Theoperationsectionisareferenceforthenewoperatorandarefresherfortheexperiencedoperator. Thissectionincludesadiscussionofgauges,switches,machinecontrols,attachmentcontrols, transportationandtowinginformation.

Photographsandillustrationsguidetheoperatorthroughcorrectproceduresofchecking,starting, operatingandstoppingthemachine.

Operatingtechniquesoutlinedinthispublicationarebasic.Skillandtechniquesdevelopasthe operatorgainsknowledgeofthemachineanditscapabilities.

Maintenance

Themaintenancesectionisaguidetoequipmentcare.TheMaintenanceIntervalSchedule(MIS)lists theitemstobemaintainedataspecificserviceinterval.Itemswithoutspecificintervalsarelisted underthe"WhenRequired"serviceinterval.TheMaintenanceIntervalScheduleliststhepage numberforthestep-by-stepinstructionsrequiredtoaccomplishthescheduledmaintenance.Usethe MaintenanceIntervalScheduleasanindexor"onesafesource"forallmaintenanceprocedures.

MaintenanceIntervals

Usetheservicehourmetertodetermineservicingintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily,weekly, monthly,etc.)canbeusedinsteadofservicehourmeterintervalsiftheyprovidemoreconvenient servicingschedulesandapproximatetheindicatedservicehourmeterreading.Recommendedservice shouldalwaysbeperformedattheintervalthatoccursfirst.

Underextremelysevere,dustyorwetoperatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationthanisspecified inthemaintenanceintervalschartmightbenecessary.

Performserviceonitemsatmultiplesoftheoriginalrequirement.Forexample,atevery500service hoursor3months,alsoservicethoseitemslistedunderevery250servicehoursormonthlyandevery 10servicehoursordaily.

CaliforniaProposition65Warning

DieselengineexhaustandsomeofitsconstituentsareknowntotheStateofCaliforniatocause cancer,birthdefects,andotherreproductiveharm.

Batteryposts,terminalsandrelatedaccessoriescontainleadandleadcompounds.Washhandsafter handling.

CertifiedEngineMaintenance

Propermaintenanceandrepairisessentialtokeeptheengineandmachinesystemsoperating correctly.Astheheavydutyoff-roaddieselengineowner,youareresponsiblefortheperformanceof therequiredmaintenancelistedintheOwnerManual,OperationandMaintenanceManual,and ServiceManual.

Itisprohibitedforanypersonengagedinthebusinessofrepairing,servicing,selling,leasing,or tradingenginesormachinestoremove,alter,orrenderinoperativeanyemissionrelateddeviceor elementofdesigninstalledonorinanengineormachinethatisincompliancewiththeregulations (40CFRPart89).Certainelementsofthemachineandenginesuchastheexhaustsystem,fuel system,electricalsystem,intakeairsystemandcoolingsystemmaybeemissionrelatedandshould notbealteredunlessapprovedbyCaterpillar.

MachineCapacity

Additionalattachmentsormodificationsmayexceedmachinedesigncapacitywhichcanadversely affectperformancecharacteristics.Includedwouldbestabilityandsystemcertificationssuchas brakes,steering,androlloverprotectivestructures(ROPS).ContactyourCatdealerforfurther information.

CatProductIdentificationNumber

EffectiveFirstQuarter2001theCatProductIdentificationNumber(PIN)haschangedfrom8to17 characters.Inanefforttoprovideuniformequipmentidentification,Caterpillarandotherconstruction equipmentmanufacturersaremovingtocomplywiththelatestversionoftheproductidentification numberingstandard.Non-roadmachinePINsaredefinedbyISO10261.ThenewPINformatwill applytoallCatmachinesandgeneratorsets.ThePINplatesandframemarkingwilldisplaythe17 characterPIN.Thenewformatwilllooklikethefollowing:

3.CheckCharacter(character9)

4.MachineIndicatorSection(MIS)orProductSequenceNumber(characters10-17).Thesewere previouslyreferredtoastheSerialNumber.

MachinesandgeneratorsetsproducedbeforeFirstQuarter2001willmaintaintheir8characterPIN format.

Componentssuchasengines,transmissions,axles,etc.andworktoolswillcontinuetousean8 characterSerialNumber(S/N).

6.Tocheckthesystemforrefrigerant,feelthesuctionline(1)andthedischargeline(2).

Ifthesystemcontainsrefrigerant,thedischargelinewillbewarmerthanthesuctionline. Ifthesystemdoesnotcontainrefrigerantorthesystemisverylowonrefrigerant,poorcooling willresult.

7.Closethereardoorfortheengine.

NOTICE

Donotcleanthefilterelementsbybumpingortappingthem.Donot usefilterelementswithdamagedpleats,gasketsorseals.Engine damagecanresult.

Makesurethecleanedfilterelementsarecompletelydrybefore installingintothefilterhousing.Waterremainingintheelementscan causefalseindicationsofcontaminationinScheduledOilSamplingtest results.

