CoolingSystemSpecifications

CoolantInformation

Dieselengineoperatingtemperatureshaveincreasedtoimproveengineefficiency.Thismeans propercoolingsystemmaintenanceisespeciallyimportant.Overheating,overcooling,pitting, cavitationerosion,crackedheads,pistonseizures,andpluggedradiatorsareclassiccoolingsystem failures.Infact,coolantisasimportantasthequalityoffuelandlubricatingoil.

NOTICE

Caterpillarrecommendsthatthecoolantmixturecontainaminimum of30%CaterpillarAntifreeze,orequivalent.Liquidsupplemental coolantadditivemustbeadded,whennotusingCaterpillarAntifreeze, whichcontainstheproperadditive.

Neveraddcoolanttoanoverheatedengine,enginedamagecanresult. Allowtheenginetocoolfirst.

Allwateriscorrosiveatengineoperatingtemperature.Thecooling systemshouldbeprotectedwitha3%to6%concentrationofliquid supplementalcoolantadditiveatalltimes,regardlessofthe concentrationofantifreeze.

Excessivesupplementalcoolantadditivegreaterthanthe recommended6%,togetherwithconcentrationsofantifreezegreater than65%cancausedepositstoformandcanresultinradiatortube blockage,overheating,and/orwaterpumpsealdamage.

Donotuseliquidsupplementalcoolantadditiveorelementsor antifreezewithDowtherm209Full-Fillcoolant.Dowtherm209FullFillcoolantisnotcompatiblewithotherantifreezeandcoolant mixtures.

Dowtherm209full-fillcoolantwilllowerthewaterpumpcavitation temperatureandcoolantboilingpoint.Theseloweredtemperatures willcauseoverheatingatalowerambienttemperaturethanan ethyleneglycolandwatermix.IfDowthermisused,followthe

instructionsprovidedanduseonlytheinhibitorpackagerecommended bythesupplier.

Ifthemachineistobestoredin,orshippedto,anareawithfreezing temperatures,thecoolingsystemmustbeprotectedtothelowest expectedoutside(ambient)temperature.

Theenginecoolingsystemisnormallyprotectedto-28°C(-20°F)with CaterpillarAntifreeze,whenshippedfromthefactoryunlessspecial requirementsaredefined.

Checkthespecificgravityofthecoolantsolutionfrequentlyincoldweathertoensureadequate protection.

Cleanthecoolingsystemifitiscontaminated,iftheengineoverheatsoriffoamingisobservedin theradiator.

Coolantshouldbedrained,thesystemcleanedandnewcoolantaddedevery3000servicehoursor twoyears.WhennotusingCaterpillarAntifreezeandsupplementalcoolantadditiveas recommended,thedrainperiodmustbeshortenedto1500servicehoursoroneyear.

Fillingatover20liters(5U.S.gallons)perminutecancauseairpocketsinthecoolingsystem.

Afterdrainingandrefillingthecoolingsystem,operatetheenginewiththeradiatorcapremoved untilthecoolantreachesnormaloperatingtemperatureandthecoolantlevelstabilizes.Add coolantasnecessarytofillthesystemtotheproperlevel.

Neveroperatewithoutathermostatinthecoolingsystem.Coolingsystemproblemscanarise withoutathermostat.

Referto"KnowYourCoolingSystem,"formSEBD0518and"CoolantandYourEngine"form SEBD0970,formoredetailedspecifications.

CoolantWater

Hardwater,orwaterwithhighlevelsofcalciumandmagnesiumions,encouragestheformation ofinsolublechemicalcompoundsbycombiningwithcoolingsystemadditivessuchassilicates andphosphates.

Thetendencyofsilicatesandphosphatestoprecipitateout-of-solutionincreaseswithincreasing waterhardness.Hardwater,orwaterwithhighlevelsofcalciumandmagnesiumionsencourages theformationofinsolublechemicals,especiallyafteranumberofheatingandcoolingcycles.

Caterpillarpreferstheuseofdistilledwaterordeionizedwatertoreducethepotentialandseverity ofchemicalinsolubility.

Usingwaterthatmeetstheminimumacceptablewaterrequirementmaynotpreventdropoutof thesechemicalcompoundstotally,butshouldminimizetheratetoacceptablelevels.

