AbnormalConditions
Towing
Whentowing,attachthetowlineonlytothetowhooksontheframe.
Donottowfasterthan8kph(5mph).
Shieldingmustbeprovidedonthetowingandtowedvehicle,toprotect theoperatorsifthetowlinebreaks.
Donothavetensiononthetowlinewheninspectingit.
Donotjerkthetowline.Itmaybreak.
Besurethelineisstrongenoughandisingoodcondition.
Useatowbarifthemachineistobemovedmorethanafewfeet.
Ifatowbarisnotavailable,attachamachineofequalsizetotherearof thetowedmachinetoprovidebrakingwhengoingdownhill.
NOTICE
Donotmovethemachinewiththeparkingbrakeapplied.Thebrake willbedamaged.Thebrakewillapplyifairpressuredropsbelow380 kPa(55psi).
Inspectthebrakesbeforeoperatingthemachine,ifitwasmovedwith thebrakesapplied.
Thesetowinginstructionsareforemergenciesonly.Alwayshaulthemachineiflongdistances mustbetraveled.
1.Keepthetowlinestraight.Donotexceeda30°anglefromstraightaheadposition.
2.Inspectthetowlinebeforetakinguptheslack.Refastenthelineifnecessary.
3.Afterattachingthelinesecurely,movethetowingvehicleslowlytotakeuptheslack.
WiththeEngineRunning
Themachinemaybepulledoutofthemudortothesideofthehaulroad,ifthepowertrainand steeringsystemsareoperable.Theoperatoronthetowedvehiclemuststeerinthedirectionofthe towline.
IftransmissionorDrivelineFailureisSuspected:
1.Removethetorqueconvertertotransmissiondriveshaft.
2.Removethetractoraxleshafts.
3.Theenginecanthenbeoperatedtoprovidesteering,brakesandscraperhydraulics.
WiththeEngineStopped
Blockthewheelswhenreleasingthebrakesorwhenparkingthe machinewiththebrakesreleased.
1.Blockthewheels.
2.Draintheairsystem.
3.Useanexternalairsourcetoprovideairtoreleasetheparkingbrake.ConsultyourCaterpillar dealerforthecorrectprocedure.
4.Withtheparkingbrakereleased,disconnecttheoperatingrodlinkage.
Donotallowridersonamachinethatisbeingtowed.
5.ReversethehosesonONESTEERINGCYLINDERONLY.Thiswillallowthesteering cylinderstomovefreely.
NOTICE
Besuretoconnectthesteeringhosesproperlyaftertowing,withthe hosesreversed,orthesteeringwillnotfunction.
6.Removebothtractoraxleshafts.
7.Towthemachineinreverseonlyifthebowlislowered.
8.Fastenanothermachinetothereartoprovidebrakingwhengoingdownhill.
9.Blockthewheelswhenthemachineisstoppedandthebrakesarereleased.
NOTE:Toprovidesteeringoilpressureformachinesequippedwithsupplementalsteering,donot removetheaxleshafts.Removeonlythetransmissiontodifferentialdriveshaft.
Donotreversethesteeringhoses.

2.Watchallgaugesandindicatorsforcorrectreadings.
NOTICE
Stoptheengineandaddoilifthetransmissionlevelislow.
Operatetheengineatlowidlewhencheckingthetransmissionoillevel.
3.MaintainthetransmissionoillevelbetweentheADDandFULLmarksonthedipstick.
4.Iftheredbandintheindicatorisvisible,stoptheengineandhavetheaircleanerserviced.
5.Operatetheengineatlowidleuntilthehydraulicoiliswarm.
6.Testthehydrauliccontrols.Allowextrawarm-uptimeiftheresponseissluggish.

