Usetheservicehourmetertodetermineservicingintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily, weekly,monthly,etc.)canbeusedinsteadofservicehourmeterintervalsiftheyprovidemore convenientservicingschedulesandapproximatetheindicatedservicehourmeterreading. Recommendedserviceshouldalwaysbeperformedattheintervalthatoccursfirst.
Underextremelysevere,dustyorwetoperatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationthanis specifiedintheMaintenanceIntervalschartmightbenecessary.
Performserviceonitemsatmultiplesoftheoriginalrequirement.Forexample,atEvery500 ServiceHoursor6Months,alsoservicethoseitemslistedunderEvery250ServiceHoursor3 MonthsandEvery10ServiceHoursorDaily.

2.Checkthehydraulicoillevelinsightgauge(1).Whentheoiliscold,theoillevelshouldbeto themiddleofsightgauge(1).Whentheoilishot,theoillevelshouldfillsightgauge(1).
NOTE:RefertotheLubricantViscositiesandRefillCapacitiessectionfortheproperamountof oiltodeterminethecorrectpositionforyourapplication.
3.Removehydraulicoiltankcap(2).
4.Addoil.
5.Cleanandinstallhydraulicoiltankcap(2).
6.Closetheaccesscover.

3.Removethefilterbowlandusepressureairtocleanscreen.

6.Removethefillcapsandcleanthestrainers.

Walk-AroundInspection
InspectMachine
NOTICE
Accumulatedgreaseandoilonamachineisafirehazard.Removethis debriswithsteamcleaningorhighpressurewater,atleastevery1000 hoursoranytimeasignificantquantityofoilisspilledonthemachine.
NOTE:Inspectcarefullyforleaks.Ifleakingisobserved,locatethesourceandcorrecttheleak. Checkfluidlevelsmorefrequentlythantherecommendedperiodsifleakingissuspectedor observed.
Inspectandreplacelights,brokenbulbsandlenses.
Inspectandremoveanytrashbuild-uparoundtheengine.
Inspectandrepairanyenginecomponentleaks.

Inspectstepsandhandholdsforconditionandcleanliness.InspecttheRolloverProtective Structure(ROPS)(ifequipped)fordamage.IfrepairisnecessarycontactyourCaterpillardealer. TightenanylooseROPSbolts.Repairorcleanifnecessary.
Inspectthehydraulicsystemforleaks.Inspectthetank,hoses,tubes,plugs,jointsandfittings. Correctanyleaks.
NOTICE
Wheneverinspectionormaintenanceworkisperformedonthe hydraulicsystem,allhydraulichosesandfittingsmustbechecked. Replacedamagedhosesimmediately.
Checkallhoses,fittingsandcomponentsforleaks.
Ifthemachineisequippedwithlights,turnonthelightswitch.Observethelightsandreplaceany thatarenotworking.
Besurecoversandguardsarefirmlyinplace.Inspectfordamage.
Inspectoperator'sstationforcleanlinessandremovealltrash.
Inspectandrepairtheinstrumentpanelgauges,controls,andswitcheswhennecessary.
Inspecttherubberisolationblocks,betweenthevibratorydrumandthemachineframefor damage,crackingorsplitting.ContactyourCaterpillardealerforthecompleteisolationblock replacementprocedure.

Startthemachineanddepressthehornbutton.Ifthehorndoesnotsoundmakeanynecessary repairsbeforeoperating.

Inspectoilfilterindicator.Servicefiltersbeforetherecommendedserviceintervaliftheindicators arenotinacceptablerange.RefertotheEvery500ServiceHoursor6MonthsinthisMaintenance Sectionformoredetailedinformation.
SeatBelt InspectForWearOrDamage

Replacetheseatbeltafterthreeyearsofusage,regardlessofappearance.
Seatbeltandmountinghardwaremustbeinspectedforwearordamagebeforeoperatingthe machine.Replacethebeltormountinghardwareifwornordamaged.