Antifreeze NOTICE

Caterpillarrecommendsthatthecoolantmixcontainaminimumof 30%CaterpillarAntifreeze,orequivalentandacceptablewaterto maintainanadequatewaterpumpcavitationtemperatureforefficient waterpumpperformance.

Premixcoolantsolutiontoprovideprotectiontothelowestexpected outside(ambient)temperature.Pureundilutedantifreezewillfreezeat -23°C(-10°F).

Onlyuseagreaterconcentration(above30%)ofCaterpillar Antifreezeasneededforanticipatedoutside(ambient)temperatures. Donotexceedacoolantmixtureof60%antifreezetowatersincea concentrationabove60%antifreezewillreducetheengine'sfreeze protectionandincreasethepossibilityofdepositformationinthe coolingsystem.

UseCaterpillarAntifreezeorGMSpecification6038-MAntifreeze.CaterpillarAntifreezeis availablethroughyourCaterpillardealerinquantitiesthatfollow.

Mostcommercialantifreezesareformulatedforgasolineengineapplicationsandwill,therefore, havehighsilicatecontent.CaterpillarAntifreezeisformulatedwithalowsilicatecontentandthe propercoolantadditivesforheavydutydieselengines.

GMSpecification6038-Misalowsilicateantifreeze,butsupplementalcoolantadditivemustbe added.

ThemajoradvantagesofCaterpillarAntifreezeare:

*Significantlyreduceswaterpumpsealleakageproblemscausedbyoverconcentrationof chemicaladditives.

*Thereisnoneedtoaddsupplementalcoolantadditiveoninitialfillwhichmustbedone withcurrentcommerciallyavailableantifreezes.

*Highsilicateantifreezesusedwithasupplementalcoolantadditivecancauseabuild-upof solidsoveraperiodoftimewhichcancauseplugging,lossofheattransfer,andwaterpump sealdamage.

Makeproperantifreezeadditions.

Addingpureantifreezeasamakeupsolutionforcoolingsystemtop-upisanunacceptable practice.Itincreasestheconcentrationofantifreezeinthecoolingsystemwhichincreasesthe concentrationofdissolvedsolidsandundissolvedchemicalinhibitorsinthecoolingsystem.Add antifreezemixedwithwatertothesamefreezeprotectionasyourcoolingsystem.

UsethechartbelowtoassistindeterminingtheconcentrationofCaterpillarAntifreezetouse.

SupplementalCoolantAdditive

Supplementalcoolantadditiveisnecessarytopreventrust,scale,pittingand/orcorrosionof enginepartsthatcoolantcomesincontactwith.MostantifreezesolutionsDONOTcontain sufficientsupplementalcoolantadditive.

NOTICE

Alwaysaddsupplementalcoolantadditiveorequivalenttothecoolant, orinstallaCaterpillarsupplementalcoolantadditiveelement(if equipped).Neverusecoolantonly,exceptifCaterpillarAntifreezeis beingusedwhichcontainstheadditive.Inthiscase,nosupplemental coolantadditiveisneededoninitialfill,butisnecessaryona maintenancebasis.

Usesupplementalcoolantadditiveorasupplementalcoolantadditive element(ifequipped).Thiswillprovidea3%to6%concentrationin thecoolingsystemtohelppreventcorrosion.

Topreventoverinhibitingtheengine'scoolingsystem,neveruseboth theliquidsupplementalcoolantadditiveandthesupplementalcoolant additiveelement(ifequipped)atthesametime.Theuseofthese additivestogethercouldresultinexcessiveconcentrationthatwould exceedtheCaterpillarrecommendedmaximumof6%.

Excessiveconcentrationofanadditivecanformdepositsonthehigher temperaturesurfacesofthecoolingsystemandcreateabarrierthat reducestheengine'sheattransfercharacteristics.Reducedheat transfercouldcausecrackingofthecylinderheadandotherhigh temperaturecomponents.Excessiveconcentrationsofadditivecould alsoacceleratewaterpumpsealwear.

SupplementalcoolantadditiveisneededwhennotusingCaterpillar Antifreezeforpremixedcoolantsolution.

LiquidsupplementalcoolantadditivecanbepurchasedfromyourCaterpillardealer.Followthe instructionsonthecontainer.

