CoolantInformation

Thisalsomeanspropercoolingsystem maintenanceisespeciallyimportant.

Propercoolantiscritical,asisthequalityoffuelandlubricatingoil.Maintenancepracticesmay needtobere-evaluatedtoproperlymaintaintheengine'scoolingsystem.Itisimportantthat thissectionbereadcarefully.

NOTICE

Neveroperatewithoutathermostatinthecoolingsystem.The thermostatsmaintaintheenginecoolantattheproper operatingtemperature.

Neveraddcoolantorwatertoanoverheatedengine,engine damagecanresult.Allowtheenginetocoolfirst.Fillingatover 5U.S.gallon(20L)perminutecancauseairpocketsinthe coolingsystem.

Caterpillardoesnotrecommendtheuseofcoolingsystem solutionsthatareintendedtostopleaks.Useoftheseproducts mayresultinenginedamage.

Caterpillarrecommendsthatthecoolantmixturecontaina minimumof30%CaterpillarAntifreeze,orequivalent.

Thecoolingsystemshouldbeprotectedwithaminimumof3% concentrationofliquidsupplementalcoolantadditiveatall times,regardlessoftheconcentrationofantifreeze.

Iftheengineistobestoredin,orshippedto,anareawith freezingtemperatures,thecoolingsystemmustbeprotectedto thelowestexpectedoutside(ambient)temperature.

CoolantMixtureforCaterpillarEngines

Allwateriscorrosiveatengineoperatingtemperature.Distilledordeionizedwateris recommendedbecauseoflessmineraldropoutthanhardortapwater.Tapwater,even artificiallysoftenedwithsalt,isnotrecommendedforuseinyourengine'scoolingsystem.

NOTICE

Caterpillarrecommendsthatthecoolantmixturecontaina minimumof30%CaterpillarAntifreeze(orequivalent)with70% distilledordeionizedwatertomaintainanadequatecavitation temperatureforefficientwaterpumpperformance.Antifreeze concentrationshouldbeselectedtoprovideprotectiontothe lowestexpectedoutside(ambient)temperature.

Checkthespecificgravityoftheantifreezesolutionfrequently incoldweathertoensureadequatefreezeprotection.Premix coolantsolutiontoprovideprotectiontothelowestexpected outside(ambient)temperature.Pureundilutedantifreezewill freezeat-10°F(-23°C).

Antifreezeconcentrationsabove60%antifreezeto40%water areNOTrecommendedbecausethehigherconcentrationslimit theabilityofthecoolantmixturetoabsorbsupplemental coolantadditive.

Mostcommercialantifreezesare formulatedforgasolineengineapplicationsandhavehighsilicatecontent.

Addingpureundilutedantifreezeasamakeupsolutionforcoolingsystemtop-offisan unacceptablepractice.

NOTICE

Ifpropyleneglycolbasedantifreezeisused,DONOTallow concentrationgreaterthana50/50antifreezetowatermixture. Themeasurementoffreezeprotectionmustbemadewitha refractive-typetester(5P0957or5P3514)ratherthanthe hydrometer-typetestercommerciallyavailable.Thehydrometer -typetestercanbeusedtotestethyleneglycolbased antifreeze.

SupplementalCoolantAdditive(ConditionerorInhibitor)

NOTICE

Neveruseantifreeze/watercoolantonly,inCaterpillarengines withoutsupplementalcoolantadditiveregardlessofantifreeze concentration.

Caterpillarorothermanufacturer'sproductscanbeusedasthe supplementalcoolantadditive.DonotmixCaterpillar SupplementalCoolantAdditive(Conditioner)liquidorelements withtheothercommercialproductsavailable;selectacooling systemtreatmentanduseitexclusively.

NOTE:

Excessiveconcentrationofsupplementalcoolantadditivecan formdepositswhichmaycauseenginedamage,reducethe engine'sheattransfercharacteristicsandcouldalsoaccelerate waterpumpsealwear.
