Hydraulic System Pressure - Release

SMCS - 3000-553-PX; 4250-553-PX; 4300-553-PX; 5050-553-PX; 6700-553-PX

Release Procedure

1. Park on a level surface. If you must park on a grade, chock the machine.

2. Apply the service brake in order to stop the machine. Move the transmission control lever to the NEUTRAL position.

3. Move the speed control lever to the LOW IDLE position.

4. Engage the parking brake.

5. Engage the transmission neutral lock.

6. Lower all attachments to the ground.

7. Stop the engine.

8. Turn the engine start switch key to OFF position for 4 seconds.

9. Turn the engine start switch key back to ON position.

10. Press the hydraulic shutoff switch to the ON position.

11. Move the hydraulic control levers back and forth in order to relieve hydraulic pressure.

12. Move the hydraulic control levers to the HOLD position.

Hood - Remove and Install

SMCS - 7251-010

Removal Procedure

Start By:

A. Remove the engine covers. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Cover - Remove and Install".

1. Open the hood and remove bolts (1). Remove the left side of the hood.

2. Remove bolt (2) from the rear of the right side of the hood.

4. Remove bolts (4) from the right side of the hood. Remove the right side of the hood.

Installation Procedure

1. Install the right side of the hood. Install bolts (4) .

Engine Cover - Remove and Install

Removal Procedure

Start By:

A. Release the pressure in the hydraulic system. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Hydraulic System Pressure - Release".

Muffler - Remove and Install

Electric Starting Motor - Remove and Install

SMCS - 1453-010

Removal Procedure

Start By:

A. Remove the right engine panel. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, RENR3573, "Engine Cover - Remove and Install".

Note: Put identification tags on all wires for installation purposes.

1. Disconnect the batteries.

2. Remove wire (1) from starter (2) .

3. Remove wire (3) and wire (4) from the starter.

Fan Guard - Remove and Install

Removal Procedure

Start By:

A. Remove the engine cover. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, RENR3573, "Engine Cover - Remove and Install".

Refrigerant Compressor - Remove and Install

SMCS - 1802-010

Removal Procedure

Start By:

A. Evacuate the air conditioning system. Refer to Service Manual, SENR5664-05, "Air Conditioning and Heating Systems with R-134a Refrigerant".

B. Release the pressure in the hydraulic system. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Hydraulic System Pressure - Release".

Personal injury can result from contact with refrigerant.

Contact with refrigerant can cause frost bite. Keep face and hands away to help prevent injury.

Protective goggles must always be worn when refrigerant lines are opened, even if the gauges indicate the system is empty of refrigerant.

Always use precaution when a fitting is removed. Slowly loosen the fitting. If the system is still under pressure, release it slowly in a well ventilated area.

Personal injury or death can result from inhaling refrigerant through a lit cigarette.

Inhaling air conditioner refrigerant gas through a lit cigarette or other smoking method or inhaling fumes released from a flame contacting air conditioner refrigerant gas, can cause bodily harm or death.

Do not smoke when servicing air conditioners or wherever refrigerant gas may be present.

Use a certified recovery and recycling cart to properly remove the refrigerant from the air conditioning system.

NOTICE

Effective July 1, 1992 regulations prohibit the venting of any refrigerant into the atmosphere. Refer to Caterpillar publications Service Manuals, SENR3334, SENR5664, and NEDG5065 for the proper procedure, the proper equipment, and the proper tools needed in order to reclaim refrigerant from any Caterpillar equipment.

1. Disconnect wiring harness (3) .

2. Loosen nuts (1) .

3. Position the fan drive belt out of the way.

4. Disconnect refrigerant lines (2) .

5. Remove two bolts (1) .

6. Remove compressor (4) .

1. Install compressor (4) .

2. Install two bolts (1) .

3. Connect refrigerant lines (2) .

4. Install the fan drive belt.

5. Tighten nuts (1) .

6. Connect wiring harness (3) .

Note: For the proper tightening procedures of the V-belt, refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7399, "V-Belts - Inspect/Adjust/Replace".,

End By: Charge the air conditioning system. Refer to Service ManualSENR5664-05, "Air Conditioning and Heating Systems with R-134a Refrigerant".

Alternator - Remove and Install

SMCS - 1405-010

Removal Procedure

Start By:

A. Remove the left engine panel. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, RENR3573, "Engine Cover - Remove and Install".

Note: Put identification on all wires for installation purposes.

1. Disconnect the batteries.

2. Loosen bolt (1), bolt (2), and bolt (3). Slide the alternator toward the engine and disconnect the alternator V-belts.

3. Disconnect electrical connection (5) and (6) .

4. Remove bolt (1), bolt (2), and bolt (3). Remove the alternator.

Installation Procedure

1. Slide the alternator toward the engine and connect the alternator V-belts. Install the alternator. Install bolt (1), bolt (2), and bolt (3).

2. Connect electrical connection (5) and (6) .

3. Tighten bolt (1), bolt (2), and bolt (3) .

4. Connect the batteries.

Fan - Remove and Install

SMCS - 1356-010; 1356-011; 1356-012

Removal Procedure

Start By:

A. Remove the fan guard. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, RENR3573, "Fan GuardRemove and Install".

At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure.

Steam can cause personal injury.

Check the coolant level only after the engine has been stopped and the fill cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

Remove the fill cap slowly to relieve pressure.

Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with the skin and eyes to prevent personal injury.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