NOTICE

DONOTaddsupplementalcoolantadditiveatinitialfillwhenusing CaterpillarAntifreeze.CaterpillarAntifreezecontainsthenecessary supplementalcoolantadditiveprecharge.Additionofsupplemental coolantadditivecouldresultinanoverconcentration.

OninitialfillofaneworreconditionedengineifCaterpillarAntifreezeisnotused,add1liter(1 quart)ofsupplementalcoolantadditive,orequivalent,foreach30liters(8U.S.gallons)sothat thecoolingsystemwillhavea3%to6%concentrationofsupplementalcoolantadditive.

Tomaintaina3%to6%concentrationofadditive,addliquidsupplementalcoolantadditiveor installamaintenancesupplementalcoolantadditiveelement(ifequipped),every250servicehours oroilchange,whicheveroccursfirst.Usethe8T5296SupplementalCoolantAdditiveTestKitto checkforconcentration.

Iftheengineisnotequippedwithspin-onelement,add.25liter(.53pint)ofsupplementalcoolant additiveforeach38liters(10U.S.gallons)ofcoolantcapacitytomaintainthe3%to6% concentrationofadditive.

CoolingSystemCleaning

CaterpillarCoolingSystemCleanersaredesignedtocleanthesystemofharmfulscaleand corrosion.Itdissolvesmineralscale,corrosionproducts,lightoilcontaminationandsludge.

Cleanthesystemaccordingtothemaintenanceintervalchart,orwheneverthecoolantisdirtyor foaming.

CoolingsystemcleanersareavailablefromyourCaterpillardealerinthequantitieslistedbelow. Followthelabeldirectionsforproperusage.

Walk-AroundInspection

InspectMachine

Foryourownsafetyandmaximumservicelifeofthemachine,makeathoroughwalk-around inspectionbeforemountingthemachinetostarttheengine.

Lookaroundandunderthemachineforsuchitemsaslooseormissingbolts,trashbuildup,oil, coolantorfuelleaks.Inspecttheconditionandinflationofthetiresandconditionoftheblade.

Removeanytrashanddebris.Adjusttireinflationasneeded.Haveanynecessaryrepairsmade, looseconnectionsandpartstightenedtotheirspecifiedtorquesandanymissingpartsreplaced beforestartingtheengineoroperatingthemachine.

Fordetailedinstructions,seethetopic,"Walk-AroundInspection"under"BeforeStartingthe Engine"intheoperationsectionofthisguide.

1.Measuretheoillevel.

2.Theoillevelcanbemeasuredwiththeenginestoppedortheenginerunningandtheoilwarm.

Withtheenginestopped,theoillevelshouldbeabovetheADDmarkontheENGINESTOPPED sideofthedipstick.

Withtheenginerunning,theoillevelshouldbebetweentheFULLandtheADDOILmarkonthe ENGINERUNNINGsideofthedipstick.

3.Addoil,ifnecessary,tobringtheoilleveltothespecifiedlevel.

CheckOilLevel

Atoperatingtemperature,thehydraulictankishotandunderpressure.

Hotoilcancauseburns.

Removethefillcaponlywhentheengineisstopped,andthecapiscool enoughtotouchwithyourbarehand.Removethefillcapslowlyto relievepressure.

1.Themachinemustbelevel,theoilwarmandtheenginerunningatlowidle.

HydraulicTank

2.LockthetransmissioncontrolleverinNEUTRAL.Applytheparkingbrake.Lowerthedozer bladewithslightdownpressure.

3.Observetheoillevelinthehydraulictanksightgauge.MaintaintheoillevelbetweentheADD andtheFULLmarkinthesightgauge.

AirReservoir

DrainMoistureandSediment

Openthedrainvalve.Allowallcondensationtodrain.Closethedrainvalve.Ifthemachineis equippedwithanairdryer,thismaintenancecanbedoneevery50servicehoursoronceaweek.

3.Inspecttheradiatorcapgasketandreplaceitifitisdamaged.Installtheradiatorcap.

Transmission

MeasureOilLevel

Hotoilandcomponentscancausepersonalinjury.Donotallowhotoil orcomponentstocontactskin.

Themachinemustbeparkedonlevelgroundandtheenginerunningatlowidle.Theoilmustbe warm.

1.LockthetransmissioncontrolleverinNEUTRAL.