BeforeStartingtheEngine
Walk-AroundInspection
Foroperatingpersonnelsafety,topreventfires,andtoensuremaximumservicelifeofthe machine,makeathoroughwalk-aroundinspectionbeforemountingthemachine.Lookunderand aroundthemachineforsuchitemsaslooseormissingbolts,trashbuild-upandoil,fuel,orcoolant leaks,conditionandinflationoftires,conditionofcuttingedgesandelevatorflights.
OperatorChecks
1.Checktheenginecrankcaseoillevel.ThelevelshouldbebetweentheADDandFULLmarks onthedipstick.
2.Maintaintheenginecoolantleveltowithin1cm(1/2inch)ofthebottomofthefillpipe.
3.Drainthewaterfromthewaterseparator.Opendrainvalve(1)andventvalve(2).Allowthe watertodrain.Closethevalves.
4.Openthethreeairtankdrainvalves.Allowmoistureandsedimenttodrain.Closethevalves.
5.Iftheredbandintheindicatorisvisible,havetheaircleanerserviced.
6.Whenthedustlevelreachesthefullmarkintheairintakeprecleaner,removeandemptyit.
7.Transmissionoilshouldshowonthedipstick.Addoilifnecessary.
8.Checkthehydraulicoillevelwiththebowllowered.ThelevelmustbeabovetheADDmarkon thesightgauge,oronthedipstickinthefillopening.
9.Visuallycheckthetiresforcuts,gougesandproperinflation.
Improperlyinflatedtirescancauseexcessiveheatbuildup,resultingin blowouts.
NOTICE
Overorunderinflatedtirescancauseexcessiveoruneventirewear,or rimdamage.
Keepthevalvecapsontopreventdirtfromenteringthevalvestems. Otherwisevalvedamagecanoccur.
Consultyourtiredealerforthecorrectoperatingtirepressureforyouroperatingconditions.
Measurethetirepressureifatireappearsimproperlyinflated.Checkthetirepressurecold,at outsideoperatingtemperature.
Useaselfattachingairchuckandstandbehindthetreadofthetire wheninflating.
Wheninflatingtiresinaheatedarea,makeallowancesinpressureforcoldoutsidetemperatures. ConsulttheCOLDWEATHEROPERATION,LUBRICATION&MAINTENANCEGUIDE, CaterpillarFormNo.SEBU5338.
Haveyourtiredealerinspecttireswithdeepcutsorgouges.
10.Drainthemoistureandsedimentfromthefueltank.
11.Thefueltankshouldbefullatthebeginningofeachshift.

Controls
Tractor
(1)Start-RunSwitchTurntheswitchtotheright(START)tocranktheengine.Releasethe switchwhentheenginestarts.Itwillreturntothe(RUN)position.
Turntheswitchtothelefttostoptheengine.
(2)BatteryDisconnectSwitchDisconnectsallelectricalcomponentsfromthepowersource. Insertthekeyandturntheswitchtotheright(ON),toactivatetheelectricalsystem.
Turnthedisconnectswitchtotheleft(OFF),andremovethekey,whenparkingthemachine.This willpreventbatterydrain.
(3)StartingAidButtonForaidinstartingbelow0°C(32°F),pushthebuttontoinjectametered amountofstartingfluid(ether)intotheintakemanifold.
Thebuttonmustbereleasedandpushedagainifmorestartingfluidisrequired.

InjectetherONLYwhilecrankingtheengine.Useethersparingly, excessiveethercancausepistonandringdamage.Useetherforcold startingpurposesonly.
(1)ServiceBrakesPushthepedaldowntoapplythebrakesandstopthemachine.
Releasethepedaltoreleasethebrakes.
(2)EmergencyBrakePulloutthebuttontoapplythebrakeandstopthemachineiftheservice brakesfail.
Theemergencybrakewillapplyautomaticallyifairpressuredropsbelowthesafeoperating pressure.
Toreleasethebrake,theairpressuregaugemustreadintheGREENrange.Pushthebuttonin.
Thebuttonmuststayintokeepthebrakereleased.
Pullthebuttonouttoapplytheparkingbrake.
(1)ParkingBrakeToreleasethebrake,theairpressuremustreadintheGREENrange.Pushthe buttonin.
Thebuttonmuststayintokeepthebrakereleased.
(2)AcceleratorPushdowntheacceleratortoincreasetheenginespeed.
Releasethepedaltoslowtheenginespeed.
TransmissionRangeSelector
(1)ForwardTomoveforward,movethelevertotherightoftheconsole,tooneoffourforward speeds.
(2)NeutralMovethelevertothefrontoftheconsoletoshiftthetransmissiontoneutral.
(3)ReverseTomoveinreverse,movethelevertotheleftoftheconsoletooneofthetworeverse speeds.
(1)TransmissionNeutralLock
TolockthetransmissioninNEUTRAL,shiftthetransmissiontoNEUTRAL.Pushinthelock leverandmoveitforwardtoLOCK.
Thiswillpreventaccidentaltransmissionengagement. Tomovetheshiftlever,pushthelockleverinandmoveittothereartoOFF.
(2)DifferentialLockDepressthepedalwiththeleftfoottolockthedifferential.
Releasethepedaltounlockthedifferential.Turningslightly,ordecreasingspeedslightly,maybe necessarytoaidinunlockingthedifferential.

