MaintenanceIntervals

Usetheservicehourmetertodetermineservicingintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily, weekly,monthly,etc.)maybeusedinsteadofservicehourmeterintervalsiftheyprovidemore convenientservicingschedulesandapproximatetheindicatedservicehourmeterreading. Recommendedserviceshouldalwaysbeperformedattheintervalthatoccursfirst.

Underextremelysevere,dustyorwetoperatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationthanis specifiedinthe"MaintenanceInterval"chartmaybenecessary.

Performserviceonitemsatmultiplesoftheoriginalrequirement.Forexample,at"Every500 ServiceHoursor3Months",alsoservicethoseitemslistedunder"Every250ServiceHoursor Monthly","Every50ServiceHoursorWeekly"and"Every10ServiceHoursorDaily."

MachineDescription

Thismachineisequippedwithadirectinjection3306turbochargedandaftercooleddieselengine. Ithasdifferentialsteeringandatenspeedforward,twospeedreverse,fulldirectdrivepowershift transmission.

Thismachineisdesignedprimarilyasafarmtractor.

CoolingSystemSpecifications

CoolantInformation

Dieselengineoperatingtemperatureshaveincreasedtoimproveengineefficiency.Thismeansproper coolingsystemmaintenanceisespeciallyimportant.Overheating,overcooling,pitting,cavitation erosion,crackedheads,pistonseizures,andpluggedradiatorsareclassiccoolingsystemfailures.In fact,coolantisasimportantasthequalityoffuelandlubricatingoil.

NOTICE

Caterpillarrecommendsthatthecoolantmixturecontainaminimum of30%CaterpillarAntifreeze,orequivalent.Liquidsupplemental coolantadditivemustbeadded,whennotusingCaterpillarAntifreeze, whichcontainstheproperadditive.

Neveraddcoolanttoanoverheatedengine,enginedamagecanresult. Allowtheenginetocoolfirst.

Allwateriscorrosiveatengineoperatingtemperature.Thecooling systemshouldbeprotectedwitha3%to6%concentrationofliquid supplementalcoolantadditiveatalltimes,regardlessofthe concentrationofantifreeze.

Excessivesupplementalcoolantadditivegreaterthanthe recommended6%,togetherwithconcentrationsofantifreezegreater than65%cancausedepositstoformandcanresultinradiatortube blockage,overheating,and/orwaterpumpsealdamage.

Donotuseliquidsupplementalcoolantadditiveorelementsor antifreezewithDowtherm209Full-Fillcoolant.Dowtherm209FullFillcoolantisnotcompatiblewithotherantifreezeandcoolant mixtures.

Dowtherm209full-fillcoolantwilllowerthewaterpumpcavitation temperatureandcoolantboilingpoint.Theseloweredtemperatures willcauseoverheatingatalowerambienttemperaturethanan ethyleneglycolandwatermix.IfDowthermisused,followthe instructionsprovidedanduseonlytheinhibitorpackagerecommended bythesupplier.

Ifthemachineistobestoredin,orshippedto,anareawithfreezing temperatures,thecoolingsystemmustbeprotectedtothelowest expectedoutside(ambient)temperature.

Theenginecoolingsystemisnormallyprotectedto-28°C(-20°F)with CaterpillarAntifreeze,whenshippedfromthefactoryunlessspecial requirementsaredefined.

Checkthespecificgravityofthecoolantsolutionfrequentlyincoldweathertoensureadequate protection.

Cleanthecoolingsystemifitiscontaminated,iftheengineoverheatsoriffoamingisobservedinthe radiator.

Coolantshouldbedrained,thesystemcleanedandnewcoolantaddedevery3000servicehoursor twoyears.WhennotusingCaterpillarAntifreezeandsupplementalcoolantadditiveasrecommended, thedrainperiodmustbeshortenedto1500servicehoursoroneyear.

Fillingatover20liters(5U.S.gallons)perminutecancauseairpocketsinthecoolingsystem.

Afterdrainingandrefillingthecoolingsystem,operatetheenginewiththeradiatorcapremoveduntil thecoolantreachesnormaloperatingtemperatureandthecoolantlevelstabilizes.Addcoolantas necessarytofillthesystemtotheproperlevel.

Neveroperatewithoutathermostatinthecoolingsystem.Coolingsystemproblemscanarisewithout athermostat.

Referto"KnowYourCoolingSystem,"formSEBD0518and"CoolantandYourEngine"form SEBD0970,formoredetailedspecifications.

