Safety

Operation

MaintenanceIntervals

Usetheservicehourmetertodetermineservicingintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily,weekly, monthly,etc.)canbeusedinsteadofservicehourmeterintervalsiftheyprovidemoreconvenient servicingschedulesandapproximatetheindicatedservicehourmeterreading.Recommendedservice shouldalwaysbeperformedattheintervalthatoccursfirst.

Underextremelysevere,dustyorwetoperatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationthanisspecified intheMaintenanceIntervalschartmightbenecessary.

Performserviceonitemsatmultiplesoftheoriginalrequirement.Forexample,atEvery500Service Hoursor3Months,alsoservicethoseitemslistedunderEvery250ServiceHoursorMonthlyand Every10ServiceHoursorDaily.

Thismachineisequippedwitha3408dieselengine.Ithasafour-speedforwardthree-speedreverse transmissionandisdesignedprimarilyformovingmaterial.

YoumustreadandunderstandthewarningsandinstructionscontainedintheSafetysectionofthis manualbeforeperforminganyoperationormaintenanceprocedures.

CoolingSystemCoolant

ChangeCoolant/CleanSystem/ReplaceThermostat NOTICE

Donotchangethecoolantuntilyoureadandunderstandthematerial intheCoolingSystemSpecificationssection.

Drainthecoolantearlierwheneverthecoolantisdirtyorfoamingisobserved.

Replacingyourthermostatpriortofailureisagoodpreventivemaintenancepracticebecauseit reducesyourchancesforunscheduleddowntime.Failuretoreplaceyourthermostatonaregularly scheduledbasiscouldcausesevereenginedamageandcostyoumoney.

NOTE:IfreplacingthermostatONLY,drainthecoolantfromthecoolingsystemtoalevelbelowthe thermostathousing.

SinceCaterpillarenginesincorporateashuntdesigncoolingsystem,itismandatorytoalwaysoperate theenginewithathermostat.

NOTE:Thethermostatscanbereusediftheyaretestedandmeetthetestspecificationsandarenot damagedorhaveexcessivebuildupofdeposits.

1.Stoptheengineandallowtocool.

2.Removetheradiatorcapslowlytorelievepressureandopenthedrainvalveandallowthecoolant todrain.Drainvalveislocatedundertheradiator.

3.Removethebolts(1)thatfastenthethermostathousing(2)tothecylinderheadandremovethe thermostathousingandgaskets.

4.Removethethermostatandthesealfromthehousing.

5.Installthesealgasketandthermostattothehousing.

6.Installthehousingtothecylinderhead.

7.Closethedrainvalve.Fillthesystemwithcleanwateranda6to10%concentrationofcooling systemcleaner.

8.Startandruntheenginefor90minutes.Stoptheengineanddrainthecleaningsolution.

9.Flushthesystemwithwater,withtheenginestopped,untilthedrainingwaterisclear.

10.Closethedrainvalve.

11.Addthecoolantsolution.SeeCoolingSystemSpecificationsandLubricantViscositiesandRefill Capacities.

NOTE:Donotaddsupplementalcoolantadditiveorchangeelementatthistime,unlessyouarenot usingCaterpillarAntifreezewhichcontainsadditive.

12.Starttheengineandoperateitwiththeradiatorcapoff,untilthethermostatopensandthelevel stabilizes.

13.Maintainthecoolantleveltowithin13mm(.5in)ofthebottomofthefillpipe.

14.Installthecap.

15.Stoptheengine.

CleantheCoolingSystemReliefValve

Cleanorreplacethereliefvalveifthesystemoverheatsorlossofcoolantisobserved.

1.Removeradiatorcap(1)slowlytorelievepressure.

2.Removebolts(2)fromthevalveandremovethevalveassembly.

3.Inspectvalve(5),valveseals(4)andgasket(3).Replaceifnecessary.

4.Inspectvalvecover(6)andmountingbolts(2).

5.Installthereliefvalveassembly.

6.Checkthecoolantlevel.Maintainthecoolantleveltowithin13mm(.5in)ofthebottomofthefill pipe.

7.Installtheradiatorcap.

Compressedairispreferred,buthighpressurewaterorsteamcanbeusedtoremovedust,leavesand generaldebrisfromradiatorfins.

YoumustreadandunderstandthewarningsandinstructionscontainedintheSafetysectionofthis manualbeforeperforminganyoperationormaintenanceprocedures.

HydraulicTank

ChangetheOil

Operatethemachinelongenoughtowarmtheoil.

Themachineshouldbelevel.Allattachmentsshouldbeloweredtothegroundwithaslightdown pressure.Theparkingbrakeshouldbeengaged,andtheenginestopped.

1.Opentheaccesscover.
2.Removethehydraulicsystemoiltankfillcap.

3.Removethedrainplug,locatedinthebottomofthehydraulictank.

4.Installa1inchNPTpipenipple,100mm(4in)long,toopentheinternaldrainvalveanddrainthe oil.

5.Removethepipenippleandinstallthedrainplug.

6.Changethehydraulicsystemfilters.SeeHydraulicSystemintheEvery500ServiceHoursor3 Monthssection.

7.Removethefillscreen.Cleanandinstallfillscreen.

8.Fillthehydraulicsystemoiltank.SeeLubricantViscositiesandRefillCapacities.

9.Inspectthefillcapgasket.Replacethegasketifdamaged.

10.Installtheoilfillcap.

11.Startandruntheengineforafewminutes.

