MaintenanceIntervals

Usetheservicehourmetertodetermineservicingintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily, weekly,monthly,etc.)canbeusedinsteadofservicehourmeterintervalsiftheyprovidemore convenientservicingschedulesandapproximatetheindicatedservicehourmeterreading. Recommendedserviceshouldalwaysbeperformedattheintervalthatoccursfirst.

Underextremelysevere,dustyorwetoperatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationthanis specifiedintheMaintenanceIntervalschartmightbenecessary.

Performserviceonitemsatmultiplesoftheoriginalrequirement.Forexample,atEvery500 ServiceHours,alsoservicethoseitemslistedunderEvery250ServiceHoursandEvery10 ServiceHoursorDaily.

CoolingSystemSpecifications

CoolantInformation

Thepropercoolantmixtureisimportantintoday'sdieselengines.Dieselengineoperating temperatureshaveincreasedtoimproveengineefficiency.Thisalsomeanspropercooling systemmaintenanceisespeciallyimportant.Overheating,excessivecooling,componentpitting, cavitationerosion,pistonseizuresandpluggedheatexchangersareresultsofcoolingsystem failures.

Propercoolantiscritical,asisthequalityoffuelandlubricatingoil.Maintenancepracticesmay needtobere-evaluatedtoproperlymaintaintheengine'scoolingsystem.Itisimportantthatthis sectionbereadcarefully.

NOTICE

Neveroperatewithoutathermostatinthecoolingsystem.The thermostatsmaintaintheenginecoolantattheproperoperating temperature.

Neveraddcoolantorwatertoanoverheatedengine,enginedamage canresult.Allowtheenginetocoolfirst.Fillingatover5U.S.gallon (20L)perminutecancauseairpocketsinthecoolingsystem.

Caterpillardoesnotrecommendtheuseofcoolingsystemsolutions thatareintendedtostopleaks.Useoftheseproductsmayresultin enginedamage.

Caterpillarrecommendsthatthecoolantmixturecontainaminimum of30%CaterpillarAntifreeze,orequivalent.

Thecoolingsystemshouldbeprotectedwithaminimumof3% concentrationofliquidsupplementalcoolantadditiveatalltimes, regardlessoftheconcentrationofantifreeze.

Iftheengineistobestoredin,orshippedto,anareawithfreezing temperatures,thecoolingsystemmustbeprotectedtothelowest expectedoutside(ambient)temperature.

Checkthespecificgravityoftheantifreezesolutionfrequentlyincoldweathertoensureadequate freezeprotection.

CoolantMixtureforCaterpillarEngines

Properenginecoolantisacombinationofwater,antifreezeandsupplementalcoolantadditive. Eachingredientofthemixturemustmeetspecificguidelinesfortheenginecoolanttoperform properly.ThecoolantmixtureusedinCaterpillarenginesmustprovidethefollowingfunctions.

*Adequateheattransfer.

*Cavitationerosionprotection.

*Freeze&boilprotection.

*Sludge&scaleprotection.

*Corrosionprotection.

*Compatibilitywithsystemhoses&seals.

Water(Coolant)

Allwateriscorrosiveatengineoperatingtemperature.Distilledordeionizedwateris recommendedbecauseoflessmineraldropoutthanhardortapwater.Tapwater,evenartificially softenedwithsalt,isnotrecommendedforuseinyourengine'scoolingsystem.

Calcium,magnesium,chloridesandsulfatesareallmineralsthatmakeupthedissolvedsolidsin thewater.Excessiveamountsoftheseminerals(inhardwater)cancombinewithsupplemental coolantadditives(silicatesandphosphates)toformsludgeorscaledeposits.Themineraldeposits (silicates,phosphates,calciumandmagnesium)reducetheeffectivenessofthecoolingsystem, especiallyafteranumberofheatingandcoolingcycles.Theymaycollectonhotinternalengine surfacesandinthecoolingsystemtoreducetheeffectivenessofthecoolingsystem.

