Operation

Theoperationsectionisareferenceforthenewoperatorandarefresherfortheexperiencedoperator. Thissectionincludesadiscussionofgauges,switches,machinecontrols,attachmentcontrols, transportation,andtowinginformation.

Photographsandillustrationsguidetheoperatorthroughcorrectproceduresofchecking,starting, operating,andstoppingthemachine.

Operatingtechniquesoutlinedinthispublicationarebasic.Skillandtechniquesdevelopasthe operatorgainsknowledgeofthemachineanditscapabilities.

Maintenance

Themaintenancesectionisaguidetoequipmentcare.TheMaintenanceIntervalSchedule(MIS)lists theitemstobemaintainedataspecificserviceinterval.Itemswithoutspecificintervalsarelisted underthe"WhenRequired"serviceinterval.TheMaintenanceIntervalScheduleliststhepage numberforthestep-by-stepinstructionsrequiredtoaccomplishthescheduledmaintenance.Usethe MaintenanceIntervalScheduleasanindexor"onesafesource"forallmaintenanceprocedures.

MaintenanceIntervals

Usetheservicehourmetertodetermineservicingintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily,weekly, monthly,etc.)canbeusedinsteadofservicehourmeterintervalsifthecalendarintervalsprovide moreconvenientservicingschedulesandapproximatetheindicatedservicehourmeterreading. Performtherecommendedserviceattheintervalthatoccursfirst.

Undersevere,dusty,orwetoperatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationthanisspecifiedinthe maintenanceintervalschartmightbenecessary.

Performserviceonitemsatmultiplesoftheoriginalrequirement.Forexample,atevery500service hoursor3months,alsoservicethoseitemslistedunderevery250servicehoursormonthlyandevery 10servicehoursordaily.

CertifiedEngineMaintenance

Propermaintenanceandrepairareessentialtokeeptheengineandmachinesystemsoperating correctly.Astheheavy-dutyoff-roaddieselengineowner,youareresponsiblefortheperformanceof therequiredmaintenancelistedintheOwnerManual,OperationandMaintenanceManual,and ServiceManual.

Itisprohibitedforanypersonengagedinthebusinessofrepairing,servicing,selling,leasing,or tradingenginesormachinestoremove,alter,ortorenderinoperative,anyemission-relateddeviceor elementofdesigninstalledonorinanengineormachinethatisincompliancewithallapplicable regulationsoftheintendedcountrytowhichithasbeenshipped.Certainelementsofthemachineand enginesuchastheexhaustsystem,fuelsystem,electricalsystem,intakeairsystem,andcooling systemmaybeemission-relatedandshouldnotbealteredunlessapprovedbyCaterpillar.

MachineCapacity

Additionalattachmentsormodificationsmayexceedmachinedesigncapacitywhichcanadversely affectperformancecharacteristics.Includedwouldbestabilityandsystemcertificationssuchas brakes,steering,androlloverprotectivestructures(ROPS).ContactyourCatdealerforfurther information.

ProductIdentificationNumber

EffectiveFirstQuarter2001theProductIdentificationNumber(PIN)haschangedfrom8to17 characters.Toprovideuniformequipmentidentification,constructionequipmentmanufacturersare movingtocomplywiththelatestversionoftheproductidentificationnumberingstandard.Non-road machinePINsaredefinedbyISO10261.ThenewPINformatwillapplytoallmachinesand generatorsets.ThePINplatesandframemarkingwilldisplaythe17characterPIN.Thenewformat willlooklikethefollowing:

2.MachineDescriptor(characters4-8)

3.CheckCharacter(character9)

4.MachineIndicatorSection(MIS)orProductSequenceNumber(characters10-17).Thesewere previouslyreferredtoastheSerialNumber.

MachinesandgeneratorsetsproducedbeforeFirstQuarter2001willmaintaintheir8characterPIN format.

Componentssuchasengines,transmissions,axles,andworktoolswillcontinuetousean8character SerialNumber(S/N).

Anairrecirculationfilterelementpluggedwithdustwillresultin decreasedperformanceandservicelifetotheairconditionerorcab heater.

Topreventdecreasedperformance,cleanthefilterelement,as required.

Therecirculationfilterisontheleftsideoftheoperatorseat.

1.Toremovethefilterelement,removecoverbolt(2)andcover(1).

2.Toremovethefilter,pullthefilteruptowardstheoperatorseat.

