Maintenance
Themaintenancesectionisaguidetoequipmentcare.TheMaintenanceIntervalSchedule(MIS)liststhe itemstobemaintainedataspecificserviceinterval.Itemswithoutspecificintervalsarelistedunderthe "WhenRequired"serviceinterval.TheMaintenanceIntervalScheduleliststhepagenumberforthestep-bystepinstructionsrequiredtoaccomplishthescheduledmaintenance.UsetheMaintenanceIntervalSchedule asanindexor"onesafesource"forallmaintenanceprocedures.
MaintenanceIntervals
Usetheservicehourmetertodetermineservicingintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily,weekly, monthly,etc.)canbeusedinsteadofservicehourmeterintervalsiftheyprovidemoreconvenientservicing schedulesandapproximatetheindicatedservicehourmeterreading.Recommendedserviceshouldalwaysbe performedattheintervalthatoccursfirst.
Underextremelysevere,dustyorwetoperatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationthanisspecifiedinthe maintenanceintervalschartmightbenecessary.
Performserviceonitemsatmultiplesoftheoriginalrequirement.Forexample,atevery500servicehoursor 3months,alsoservicethoseitemslistedunderevery250servicehoursormonthlyandevery10service hoursordaily.

DieselengineexhaustandsomeofitsconstituentsareknowntotheStateofCaliforniatocausecancer,birth defects,andotherreproductiveharm.
Batteryposts,terminalsandrelatedaccessoriescontainleadandleadcompounds.Washhandsafter handling.
CertifiedEngineMaintenance
Propermaintenanceandrepairisessentialtokeeptheengineandmachinesystemsoperatingcorrectly.As theheavydutyoff-roaddieselengineowner,youareresponsiblefortheperformanceoftherequired maintenancelistedintheOwnerManual,OperationandMaintenanceManual,andServiceManual.
Itisprohibitedforanypersonengagedinthebusinessofrepairing,servicing,selling,leasing,ortrading enginesormachinestoremove,alter,orrenderinoperativeanyemissionrelateddeviceorelementofdesign installedonorinanengineormachinethatisincompliancewiththeregulations(40CFRPart89).Certain elementsofthemachineandenginesuchastheexhaustsystem,fuelsystem,electricalsystem,intakeair systemandcoolingsystemmaybeemissionrelatedandshouldnotbealteredunlessapprovedbyCaterpillar.
MachineCapacity
Additionalattachmentsormodificationsmayexceedmachinedesigncapacitywhichcanadverselyaffect performancecharacteristics.Includedwouldbestabilityandsystemcertificationssuchasbrakes,steering, androlloverprotectivestructures(ROPS).ContactyourCatdealerforfurtherinformation.
CatProductIdentificationNumber
EffectiveFirstQuarter2001theCatProductIdentificationNumber(PIN)haschangedfrom8to17 characters.Inanefforttoprovideuniformequipmentidentification,Caterpillarandotherconstruction equipmentmanufacturersaremovingtocomplywiththelatestversionoftheproductidentification numberingstandard.Non-roadmachinePINsaredefinedbyISO10261.ThenewPINformatwillapplyto allCatmachinesandgeneratorsets.ThePINplatesandframemarkingwilldisplaythe17characterPIN. Thenewformatwilllooklikethefollowing:
1.Caterpillar'sWorldManufacturingCode(characters1-3)
2.MachineDescriptor(characters4-8)
3.CheckCharacter(character9)
4.MachineIndicatorSection(MIS)orProductSequenceNumber(characters10-17).Thesewerepreviously referredtoastheSerialNumber.
MachinesandgeneratorsetsproducedbeforeFirstQuarter2001willmaintaintheir8characterPINformat.
Componentssuchasengines,transmissions,axles,etc.andworktoolswillcontinuetousean8character SerialNumber(S/N).

