Foreword

LiteratureInformation

Thismanualshouldbestoredintheoperator'scompartmentintheliteratureholderorseatbackliterature storagearea.

Theinformationcontainedinthisdocumentisthemostcurrentinformationavailableforcoolant,fuels,and lubricants.Speciallubricantsarerequiredforsomemachinecompartments.RefertotheOperationand MaintenanceManualforyourmachineforanyspeciallubricationrequirements.

Wheneveraquestionarisesregardingthemachine,thispublication,ortheOperationandMaintenance Manual,pleaseconsultanyCaterpillardealerforthelatestavailableinformation.

Safety

RefertotheOperationandMaintenanceManualforyourmachineforallsafetyinformation.Readand understandthebasicsafetyprecautionslistedintheSafetySection.Inadditiontosafetyprecautions,this sectionidentifiesthetextandlocationsofwarningsignsusedonthemachine.

ReadandunderstandthebasicprecautionslistedintheSafetySectionbeforeoperatingorperforming lubrication,maintenanceandrepaironthemachine.

Maintenance

RefertotheOperationandMaintenanceManualforyourmachinetodetermineallmaintenance requirements.

MaintenanceIntervalSchedule

UsetheMaintenanceIntervalScheduleintheOperationandMaintenanceManualforyourmachineto determineservicingintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily,weekly,monthly,etc.)canbeusedinsteadof servicehourmeterintervalsiftheyprovidemoreconvenientservicingschedulesandapproximatethe indicatedservicehourmeterreading.Recommendedserviceshouldalwaysbeperformedattheinterval thatoccursfirst.

Underextremelysevere,dustyorwetoperatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationthanisspecifiedin theMaintenanceIntervalSchedulemightbenecessary.

FailuresthatresultfromextendedoildrainperiodsarenotCaterpillarfactorydefectsandthereforearenot coveredbyCaterpillar'swarranty.Inaddition,failuresthatresultfromnotusingtherecommendedoiltype arenotCaterpillarfactorydefectsandthereforearenotcoveredbyCaterpillar'swarranty.

RefertotheapplicableOperationandMaintenanceManualforstandardoildrainperiodsandtothe MaintenanceSection,"LubricantSpecifications"ofthispublicationforengineoiltypeandviscositygrade recommendations.

Toreducethepotentialriskoffailuresassociatedwithextendedoildrainperiods;itisrecommendedthat oildrainintervalsonlybeextendedbasedonoilanalysis,andsubsequentengineinspections.Oilanalysis alonedoesnotprovideanindicationoftherateofformationoflacquer,varnishand/orcarbononpistons andotherenginesurfaces.Theonlyaccuratewaytoevaluatespecificoilperformanceinaspecificengine andapplicationthatutilizesextendedoildrainperiodsistoobservetheeffectsontheenginecomponents. Thisinvolvestear-downinspectionsofenginesthathaveruntotheirnormaloverhaulperiodwithextended oildrainintervals.Followingthisrecommendationwillhelpensurethatexcessivecomponentweardoesnot takeplaceinagivenapplication.

NOTICE

Lightloads,lowhouraccumulation,andexcessiveidling timecancontributetoexcessivewaterinthecrankcaseoil. Corrosivedamage,pistondepositsandincreasedoil consumptioncanalsoresult.Ifoilanalysisisnotdoneor theresultsareignored,thepotentialforcorrosivedamage andpistondepositsincreases.Refertotheappropriate OperationandMaintenanceManualforguidance.

Note:Failuresthatresultfromextendedoildrainperiodsarenotwarrantablefailures,regardlessofuseof thisrecommendedprocedure.Failuresthatresultfromextendedengineoildrainperiodsareconsidered improperuseunderthewarranty.

NOTICE

Whenauxiliarydevices,accessoriesorconsumables(filters, oil,additives,catalysts,fuel,etc.)madebyother manufacturersareusedonCaterpillarproducts,the Caterpillarwarrantyisnotaffectedsimplybecauseofsuch use.Failuresthatresultfromtheinstallationorusageof othermanufacturersauxiliarydevices,accessoriesor consumables,however,arenotCaterpillarfactorydefects andthereforeareNOTcoveredbyCaterpillar'swarranty.

Neverputmaintenancefluidsintoglasscontainers.Drainallliquidsintoasuitablecontainer.

Obeyalllocalregulationsforthedisposalofliquids.

PressurizedAirandWater

Pressurizedairand/orwatercancausedebrisand/orhotwatertobeblownout.Thiscouldresultin personalinjury.

Whenpressurizedairand/orpressurizedwaterisusedforcleaning,wearprotectiveclothing,protective shoes,andeyeprotection.Eyeprotectionincludesgogglesoraprotectivefaceshield.

Themaximumairpressureforcleaningpurposesmustbereducedto205kPa(30psi)whenthenozzleis deadheadedandthenozzleisusedwithaneffectivechipdeflectorandpersonalprotectiveequipment.The maximumwaterpressureforcleaningpurposesmustbebelow275kPa(40psi).

TrappedPressure

Pressurecanbetrappedinahydraulicsystem.Releasingtrappedpressurecancausesuddenmachine movementorattachmentmovement.Usecautionifyoudisconnecthydrauliclinesorfittings.Highpressure oilthatisreleasedcancauseahosetowhip.Highpressureoilthatisreleasedcancauseoiltospray.Fluid penetrationcancauseseriousinjuryandpossibledeath.

FluidPenetration

Pressurecanbetrappedinthehydrauliccircuitlongaftertheenginehasbeenstopped.Thepressurecan causehydraulicfluidoritemssuchaspipeplugstoescaperapidlyifthepressureisnotrelievedcorrectly.

Donotremoveanyhydrauliccomponentsorpartsuntilpressurehasbeenrelievedorpersonalinjurymay occur.Donotdisassembleanyhydrauliccomponentsorpartsuntilpressurehasbeenrelievedorpersonal injurymayoccur.RefertotheServiceManualforanyproceduresthatarerequiredtorelievethehydraulic pressure.

Alwaysuseaboardorcardboardwhenyoucheckforaleak.Leakingfluidthatisunderpressurecan penetratebodytissue.Fluidpenetrationcancauseseriousinjuryandpossibledeath.Apinholeleakcan causesevereinjury.Iffluidisinjectedintoyourskin,youmustgettreatmentimmediately.Seektreatment fromadoctorthatisfamiliarwiththistypeofinjury.

ContainingFluidSpillage

Caremustbetakeninordertoensurethatfluidsarecontainedduringperformanceofinspection, maintenance,testing,adjustingandrepairoftheequipment.Preparetocollectthefluidwithsuitable containersbeforeopeninganycompartmentordisassemblinganycomponentthatcontainsfluids.