Thefilterelementscanbecleanedbyusingthefollowingmethods:

•pressureair

•pressurewater

•detergentwashing

Whenyouusepressureair,themaximumairpressureis205kPa(30psi).Whenyouusepressure water,themaximumwaterpressureis280kPa(40psi).

1.Whenyoucleantheinsidepleatsandtheoutsidepleats,directtheairalongthepleatsordirect thewateralongthepleats.

Theelementcanbewashedinasolutionthatconsistsofwarmwaterandofnonsudsing householddetergent.Fullyrinsethepleats.Allowthefiltertoairdrycompletely.

2.Inspectthefilterelementsafteryoucleanthefilterelements.Donotuseafilterifthepleats,the gasketsorthesealsaredamaged.

3.Coverthecleanfilterelements.Storetheelementsinaclean,drylocation.

Replacetheprimaryelementaftertheprimaryelementhasbeencleanedsixtimes.Alsoreplace theprimaryelementiftheprimaryelementhasbeeninserviceforoneyear.

Thebackupalarmshouldimmediatelysound.Thebackupalarmwillcontinuetosounduntilthe directioncontrolleverismovedtotheNEUTRALpositionortotheFORWARDposition.

Athree-positionswitchattherearofthebackupalarmregulatestheintensityofsound.

Thealarmissetatthehighestsoundlevelwhenthemachineisshippedfromthefactory.Thesetting shouldremainonhigh,unlessthejobsiterequiresalowerintensityofsound.

3.Closetheaccessdoor.

Abatteryshouldnotrequiremorethan30cc(1oz)ofwaterpercellperweek.Thisshouldexistwith theproperchargingrateandwithamoderateclimate.

Inextremetemperatures,checkthewaterinthecellsweekly.

1.Opentheaccessdoors.

2.Cleanthebatterysurfacewithacleancloth.Keeptheterminalscleanandkeeptheterminals coatedwithpetroleumjelly.Installthepostcoverafteryoucoatthepostwithpetroleumjelly.

3.Inspecttheelectrolytelevelineachbatterycell.Amaintenancefreebatterydoesnotrequire inspection.Maintaintheelectrolyteleveltothebottomofthefilleropenings.Usedistilled water.Ifdistilledwaterisnotavailable,usecleandrinkingwater.

4.Closetheaccessdoors.

Note:Ifthemachineisnotequippedwithabatterydisconnectswitch,disconnectthenegative batterycablefromtheframe.Then,continuewithstep5.

NOTICE

Donotallowthedisconnectedbatterycabletocontactthedisconnect switch.

4.Atthebatterydisconnectswitch,disconnectthenegativebatterycablethatisconnectedtothe frame.

5.Disconnectthenegativebatterycableatthebattery.

Note:Inordertoreplacethebatteries,theaccessdoorsmustberemoved.

6.Performthenecessaryrepairs.Replacethecableorthebatteries,asneeded.

7.Connectthenegativebatterycableatthebattery.

8.Connectthebatterycableatthebatterydisconnectswitch,ifequipped.Ifthemachineisnot equippedwithabatterydisconnectswitch,connectthenegativecabletotheframe.

9.Installthebatterydisconnectswitchkey.Turnthebatterydisconnectswitch(ifequipped)to ON.

Ifthethicknessofthebrakediscsis4.94mm(0.195inch)orless,replacethebrakediscs.Ifthe thicknessoftheoilgroovesis0.81mm(0.032inch)orless,changethebrakediscs.

RefertoDisassemblyandAssembly,RENR3556,"BrakeandPlanetary-Disassemble".

Checktheareaaroundthemachine.Makesurethatthemachineisclearofpersonnelandclearof obstacles.

Testthebrakesonadry,levelsurface.

Fastentheseatbeltbeforeyoutestthebrakes.

Thefollowingtestsareusedtodetermineiftheservicebrakeisfunctional.Thesetestsarenot intendedtomeasurethemaximumbrakeholdingeffort.Thebrakeholdingeffortthatisrequiredto sustainamachineataspecificenginerpmvariesdependingonthemachine.Thevariationsarethe differencesintheenginesetting,inthepowertrainefficiency,andinthebrakeholdingability,etc.

Note:Inordertoperformthistest,theinchingvalvewillneedtobeneutralized.

Themastercylinderislocatedunderthecabontheleftsideofthemachine.Rod(1)connectsthe inchingvalvetothemastercylinderfortheservicebrakes.

1.Disconnectrod(1)fromlever(2).

Note:Lever(2)mustbefullyforwardinordertopreventtheinchingvalvefromactuating duringtheremainderofthetestprocedure.

2.Starttheengine.Raisethebucketslightly.

3.Applytheservicebrake.Releasetheparkingbrake.

4.MovethedirectioncontrollevertoFORWARD.

5.GraduallyincreasetheenginespeedtothemiddleRPMrange.Themachineshouldnotmove.

Ifthemachinebeginstomove,reducetheenginespeedimmediatelyand engagetheparkingbrake.

6.Reducetheenginespeedtolowidle.MovethedirectioncontrollevertoNEUTRAL.Engage theparkingbrake.Lowerthebuckettotheground.Stoptheengine.