Ifdistilledorde-ionizedwaterisNOTavailable,usewaterthatmeetstheminimumacceptable requirementsinthechart.Todetermineyourwatercharacteristics,contactthelocalwater department,agriculturalagentoranindependentlaboratorytoperformthetestingservice.

NOTE:Someapplicationshaveelectedtorunwithsupplementalcoolantadditivetreatedwater withoutglycol.DonotmixcoolantadditivetreatedwaterinthecoolingsystemwithCaterpillar Antifreeze.Thisincompatibilitycouldcausecoolingsystemdamagebecausethecoolantwillhave anexcessiveconcentrationofcoolantadditive.Followtheinstructionsprovidedbytheantifreeze supplier.

NOTICE

Caterpillarrecommendsthatthecoolantmixturecontainaminimum of30%CaterpillarAntifreeze(orequivalent)with70%distilledor deionizedwatertomaintainanadequatecavitationtemperaturefor efficientwaterpumpperformance.Antifreezeconcentrationshouldbe selectedtoprovideprotectiontothelowestexpectedoutside(ambient) temperature.

Checkthespecificgravityoftheantifreezesolutionfrequentlyincold weathertoensureadequatefreezeprotection.Premixcoolantsolution toprovideprotectiontothelowestexpectedoutside(ambient) temperature.Pureundilutedantifreezewillfreezeat-10°F(-23°C).

Antifreezeconcentrationsabove60%antifreezeto40%waterare NOTrecommendedbecausethehigherconcentrationslimittheability ofthecoolantmixturetoabsorbsupplementalcoolantadditive.

UseCaterpillarAntifreezeoranylowsilicate(ethyleneorpropyleneglycol)antifreezethatmeets ASTMD4985-89(GMSpecification6038-M)requirements.Mostcommercialantifreezesare formulatedforgasolineengineapplicationsandhavehighsilicatecontent.Caterpillar Antifreezeisformulatedwithalowsilicatecontentandthepropercoolantadditivesforheavy dutydieselengines.

CaterpillarAntifreezeisavailablethroughyourCaterpillardealerinquantitiesthatfollow.

Addingpureundilutedantifreezeasamakeupsolutionforcoolingsystemtop-offisan unacceptablepractice.AddantifreezepremixedCoolingSystemSpecificationswithacceptable watertothesamefreezeprotectionasyourcoolingsystem.UsetheAntifreezeConcentration charttoassistindeterminingtheconcentrationofCaterpillarAntifreezetouse.

Checkthecoolantsolutionfrequentlyincoldweatherforglycolconcentrationwiththe5P0957or 5P3514CoolantTester(forCaterpillarproducts)toensureadequatefreezeprotection.Thetesters areidenticalexcepttemperaturescales(°Cor°F)andgiveimmediateaccuratereadingsfor antifreeze/coolantsthatcontainethyleneorpropyleneglycol.Bothtestersareavailableatyour Caterpillardealer.

NOTICE

Ifpropyleneglycolbasedantifreezeisused,DONOTallow concentrationgreaterthana50/50antifreezetowatermixture.The measurementoffreezeprotectionmustbemadewitharefractive-type tester(5P0957or5P3514)ratherthanthehydrometer-typetester commerciallyavailable.Thehydrometer-typetestercanbeusedtotest ethyleneglycolbasedantifreeze.

SupplementalCoolantAdditive(ConditionerorInhibitor)

ThecoolingsystemMUSTcontainsupplementalcoolantadditives(SCA)(conditioneror inhibitor)tocontrolcorrosion,cavitationanddeposits.Itisalsonecessarytopreventrust,scale, pittingand/orcorrosionofenginepartscontactedbycoolant.Thecoolingsystemshouldbe protectedwithaminimumof3%concentrationatalltimes,regardlessoftheconcentrationof antifreeze.UsesupplementalcoolantadditiveliquidORanelement(ifequipped)tomaintaina36%concentrationinthecoolingsystem.