Movingthemachine
Besurenooneisworkingonornearthemachine.
1.AdjusttheseatasshownintheSafetysection.
2.Fastentheseatbelt.
NOTICE
Theairpressuremustbeinthenormalrange.
Donotmovethemachinewiththeparkingoremergencybrake engaged.Brakedamagewilloccur.
3.Applytheservicebrake.
4.Pushtheemergencyandparkingbrakebuttonsintoreleasethebrakesystems.Besureboth buttonsstayin.
5.Raisethescraperbowljusthighenoughtoclearobstacles.
6.Releasethetransmissionlocklever.Movethetransmissioncontroltofirstspeed.
NOTE:TheenginecanbestartedwiththetransmissioninotherthanNEUTRAL.Shouldthis happen,itisnecessarytomovethetransmissioncontroltoNEUTRAL,thentothecorrectspeed.
7.Releasethebrakepedal.Pushtheacceleratordown.
8.Movethemachinetoanopenarea.Operateallthehydrauliccontrols,thebrakes,andthe steeringtocheckforproperfunction.
9.Stopthemachine.Movethetransmissioncontroltoreverse.Thiswillchecktheoperationofthe back-upalarm.
EmergencyStops
Stopthemachineimmediatelyifthelowairpressurewarninghorn sounds.Theremaybeamalfunctionoftheairbrakesystem.
Afteranemergencystop,besuretheairpressureisintheoperating rangebeforemovingthemachine.
Themachinehastwoairreservoirs.Oneisfornormaloperation.Theotherisfortheemergency airbrakesystem.
Theemergencybrakewillapplyautomaticallyifregularairpressuredropsbelowasafelevel. Applytheparkingbrakewhenthemachinestops.
Theemergencybrakewillreleaseduetolossofairpressureintheemergencybrakeairreservoir afteraperiodoftime.
Pullthebuttontoapplytheemergencybrakeiftheservicebrakesfail.
ChangingSpeedandDirection
Improperdownshiftingcancauseasuddenreductionintravelspeedor engineoverspeed.
Nevercoastonadowngrade.Keepthetransmissionengaged.
NOTICE
Neverdownshiftwiththeenginespeedover1800rpm.Downshiftonly onespeedatatime.
Themachinemustbestoppedandtheenginerunningatlowidlewhen changingdirection.
Allshiftinginforwardandreverseismanual.Upshifttoincreasetravelspeed,butavoidlugging theengine.Keepenginerpmhigh.
Whenapproachingdowngrades,andwhenenteringturnsorthecut,usetheservicebrakestoslow themachineenoughtopermitsafedownshifting.
Usefirstspeedforloading.
NOTICE
Lowenginerpmcanresultininsufficientflowofoiltothesteering cylinders,resultinginslowsteeringresponse.
Usethehighestpracticalspeed,forconditionsonthehaulroad,orwhendumpingandspreading.
DifferentialLock
Donotattempttoturnthemachinewiththedifferentiallockapplied.
Inpoorfooting,whenloadingorhauling,engagethedifferentiallocktopreventonewheelfrom spinning.
NOTICE
Donotengagethedifferentiallockwithonewheelspinning.Damage canoccur.
Unlockthedifferentialbeforeturningthemachine.Releasethepedalanddecreaseenginerpm momentarilyorturnthemachineslightlytoaidinunlockingthedifferential.