2.Lowerthedozerbladewithslightdownpressure.Applytheparkingbrake.

Measuretheoillevel.

3.MaintaintheoillevelbetweentheFULLandADDOILmarksonthedipstick.

IndicatorsandGauges

TestforProperFunction

Donotoperatethemachine,ifanyoftheindicatorsorgaugesdonot register.Haveanynecessaryrepairsmadebeforereturningthe machinetooperation.

Inspectallindicatorsandgaugesforcorrectfunction.

1.Openthedrainvalve. 2.Allowallwaterandsedimenttodrainthroughthedrainportintheframe.

Closethedrainvalve.

1.Disconnectthesteeringframelocklink.Starttheengine.

2.Turnthemachinefullrightorleft.

3.Lowerthedozerblade,applytheparking/secondarybrakeandstoptheengine.

4.Lubricateonefitting.

Straightenthemachineandconnectthesteeringframelocklinkafter servicingthemaindriveshaftspline.

1.Lubricatethefrontbearingthroughthefittingintheblockinfrontoftherearcase.

2.Lubricatetherearbearingthroughthefittinginthecenterofthedriveshaft.

FrameUpperandLowerPivotBearings

LubricateFittings

1.Lubricateonefittingattheupperpivotpin.

2.Lubricateonefittingatthelowerpivotpin.

HitchOscillationBearing

LubricateFittings

Lubricatefrontandrearbearing.Lubricateonefittingontopofrearcase.

Lubricateonefittinglocatedonthefrontrightsideofoscillationhitcharea.

LubricateFittings

1.Lubricateonefittinginthefrontspline,throughtheaccessholeinthefrontfloorplate.

2.Lubricateonefittinginthecenterspline,locatedinthepivotarea.

3.Lubricateonefittingintherearspline,throughtheaccessholeintheshaftcoverplate.

SteeringCylinderBearings

LubricateFittings

1.Lubricateonefittingattherodendofeachcylinder.

2.Lubricateonefittingattheheadendofeachcylinder.Totaloffourfittings.

Batteries

Clean-CheckElectrolyteLevel

Batteriesgiveoffflammablefumesthatcanexplode.

Donotsmokewhenobservingthebatteryelectrolytelevels.

Electrolyteisanacidandcancausepersonalinjuryifitcontactsskinor eyes.

Alwayswearprotectiveglasseswhenworkingwithbatteries.

1.Removerightandleftsideengineguards.

2.Cleanthetopandallpostsofthebatteries.Coatallpostswithpetroleumjelly.

Accordingtoyourbatterytype,checktheelectrolytelevelusingthechartbelow.

Tightenthebatteryretainersevery1000hoursonallbatteries.

Attheproperchargingrate,inamoderateclimate,abatteryshouldnotrequiremorethan30cc(1 ounce)ofwaterpercellperweek.Checkthecellsweeklyinextremetemperatures,cellwater usagecouldbehigher.

3.Inspecttheelectrolytelevelineachbatterycell.Maintaintheleveltothebottomofthefill openingswithdistilledwater.Ifdistilledwaterisnotavailable,usecleandrinkingwater.

Hotoilandcomponentscancausepersonalinjury.Donotallowhotoil orcomponentstocontactskin.

1.Openthecrankcasedrainvalve.Allowtheoiltodrain.Closethedrainvalve.

2.Removethefilterelementwithastrap-typewrench.

3.Cleanthefilterhousingbase.Makesurealloftheoldfiltergasketisremoved.

4.Applyalightcoatofengineoiltothegasketofthenewfilter.

5.Installthenewfilterbyhand.Whenthegasketcontactsthefilterbase,tightenthefilter1/2turn more.

6.Fillthecrankcasewithnewoil.Seethe"RefillCapacities"chart.

7.Starttheengineandallowtheoiltowarm.Checkforleaks.

8.MeasuretheoilwiththedipsticktomakesuretheoiladdedisbetweentheADDandFULL marks.

CoolingSystem

AddCoolantConditioner

Atoperatingtemperature,theenginecoolantishotandunderpressure. Steamcancausepersonalinjury.

Checkthecoolantlevelonlyaftertheenginehasbeenstoppedandthe fillcapiscoolenoughtotouchwithyourbarehand.

Removethefillcapslowlytorelievepressure.