12.MaintaintheoillevelabovetheADDCOLDmarkinthesightgauge(1).Addoilthroughthefill tube(2),ifnecessary.

NOTE:Theoilmustbefreeofbubbles.Ifbubblesarepresentintheoil,airisenteringthehydraulic system.Inspectthesuctionlinehosesandclamps.

13.Stoptheengine.

14.Ifnecessary,tightenanylooseclampsandconnections.Replaceanydamagedhoses. DifferentialsandFinalDrives

ChangetheOil

1.Positioneachfrontwheelwiththedrainplugdown.Removetheplugsandallowtheoiltodrain.

2.Removethefrontdifferentialdrainplugandallowtheoiltodrain.

3.Cleanandinstallthedifferentialandfinaldrivedrainplugs.

4.Removethefrontdifferentialfillplug.

5.Fillthefrontdifferentialtothebottomofthefillopenings.SeetheLubricantViscositiesandRefill Capacities.Cleanandinstallthefillplug.

6.Positionthefrontwheelssothefillplugsareevenwiththecenterlineofthewheel.Removethefill plugs.

7.Fillbothfrontfinaldrivesslowlytothebottomofthefillopenings.SeetheLubricantViscosities andRefillCapacities. Rear

1.Positioneachrearwheelwiththedrainplugdown.Removetheplugsandallowtheoiltodrain.

2.Removethereardifferentialdrainplugandallowtheoiltodrain.

3.Cleanandinstallthedifferentialandfinaldrivedrainplugs.

4.Removethedifferentialfillplug.

5.Positiontherearwheelssothefillplugsareevenwiththecenterlineofthewheel.Removethefill plugs.

6.Fillbothrearfinaldrivesslowlytothebottomofthefillopenings.SeetheLubricantViscosities andRefillCapacities.

BucketPivotPins

LubricatetheLowerPins

Wipeallfittingsbeforelubricating.

1.Removetheaccessplugsfromtheinnerandoutercollets.

2.Removetheoilplugsfromtheendsofthepin.

3.Installaspecialfitting(7K6627)intheouterendofthepin.

NOTICE

Useanewgreasegunorthoroughlywashagreasegunandnozzlein clean,nonflammablesolvent.

Thoroughlydrythegreasegunandnozzle.Makesurenogrease remainsinthegunorthenozzle.

4.Pumptheoilintothepinthroughthespecialfittingandallowtheexcessoiltocomeouttheother endofthepin.Flushthepinthoroughlywithoil.

5.Wipeexcessoilfromtheendofthepin.Installacleanoilpluginthepin.

6.Installacleanaccessplugintheinnercollet.

7.Removethespecialfittingfromthepin.Installacleanpluginthepin.

8.Installacleanaccessplugintheoutercollet.

9.Lubricatetheremainingbucketpivotpins.

10.Totaloffourbucketpivotpins.

EngineValveLash

Adjust

Topreventpossibleinjury,donotusethestartermotortoturnthe flywheel.

Hotenginecomponentscancauseburns.Allowadditionaltimeforthe enginetocoolbeforemeasuringvalveclearance.

NOTICE

Measurethevalvelashwiththeenginestopped.Toobtainanaccurate measurement,allowatleast20minutesforthevalvestocooltoengine cylinderheadandblocktemperature.

Adjustthevalveclearancetowithin±0.08mm(.003in)ofthevalveclearancesettinggiveninthe chart.

RefertotheServiceManualoryourCaterpillardealerforthecompletevalveadjustmentprocedure.

EngineValveRotators

Check

Wheninspectingthevalverotators,protectiveglassesorfaceshieldand protectiveclothingmustbeworn,topreventbeingburnedbyhotoil spray.

1.StarttheengineandrunatLowIdle.

2.Watchthetopsurfaceoneachvalverotator.Eachvalverotatorshouldturnslightlyeachtimethe valvecloses.

Ifavalvefailstorotate,contactyourCaterpillardealer.

BrakeAccumulator

CheckPressure

ContactyourCaterpillardealertohavethebrakeaccumulatorprechargepressurechecked.

Useonlydrynitrogengasforrecharge.

1.Removethetransmissiondrainpluganddraintheoil.

2.Changethefilterelement.SeethetopicTransmissionOilFilterunderEvery500ServiceHoursor 3Months.

3.Removethemagneticstrainercover.

4.Removethemagnetsfromthehousing.

5.Removethescreenfromthehousing.

6.Washthetubeandthescreeninaclean,nonflammablesolvent.

7.Cleanthemagnetswithacloth,astiffbristlebrushorpressureair.

NOTICE

Donotdroporrapthemagnetsagainstanyhardobjects.Replaceany damagedmagnets.

8.Cleanthecoverandinspecttheseal.Replacetheseal,ifitisdamaged.

9.Insertthemagnetsinthescreen.

10.Insertthescreen,tubeandmagnetsinthehousing.

11.Installthecover.Tightenthecoverbolts.

12.Cleanandinstallthetransmissiondrainplug.

13.Opentheaccesscover.

14.Fillthetransmissionwithoilthroughthefilltube.SeetheLubricantViscositiesandRefill Capacitieschart.

15.Removethetransmissionbreather.Washthebreatherinclean,nonflammablesolvent.Installthe transmissionbreather.

16.Removethetransfergearhousingbreather.Washthebreatherinclean,nonflammablesolvent. Installthetransfergearhousingbreather.

17.Closetheaccesscover.

18.Startandruntheengineatlowidle.Inspectforleaks.

19.SlowlyoperatetheSTICtransmissioncontrolstocirculatetheoil.
