingsandlossofenginepower.
