Safety

Thereareseveralspecificsafetysignsonyourmachine.Theirexactlocationanddescriptionofthe hazardarereviewedinthissection.Pleasetakethetimetofamiliarizeyourselfwiththesesafetysigns.

Makesurethatyoucanreadallsafetysigns.Cleanorreplacetheseifyoucannotreadthewordsor seethepictures.Whencleaningthelabelsuseacloth,waterandsoap.Donotusesolvent,gasoline, etc.

Youmustreplacealabelifitisdamaged,missingorcannotberead.Ifalabelisonapartthatis replaced,makesureanewlabelisinstalledonthereplacedpart.SeeyourCaterpillardealerfornew labels.

Noclearanceformaninthisareawhenmachineturns:Severeinjuryor deathfromcrushingcouldoccur.

Connectsteeringframelocklinkbetweenfrontandrearframesbefore liftingmachine,transportingmachineonanothervehicle,or performingservicenearcenterofmachine.

Disconnectsteeringframelocklinkandsecuretoretainingplates beforeresumingoperationormachinewillnotsteer.

GeneralHazardInformation

Attacha"DONOTOPERATE"orsimilarwarningtagtostartswitchorcontrolsbeforeservicingor repairingthemachine.Thesetags,FormSEHS7332,areavailablefromyourCaterpillardealer.

Wearahardhat,protectiveglassesandotherprotectiveequipmentasrequiredbyjobconditions.

Donotwearlooseclothingorjewelrythatcancatchoncontrolsorotherpartsofthemachine.

Makecertainallprotectiveguardsandcoversaresecuredinplaceonthemachine.

Keepthemachine,especiallythedeck,walkwaysandsteps,freeofforeignmaterial,suchasdebris, oil,toolsandotheritemswhicharenotpartofthemachine.

Securealllooseitemssuchaslunchboxes,toolsandotheritemswhicharenotpartofthemachine.

Knowtheappropriatework-sitehandsignalsandwhogivesthem.Acceptsignalsfromoneperson only.

Neverputmaintenancefluidsintoglasscontainers.

Useallcleaningsolutionswithcare.

Reportallneededrepairs.

Donotallowunauthorizedpersonnelonthemachine.

PressureAir

Pressureaircancausepersonalinjury.Whenusingpressureairforcleaning,wearaprotectiveface shield,protectiveclothingandprotectiveshoes.

Themaximumairpressuremustbebelow205kPa(30psi)forcleaningpurposes.

FluidPenetration

Alwaysuseaboardorcardboardwhencheckingforaleak.Escapingfluidunderpressure,evenapinholesizeleak,canpenetratebodytissue,causingseriousinjury,andpossibledeath.Iffluidisinjected intoyourskin,itmustbetreatedbyadoctorfamiliarwiththistypeofinjuryimmediately.

AsbestosInformation

Cautionshouldbeusedtoavoidbreathingdustthatmaybegeneratedwhenhandlingcomponents containingasbestosfibers.Ifthisdustisinhaled,itcanbehazardoustoyourhealth.Componentsin Caterpillarproductsthatmaycontainasbestosfibersarebrakepads,brakebandandlining assemblies,clutchplatesandsomegaskets.Theasbestosusedinthesecomponentsisusuallybound inaresinorsealedinsomeway.Normalhandlingisnothazardousaslongasairbornedustwhich containsasbestosisnotgenerated.

Ifdustwhichmaycontainasbestosispresent,thereareseveralcommonsenseguidelinesthatshould befollowed.

*Neverusecompressedairforcleaning.

*Avoidbrushingorgrindingofasbestoscontainingmaterials.

*Forcleanup,usewetmethodsoravacuumequippedwithahighefficiencyparticulateair (HEPA)filter.

*Useexhaustventilationonpermanentmachiningjobs.

*Wearanapprovedrespiratorifthereisnootherwaytocontrolthedust.

*Complywithapplicablerulesandregulationsfortheworkplace(forexampleintheU.S.A., OSHArequirementsassetforthin29CFR1910.1001).

*Followenvironmentalrulesandregulationsfordisposalofasbestos.

*Avoidareaswhereasbestosparticlesmaybeintheair.

CrushingorCuttingPrevention

Supportequipmentandattachmentsproperlywhenworkingbeneaththem.Donotdependon hydrauliccylinderstoholditup.Anyattachmentcanfallifacontrolismoved,orifahydraulicline breaks.

