BeltSelection
Treadbar(grouser)penetrationandthereforetractionwillbebetterwhenrunningonnarrower beltsasopposedtowiderbelts.Thesurfacecontactareaontheground(footprint)witheven narrowbeltswillalwaysexceedtheareaonthegroundoftiresonacomparablewheeltractor.The balancebetweenslippageonthegroundandflotationmustbecarefullyconsideredwhenthe tractorisequippedwithwidebelts.TherearethreeStandardbeltwidthsavailable:635mm(25 in),762mm(30in),and889mm(35in).
Inadditiontothestandardbeltconfigurationthereareanadditionalthreetypesofbeltsavailable.
SpecialApplicationBelts
SpecialApplicationbeltshave96grouserswithgrousersthatare38mm(1.5in)talland70mm (2.75in)wide.Standardbeltshave72treadbarsthatare63.5mm(2.5in)talland38mm(1.5in) wide.ThegrousersaretheonlydifferencebetweentheStandardandSpecialApplicationbelts.
TheprincipleadvantagestotheSpecialApplicationbeltsisthereductionofgrouserbending underhighloadsandtractorvibrationathigherspeedsonhardgroundorwhileroading.Thereis alsoacertainamountofdrivetrainprotectionprovidedbytheSpecialApplicationbeltsasthey willsliponthegroundunderextremedrawbarloads.Inwetconditions,theSpecialApplication beltswillnotself-cleanbetweenthetreadbarsaswellastheStandardbeltswill.Anybeltthatis packedwithmaterialbetweenthetreadbarswillhavesignificantlyreducedtraction.
InsideProtectedBelts

InsideProtectedbeltsprovideinsidediameterprotectiontothebelt.InsideProtectedbeltshavea breakerplyofprotectivecablesinsidezerodegreecables(1).Thezerodegreecablesareparallel tothebelt'saxis.Breakerplies(2)arealignedatvaryingdegreestothezerodegreecables.Inside Protectedbeltsareforapplicationsthatarelikelytoresultindamagetotheinsidediameterrubber
andzerodegreecables.Workinpebblyoralluvial(sandy/muddy)soilsshouldbesuchan application.Keepingthezerodegreecablesintactisessentialtogettingnormallifefromabelt.
SideSlopeBelts
SideSlopebeltsareforapplicationsinvolvingasubstantialamountofworkoninclines,slants,or pitches.Insomecases,guideblock(nottreadbar)wearwilldeterminebeltlife.Forthese applications,SideSlopebeltswith48guideblocksareavailable.Allotherbelttypeshave36 guideblocks.SlideSlopebeltshavestandardgrousersandarenotprotectedontheinside diameter.

ExtendedLifeCoolantwasspecificallydesignedforuseindieselenginecoolingsystemsand naturalgasenginecoolingsystems.
ExtendedLifeCoolantextendscoolantlifeto6000servicehoursorfouryears,whichevercomes first.OneadditionofCaterpillar'sExtenderisrequiredtomaintainExtendedLifeCoolant.

NOTE:A50percentExtendedLifeCoolantand50percentdeionizedwatersolutionprovides freezeprotectionto-37°C(-34°F)andanti-boilprotectionto108°C(226°F).DONOTuse ExtendedLifeCoolantatreducedconcentrations(lessthan50percent),astheadditiveswouldbe reducedalongwiththeantifreeze.ExtendedLifeCoolantconcentrateisavailabletolowerthe coolantfreezepointwhenusedinarcticconditions.ExtendedLifeCoolantconcentrationcanbe increasedto60percentfor-52°C(-62°F)freezeprotection.