3.RefertoOperationandMaintenanceManual,"GeneralHazardInformation"beforeusing pressureairtocleantheairfilterelement.

4.Cleanthefilterelementwithamaximumof200kPa(30psi)pressureair.

5.Afteryoucleanthefilterelement,inspectthefilterelement.Ifthefilterelementisdamagedor badlycontaminated,useanewfilterelement.Makesurethatthefilterelementisdry.

Alwayswearprotectiveglasseswhenworkingwithbatteries.

1.TurntheenginestartswitchkeytotheOFFposition.TurnalloftheswitchestotheOFF position.Removethekey.

2.Disconnectthenegativebatterycableatthebattery.

3.Disconnectthepositivebatterycableatthebattery.

4.Disconnectthebatterycablesfromthemachineifnewcablesareneeded.

5.Makenecessaryrepairsorreplacethebattery.

6.Connectthebatterycablestothemachineifthebatterycableswereremoved.

7.Connectthepositivebatterycableofthebattery.

8.Connectthenegativebatterycableofthebattery.

9.Installthekeyintotheenginestartswitch.

NOTICE

TheV-beltmustbetensionedcorrectly.Failuretotensionthebelt properlycouldcausedamagetothebeltand/ortotheairconditioner compressor.

Yourenginecanbeequippedwithawaterpump,withafandrive,andwithanalternator.Yourengine canalsobeequippedwithaccessorydrivebelts.Formaximumengineperformanceandmaximum utilizationofyourengine,inspectthebeltsforwearandforcracking.Checkthebelttension.Adjust thebelttensioninordertominimizebeltslippage.Beltslippagewilldecreasethebeltlife.Belt slippagewillalsocausepoorperformanceofthealternatorandofanydrivenequipment.

1.Opentheenginehood.

2.Applyapproximately98N(22lb)offorcemidwaybetweenthealternatorandcrankshaft pulleys.

3.Measurethedeflectionofthebelt.Thebeltshoulddeflect10to12mm(25/64to15/32inch).

4.Ifthedeflectionisnotcorrect,loosenalternatormountingbolt(1)and(2).Movethealternator (3)inordertoadjustthebelttension.

5.Whentheadjustmentiscorrect,tightenbolt(1)toatorqueof25.5±1.5N·m(18.8±1.1lbft). Tightenbolt(2)toatorqueof52.5±3N·m(38.7±2.2lbft).

6.Checkthedeflectionofthebeltagain.

Note:Ifanewbeltisinstalled,checkthebeltadjustmentagainafter30minutesofengine operationattheratedenginespeed.

AirConditionerBelt

1.Applyapproximately98N(22lb)offorcemidwaybetweenthecrankshaftpulleyandthe compressorpulley.

2.Measurethedeflectionofthebelt.Thebeltshoulddeflect7to10mm(1/4to3/8inch).

3.Ifthedeflectionisnotcorrect,turnadjustingbolt(4)inordertoadjustthebelttension.

4.Whentheadjustmentiscorrect,tightenadjustmentbolt(4)toatorqueof15±3N·m (11±2.2lbft).

5.Checkthedeflectionagain.

Note:Ifanewbeltisinstalled,recheckthebeltadjustmentagainafter30minutesofoperation.

6.Closetheenginehood.

BladeCuttingEdges-Inspect/Replace

SMCS-6801

Personalinjuryordeathcanresultfromafallingblade. Blockthebladebeforechangingthecuttingedgesandtheendbits.

Checkthecuttingedgeofthebladeandtheendbitsofthebladeforwear.Ifanyofthepartshave signsofunusualwearordamage,replacethepart.

1.Raisethebladeandplaceblockingunderneaththeblade.

2.Lowerthebladeontotheblocking.

3.Removebolts(1),washers(4)andnuts(5).

4.Removecuttingedge(2)andendbits(3).

5.Cleanthesurfacebetweenthecuttingedgeandtheendbits.

6.Turnthecuttingedgeand/ortheendbitsupside-downifthoseedgesarenotworn.

7.Ifbothsidesofthecuttingedgeandtheendbitsareworn,replacethepartswithnewparts.

8.Installthenewpartsortherotatedpartswithbolts(1).Tightentheboltstoatorqueof 270±40N·m(200±30lbft).

9.Raisethebladeandremovetheblocking.

10.Lowerthebladetotheground.