Neverattemptadjustmentswhilethemachineismovingortheengineisrunningunlessotherwise specified.

Wherethereareimplementlinkages,theclearanceinthelinkageareawillincreaseordecreasewith movementoftheimplement.

Stayclearofallrotatingandmovingparts.

Keepobjectsawayfrommovingfanblades.Theywillthroworcutanyobjectortoolthatfallsoris pushedintothem.

Donotuseakinkedorfrayedwireropecable.Weargloveswhenhandlingthewireropecable.

Retainerpins,whenstruckwithforce,canflyoutandinjurenearbypersons.Makesuretheareais clearofpeoplewhendrivingretainerpins.

Wearprotectiveglasseswhenstrikingaretainerpintoavoidinjurytoyoureyes.

Chipsorotherdebriscanflyoffobjectswhenstruck.Makesurenoonecanbeinjuredbyflying debrisbeforestrikinganyobject.

Rops/FopsProtectiveStructures

Thisisanattachedguardlocatedabovetheoperator'scompartmentandsecuredtothemachine.

ToavoidpossibleweakeningoftheRolloverProtectiveStructure(ROPS)orFallingObjects ProtectiveStructure(FOPS),consultaCaterpillardealerbeforealteringtheROPSorFOPSinany way.TheprotectionofferedbythisROPSorFOPSwillbeimpairedifithasbeensubjectedto structuraldamage.Structuraldamagecanbecausedbyanoverturnaccidentorbyfallingobjects.

BurnPrevention

Atoperatingtemperature,theenginecoolantishotandunderpressure.Theradiatorandalllinesto heatersortheenginecontainhotwaterorsteam.Anycontactcancausesevereburns.

Steamcancausepersonalinjury.

Checkthecoolantlevelonlyaftertheenginehasbeenstoppedandthefillercapiscoolenoughto removewithyourbarehand.

Removethecoolingsystemfillercapslowlytorelievepressure.

Coolingsystemconditionercontainsalkalithatcancausepersonalinjury.Avoidcontactwiththeskin andeyesanddonotdrink.

Coolant

Allowcoolingsystemcomponentstocoolbeforedraining.

Oils

Hotoilandcomponentscancausepersonalinjury.Donotallowhotoilorcomponentstocontactthe skin.

Atoperatingtemperature,thehydraulictankishotandcanbeunderpressure.

Removethehydraulictankfillercaponlyaftertheenginehasbeenstoppedandthefillercapiscool enoughtoremovewithyourbarehand.

Removethehydraulictankfillercapslowlytorelievepressure.

Relieveallpressureinair,oil,fuelorcoolingsystemsbeforeanylines,fittingsorrelateditemsare disconnectedorremoved.

Batteries

Batteriesgiveoffflammablefumeswhichcanexplode.

Donotsmokewhenobservingthebatteryelectrolytelevels.

Electrolyteisanacidandcancausepersonalinjuryifitcontactsskinoreyes.

Alwayswearprotectiveglasseswhenworkingwithbatteries.

FireorExplosionPrevention

Allfuels,mostlubricantsandsomecoolantmixturesareflammable.

Fuelleakedorspilledontohotsurfacesorelectricalcomponentscancauseafire.

Donotsmokewhilerefuelingorinarefuelingarea.

Donotsmokeinareaswherebatteriesarecharged,orwhereflammablematerialsarestored.

Batteriesinseriesmaybelocatedinseparatecompartments.Whenusingjumpercablesalways connectpositive(+)cabletopositive(+)terminalofbatteryconnectedtostartersolenoidand negative(-)cablefromexternalsourcetostarternegative(-)terminal.(Ifnotequippedwithstarter negativeterminal,connecttoengineblock.)

Seethe"OperationSection"ofthismanualforspecificinstructions.

Cleanandtightenallelectricalconnections.Checkdailyforlooseorfrayedelectricalwires.Haveall looseorfrayedelectricalwirestightened,repairedorreplacedbeforeoperatingthemachine.

Keepallfuelsandlubricantsstoredinproperlymarkedcontainersandawayfromallunauthorized persons.

Storealloilyragsorotherflammablematerialinaprotectivecontainer,inasafeplace.

