MaintenanceIntervals

Usetheservicehourmetertodetermineservicingintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily,weekly, monthly,etc.)maybeusedinsteadofservicehourmeterintervalsiftheyprovidemoreconvenient servicingschedulesandapproximatetheindicatedservicehourmeterreading.Recommendedservice shouldalwaysbeperformedattheintervalthatoccursfirst.

Underextremelysevere,dustyorwetoperatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationthanisspecified inthe"MaintenanceIntervals"maybenecessary.

Performserviceonitemsatmultiplesoftheoriginalrequirement.Forexample,atEvery500Service Hoursor3Months,alsoservicethoseitemslistedunderEvery250ServiceHoursorMonthly,Every 50ServiceHoursorWeeklyandEvery10ServiceHoursorDaily.

Safety

WarningSignsandLabels

Thereareseveralspecificsafetysignsonyourmachine.Theirexactlocationanddescriptionofthe hazardarereviewedinthissection.Pleasetakethetimetofamiliarizeyourselfwiththesesafetysigns.

Makesurethatyoucanreadallsafetysigns.Cleanorreplacetheseifyoucannotreadthewordsor seethepictures.Whencleaningthelabelsuseacloth,waterandsoap.Donotusesolvent,gasoline, etc.

Youmustreplacealabelifitisdamaged,missingorcannotberead.Ifalabelisonapartthatis replaced,makesureanewlabelisinstalledonthereplacedpart.SeeyourCaterpillardealerfornew labels.

Donotoperatethismachineunlessyouhavereadandunderstandthe instructionsandwarningsintheOperationandMaintenanceguide. Failuretofollowtheinstructionsorheedthewarningscouldresultin injuryordeath.ContactanyCaterpillardealerforreplacementguides. Propercareisyourresponsibility.

HighPressureCylinder

Donotremoveanyvalve,hydraulicfitting,orvalvecore,nor disassembleanypartsuntilpressurehasbeenrelieved.

TORELIEVEPRESSURE:

1.Shutoffengineandwaitfiveminutesuntilhydraulicsystempressure isrelieved.

2.Relievegaspressureintheaccumulatorcylinderbyopeningthe chargingvalveoneturnonly.

CAUTION:Cylinderschargedwithdrynitrogen.Tochargecylinder; Chargewithdrynitrogengas.

Seeyourcaterpillardealerwhohastoolsanddetailedinformation requiredforchargingcylinders.

Locatedontheaccumulatorattherightrearofthetractor.

ToavoidpossibleweakeningofthisROPS,consultaCaterpillardealer beforealteringthisROPSinanyway.Theprotectionofferedbythis ROPSwillbeimpairedifithasbeensubjectedtostructuraldamageor hasbeeninvolvedinanoverturnincident.

Locatedoutsidethecab,ontheROPS.

SuspensioncollapseswhencontrolismovedtoLOCKDOWNorengine isshutoffreducingclearancebetweenframeandaxlecomponents.Stay clearwithenginerunningtopreventpersonalinjury.

Locatedontherearofthetractorfenders.

General

Attacha"DONOTOPERATE"orsimilarwarningtagtostartswitchorcontrolsbeforeservicingor repairingthemachine.Thesetags,FormSEHS7332,areavailablefromyourCaterpillardealer.

Wearahardhat,protectiveglassesandotherprotectiveequipmentasrequiredbyjobconditions.

Donotwearlooseclothingorjewelrythatcancatchoncontrolsorotherpartsofthemachine.

Makecertainallprotectiveguardsandcoversaresecuredinplaceonthemachine.

Keepthemachine,especiallythedeck,walkwaysandsteps,freeofforeignmaterial,suchasdebris, oil,toolsandotheritemswhicharenotpartofthemachine.

Securealllooseitemssuchaslunchboxes,toolsandotheritemswhicharenotpartofthemachine.

Knowtheappropriatework-sitehandsignalsandwhogivesthem.Acceptsignalsfromoneperson only.

Neverputmaintenancefluidsintoglasscontainers.

Useallcleaningsolutionswithcare.

Reportallneededrepairs.

Donotallowunauthorizedpersonnelonthemachine.

Performallmaintenanceunlessotherwisespecifiedasfollows:

*Parkthemachineonlevelgroundandengagetheparkingbrake.

*Movethetransmissionlevertoneutral.

*Engagethetransmissionneutrallock.

*Theenginestopped.

*Thestartswitchkeyoffandthekeyremoved.

*Thedisconnectswitchoffandthekeyremoved.