2.TurnthekeyswitchtotheONposition.
3.Allindicatorlightsshouldcomeonexceptthedirectionindicatorwhichcomesonifthe directionindicatorswitchisintheONposition.
4.Makeanyneededrepairsbeforeoperating.
Back-UpAlarm
CheckOperation
Theback-upalarmislocatedattherearofthemachine.

Whilethemachineisrunningmovethepropelcontrollevertoreverse.Iftheback-upalarmdoes notsoundmakeanyneededrepairsbeforeoperating.

Thesoundlevelcanbeadjustedbymovingtheadjustmentonbackofalarmtomeetoperating requirements.Thealarmissetatthehighestsoundlevelwhenshippedfromthefactory.The settingshouldremainonhigh,unlessthejobsiterequiresalowerlevel.
RefertoMonitoringSystemsandOperatorStationFeaturesSectionformoredetailsonadjusting theback-upalarmsoundlevel.
NeutralStartSwitch
CheckOperation
Machinemaysuddenlylurchforwardiftheneutralstartswitchisout ofadjustment.Besureareaisclearofallpersonnelandequipment beforeperformingthistest.

1.Depressparkingbrakeknob(1).

2.Movepropelcontrollever(3)totheforwardposition.
3.Holdenginestartswitch(2)inthestartpositionwhileslowlymovingtheleverbacktoward neutral.Iftheengineattemptstostartbeforetheleverisinneutral,Theneutralstartswitch requiresadjustment.Donotoperatethemachineuntilrepairsaremade.
Scrapers
Inspect

1.Cleanthescrapersofdirtanddebris.
2.Adjustscraperstotouchthedrums.

1.Loosenboltsandremovedamagedscraper.
2.Installnewscraperandtightenbolts.
3.Adjustscrapertotouchthedrum.

YoumustreadandunderstandthewarningsandinstructionscontainedintheSafetysectionof thismanualbeforeperforminganyoperationormaintenanceprocedures.

Thecrankcasedrainislocatedinthecenterofthemachineontherightside.
1.Removethecrankcasedrainplug.Allowtheoiltodrain.Cleanandinstallthedrainplug.

2.Opentheengineaccesscover.

3.Removefilterelement(1).
4.Cleanthefilterhousingbase.Makesurealloftheoldfiltergasketisremoved.
5.Applyalightcoatofengineoiltothegasketofthenewfilter.
6.Installthenewfilterbyhand.Whenthegasketcontactsthefilterbase,tightenthefilterthreequartersofaturnmore.
7.Removedipstick(2).Fillthecrankcasewithnewoil.SeeLubricantViscositiesandRefill Capacities.
8.ChecktheconditionofthedipstickO-ringsealandreplaceifdamaged.Installdipstick(2).
9.Starttheengineandallowtheoiltowarm.Checkforleaks.Stoptheengine.
10.Waitfiveminutestoallowtheoiltodrainbackintothecrankcase.Removedipstick(2)and wipeclean.Reinsertdipstick(2),thenremoveitagaintoreadactualoillevel.Maintaintheoil levelbetweentheMINandMAXmarks.
NOTE:RefertotheLubricantViscositiesandRefillCapacitiessectionfortheproperamountof oiltodeterminethecorrectposition,betweenMINandMAXmarks,onthedipstickforyour application. 11.Installthedipstick.


2.Removeupperenginecover(1).
3.Removethecylinderheadcoverlocatedatthefrontoftheengine.
4.Cleantheventilator,cylinderheadsandcylinderswithabrushandpressureair.
5.Removelowerenginecover(2).
6.Cleantheoilcoolerwithpressureair.
7.Installcylinderheadcoverandtheupperenginecover(1)andlowerenginecover(2).
8.Closetheaccesscover.
CoolingFanBelt
Inspect

1.Opentheengineaccesscover.

2.Inspecttheconditionofthecoolingfanbeltandreplaceifnecessary. Thecoolingfanbelttensioniscontrolledbytheautomaticbelttensioner.Noadjustmentis necessary.
3.Closetheaccesscover.