Checktheareaaroundthemachine.Makesurethatthemachineisclearofpersonnelandclearof obstacles.
Testthebrakesonadry,levelsurface.
Fastentheseatbeltbeforeyoutestthebrakes.
Thefollowingtestisusedtodetermineiftheservicebrakeisfunctional.Thistestisnotintended tomeasurethemaximumbrakeholdingeffort.Thebrakeholdingeffortthatisrequiredtosustain amachineataspecificenginerpmvariesdependingonthemachine.Thevariationsarethe differencesintheenginesetting,inthepowertrainefficiency,andinthebrakeholdingability,etc.
1.Starttheengine.Raisethebucketslightly.
2.Applytheservicebrake.Releasetheparkingbrake.
3.Formachineswithanautoshifttransmission,movethetransmissioncontrolleverto FOURTHSPEEDFORWARDandplacetheautoshiftcontrolswitchinmanualmode.For machineswithamanualtransmission,movethetransmissioncontrollevertoTHIRD SPEEDFORWARD.
4.Graduallyincreasetheenginespeedtohighidle.Themachineshouldnotmove.
Ifthemachinebeginstomove,reducetheenginespeedimmediatelyand engagetheparkingbrake.

5.Reducetheenginespeedtolowidle.MovethetransmissiontoNEUTRAL.Engagethe parkingbrake.Lowerthebuckettotheground.Stoptheengine.
NOTICE
Ifthemachinemovedwhiletestingthebrakes,contactyour Caterpillardealer.Havethedealerinspectand,ifnecessary,repairthe servicebrakebeforereturningthemachinetooperation.
SecondaryBrakeHoldingAbilityTest
Checktheareaaroundthemachine.Makesurethatthemachineisclearofpersonnelandclearof obstacles.
Testthebrakesonadry,levelsurface.
Fastentheseatbeltbeforeyoutestthebrakes.
Thefollowingtestsareusedtodetermineiftheparkingbrakeisfunctional.Thesetestsarenot intendedtomeasurethemaximumbrakeholdingeffort.Thebrakeholdingeffortthatisrequired tosustainamachineataspecificenginerpmvariesdependingonthemachine.Thevariationsare thedifferencesintheenginesetting,inthepowertrainefficiency,andinthebrakeholdingability, etc.
1.Starttheengine.Raisethebucketslightly.
2.Engagetheparkingbrake.
3.Withtheparkingbrakeapplied,movethetransmissioncontrollevertotheFORWARD position.Withtheparkingbrakeapplied,movethetransmissioncontrollevertothe REVERSEposition.
Note:Theparkingbrakeindicatorlightshouldcomeonandtheparkingbrakealarmshould soundifmachinegroundspeedisabove6km/h(3.7mph)withthesecondarybrakestill engaged.
Note:Yourmachineisequippedwithafeaturedcalledparkbrakedrivethrough.Withthe parkingbrakeapplied,movethetransmissioncontrollevertoFORWARDthento NEUTRALandbacktoFORWARD,thengraduallyincreaseenginespeedandthemachine willmove.Parkingbrakedrivethroughcanalsobedonebymovingthetransmission controllevertoREVERSEthentoNEUTRALandbacktoREVERSE,thengradually increaseenginespeedandthemachinewillmove.
4.Graduallyincreasetheenginespeedtohighidle.Themachineshouldnotmove.
Ifthemachinebeginstomove,reducetheenginespeedimmediatelyand applytheservicebrakepedal.
5.Reducetheenginespeed.MovethetransmissiontoNEUTRAL.Lowerthebuckettothe ground.Stoptheengine.
NOTICE
Ifthemachinemovedwhiletestingthebrakes,contactyour Caterpillardealer.
Havethedealerinspectand,ifnecessary,repairtheparkingbrakes beforereturningthemachinetooperation.

7.Installthebolts.Tightentheboltstothespecifiedtorque.

10.Afterafewhoursofoperation,checktheboltsforpropertorque.