CoolantWater

Hardwater,orwaterwithhighlevelsofcalciumandmagnesiumions,encouragestheformationof insolublechemicalcompoundsbycombiningwithcoolingsystemadditivessuchassilicatesand phosphates.

Thetendencyofsilicatesandphosphatestoprecipitateout-of-solutionincreaseswithincreasingwater hardness.Hardwater,orwaterwithhighlevelsofcalciumandmagnesiumionsencouragesthe formationofinsolublechemicals,especiallyafteranumberofheatingandcoolingcycles.

Caterpillarpreferstheuseofdistilledwaterordeionizedwatertoreducethepotentialandseverityof chemicalinsolubility.

Usingwaterthatmeetstheminimumacceptablewaterrequirementmaynotpreventdrop-outofthese chemicalcompoundstotally,butshouldminimizetheratetoacceptablelevels.

Antifreeze

NOTICE

Caterpillarrecommendsthatthecoolantmixcontainaminimumof 30%CaterpillarAntifreeze,orequivalentandacceptablewaterto maintainanadequatewaterpumpcavitationtemperatureforefficient waterpumpperformance.

Premixcoolantsolutiontoprovideprotectiontothelowestexpected outside(ambient)temperature.Pureundilutedantifreezewillfreezeat -23°C(-10°F).

Onlyuseagreaterconcentration(above30%)ofCaterpillar Antifreezeasneededforanticipatedoutside(ambient)temperatures. Donotexceedacoolantmixtureof60%antifreezetowatersincea concentrationabove60%antifreezewillreducetheengine'sfreeze protectionandincreasethepossibilityofdepositformationinthe coolingsystem.

UseCaterpillarAntifreezeorGMSpecification6038-MAntifreeze.CaterpillarAntifreezeisavailable throughyourCaterpillardealerinquantitiesthatfollow.

Mostcommercialantifreezesareformulatedforgasolineengineapplicationsandwill,therefore,have highsilicatecontent.CaterpillarAntifreezeisformulatedwithalowsilicatecontentandtheproper coolantadditivesforheavydutydieselengines.

GMSpecification6038-Misalowsilicateantifreeze,butsupplementalcoolantadditivemustbe added.

ThemajoradvantagesofCaterpillarAntifreezeare:

*Significantlyreduceswaterpumpsealleakageproblemscausedbyexcessiveconcentrationof chemicaladditives.

*Thereisnoneedtoaddsupplementalcoolantadditiveoninitialfillwhichmustbedonewith currentcommerciallyavailableantifreezes.

*Highsilicateantifreezesusedwithasupplementalcoolantadditivecancauseabuildupof solidsoveraperiodoftimewhichcancauseplugging,lossofheattransfer,andwaterpump sealdamage.

Makeproperantifreezeadditions.

Addingpureantifreezeasamakeupsolutionforcoolingsystemtop-upisanunacceptablepractice.It increasestheconcentrationofantifreezeinthecoolingsystemwhichincreasestheconcentrationof dissolvedsolidsandundissolvedchemicalinhibitorsinthecoolingsystem.Addantifreezemixedwith watertothesamefreezeprotectionasyourcoolingsystem.

UsethechartbelowtoassistindeterminingtheconcentrationofCaterpillarAntifreezetouse.

SupplementalCoolantAdditive

Supplementalcoolantadditiveisnecessarytopreventrust,scale,pittingand/orcorrosionofengine partsthatcoolantcomesincontactwith.MostantifreezesolutionsDONOTcontainsufficient supplementalcoolantadditive.

NOTICE

Alwaysaddsupplementalcoolantadditiveorequivalenttothecoolant, orinstallaCaterpillarsupplementalcoolantadditiveelement(if equipped).Neverusecoolantonly,exceptifCaterpillarAntifreezeis beingusedwhichcontainstheadditive.Inthiscase,nosupplemental coolantadditiveisneededoninitialfill,butisnecessaryona maintenancebasis.

Usesupplementalcoolantadditiveorasupplementalcoolantadditive element(ifequipped).Thiswillprovidea3%to6%concentrationin thecoolingsystemtohelppreventcorrosion.

Topreventoverinhibitingtheengine'scoolingsystem,neveruseboth theliquidsupplementalcoolantadditiveandthesupplementalcoolant additiveelement(ifequipped)atthesametime.Theuseofthese additivestogethercouldresultinexcessiveconcentrationthatwould exceedtheCaterpillarrecommendedmaximumof6%.

