Safety

Thesafetysectionlistsbasicsafetyprecautions.Inaddition,thissectionidentifiesthetextand locationsofwarningsignsandlabelsusedonthemachine.

Readandunderstandthebasicprecautionslistedinthesafetysectionbeforeoperatingorperforming lubrication,maintenance,andrepaironthismachine.

Operation

Theoperationsectionisareferenceforthenewoperatorandarefresherfortheexperiencedoperator. Thissectionincludesadiscussionofgauges,switches,machinecontrols,attachmentcontrols, transportation,andtowinginformation.

Photographsandillustrationsguidetheoperatorthroughcorrectproceduresofchecking,starting, operating,andstoppingthemachine.

Operatingtechniquesoutlinedinthispublicationarebasic.Skillandtechniquesdevelopasthe operatorgainsknowledgeofthemachineanditscapabilities.

Maintenance

Themaintenancesectionisaguidetoequipmentcare.TheMaintenanceIntervalSchedule(MIS)lists theitemstobemaintainedataspecificserviceinterval.Itemswithoutspecificintervalsarelisted underthe"WhenRequired"serviceinterval.TheMaintenanceIntervalScheduleliststhepage numberforthestep-by-stepinstructionsrequiredtoaccomplishthescheduledmaintenance.Usethe MaintenanceIntervalScheduleasanindexor"onesafesource"forallmaintenanceprocedures.

MaintenanceIntervals

Usetheservicehourmetertodetermineservicingintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily,weekly, monthly,etc.)canbeusedinsteadofservicehourmeterintervalsifthecalendarintervalsprovide moreconvenientservicingschedulesandapproximatetheindicatedservicehourmeterreading. Performtherecommendedserviceattheintervalthatoccursfirst.

Undersevere,dusty,orwetoperatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationthanisspecifiedinthe maintenanceintervalschartmightbenecessary.

Performserviceonitemsatmultiplesoftheoriginalrequirement.Forexample,atevery500service hoursor3months,alsoservicethoseitemslistedunderevery250servicehoursormonthlyandevery 10servicehoursordaily.

CertifiedEngineMaintenance

Propermaintenanceandrepairareessentialtokeeptheengineandmachinesystemsoperating correctly.Astheheavy-dutyoff-roaddieselengineowner,youareresponsiblefortheperformanceof therequiredmaintenancelistedintheOwnerManual,OperationandMaintenanceManual,and ServiceManual.

Itisprohibitedforanypersonengagedinthebusinessofrepairing,servicing,selling,leasing,or tradingenginesormachinestoremove,alter,ortorenderinoperative,anyemission-relateddeviceor elementofdesigninstalledonorinanengineormachinethatisincompliancewithallapplicable regulationsoftheintendedcountrytowhichithasbeenshipped.Certainelementsofthemachineand enginesuchastheexhaustsystem,fuelsystem,electricalsystem,intakeairsystem,andcooling systemmaybeemission-relatedandshouldnotbealteredunlessapprovedbyCaterpillar.

MachineCapacity

Additionalattachmentsormodificationsmayexceedmachinedesigncapacitywhichcanadversely affectperformancecharacteristics.Includedwouldbestabilityandsystemcertificationssuchas brakes,steering,androlloverprotectivestructures(ROPS).ContactyourCatdealerforfurther information.

ProductIdentificationNumber

EffectiveFirstQuarter2001theProductIdentificationNumber(PIN)haschangedfrom8to17 characters.Toprovideuniformequipmentidentification,constructionequipmentmanufacturersare movingtocomplywiththelatestversionoftheproductidentificationnumberingstandard.Non-road machinePINsaredefinedbyISO10261.ThenewPINformatwillapplytoallmachinesand generatorsets.ThePINplatesandframemarkingwilldisplaythe17characterPIN.Thenewformat willlooklikethefollowing:

Where:

1.WorldManufacturingCode(characters1-3)

2.MachineDescriptor(characters4-8)

3.CheckCharacter(character9)

4.MachineIndicatorSection(MIS)orProductSequenceNumber(characters10-17).Thesewere previouslyreferredtoastheSerialNumber.

MachinesandgeneratorsetsproducedbeforeFirstQuarter2001willmaintaintheir8characterPIN format.

Componentssuchasengines,transmissions,axles,andworktoolswillcontinuetousean8character SerialNumber(S/N).

Whenclosingtheenginehood,onlyoperatethepush-buttonreleaseby hand.

Failuretoremovehandsfromthepush-buttonreleasebeforeclosingthe enginehoodcouldresultinpersonalinjury.

Besuretoremovehandsfromthepush-buttonreleasebeforecompletely closingtheenginehood.

Donotaddpressuretotheenginehoodwhenopen.

Whenclosingtheenginehood,DoNotoperatethepush-buttonrelease byfoot.

Operationofthepush-buttonreleasebyfootcouldresultindamageto thegasspringoftheclosingmechanismand/orpersonalinjury.

Onlyoperatethepush-buttonreleaseforclosingtheenginehoodby hand.

4.Toclosetheenginehood,supporttheenginehoodwithhandle(1).Pressthepush-button releasetounlockthegasspring.Releasethepushbuttonandslowlyclosetheenginehood.

5.Latchtheenginehood.

Anairrecirculationfilterelementpluggedwithdustwillresultin decreasedperformanceandservicelifetotheairconditionerorcab heater.