PressureAir

Pressureaircancausepersonalinjury.Whenusingpressureairforcleaning,wearaprotectiveface shield,protectiveclothingandprotectiveshoes.

Themaximumairpressuremustbebelow205kPa(30psi)forcleaningpurposes.

FluidPenetration

Alwaysuseaboardorcardboardwhencheckingforaleak.Escapingfluidunderpressure,evenapinholesizeleak,canpenetratebodytissue,causingseriousinjury,andpossibledeath.Iffluidisinjected intoyourskin,itmustberemovedsurgicallybyadoctorfamiliarwiththistypeofinjurywithinafew hours.

AsbestosInformation

Cautionshouldbeusedtoavoidbreathingdustthatmaybegeneratedwhenhandlingcomponents containingasbestosfibers.Ifthisdustisinhaled,itcanbehazardoustoyourhealth.Componentsin Caterpillarproductsthatmaycontainasbestosfibersarebrakepads,brakebandandlining assemblies,clutchplatesandsomegaskets.Theasbestosusedinthesecomponentsisusuallybound inaresinorsealedinsomeway.Normalhandlingisnothazardousaslongasairborndustwhich containsasbestosisnotgenerated.

Ifdustwhichmaycontainasbestosispresent,thereareseveralcommonsenseguidelinesthatshould befollowed.

1.Neverusecompressedairforcleaning.

2.Avoidbrushingorgrindingofasbestoscontainingmaterials.

3.Forcleanup,usewetmethodsoravacuumequippedwithahighefficiencyparticulateair(HEPA) filter.

4.Useexhaustventilationonpermanentmachiningjobs.

5.Wearanapprovedrespiratorifthereisnootherwaytocontrolthedust.

6.Complywithapplicablerulesandregulationsfortheworkplace(forexampleintheU.S.A.,OSHA requirementsassetforthin29CFR1910.1001).

7.Followenvironmentalrulesandregulationsfordisposalofasbestos.

8.Avoidareaswhereasbestosparticlesmaybeintheair.

CrushingorCuttingPrevention

Supportequipmentandattachmentsproperlywhenworkingbeneaththem.Donotdependon hydrauliccylinderstoholditup.Anyattachmentcanfallifacontrolismoved,orifahydraulicline breaks.

Neverattemptadjustmentswhilethemachineismovingortheengineisrunningunlessotherwise specified.

Wherethereareimplementlinkages,theclearanceinthelinkageareawillincreaseordecreasewith movementoftheimplement.

Stayclearofallrotatingandmovingparts.

Keepobjectsawayfrommovingfanblades.Theywillthroworcutanyobjectortoolthatfallsoris pushedintothem.

Donotuseakinkedorfrayedwireropecable.Weargloveswhenhandlingthewireropecable.

Retainerpins,whenstruckwithforce,canflyoutandinjurenearbypersons.Makesuretheareais clearofpeoplewhendrivingretainerpins.

Wearprotectiveglasseswhenstrikingaretainerpintoavoidinjurytoyoureyes.

Chipsorotherdebriscanflyoffobjectswhenstruck.Makesurenoonecanbeinjuredbyflying debrisbeforestrikinganyobject.

RolloverProtectiveStructure(ROPS)

ToavoidpossibleweakeningofthisROPS,consultaCaterpillardealerbeforealteringtheFOPSin anyway.TheprotectionofferedbythisROPSwillbeimpairedifit,orthecab,hasbeensubjectedto structuraldamageorhasbeeninvolvedinanoverturnincident.

BurnPrevention

Coolant

Atoperatingtemperature,theenginecoolantishotandunderpressure.Theradiatorandalllinesto heatersortheenginecontainhotwaterorsteam.Anycontactcancausesevereburns.

Steamcancausepersonalinjury.

Checkthecoolantlevelonlyaftertheenginehasbeenstoppedandthefillercapiscoolenoughto removewithyourbarehand.

Removethecoolingsystemfillercapslowlytorelievepressure.

Coolingsystemconditionercontainsalkalithatcancausepersonalinjury.Avoidcontactwiththeskin andeyesanddonotdrink.

Allowcoolingsystemcomponentstocoolbeforedraining.

Oils

Hotoilandcomponentscancausepersonalinjury.Donotallowhotoilorcomponentstocontactthe skin.

Atoperatingtemperature,thehydraulictankishotandcanbeunderpressure.

Removethehydraulictankfillercaponlyaftertheenginehasbeenstoppedandthefillercapiscool enoughtoremovewithyourbarehand.