Excessiveconcentrationofanadditivecanformdepositsonthehigher temperaturesurfacesofthecoolingsystemandcreateabarrierthat reducestheengine'sheattransfercharacteristics.Reducedheat transfercouldcausecrackingofthecylinderheadandotherhigh temperaturecomponents.Excessiveconcentrationsofadditivecould alsoacceleratewaterpumpsealwear.

SupplementalcoolantadditiveisneededwhennotusingCaterpillar Antifreezeforpremixedcoolantsolution.

LiquidsupplementalcoolantadditivecanbepurchasedfromyourCaterpillardealer.Followthe instructionsonthecontainer.

NOTICE

DONOTaddsupplementalcoolantadditiveatinitialfillwhenusing CaterpillarAntifreeze.CaterpillarAntifreezecontainsthenecessary supplementalcoolantadditiveprecharge.Additionofsupplemental coolantadditivecouldresultinanoverconcentration.

OninitialfillofaneworreconditionedengineifCaterpillarAntifreezeisnotused,add1liter(1 quart)ofsupplementalcoolantadditive,orequivalent,foreach30liters(8U.S.gallons)sothatthe coolingsystemwillhavea3%to6%concentrationofsupplementalcoolantadditive.

Tomaintaina3%to6%concentrationofadditive,addliquidsupplementalcoolantadditiveorinstall amaintenancesupplementalcoolantadditiveelement(ifequipped),every250servicehoursoroil change,whicheveroccursfirst.Usethe8T5296TestKittocheckforconcentration.

Iftheengineisnotequippedwithspin-onelement,add.25liter(1/2pint)ofsupplementalcoolant additiveforeach38liters(10U.S.gallons)ofcoolantcapacitytomaintainthe3%to6% concentrationofadditive.

CaterpillarCoolingSystemCleanersaredesignedtocleanthesystemofharmfulscaleandcorrosion. Itdissolvesmineralscale,corrosionproducts,lightoilcontaminationandsludge.

Cleanthesystemaccordingtothemaintenanceintervalchart,orwheneverthecoolantisdirtyor foaming.

CoolingsystemcleanersareavailablefromyourCaterpillardealerinthequantitieslistedbelow. Followthelabeldirectionsforproperusage.

EngineCrankcase

CheckOilLevel

NOTICE

Donotoverfillthecrankcasetoavoidenginedamage.

Thecrankcaseoilleveldipstickandfilltubearelocatedontheleftsideoftheengine.

1.Measuretheengineoillevelwiththeenginestoppedandtheoilcold.Theoillevelshouldbeinthe SAFESTARTINGRANGEontheENGINESTOPPEDsideofthedipstick.

Withtheenginerunning,theoillevelshouldbebetweentheADDandtheFULLmarksontheLOW IDLEsideofthedipstick.

2.Removetheoilfillplugandaddoilifnecessary.

3.Cleanandinstallthefillplug.

Transmission

CheckOilLevel

Thetransmissionoildipstickandfilltubearelocatedontheleftsideofthemachine,infrontofthe cab.

1.Measurethetransmissionoillevelwiththeenginestoppedandtheoilcold.Theoillevelshouldbe betweentheADDandFULLmarksontheENGINESTOPPEDsideofthedipstick.

Withtheenginerunning,theoillevelshouldbebetweentheADDandtheFULLmarksontheLOW IDLEsideofthedipstick.

2.Removetheoilfillplugandaddoilifnecessary.

3.Cleanandinstallthefillplug.

ImplementHydraulic

CheckOilLevel

Becauseofthevariednumberandsizesofhydrauliccylindersusedonfarmimplements,theposition oftheimplement(whetherraisedorlowered)caneffecttheimplementhydraulicoillevelinthetank. Thiscouldleadtoinconsistentand/orincorrectoillevelindicationsonthedipstick.Therefore,the implementhydraulicoillevelshouldalwaysbecheckedwiththeimplementinthepositioninwhichit isnormallystoredwhenthemachineisnotbeingused.

1.Opentheaccessdoor.

2.Removethefillcapslowlytorelievepressure.

NOTE:Theimplementoiltankistheonetothefrontofthemachine.

3.MaintaintheoillevelbetweentheADDandFULLmarksonthedipstick.Addoilifnecessary.

4.Inspectthecapgasket.Replaceitifitisdamaged.Installthecapandclosetheaccessdoor.

NOTE:Thehydraulicimplementoilandhydraulicsteeringoildipsticksarenotinterchangeable.

