Maintenance

Themaintenancesectionisaguidetoequipmentcare.TheMaintenanceIntervalSchedule(MIS) liststheitemstobemaintainedataspecificserviceinterval.Itemswithoutspecificintervalsare listedunderthe"WhenRequired"serviceinterval.TheMaintenanceIntervalScheduleliststhe pagenumberforthestep-by-stepinstructionsrequiredtoaccomplishthescheduledmaintenance. UsetheMaintenanceIntervalScheduleasanindexor"onesafesource"forallmaintenance procedures.

MaintenanceIntervals

Usetheservicehourmetertodetermineservicingintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily, weekly,monthly,etc.)canbeusedinsteadofservicehourmeterintervalsifthecalendarintervals

providemoreconvenientservicingschedulesandapproximatetheindicatedservicehourmeter reading.Performtherecommendedserviceattheintervalthatoccursfirst.

Undersevere,dusty,orwetoperatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationthanisspecifiedinthe maintenanceintervalschartmightbenecessary.

Performserviceonitemsatmultiplesoftheoriginalrequirement.Forexample,atevery500 servicehoursor3months,alsoservicethoseitemslistedunderevery250servicehoursor monthlyandevery10servicehoursordaily.

CertifiedEngineMaintenance

Propermaintenanceandrepairareessentialtokeeptheengineandmachinesystemsoperating correctly.Astheheavy-dutyoff-roaddieselengineowner,youareresponsibleforthe performanceoftherequiredmaintenancelistedintheOwnerManual,OperationandMaintenance Manual,andServiceManual.

Itisprohibitedforanypersonengagedinthebusinessofrepairing,servicing,selling,leasing,or tradingenginesormachinestoremove,alter,ortorenderinoperative,anyemission-relateddevice orelementofdesigninstalledonorinanengineormachinethatisincompliancewithall applicableregulationsoftheintendedcountrytowhichithasbeenshipped.Certainelementsof themachineandenginesuchastheexhaustsystem,fuelsystem,electricalsystem,intakeair system,andcoolingsystemmaybeemission-relatedandshouldnotbealteredunlessapprovedby Caterpillar.

MachineCapacity

Additionalattachmentsormodificationsmayexceedmachinedesigncapacitywhichcan adverselyaffectperformancecharacteristics.Includedwouldbestabilityandsystemcertifications suchasbrakes,steering,androlloverprotectivestructures(ROPS).ContactyourCatdealerfor furtherinformation.

ProductIdentificationNumber

EffectiveFirstQuarter2001theProductIdentificationNumber(PIN)haschangedfrom8to17 characters.Toprovideuniformequipmentidentification,constructionequipmentmanufacturers aremovingtocomplywiththelatestversionoftheproductidentificationnumberingstandard. Non-roadmachinePINsaredefinedbyISO10261.ThenewPINformatwillapplytoall machinesandgeneratorsets.ThePINplatesandframemarkingwilldisplaythe17characterPIN. Thenewformatwilllooklikethefollowing:

Clearallpersonnelfromthemachineandfromthearea.

Clearallobstaclesfromthemachine'spath.Bewareofhazards(wires,ditches,etc).

Besurethatallwindowsareclean.Securethedoorsandthewindowsintheopenpositionorin theshutposition.

Adjusttherearviewmirrors(ifequipped)forthebestvisibilityclosetothemachine.Makesure thatthehorn,thetravelalarm(ifequipped),andallotherwarningdevicesareworkingproperly.

Fastentheseatbeltsecurely.

Warmuptheengineandthehydraulicoilbeforeoperatingthemachine.

Starttheengineonlyfromtheoperatorcompartment.Nevershortacrossthestarterterminalsor acrossthebatteries.Shortingcoulddamagetheelectricalsystembybypassingtheengineneutral startsystem.

Inspecttheconditionoftheseatbeltandofthemountinghardware.Replaceanypartsthatare wornordamaged.Regardlessofappearance,replacetheseatbeltafterthreeyearsofuse.Donot useaseatbeltextensiononaretractableseatbelt.

Adjusttheseatsothatfullpedaltravelcanbeachievedwiththeoperator'sbackagainsttheback oftheseat.

Makesurethatthemachineisequippedwithalightingsystemthatisadequateforthejob conditions.Makesurethatallmachinelightsareworkingproperly.