ExtendedLifeCoolantCoolingSystemMaintenance
NOTICE
UseonlyCaterpillarproductsorcommercialproductsthathave passedCaterpillar'sEC-1specificationforpremixedorconcentrated coolants.
UseonlyCaterpillarExtenderwithExtendedLifeCoolant.
MixingExtendedLifeCoolantwithotherproductsreducesthe ExtendedLifeCoolantservicelife.Failuretofollowthe recommendationsincludedinthissectioncanreducecoolingsystem componentlife.
Inordertomaintainthecorrectbalanceofantifreezeandadditives,careshouldbetakento maintaintheproperExtendedLifeCoolantconcentration.Reducingtheamountofantifreeze lowerstheproportionofadditive,thusloweringthecoolant'sabilitytoprotectthecoolingsystem frompitting,cavitation,erosion,anddeposits.
ProperExtendedLifeCoolantAdditions
NOTE:DONOTaddExtendedLifeCoolantConcentrateasamakeupsolutionforroutine coolingsystemtop-off.AddingconcentratedExtendedLifeCoolantincreasestheconcentrationof glycolinthecoolingsystem.
Duringnormalmaintenance,useapremixedsolutionofapprovedwaterandExtendedLife Coolantasatop-offtothecoolingsystemtobringthecoolanttotheproperlevel.UseExtended LifeCoolantoracoolantthatmeetsCaterpillar'sEC-1specification.IfacoolantthatmeetsEC-1 isnotavailable,usedistilledorde-ionizedwaterasamake-up.Checktheglycollevelofthe coolingsystemwiththe1U-7298CoolantTester(°C)orthe1U-7297CoolantTester(°F).Use ExtendedLifeCoolantConcentratetorestoretheproperglycolconcentrationbeforetheengineis exposedtofreezingtemperatures.
NOTICE
Donotuseconventionalcoolanttotopoffacoolingsystemusing ExtendedLifeCoolant.
Donotusesupplementalcoolantadditivesotherthanextenderin coolingsystemsfilledwithExtendedLifeCoolant.
IfacoolingsystemusingExtendedLifeCoolanthasbeentoppedoffwithasmallamountof conventionalcoolantorifasupplementalcoolantadditivewasaddedtothesystembymistake,the systemwillnotbeharmed.
Shouldthecoolingsystembecomecontaminatedwithconventionalcoolantorsupplemental coolantadditiveexceeding10percentofthecoolingsystem'stotalcapacity,performoneofthe followingactions:
*DrainthecoolingsystemandrefillthecoolingsystemwithExtendedLifeCoolant,or
*Maintainthecoolingsystemasifthecoolingsystemisfilledwithconventionalcoolant.
ExtendedLifeCoolantCoolingSystemCleaning
NOTE:NocleaningagentsaretobeusedwhenacoolingsystemusingExtendedLifeCoolantis drained,flushed,andrefilled.
Cleanwateristheonlysystemcleaning/flushingagentrequiredwhenExtendedLifeCoolantis drainedfromthecoolingsystem.
ExtendedLifeCoolantcanberecycled.Thedrainedcoolantmixturecanbe"distilled"toseparate theethyleneglycolandwaterforreuse.ContactyourCaterpillardealerformoreinformation.
Afterdrainingandrefillingthecoolingsystem,operatetheenginewiththeradiatorfillercap removeduntilthecoolantreachesnormaloperatingtemperatureandthecoolantlevelstabilizes. Addcoolantmixtureasnecessarytofillthesystemtotheproperlevel.
ConvertingaCoolingSystemfromConventionalCoolanttoExtendedLifeCoolant
NOTE:WhenthecoolantischangedfromconventionalcoolanttoExtendedLifeCoolant,a Caterpillarcleanershouldbeused.AftertheuseofCaterpillarcoolingsystemcleaners,thesystem MUSTbethoroughlyflushedwithcleanwater.
ToconvertthecoolingsystemfromconventionalcoolanttoExtendedLifeCoolant,performthe followingprocedure:
1.Drainthecoolant.
2.Flushthesystemwithcleanwatertoremoveanydebris.
3.UseaCaterpillarcleanertocleanthesystem.Followtheinstructionsonthelabel.Caterpillar cleanerisavailablefromyourCaterpillardealer.
4.Drainthecleaner.Flushthecoolingsystemwithcleanwater.
5.Fillthecoolingsystemwithcleanwater.Operatetheengineuntilthecoolingsystem temperatureis49to66°C(120to150°F).
6.Drainandflushthecoolingsystemwithcleanwater.
7.RepeatStep5andStep6.
8.FillthecoolingsystemwithExtendedLifeCoolant.
9.AttachalabeltothecoolingsystemtoindicatethesystemhasbeenconvertedtouseExtended LifeCoolant.