NOTICE

Neveruseantifreeze/watercoolantonly,inCaterpillarengineswithout supplementalcoolantadditiveregardlessofantifreezeconcentration.

Caterpillarorothermanufacturer'sproductscanbeusedasthe supplementalcoolantadditive.DonotmixCaterpillarSupplemental CoolantAdditive(Conditioner)liquidorelementswiththeother commercialproductsavailable;selectacoolingsystemtreatmentand useitexclusively.

Excessiveconcentrationofsupplementalcoolantadditivecanform depositswhichmaycauseenginedamage,reducetheengine'sheat

transfercharacteristicsandcouldalsoacceleratewaterpumpseal wear.

Usethe8T5296TestKittocheckandmonitortheSCAconcentrationforantifreeze/watercoolant mixture.TheCaterpillar8T5296TestKitchecksforconcentrationofnitratesinthecoolant solution.

NOTE:Someothermanufacturers'supplementalcoolantadditive(SCA)arephosphatebasedand the8T5296TestKitwillnotprovideaccurateresults.Caterpillarrecommendsthattheirtestkitbe usedtocheckcoolantsolutionconcentration.

IfotherthanCaterpillarproductsareusedasthesupplementalcoolantadditive,followthe manufacturers'recommendationforcoolingsystemtreatmentandtestevaluation.Commercial supplementalcoolantadditiveproductsmustcontainsilicatesandaminimumof70gr/U.S.gallon (1200ppm)nitrites.

Caterpillarliquidsupplementalcoolantadditive(Conditioner)isavailablethroughyourCaterpillar dealerinquantitiesthatfollow.

SupplementalcoolantadditivemustbeaddedEvery250HoursbetweeninitialfillandtheEvery 3000Hourcoolingsystemmaintenanceinterval.Installasupplementalcoolantadditive maintenanceelement(ifequipped)OR.47liter(1U.S.pint/16oz)foreach75liter(19.5gal)of coolingsystemcapacityEvery250Hours.

Pre-charge

CaterpillarAntifreezeDOESNOTrequiresupplementalcoolantadditiveaddedatinitialfill, howeveradditiveisrequiredonamaintenancebasis.Forsystemsequippedwithsupplemental coolantadditiveelements,thelastMAINTENANCEelementshouldnotbereplacedatFLUSH& FILLorOverhauluntilthenext250hourinterval.

Water-OnlyCoolant

AlthoughCaterpillarrecommendsaminimumconcentrationof30%antifreeze,acoolantmixture ofacceptablewaterandSupplementalCoolantAdditive(SCA)canbeusedinapplicationswhere conditionsdonotrequirefreezeprotection(orwhereantifreezeisnotavailable).

AcoolantmixtureofwaterandSCAwillcoolandprovidesomeprotectiontoenginecomponents, however,itwillnotprovidenormalengineservicelife.Antifreeze/watermixturesprovidebetter performancelifethanwater-onlycoolant.

IftheenginecoolingsystemisfilledwithwaterONLY,supplementalcoolantadditive (Conditioner)concentrationshouldbemaintainedat6to8percentmaximum.Donotexceed8% maximumconcentration.Checkwithsupplementalcoolantadditivetestkit.

Maintenanceofthewater-onlycoolantisthesameasmaintenanceoftheantifreeze/watercoolant. The8T5296TestKitcanbeusedtoevaluatetheSCAconcentrationofwater-onlycoolantwith thefollowingmodificationstoStep3andStep5.

STEP3-Addtapwatertothevialuptothe20mlmark.STEP5-Withthedefinedprocedure,the 6%to8%concentrationwillyielda20to27droprange.Lessdropswillindicateunder concentrationofSCAandmoredropswillindicateoverconcentration.Adjusttheconcentration accordinglytomaintaintheproperconcentration.