Donotweldorflamecutonpipesortubesthatcontainflammablefluids.Cleanthemthoroughlywith nonflammablesolventbeforeweldingorflamecuttingonthem.

Removeallflammablematerialssuchasfuel,oilandotherdebrisbeforetheyaccumulateonthe machine.

Donotexposethemachinetoflames,burningbrush,etc.,ifatallpossible.

Shield3,whichprotecthotexhaustcomponentsfromoilorfuelsprayintheeventofaline,tubeor sealfailure,mustbeinstalledcorrectly.

Ether

Etherispoisonousandflammable.

Breathingethervaporsorrepeatedcontactofetherwithskincancausepersonalinjury.

Useetheronlyinwellventilatedareas.

Donotsmokewhilechangingethercylinders.

Useetherwithcaretoavoidfires.

Donotstorereplacementethercylindersinlivingareasorintheoperator'scompartment.

Donotstoreethercylindersindirectsunlightorattemperaturesabove39°C(102°F).

Discardcylindersinasafeplace.Donotpunctureorburncylinders.

Keepethercylindersoutofthereachofunauthorizedpersonnel.

Lines,TubesandHoses

Donotbendorstrikehighpressurelines.Donotinstallbentordamagedlines,tubesorhoses.

Repairanylooseordamagedfuelandoillines,tubesandhoses.Leakscancausefires.Contactyour Caterpillardealerforrepairorreplacement.

Checklines,tubesandhosescarefully.Donotuseyourbarehandtocheckforleaks.Useaboardor cardboardtocheckforleaks.See"FluidPenetration"inthe"Safety"sectionformoredetails.Tighten allconnectionstotherecommendedtorque.Replaceifanyofthefollowingconditionsarefound.

*Endfittingsdamagedorleaking.

*Outercoveringchafedorcutandwirereinforcingexposed.

*Outercoveringballooninglocally.

*Evidenceofkinkingorcrushingoftheflexiblepartofhose.

*Armouringembeddedintheoutercover.

*Endfittingsdisplaced.

Makesurethatallclamps,guardsandheatshieldsareinstalledcorrectlytopreventvibration,rubbing againstotherparts,andexcessiveheatduringoperation.

TireInformation

Explosionsofair-inflatedearthmovingtireshaveresultedfromheat-inducedgascombustioninside thetires.Theheat,generatedbyweldingorheatingrimcomponents,externalfire,orexcessiveuseof brakescancausegaseouscombustion.

Atireexplosionismuchmoreviolentthanablowout.Theexplosioncanpropelthetire,rimandfinal drivecomponentsasfaras500m(1500ft)ormorefromthemachine.Boththeforceoftheexplosion andtheflyingdebriscancausepersonalinjuryordeath,andpropertydamage.

Donotapproachatirecloserthantheoutsideofthearearepresentedbytheshadedareaintheabove drawing.

Drynitrogen(N2)gasisrecommendedforinflationoftires.Ifthetireswereoriginallyinflatedwith air,nitrogenisstillpreferredforadjustingthepressure.Nitrogenmixesproperlywithair.

Nitrogeninflatedtiresreducethepotentialofatireexplosion,becausenitrogendoesnotsupport combustion.Also,nitrogenhelpspreventoxidationandtheresultingdeteriorationofrubberand corrosionofrimcomponents.

Propernitrogeninflationequipmentandtraininginitsusearenecessarytoavoidoverinflation.Atire blowoutorrimfailurecanresultfromimproperormisusedequipment.

Standbehindthetreadanduseaself-attachingchuckwheninflatingatire.

Servicingandchangingtiresandrimscanbedangerousandshouldbedoneonlybytrainedpersonnel usingpropertoolsandprocedures.Ifcorrectproceduresarenotfollowedwhileservicingtiresand rims,theassembliescouldburstwithexplosiveforceandcauseseriouspersonalinjuryordeath. Followcarefullythespecificinformationprovidedbyyourtireorrimservicingmanordealer.

MountingandDismounting

Mountanddismountthemachineonlywherestepsand/orhandholdsareprovided.

Usebothhandsandfacethemachine,whenmountinganddismounting.

Nevergetonoroffamovingmachine.Neverjumpoffthemachine.

Donottrytoclimbonoroffthemachinewhencarryingtoolsorsupplies.Useahandlinetopull equipmentupontotheplatform.

