Note:Theparkingbrakecanalsobereferredtoasthesecondarybrake.Theparkingbrakeis referredtoasthesecondarybrakewhenusedinastoppingapplication.Theparkingbrakeis referredtoastheparkingbrakewhenusedinaholdingapplication.

Note:Theseatmustbefacingforwardtocompletethecheckandadjustmentprocedure.

CheckProcedure

Checktheareaaroundthemachine.Makesurethatthemachineisclearofpersonnelandclearof obstacles.

Checkthebrakesonadry,levelsurface.

Fastentheseatbeltbeforeyoucheckthebrakes.

Thefollowingcheckisusedtodetermineiftheparkingbrakeisfunctional.Thischeckisnot intendedtomeasurethemaximumbrakeholdingeffort.Thebrakeholdingeffortthatisrequired tosustainamachineataspecificenginerpmvariesdependingonthemachine.Thevariationsare thedifferencesintheenginesetting,inthepowertrainefficiency,andinthebrakeholdingability, etc.

1.Starttheengine.Raisethebucketslightly.

2.Engagetheparkingbrake.

3.Ifthemachineisequippedwiththedirectdrivetransmission,movethetransmissionspeed shiftlevertoTHIRDgear.MovethetransmissiondirectioncontrollevertoFORWARD,to NEUTRAL,andbacktoFORWARD.Ifthemachineisequippedwithapowershift transmissionmovethetransmissioncontrollevertoTHIRDSPEEDFORWARD,to NEUTRAL,andbacktoTHIRDSPEEDFORWARD.Thisisdoneinordertooverridethe transmissionneutralizerforthistest.

Note:Placemachinesthatareequippedwithallwheeldriveintotwo-wheeldrivemode.

Note:Theparkingbrakeindicatorlightshouldcomeonandtheparkingbrakealarmshould sound.

4.Graduallyincreasetheenginespeedto2000rpm.Themachineshouldnotmove.

Ifthemachinebeginstomove,reducetheenginespeedimmediatelyand applytheservicebrakepedal.

5.Reducetheenginespeed.MovethetransmissiontoNEUTRAL.Lowerthebuckettothe ground.Stoptheengine.

AdjustmentProcedure

Ifthemachinemovedduringthetest,performthefollowingprocedureinordertoadjustthe parkingbrake.

1.Applytheservicebrakes.

2.Disengagetheparkingbrake.

3.Asyouviewtheparkingbrakeadjusterknobfromtheoperatorseat,turntheknob clockwiseforonehalfofaturn.

4.Starttheengine.Raisethebucketslightly.

5.Engagetheparkingbrake.

6.Ifthemachineisequippedwiththedirectdrivetransmission,movethetransmissionspeed controltoTHIRDgear.MovethetransmissiondirectioncontroltotheFORWARD,tothe NEUTRALpositionandbacktotheFORWARDposition.Ifthemachineisequippedwitha powershifttransmission,movethetransmissionspeedcontroltotheTHIRDSPEED FORWARDposition,totheNEUTRALpositionandbacktotheTHIRDSPEED FORWARDposition.Thisisdoneinordertooverridethetransmissionneutralizer.

7.Graduallyincreasetheenginespeedtohighidle.Themachineshouldnotmove.

8.Reducetheenginespeed.MovethetransmissiondirectioncontroltotheNEUTRAL position.Lowerthebuckettotheground.

9.Stoptheengine.

Ifthemachinemovesduringtheparkingbraketest,thenperformtheadjustmentprocedureagain. Ifyourunoutofadjustmentontheparkingbrakeadjusterknob,refertoSystemsOperation, TestingandAdjusting,"ParkingBrakeControl-Adjust"foryourmachine.

Useafiltercuttertocutthefilterelementopen.Spreadapartthepleatsandinspecttheelementfor metalandforotherdebris.Anexcessiveamountofdebrisinthefilterelementcanindicatea possiblefailure.

Ifmetalsarefoundinthefilterelement,amagnetcanbeusedtodifferentiatebetweenferrous metalsandnonferrousmetals.

Ferrousmetalscanindicatewearonsteelpartsandoncastironparts.

Nonferrousmetalscanindicatewearonthealuminumpartsoftheenginesuchasmainbearings, rodbearings,orturbochargerbearings.

Smallamountsofdebrismaybefoundinthefilterelement.Thiscouldbecausedbyfrictionand bynormalwear.ConsultyourCaterpillardealerinordertoarrangeforfurtheranalysisifan excessiveamountofdebrisisfound.

UsinganoilfilterelementthatisnotrecommendedbyCaterpillarcanresultinsevereengine damagetoenginebearings,tothecrankshaft,andtootherparts.Thiscanresultinlargerparticles inunfilteredoil.Theparticlescouldenterthelubricatingsystemandtheparticlescouldcause damage.

Contactwithrefrigerantcancausefrostbite.Keepfaceand handsawaytohelppreventinjury.

Protectivegogglesmustalwaysbewornwhenrefrigerantlines areopened,evenifthegaugesindicatethesystemisemptyof refrigerant.

Alwaysuseprecautionwhenafittingisremoved.Slowlyloosen thefitting.Ifthesystemisstillunderpressure,releaseitslowly inawellventilatedarea.

Personalinjuryordeathcanresultfrominhalingrefrigerant throughalitcigarette.

Inhalingairconditionerrefrigerantgasthroughalitcigaretteor othersmokingmethodorinhalingfumesreleasedfromaflame contactingairconditionerrefrigerantgas,cancausebodily harmordeath.

Donotsmokewhenservicingairconditionersorwherever refrigerantgasmaybepresent.

Useacertifiedrecoveryandrecyclingcarttoproperlyremove therefrigerantfromtheairconditioningsystem.

NOTICE

Iftherefrigerantsystemhasbeenopentotheoutsideair (withoutbeingplugged)formorethan30minutes,thereceiverdryermustbereplaced.Moisturewillenteranopenrefrigerant systemandcausecorrosionwhichwillleadtocomponent failure.