SteeringHydraulic

1.Opentheaccessdoor.

2.Removethefillcapslowlytorelievepressure.

NOTE:Thesteeringoiltankistheonetotherearofthemachine.

3.MaintaintheoillevelbetweentheADDandFULLmarksonthedipstick.Addoilifnecessary.

4.Inspectthecapgasket.Replaceitifitisdamaged.Installthecapandclosetheaccessdoor.

NOTE:Thehydraulicimplementoilandhydraulicsteeringoildipsticksarenotinterchangeable.

CoolingSystem

CheckCoolantLevel

Sightgaugeisvisiblefromtheleftsideofthemachineontherearoftheradiator.

Ifcoolantlevelislow:

1.Pullthehandletoreleasetheradiatorguard.

2.Tilttheradiatorguardforward.

3.Removethecapslowlytorelievepressure.

4.Addcoolantasnecessarytomaintainthelevelinthegreenrangeofthesightgaugewhenthe machineislevel.

5.Inspectthecapseal.Replacethecapifdamaged.

6.Installthecap.Closetheradiatorguard.

ServiceBrakes Test

Withtheenginerunning,presshardonthebrakepedal.Ifyoucannotpressthepedaltowithin13mm (1/2in)oftheconsole,thesystemissatisfactory.

Ifthepedalcanbepushedwithin13mm(1/2in)oftheconsole,checkthebrakefluidlevel(seethe nexttopic).Ifitislow,addfluidtothereservoirtobringthefluidleveltotheFULLmarkandrepeat thetest.Ifthepedalcanstillbepushedcloserthan13mm(1/2in)oftheconsole,contactyour Caterpillardealer.

CheckBFFluidLevel

MaintainfluidlevelbetweentheLOWandFULLmarks.IfthefluidleveldropsbelowtheLOW mark,checktheconditionofthebrakepads.See"ServiceBrakePads"under"Every100Service Hoursor2Weeks."

Holdthebodyofthereservoirwithonehand,whileremovingor installingthecapwiththeotherhand,toavoidthreaddamagetothe baseofthereservoir.

1.Ifthefluidlevelislow,removethecap.

2.Removetherubberdiaphragm.

3.AddfluidtotheFULLmark.

4.Installthediaphragmasshown.

5.Installthecap.

SuspensionPivotBearings

NOTE:Occasionallysomeofthesuspensionpivotbearingfittingswillnotacceptgrease.Thiscanbe causedbydirtplugging.Thisconditioncansometimesberelievedbydeflatingthesuspensionsprings beforeattemptingtolubricatethepluggedfitting.Ifthepluggingcontinues,disassemblyandcleaning isrequiredtoavoidthedamagecausedbydryjoints.ContactyourCaterpillardealerforassistance.

Lubricatesevenfittingsoneachside.Totaloffourteenfittings.

Three-PointHitch

Lubricate

Lubricateoneremotefittingfortheliftcylinderheadbearings(1). Lubricatethetwofittings(2)onthepitchcontrollink.

Lubricatethetwofittings(3)oneachliftlink.

Lubricateonefitting(4)oneachrockshaftassembly.

Lubricateonefitting(5)atthetopofbothliftcylinders.

QuickCoupler

LubricateLinkage

Use1U8268dryspraylubricantat(1)and(2)onbothsidesofthequickcouplerduringperiodsof three-pointhitchuse.

Walk-AroundInspection

InspectMachinevisually

Inspecttheimplementsfordamageorexcessivewear.Repairifdamaged.

Inspectthree-pointhitchcylindersandlinkagefordamageorexcessivewear.Repairifdamaged.

Inspectthelightsforbrokenbulbsandlenses.Replaceifbroken.

Inspectbrakecaliperprotectionscraper.Checkforloosemountingboltsatfinaldrives.Iffreezing conditionshavebeenexperiencedsincelastmachineuse,cleanoutinnerdrivewheelstoprevent excessiveforceonthebrakecaliperprotectionscraperswhenstartingthemachine.

Removeanytrashbuild-upintheenginecompartment.Inspectandrepairanyenginecompartment leaks.

Inspectthecoolingsystemforleaks,faultyhosesandtrashbuild-up.Correctanyleaksandremove anytrashfromradiator.

Inspectthealternator,fanandairconditionerbeltsforlooseness.Ifabeltappearstooloose,see "Alternator,FanandAirConditionerBelts"inthe"Every250ServiceHoursorMonthly"section.