CoolingSystemSpecifications
GeneralCoolantInformation
Manyenginefailurescouldbeavoidedwithpropercoolingsystemmaintenance.Coolingsystem maintenanceisasimportantasfuelandlubricatingsystemmaintenance.Coolantqualityisas importantasthequalityoffuelandlubricatingoil.
Thethreemainfunctionsthatcoolantservesare:
*Adequateheattransferandanti-boilprotection
*Cavitationerosionandcorrosionprotection
*Freezeprotection
Coolantisnormallycomposedofthreeelements:
*Water
*Additives
*Glycol
Water
Distilledordeionizedwaterisrecommendedforuseincoolingsystems.DONOTusehardwater, tapwater,orsaltsoftenedtapwaterinenginecoolingsystems.Ifdistilledordeionizedwateris NOTavailable,usewaterthatmeetstheminimumacceptablerequirements.


NOTICE
Waterthatdoesnotmeettheminimumacceptablelimitswillreduce engineservicelifewhenusedincoolingsystems.
Ifyouarenotsureofthecontentofthewater,contactyourCaterpillardealer,yourlocalwater department,youragriculturalagent,oranindependentlaboratorytoanalyzethewater.
Additives
Additivesmustbeincludedinallcoolantmixtures.Additiveshelppreventtheformationofrust, scale,andmineraldeposits.Additivesprotectmetalsfromcorrosion,preventlinercavitation,and containanti-foamingagents.Additivesaredepletedduringengineoperationandneedtobe replenished.Additivescanbereplenishedthroughtheadditionofsupplementalcoolantadditives (usedwithconventionalcoolants)orExtender(usedwithCaterpillarExtendedLifeCoolant).
Nitritesornitriteandmolybdateadditivesprotectthecylinderlinerfromcavitationcorrosion. Nitritesaredepleted,creatingtheneedforadditivesorExtender.AdditivesandExtenderalso containotherinhibitorsthatcanbedepletedfromcoolingsystems.
Aninsufficientadditiveconcentrationdoesnotprovideadequateprotectionforcoolingsystems. Anexcessiveadditiveconcentrationcancauseadditivestodropoutofthesolution,depositinside thecoolingsystem,orformagelintheradiator.Depositscanbeintheformofsludgeandscale whichaccumulateonhotenginesurfaces.Depositsreducecoolingsystemeffectiveness,orcause waterpumpleaks.
Tomaintainconventionalcoolingsystemprotection,itisnecessarytomonitorsupplemental coolantadditiveconcentration.Maintaintheproperadditivelevelsinthecoolingsystem.
Glycol
Enginecoolantglycolisnormallyeitherethyleneorpropylene.Glycolraisestheboilingpointof watertohelppreventboil-over,providesfreezeprotection,helpspreventwaterpumpcavitation, andreducescylinderlinerpitting.
NOTICE
Forambienttemperaturesrequiringlowerfreezeprotection(higher than50percentglycol),useethyleneglycol.DONOTusepropylene glycol.
Properfreeze/boilprotectionrequirestheproperratioofglycolandacceptablewater.Usethe followingchartstodetermineglycolconcentrationstomixwithacceptablewater.


Usethe1U-7298CoolantTester(°C)orthe1U-7297CoolantTester(°F)tocheckthecoolant solutionperiodicallytoensureadequatefreeze/boilprotection.Therefractometersgiveimmediate, accuratereadingsandcanbeusedwithethyleneorpropyleneglycol.
NOTE:Formoredetailedspecifications,referto:KnowYourCoolingSystem,SEBD0518,and CoolantandYourEngine,SEBD0970,orcontactyourCaterpillardealer.
CoolantRecommendations
*Preferred-Caterpillar'sExtendedLifeCoolant(ELC).
*Recommended-Caterpillar'sDieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolant(DEAC).
*Acceptable-AnylowsilicatecoolantthatmeetsTruckMaintenanceCouncil(TMC) RecommendedPractice(RP)329,TMCRP330,orASTMD4985requirementswhenused withsupplementalcoolantadditives.
*Permitted-Amixtureofacceptablewaterandasupplementalcoolantadditive,where freezeprotectionisnotnecessary.
*Unacceptable-AnyhighsilicatecoolantthatisclassifiedasmeetingASTMD3306.
NOTICE
Mostcommercialenginecoolant/antifreezesareformulatedfor gasolineengineapplicationsandhavehighsilicatecontent.High silicatesarecondusivetocylinderlinercavitationandcorrosion. CaterpillarDOESNOTrecommendhighsilicatecoolant/antifreezes.
NOTE:Duetoindividualengineapplications,enginecoolingsystemmaintenancepracticesmay needperiodicevaluation.
NOTICE