Removethehydraulictankfillercapslowlytorelievepressure.

Relieveallpressureinair,oil,fuelorcoolingsystemsbeforeanylines,fittingsorrelateditemsare disconnectedorremoved.

Batteries

Batteriesgiveoffflammablefumeswhichcanexplode.

Donotsmokewhenobservingthebatteryelectrolytelevels.

Electrolyteisanacidandcancausepersonalinjuryifitcontactsskinoreyes. Alwayswearprotectiveglasseswhenworkingwithbatteries.

FireorExplosionPrevention

Allfuels,mostlubricantsandsomecoolantmixturesareflammable.

Fuelleakedorspilledontohotsurfacesorelectricalcomponentscancauseafire.

Donotsmokewhilerefuelingorinarefuelingarea.

Donotsmokeinareaswherebatteriesarecharged,orwhereflammablematerialsarestored.

Batteriesinseriesmaybelocatedinseparatecompartments.Whenusingjumpercablesalways connectpositive(+)cabletopositive(+)terminalofbatteryconnectedtostartersolenoidand negative(-)cablefromexternalsourcetostarternegative(-)terminal.(Ifnotequippedwithstarter negativeterminal,connecttoengineblock.)

Seethe"OperationSection"ofthismanualforspecificinstructions.

Cleanandtightenallelectricalconnections.Checkdailyforlooseorfrayedelectricalwires.Haveall looseorfrayedelectricalwirestightened,repairedorreplacedbeforeoperatingthemachine.

Keepallfuelsandlubricantsstoredinproperlymarkedcontainersandawayfromallunauthorized persons.

Storealloilyragsorotherflammablematerialinaprotectivecontainer,inasafeplace.

Donotweldorflamecutonpipesortubesthatcontainflammablefluids.Cleanthemthoroughlywith nonflammablesolventbeforeweldingorflamecuttingonthem.

Removeallflammablematerialssuchasfuel,oilandotherdebrisbeforetheyaccumulateonthe machine.

Donotexposethemachinetoflames,burningbrush,etc.,ifatallpossible.

Shields,whichprotecthotexhaustcomponentsfromoilorfuelsprayintheeventofaline,tubeor sealfailure,mustbeinstalledcorrectly.

Haveafireextinguisheravailableandknowhowtouseit.Inspectandhaveitservicedas recommendedonitsinstructionplate.

Ether

Etherispoisonousandflammable.

Breathingethervaporsorrepeatedcontactofetherwithskincancausepersonalinjury.

Useetheronlyinwellventilatedareas.

Donotsmokewhilechangingethercylinders.

Useetherwithcaretoavoidfires.

Donotstorereplacementethercylindersinlivingareasorintheoperator'scompartment.

Donotstoreethercylindersindirectsunlightorattemperaturesabove39°C(102°F).

Discardcylindersinasafeplace.Donotpunctureorburncylinders.

Keepethercylindersoutofthereachofunauthorizedpersonnel.

Lines,TubesandHoses

Donotbendorstrikehighpressurelines.Donotinstallbentordamagedlines,tubesorhoses.

Repairanylooseordamagedfuelandoillines,tubesandhoses.Leakscancausefires.Contactyour Caterpillardealerforrepairorreplacement.

Checklines,tubesandhosescarefully.Donotuseyourbarehandtocheckforleaks.Useaboardor cardboardtocheckforleaks.See"FluidPenetration"inthe"Safety"sectionformoredetails.Tighten allconnectionstotherecommendedtorque.Replaceifanyofthefollowingconditionsarefound.

1.Endfittingsdamagedorleaking.

2.Outercoveringchafedorcutandwirereinforcingexposed.

3.Outercoveringballooninglocally.

4.Evidenceofkinkingorcrushingoftheflexiblepartofhose.

5.Armouringembeddedintheoutercover.

6.Endfittingsdisplaced.

Makesurethatallclamps,guardsandheatshieldsareinstalledcorrectlytopreventvibration,rubbing againstotherparts,andexcessiveheatduringoperation.

MountingandDismounting

Mountanddismountthemachineonlywherestepsand/orhandholdsareprovided.

Usebothhandsandfacethemachine,whenmountinganddismounting.

Nevergetonoroffamovingmachine.Neverjumpoffthemachine.

Donottrytoclimbonoroffthemachinewhencarryingtoolsorsupplies.Useahandlinetopull equipmentupontotheplatform.