SecondaryCabExit

Therightcabwindowservesasasecondaryexit.

BeforeStartingtheEngine

Removeallvandalismlocksandplaceinstoredposition.

Starttheengineonlyfromtheoperator'sstation.Nevershortacrossthestarterterminalsoracrossthe batteries,asthiscouldbypasstheengineneutral-startsystemaswellasdamagetheelectricalsystem.

Inspecttheconditionoftheseatbeltandmountinghardware.Replaceanydamagedorwornparts. Replacetheseatbeltregardlessofappearance,afterthreeyearsofuse.

Adjusttheseatsothatfullpedaltravelcanbeobtainedwiththeoperator'sbackagainsttheseatback.

Makesurethemachineisequippedwithalightingsystemasrequiredbyconditions.

Makesurealllightsareworkingproperly.

Makesurenooneisworkingon,underneathorclosetothemachinebeforestartingtheengineor beginningtomovethemachine.Makesuretheareaisfreeofpersonnel.

EngineStarting

Donotstarttheengineormoveanyofthecontrolsifthereisa"DONOTOPERATE"orsimilar warningtagattachedtothestartswitchorcontrols.

Lowerthebladetotheground.MoveallhydrauliccontrolstotheHOLDpositionbeforestartingthe engine.

MovethetransmissioncontrollevertoNEUTRAL.

Engagethetransmissionneutrallock.

Engagetheparking/secondarybrake.

Startandoperatetheengineinawellventilatedareaonly.Inanenclosedarea,venttheexhausttothe outside.

BeforeOperatingtheMachine

Clearallpersonnelfromthemachineandthearea.

Clearallobstaclesfromthepathofthemachine.Bewareofhazardssuchaswires,ditches,etc.

Besureallwindowsareclean.Securethedoorsandwindows.

Adjusttherearviewmirrors(ifequipped)forbestvision,especiallyclosetothemachine.

Makesurethemachinehorn,thebackupalarm,andallotherwarningdevicesareworkingproperly.

Fastentheseatbeltsecurely.

Checkforproperoperationofallcontrolsandprotectivedeviceswhilemovingslowlyinanopen area.

Operatethemachineonlywhileseated.

Operatethecontrolsonlywiththeenginerunning.

Theoperatormustbesatisfiedthatnoonewillbeendangeredbeforemovingthemachine.

Donotallowridersonthemachineunlessadditionalseat,seatbeltandRolloverProtectiveStructure (ROPS)areprovided.

Reportanyneededrepairsnotedduringoperation.

Carryattachmentsclosetotheground,approximately40cm(15in)abovegroundlevel.

Keepthemachineawayfromdumptrucksandothervehiclesthatareunloading.

Stayasafedistancefromtheedgeofcliffs,overhangsandslideareas.

Ifthemachinebeginstosidesliponagrade,immediatelydisposeoftheloadandturnthemachine downhill.

Becarefultoavoidtheconditionwhichcouldleadtotippingwhenworkingonhills,banksorslopes, andwhencrossingditches,ridgesorotherobstructions.

Workupanddownslopes,ratherthansideways,wheneverpossible.

Keepthemachineundercontrolanddonotworkitoveritscapacity.

Besurehitchpointsandthetowingdeviceareadequate.

Connecttrailingequipmenttoadrawbarorhitchonly.

Neverstraddleawireropecableorsimilardevice,norallowotherstodoso.

Nopersonnelshouldbebetweenthemachineandtrailingequipmentwhenmaneuveringtoconnect them.Blockthetongueorhitchoftrailingequipmenttoalignitwiththedrawbarorhitch.

Knowthemaximumheightandreachofyourmachine.

AlwayskeeptheRolloverProtectiveStructure(ROPS)orFallingObjectProtectiveStructure(FOPS) (ifequipped)installedwhenoperatingthemachine.

MachineParking

Parkonalevelsurface.Ifnecessarytoparkonagrade,blockthemachine.

Applytheservicebraketostopthemachine.

MovethetransmissioncontrollevertoNEUTRAL.

Engagethetransmissionneutrallock.

Engagetheparking/secondarybrake.

Underextremelysevere,dustyorwetoperatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationthanisspecified inthe"MaintenanceIntervals"maybenecessary.