Whenfillingoraddingcoolanttothesystem,premixthecoolantsolutionpriortopouringitinto thecoolingsystem.Pure,undilutedglycolwillfreezeat-23°C(-10°F).Useacoolantsolutionthat isinarangewhichwillprovideprotectiontothelowestexpectedoutside(ambient)temperature andprovidetherequiredboil-overprotection.

NOTE:Keepaclosewatchforleaks.Ifleakingisobserved,findthesourceandcorrecttheleak. Checkthefluidlevelsmorefrequentlythantherecommendedperiodsifleakingissuspectedor observed.

*Inspecttheimplementsfordamageorexcessivewear.Repairifdamaged.
*Inspectthree-pointhitchcylindersandlinkage(ifequipped)fordamageorexcessive wear.Repairifdamaged.

*Inspectthealternatorfortrashbuild-up.Cleanoutchaffanddebrisfromtheoutside screen.Makesurethatnodebrisisunderneaththescreen.Cleanasneeded.

Operationofanalternatorwithpluggedscreenscandrasticallyreduce servicelife.

*Inspectthefloodlamps,headlamps,andtaillampsforbrokenbulbsandlenses.Replaceif broken.

*Removeanytrashbuild-upintheenginecompartment.Inspectandrepairanyengine compartmentleaks.
*Inspectthecoolingsystemforleaks,faultyhosesandtrashbuild-up.Correctanyleaks andremoveanytrashfromradiator.
*Inspectthealternator,fan,andairconditionerbeltsforlooseness.Ifabeltappearstoo loose,seethetopicAlternator,FanandAirConditionerBeltsunderEvery250Service HoursorMonthlyintheMaintenanceSectionofthismanual.
*Inspecttheengineairlinesclampsfortightness.Aleakingairlinedownstreamoftheair filtercancauseenginedamagebyallowingunfilteredairtoentertheengine.

*Servicetheairfilterelementswhentheyellowpistonenterstheredareaintherestriction gauge.

*Inspectthehydraulicsystemforleaks.Inspectthetanks,hoses,tubes,plugs,joints,and fittings.Correctanyleaks.
*Inspectfinaldrivesforleaks.
*Makesurethatcoversandguardsarefirmlyinplace.Inspectfordamage.
*Inspectandrepairanytransmissionleaks.

*Maintainthefuelleveltothebottomofthefillneck.Cleanthefillercapasnecessary.
NOTICE
Overfillingthefueltankwillnotallowsufficientairspacefornormal expansionandcancauselossoffueloutthevent.

*Drainmoistureandsediment,asrequired,fromthefueltankandprimaryfuelfilter(if equipped).

*Inspectthesteps,walkways,andhandholdsfortheirconditionandcleanliness.Inspectthe RolloverProtectiveStructure(ROPS)fordamage.ContactyourCaterpillardealerfor repairsifnecessary.
*Makesurethatthehorn,lights,hazardlamps,guards,etc.,areinproperworkingorder. Adjustthemirrorinordertoallowproperviewingfromtheseatinordertoseeclosebehind themachine.SeethetopicMonitoringSystemsandCabFeaturesintheOperationSection ofthismanual.
*Inspecttheoperator'scompartmentforcleanliness.Keeptheoperator'scompartment clean.

*Checkforoilleaksonsuspensionpivots,midrollerhubsandfrontidlerhubs.Repairif necessary.