BurnPrevention

SMCS-7000

Donottouchanypartofanoperatingengine.Allowmachinesystemstocoolbeforeany maintenanceisperformed.Relieveallpressureintheairsystem,intheoilsystem,inthe lubricationsystem,inthefuelsystem,orinthecoolingsystembeforeanylines,fittings,orrelated itemsaredisconnected.

InductionSystem

SulfuricAcidBurnHazardmaycauseseriouspersonalinjuryordeath.

Theexhaustgascoolermaycontainasmallamountofsulfuricacid.The useoffuelwithsulfurlevelsgreaterthan15ppmmayincreasethe amountofsulfuricacidformed.Thesulfuricacidmayspillfromthe coolerduringserviceoftheengine.Thesulfuricacidwillburntheeyes, skinandclothingoncontact.Alwaysweartheappropriatepersonal protectiveequipment(PPE)thatisnotedonamaterialsafetydatasheet (MSDS)forsulfuricacid.Alwaysfollowthedirectionsforfirstaidthat arenotedonamaterialsafetydatasheet(MSDS)forsulfuricacid.

Coolant

Whentheengineisatoperatingtemperature,theenginecoolantishot.Thecoolantisalsounder pressure.Theradiatorandalllinestotheheatersortotheenginecontainhotcoolant.

Anycontactwithhotcoolantorwithsteamcancausesevereburns.Allowcoolingsystem componentstocoolbeforethecoolingsystemisdrained.

Checkthecoolantlevelonlyaftertheenginehasbeenstopped.

Ensurethatthefillercapiscoolbeforeremovingthefillercap.Thefillercapmustbecoolenough totouchwithabarehand.Removethefillercapslowlytorelievepressure.

Coolingsystemconditionercontainsalkali.Alkalicancausepersonalinjury.Donotallowalkali tocontacttheskin,theeyes,orthemouth.

Oils

Hotoilandhotcomponentscancausepersonalinjury.Donotallowhotoiltocontacttheskin. Also,donotallowhotcomponentstocontacttheskin.

Removethehydraulictankfillercaponlyaftertheenginehasbeenstopped.Thefillercapmustbe coolenoughtotouchwithabarehand.Followthestandardprocedureinthismanualtoremove thehydraulictankfillercap.

Batteries

Theliquidinabatteryisanelectrolyte.Electrolyteisanacidthatcancausepersonalinjury.Do notallowelectrolytetocontacttheskinortheeyes.

Donotsmokewhilecheckingthebatteryelectrolytelevels.Batteriesgiveoffflammablefumes whichcanexplode.

Alwayswearprotectiveglasseswhenyouworkwithbatteries.Washhandsaftertouching batteries.Theuseofglovesisrecommended.

CrushingPreventionandCuttingPrevention

Supporttheequipmentproperlybeforeyouperformanyworkormaintenancebeneaththat equipment.Donotdependonthehydrauliccylinderstoholduptheequipment.Equipmentcan fallifacontrolismoved,orifahydrauliclinebreaks.

Donotworkbeneaththecabofthemachineunlessthecabisproperlysupported.

Unlessyouareinstructedotherwise,neverattemptadjustmentswhilethemachineismovingor whiletheengineisrunning.

Neverjumpacrossthestartersolenoidterminalsinordertostarttheengine.Unexpectedmachine movementcouldresult.

Wheneverthereareequipmentcontrollinkagestheclearanceinthelinkageareawillchangewith themovementoftheequipmentorthemachine.Stayclearofareasthatmayhaveasuddenchange inclearancewithmachinemovementorequipmentmovement.

Stayclearofallrotatingandmovingparts.

Ifitisnecessarytoremoveguardsinordertoperformmaintenance,alwaysinstalltheguardsafter themaintenanceisperformed.

Keepobjectsawayfrommovingfanblades.Thefanbladewillthrowobjectsorcutobjects.

Donotuseakinkedwirecableorafrayedwirecable.Weargloveswhenyouhandlewirecable.

Whenyoustrikearetainerpinwithforce,theretainerpincanflyout.Thelooseretainerpincan injurepersonnel.Makesurethattheareaisclearofpeoplewhenyoustrikearetainerpin.To avoidinjurytoyoureyes,wearprotectiveglasseswhenyoustrikearetainerpin.

Chipsorotherdebriscanflyoffanobjectwhenyoustriketheobject.Makesurethatnoonecan beinjuredbyflyingdebrisbeforestrikinganyobject.