PreparingtoStarttheEngine

Starttheengineonlyfromtheoperator'sstation.Nevershortacrossthestarterterminalsoracrossthe batteries,asthiscouldbypasstheengineneutral-startsystemaswellasdamagetheelectricalsystem.

Inspecttheconditionoftheseatbeltandmountinghardware.Replaceanydamagedorwornparts. Replacetheseatbeltregardlessofappearance,afterthreeyearsofuse.

Adjusttheseatsothatfullpedaltravelcanbeobtainedwiththeoperator'sbackagainsttheseatback.

Makesurethemachineisequippedwithalightingsystemasrequiredbyconditions.

Makesurealllightsareworkingproperly.

Makesurenooneisworkingon,underneathorclosetothemachinebeforestartingtheengineor beginningtomovethemachine.Makesuretheareaisfreeofpersonnel.

StartingtheEngine

Donotstarttheengineormoveanyofthecontrolsifthereisa"DONOTOPERATE"orsimilar warningtagattachedtothestartswitchorcontrols.

MoveallattachmentcontrolstotheHOLDpositionbeforestartingtheengine.

Movethetransmissionlevertoneutral.

Engagetheneutrallocklever.

Engagetheparkingbrake.

Startandoperatetheengineinawellventilatedareaonly.Inanenclosedarea,venttheexhausttothe outside.

PreparingtoOperatetheMachine

Clearallpersonnelfromthemachineandthearea.

Clearallobstaclesfromthepathofthemachine.Bewareofhazardssuchaswires,ditches,etc.

Besureallwindowsareclean.Securethedoorsandwindowsineithertheopenorshutposition.

Adjusttherearviewmirrors(ifequipped)forbestvision,especiallyclosetothemachine.

Makesurethemachinehorn,thebackupalarm(ifequipped)andallotherwarningdevicesare workingproperly.

Fastentheseatbeltsecurely.

Checkforproperoperationofallcontrolsandprotectivedeviceswhilemovingslowlyinanopen area.

OperatingtheMachine

Operatethemachineonlywhileseated.

Operatethecontrolsonlywiththeenginerunning.

Theoperatormustsatisfyhimselfthatnoonewillbeendangeredbeforemovingthemachine.

Donotallowridersonthemachineunlessadditionalseat,seatbeltandRolloverProtectiveStructure (ROPS)areprovided.

Reportanyneededrepairsnotedduringoperation.

Carryimplementsclosetotheground,approximately40cm(15in)abovegroundlevel.

Stayasafedistancefromtheedgeofcliffs,overhangsandslideareas.

Ifthemachinebeginstosidesliponagrade,immediatelyturnthemachinedownhill.

Becarefultoavoidtheconditionwhichcouldleadtotippingwhenworkingonhills,banksorslopes, andwhencrossingditches,ridgesorotherobstructions.

Workupanddownslopes,ratherthansideways,wheneverpossible.

Keepthemachineundercontrolanddonotworkitoveritscapacity.

Besurehitchpointsandthetowingdeviceareadequate.

Connecttrailingequipmenttoadrawbarorhitchonly.

Neverstraddleawireropecableorsimilardevice,norallowotherstodoso.

Nopersonnelshouldbebetweenthemachineandtrailingequipmentwhenmaneuveringtoconnect them.Blockthetongueorhitchoftrailingequipmenttoalignitwiththedrawbarorhitch.

Knowthemaximumheightandwidthofyourmachine.

AlwayskeeptheRolloverProtectiveStructure(ROPS)(ifequipped)installedwhenoperatingthe machine.

ParkingtheMachine

Parkonalevelsurface.Ifnecessarytoparkonagrade,blockthemachine.

Depresstheservicebraketostopthemachine.

Movethetransmissionlevertoneutral.

Engagetheparkingbrake.Engagetheneutrallocklever.

Lowerallimplementstothegroundandapplyslightdownpressure.

Stoptheengine.

TurnthestartswitchkeytotheOFFposition.

Removethestartswitchkeyandthedisconnectswitchkey.

Originalfastenersremovedfromthemachineshouldbesavedfor reassemblywheneverpossible.Ifnewfastenersareneeded,theymust beofthesamesizeandgradeastheonesthatarebeingreplaced.

Thematerialstrengthidentificationisusuallyshownonthebolthead bynumbers(8.8,10.9,etc.).Thefollowingchartgivesstandardtorques forboltsandnutswithGrade8.8.

NOTE:Metrichardwaremustbereplacedwithmetrichardware.Checkpartsbookforproper replacement.