NOTE:IftheSCAconcentrationisgreaterthanthemaximumof8%,drainsomeofthecoolant andrefillwithacceptablewater,thenretesttheconcentrationlevel.

CoolingSystemCleaning

CleanthesystemaccordingtotheMaintenanceIntervalscheduleorsoonerifthecoolantis contaminated,iftheengineoverheatsoriffoamingisobservedintheradiator.Disregardforthe propermaintenanceofthecoolingsystemcancauseengineoverheatingproblemsthatcouldresult inseveredamagetotheengineanditscomponents.Iftestingandpropermaintenanceofantifreeze and/orSCAconcentrationsarenotperformedasrecommendedintheMaintenanceInterval schedule,thesystemdrainintervalmustbeshortened.

Coolantshouldbedrained,thesystemcleanedandnewcoolantaddedbythefuelconsumption interval,Every3000HoursorTwoYears,whichevercomesfirstfortheenginebeingmaintained. IfnotusingCaterpillarAntifreezeandsupplementalcoolantadditiveasrecommended,thedrain periodmustbeshortenedtoEvery1500HoursorOneYear.

Whenyoudrain,clean,flushandreplacethecoolant,smallparticles,undesirablechemicals,scale andotherdepositformationsareremoved.Thesedepositsreducethenecessaryheattransfer characteristicsofthecoolingsystemandaccelerateweartothewaterpumpseal.Refertothe CoolingSystem(Clean/FlushCoolant)topicintheMaintenanceSectionofthismanual.

CaterpillarCoolingSystemCleanersaredesignedtocleanthesystemofharmfulscaleand corrosion.Itdissolvesmineralscale,corrosionproducts,lightoilcontaminationandsludge. CoolingsystemcleanersareavailablefromyourCaterpillardealerinthequantitieslisted.Follow thelabeldirectionsforproperusage.

Accumulatedgreaseandoilonamachineisafirehazard.Removethis debriswithsteamcleaningorhighpressurewater,atleastevery1000 hoursoreachtimeanysignificantquantityofoilisspilledona machine.

NOTE:Keepaclosewatchforleaks.Ifleakingisobserved,findthesourceandcorrecttheleak. Checkthefluidlevelsmorefrequentlythantherecommendedperiodsifleakingissuspectedor observed.

*Inspecttheimplementsfordamageorexcessivewear.Repairifdamaged.

*Inspectthree-pointhitchcylindersandlinkage(ifequipped)fordamageorexcessive wear.Repairifdamaged.

*Inspectthealternatorfortrashbuild-up.Cleanoutchaffanddebrisfromoutsidescreen, andcheckthatnodebrisisunderneathscreen.Cleanasneeded.

NOTICE

Operationofalternatorwithpluggedscreenscandrasticallyreduce servicelife.

*Inspectthefloodlamps,headlamps,andtaillampsforbrokenbulbsandlenses.Replaceif broken.

*Removeanytrashbuild-upintheenginecompartment.Inspectandrepairanyengine compartmentleaks.

*Inspectthecoolingsystemforleaks,faultyhosesandtrashbuild-up.Correctanyleaks andremoveanytrashfromradiator.

*Inspectthealternator,fan,andairconditionerbeltsforlooseness.Ifabeltappearstoo loose,seethetopicAlternator,FanandAirConditionerBeltsunderEvery250Service HoursorMonthlyintheMaintenanceSectionofthismanual.

*Inspecttheengineairlinesclampsfortightness.Aleakingairlinedownstreamoftheair filtercancauseenginedamagebyallowingunfilteredairtoentertheengine.

*Servicetheairfilterelementswhentheyellowpistonenterstheredareaintherestriction gauge.

*Inspectthehydraulicsystemforleaks.Inspectthetanks,hoses,tubes,plugs,joints,and fittings.Correctanyleaks.

*Inspectfireextinguisherforpropercharge.Rechargeiflow.Replaceifdamaged.