Coolingsystemconditionercontainsalkali.Avoidcontactwiththeskin andeyestopreventpersonalinjury.

NOTICE

Allwateriscorrosiveatengineoperatingtemperature.UseCaterpillar coolantconditionertotreattheethyleneglycolcoolantsolution.

DonotuseCaterpillarcoolingsystemconditionerwithDowtherm209 Full-Fillcoolant.Followtherecommendationsprovidedwith Dowtherm209Full-Fillcoolant.

Donotaddliquidcoolingsystemconditionermonthlyunlessthe machinehasactuallyoperated250servicehours.Addingcooling systemconditionerbefore250servicehourswillgiveanexcessive concentrationofconditioner.

Excessivecoolantconditioner(greaterthantherecommended6% initialfill)togetherwithconcentrationsofantifreezegreaterthan65%

causeadeposittoformandmayresultinradiatortubeblockageand overheating.

Ifthecoolingsystemwasdrainedandrefilled,seethetopic"CoolingSystem"under"Every2000 ServiceHoursor1Year."

Itmaybenecessarytodrainenoughcoolanttoallowfortheadditionofcoolingsystem conditioner.

Add1/2liter(1pint)ofCaterpillarcoolingsystemconditioner,orequivalent,tothiscooling system.Thiswillmaintaintherequired3%concentrationofconditioner.

Make-upcoolantshouldcontaina3%concentrationofconditioner-1literofconditionerper33 litersofwater(1pintper4gallons).

1.Loosentheradiatorcapslowlytorelieveanypressure.Removetheradiatorcap.

2.Add1/2liter(1pint)ofcoolingsystemconditioner.

3.Inspecttheradiatorcapgasketandreplaceit,ifitisdamaged.

4.Installtheradiatorcap. FanBearing

Inspect/Adjust-Replace

Inspecttheconditionandtheadjustmentofbelts.Replacethebeltsinsetsonly,ifoneormoreare wornordamaged.

1.Inspecttheconditionandtheadjustmentofalternatorbelts.Thebeltsshoulddeflect14to20 mm(9/16to13/16inch)under110N(25lb)force.

2.Loosenalternatorbracketandmountingbolts.Movethealternatorinoroutasnecessary.

3.Tightenthealternatorbracketandmountingbolts.Checkthebelt'sdeflection.Readjustif necessaryuntilthecorrectdeflectionisattained.

BrakeFluidReservoirs

CheckFluidLevel

1.Locatedintheleftrearcorneroftheoperator'scompartment.

2.Removethecoversfromthefront(1)andrear(2)brakemastercylinderreservoirs.Inspectthe brakefluidlevel.Thelevelmustbewithin1cm(1/2inch)ofthetopofthereservoirs.Addbrake fluid,ifnecessary.

3.Cleanandinstallthecovers.

4.Testthebrakes.Seethenexttwotopicsonbraketesting.

5.Iftheredlightonthedashcomesonoriftheredindicatoronthemastercylindershowsafter thebrakefluidreservoirshavebeeninspectedandfilled.Inspectthebrakepadsforwearandthe systemforleaks.Makeanynecessaryrepairs,beforethemachineisreturnedtowork. ServiceBrakes

TestHoldingAbility

Besuretheareaaroundmachineisclearofpersonnelandobstructions.

Besurethesteeringframelocklinkisinstoredposition.

Testthebrakesonadry,levelsurface.

Fastentheseatbeltbeforetestingthebrakes.

Thefollowingtestsaretodetermineiftheservicebrakeisfunctional.Thesetestsarenotintended tomeasuremaximumbrakeholdingeffort.Brakeholdingeffortrequiredtoholdamachineata specificenginerpmwillvaryfrommachinetomachineduetodifferencesinenginesetting,power trainefficiency,etc.,aswellasdifferencesinbrakeholdingability.

Enginerpmatbeginningofmachinemovement,withservicebrakeapplied,shouldbecompared againsttheenginerpmyourspecificmachinewasabletoholdonapriortest,asanindicationof systemdeterioration.

1.Starttheengine,andraisethedozerbladeslightly.Applytheservicebrakeandreleasethe parking/secondarybrake.

2.Withtheservicebrakeapplied.Movethetransmissionto2ndspeedforward.

3.Graduallyincreasetheenginespeedtohighidle.Themachineshouldnotmove.