CoolingSystemSpecifications

CoolantInformation

NOTICE

Caterpillarrecommendsthatthecoolantmixcontainaminimumof 30%CaterpillarAntifreeze,orequivalent.

Topreventdamagetoyourengine,neveraddcoolanttoanoverheated engine.Allowtheenginetocoolfirst.

Allwateriscorrosiveatengineoperatingtemperature.Thecooling systemshouldbeprotectedwitha3%to6%concentrationofcooling systemconditioneratalltimes,regardlessoftheconcentrationof antifreeze.

Excessivecoolantconditioner(greaterthantherecommended6% initialfill)togetherwithconcentrationsofantifreezegreaterthan65% causedepositstoformandmayresultinradiatortubeblockageand overheating,and/orwaterpumpsealdamage.

DonotuseCaterpillarliquidcoolingsystemconditioner,coolant conditionerelementsorantifreezewithDowtherm209Full-Fill coolant.Dowtherm209Full-Fillcoolantisnotcompatiblewithother antifreezesandcoolantmixtures.

Fillingatover20liters(5U.S.gallons)perminutecancauseairpocketsinthecoolingsystem.

Afterdrainingandrefillingthecoolingsystem,operatetheenginewiththeradiatorcapremoveduntil thecoolantreachesnormaloperatingtemperatureandthecoolantlevelstabilizes.Addcoolantas necessarytofillthesystemtotheproperlevel.

CoolantWaterSpecifications

Hardwater,orwaterwithhighlevelsofcalciumandmagnesiumions,encouragestheformationof insolublechemicalcompoundsbycombiningwithcoolingsystemadditivessuchassilicatesand phosphates.

Thetendencyofsilicatesandphosphatestoprecipitateout-of-solutionincreaseswithincreasingwater hardness.Hardwater,orwaterwithhighlevelsofcalciumandmagnesiumionsencouragesthe formationofinsolublechemicals,especiallyafteranumberofheatingandcoolingcycles.Caterpillar preferstheuseofdistilledwaterordeionizedwatertoreducethepotentialandseverityofchemical insolubility.

Usingwaterthatmeetsthisrequirementmaynotpreventdropoutofthesechemicalcompounds totally,butshouldminimizetheratetoacceptablelevels.

AntifreezeRecommendations NOTICE

Caterpillarrecommendsthatthecoolantmixcontainaminimumof 30%CaterpillarAntifreeze,orequivalent,andacceptablewaterto maintainanadequatewaterpumpcavitationtemperatureforefficient waterpumpperformance.

Premixcoolantsolutiontoprovideprotectiontothelowestexpected outside(ambient)temperature.Pureundilutedantifreezewillfreezeat -23°C(-10°F).

Onlyuseagreaterconcentration(above30%)ofCaterpillar Antifreezeasneededforanticipatedoutside(ambient)temperatures. Donotexceedacoolantmixtureof60%antifreezetowatersincea concentrationabove60%antifreezewillreducetheengine'sfreeze protectionandincreasethepossibilityofdepositformationinthe coolingsystem.

UseCaterpillarAntifreeze,GM6038-Morequivalent.CaterpillarAntifreezeisavailablethrough yourCaterpillardealer.

Itisimportanttousepropercoolanttopreventdamagetocoolingsystemcomponents.Coolants meetingGM6038-M(lowsilicatecontent)specificationsorequivalentmayalsobeused.However, liquidcoolantconditionermustbeaddedtothesecoolants.Seesectionon"Conditioner"inthis manualforfurtherinformation.

Mostcommercialantifreezesareformulatedforgasolineengineapplicationsandwill,therefore,have highsilicatecontent.CaterpillarAntifreezeisformulatedwithalowsilicatecontentandtheproper coolantadditivesforheavydutydieselengines.

ThemajoradvantagesofCaterpillarantifreezeare:

*Significantlyreduceswaterpumpsealleakageproblemscausedbyoverconcentrationof chemicaladditives.

*Thereisnoneedtoaddcoolantinhibitoroninitialfillwhichmustbedonewithcurrent commerciallyavailableantifreezes.

*Highsilicateantifreezesusedwithasupplementalcoolantconditionercancauseabuild-upof solidsoveraperiodoftimewhichcancauseplugging,lossofheattransfer,andwaterpump sealdamage.