*Inspectthesteps,walkways,andhandholdsfortheirconditionandcleanliness.Inspectthe RolloverProtectiveStructure(ROPS)fordamage.ContactyourCaterpillardealerfor repairsifnecessary.

*Makesurethehorn,lights,hazardlamps,guards,etc.,areinproperworkingorder.Adjust themirrortoallowproperviewingfromtheseattoseeclosebehindthemachine.Seethe topicMonitoringSystemsandCabFeaturesintheOperationSectionofthismanual.

*Inspecttheoperator'scompartmentforcleanliness.Keepitclean.

*Checkthatglasshammerisinstalledonrightsidewindowsill.

*Checkforoilleaksonsuspensionpivots,midrollerhubsandfrontidlerhubs.Repairif necessary.

*Inspectforrocksormudbuild-upbetweendrivewheels(1)andidlerwheels(2).Cleanif excessivedebrisispresent.

Lines,TubesandHoses

Inspectallhydraulic,pressureoil,fuel,hightemperaturewater,etc.,lines,tubesandhosesfor damage,excessivewear,andlooseness.Donotuseyourbarehandstocheckforleaks.Use cardboardoraboard.SeethetopicFluidPenetrationintheSafetySectionofthismanualformore detailedinformation.

Replacedamaged,worn,etc.,lines,tubes,andhoses.ContactyourCaterpillardealerforrepairor replacement.

DriveBeltInspection

Inspectfordamagedandexcessivelywornbelts.Thedrivebeltistheonlymovingundercarriage componentexpectedtohavesubstantialwear.However,allcomponentsshouldbeexaminedfor damageduringeachmachineinspection.

Usethefollowingguidelineswheninspectingthesecomponents:

Insidetherubberbeltcarcassarefourlayersofcable,similartothecablesusedinradialtires.

Themostimportantsetofcablesarelocatedabout8mm(.3in)beneaththeinsidesurfaceofthe belt.Thissetofcables,calledzerodegree(0°)cables,controlsbelttension.

Theotherthreesetsofcables,calledbreakercables,arelocatedbetweenthe0°cablesandthe outsidesurfaceofthebelt.Thesearelaidinvariousanglestoprovidelateralsupportandtoprotect the0°cables.

Whenanyofthecablesareexposedtomoisturebycutsorgougesintherubber,theydeteriorate byrusting.

Toprolongbeltlife,akitisavailablefromyourCaterpillardealertorepairthecutsorgouges. RefertoSpecialInstructionSEHS8713formoredetailedinformation.

Cuts,gougesandminorwearontheguideblocksarenotexpectedtocauseoperationalproblems.

Portionsofindividualgrouserbarsthatbecomeseparatedfromthebeltarenotexpectedtoaffect tractionandneednotbereplaced.

Piecesofrubbermaybecomeseparatedfromthemidrollerrimduetorocksanddebristhatgetin theundercarriagesystem.Ifmorethan50percentoftherubberismissingfromanyroller,the rollerrimshouldbereplaced.

Piecesofrubbermaybecomeseparatedfromthedrivewheelrimduetorocksanddebrisinthe undercarriagesystem.Ifmissingrubbercausesslippagebetweendrivewheel(1)andbelt(2),the drivewheelmustbereplaced.

ContactyourCaterpillardealerforinformationonbeltrepairorreplacement.

Usecommerciallyavailablewindowcleaningsolutionstocleanthewindows.

Inspect

Checkifglasshammerisinstalledanddamaged.Replaceifdamagedormissing.Thehammeris locatedontherightsidewindowsill.

FireExtinguisher

Inspect

Checkifthefireextinguisherischargedandundamaged.Rechargeorreplaceifnecessary.

SeatBelt

InspectforWearorDamage

Replacetheseatbeltafterthreeyearsofusage,regardlessofappearance.

Seatbeltandmountinghardwaremustbeinspectedforwearordamagebeforeoperatingthe machine.Replacethebeltormountinghardwareifwornordamaged.

EngineCrankcase

CheckOilLevel