Topreventdecreasedperformance,cleanthefilterelement,as required.

Theairconditionerfilterislocatedonthelowerleftsideofthecabbehindtheseat.

1.Slidetheoperatorseatforward.

2.Slidethefilterelementupward.

3.Taptheairfilteragainstthepalmofone’shandinordertoremovethedirt.Donotuse compressedairtocleanthefilter.

4.Afteryoucleanthefilterelement,inspectthefilterelement.Ifthefilterelementisdamaged orbadlycontaminated,useanewfilterelement.Makesurethatthefilterelementisdry.

Note:Ensurethatthegratingisattherearoffilterwheninstallingtheairfilter.

5.Installthefilterelement.

NOTICE

Failuretoreinstallthefilterelementfortheairconditioningsystem willcontaminateanddamagethesystemcomponents.

Preventsparksnearthebatteries.Sparkscouldcausevaporstoexplode. Donotallowjumpercableendstocontacteachotherortheengine. Improperjumpercableconnectionscancauseanexplosion. Alwayswearprotectiveglasseswhenworkingwithbatteries.

1.TurnalloftheswitchestotheOFFposition.TurntheenginestartswitchkeytotheOFF position.

2.TurnthebatterydisconnectswitchtotheOFFposition.Removethekey.

3.Disconnectthenegativebatterycableatthebattery.

4.Disconnectthepositivebatterycableatthebattery.

5.Disconnectthebatterycablesatthebatterydisconnectswitch.Thebatterydisconnect switchisconnectedtothemachineframe.

6.Makenecessaryrepairsorreplacethebattery.

7.Connectthebatterycableatthebatterydisconnectswitch.

8.Connectthepositivebatterycableofthebattery.

10.InstallthekeyandturnthebatterydisconnectswitchtotheONposition.

Yourengineisequippedwithawaterpump,withafandrive,andwithanalternator.Yourengine canalsobeequippedwithanairconditionerbelt.Formaximumengineperformanceand maximumutilizationofyourengine,inspectthebeltsforwearandforcracking.Checkthebelt tension.Adjustthebelttensioninordertominimizebeltslippage.Beltslippagewilldecreasethe beltlife.Beltslippagewillalsocausepoorperformanceofthealternatorandofanydriven equipment.

Ifnewbeltsareinstalled,recheckthebeltadjustmentafter30minutesofoperation.Iftwobeltsor morearerequiredforanapplication,replacethebeltsinbeltsets.Ifonlyonebeltofamatchedset isreplaced,thenewbeltwillcarrymoreload.Thisisduetothefactthattheolderbeltsare stretched.Theadditionalloadonthenewbeltcouldcausethenewbelttobreak.

1.Opentheenginehood.

2.Applyapproximately98N(22lb)forcemidwaybetweenthepulleys.

3.Measurethedeflectionofthebelt.Thebeltshoulddeflect10to12mm(0.4to0.5inch).

4.Ifthedeflectionisnotcorrect,loosenalternatormountingbolt(1)andbracketbolt(2).Turn adjustingbolt(3)inordertoadjustthebelttension.

5.Whentheadjustmentiscorrect,tightenbolt(1)andbolt(2).

6.Checkthedeflectionofthebeltagain.

7.Ifanewbeltisinstalled,runtheengineatratedspeedforthirtyminutes.Checkthebelt adjustment.Readjustthebelt,ifnecessary.

AirConditionerBelt(IfEquipped)

NOTICE

TheV-beltmustbetensionedcorrectly.Failuretotensionthebelt properlycouldcausedamagetothebeltand/ortotheairconditioner compressor.

1.Applyapproximately100N(22lb)forcemidwaybetweenthepulleys.

2.Measurethedeflectionofthebelt.Thebeltshoulddeflect7to10mm(0.3to0.4inch).

3.Ifthedeflectionisnotcorrect,loosennut(4).Turnadjustingbolt(5)inordertoadjustthe belttension.

4.Whentheadjustmentiscorrect,tightennut(4)toatorqueof38±7N·m(28±5lbft).

5.Checkthedeflectionagain.

Note:Ifanewbeltisinstalled,checkthebeltadjustmentagainafter30minutesofengine operationattheratedenginespeed.

6.Closetheenginehood.

1.Applylubricantthroughthefittingatthebaseofeachboomcylinder.

Note:Yourmachinemayhavethefittingsmountedinaverticalpositionasshowninthe illustrationabove,oryourmachinemayhavethefittingsmountedinahorizontalposition.

2.Thefittingsareatthebaseoftheboom.Thefittingscanbeservicedfromtheplatformon topofthestoragebox.Tolubricatethelowerboombearings,applylubricantthrough fittings(1)and(2).

3.Applylubricantthroughfittings(3)and(4)fortheboomcylinderrod.

4.Applylubricantthroughfitting(5)forthestickcylinderhead.

Note:Toensureproperlubricationofthelowerboombearingsandoftheboomcylinder rodendbearings,lubricantshouldbeappliedthroughfittings(1),(2),(3),and(4).Apply lubricantfirstwhentheboomisraisedandanyattachmentissuspended.Thenapply lubricantwhentheboomisloweredandtheattachmentisrestedonthegroundwithaslight downwardpressure.

Twoshimsofdifferentthicknessareusedatlocation(9).Thethicknessesoftheshimsare0.5mm (0.02inch)and1.0mm(0.04inch).
