CoolantSpecifications

NOTICE

Useamixtureofwater,ethyleneglycol(antifreeze)andcoolingsystem conditioner.Pure,undilutedantifreezewillfreezeat-23°C(-10°F).

DonotuseCaterpillarliquidcoolingsystemconditionerorcoolant conditionerelementswithDowtherm209Full-Fillcoolant.Followthe instructionsprovidedwiththeDowtherm209Full-Fillcoolant.

Referto"KnowYourCoolingSystem,"FormSEBD0518,formoredetailedspecifications.

Water

Acceptablewaterforuseintheethyleneglycolandwatermixtureisshowninthechartbelow:

Antifreeze

Usethecorrectamountofethyleneglycolmixedwithwater,toprovidefreezeprotectiontothelowest expectedoutsidetemperature.

Conditioner

NOTICE

Alwaysaddliquidcoolingsystemconditionertowater,orinstalla coolantconditionerelement(ifequipped).Neverusewateronly.

Neverusebothliquidcoolingsystemconditionerandacoolant conditionerelement(ifequipped)atthesametime.

UseCaterpillarliquidcoolingsystemconditioneroracoolantconditionerelement(ifequipped).This willprovidea3%to6%concentrationofconditionerinthecoolingsystemtohelppreventcorrosion.

ConditionercanbepurchasedfromyourCaterpillardealer.

FuelSpecificationsandInformation

TypesofFuel

Caterpillardieselengineshavetheabilitytoburnawidevarietyoffuels.Thesefuelsaredividedinto twogeneralgroups,preferredandpermissible.

Thepreferredfuelsprovidemaximumengineservicelifeandperformance.Theyaredistillatefuels. Theyarecommonlycalleddieselfuel,furnaceoil,gasoilorkerosene.

Thepermissiblefuelsarecrudeoilsorblendedfuels.Useofthesefuelscanresultinhigher maintenancecostsandreducedengineservicelife.

Referto"FuelsforCaterpillarDieselEngines,"FormSEHS7067,foradetailedsummaryofpreferred andpermissiblefuelsandtheirspecifications.

RefertoS.A.E.J313DieselFuelsforinformationaboutbetterqualityfuels,suchasignitionquality, gravity/density,viscosity,cloudpoint,sulfurcontent,etc.

FuelSulfurContent

Thepercentageofsulfurinthefuelwillaffecttheengineoilrecommendations(see"EngineOils" under"LubricantSpecifications).

Fuelsulfurischemicallychangedduringcombustiontoformsulfuricacid.Theacidchemically attacksmetalsurfacesandcausescorrosivewear.HigherengineoilTBNvaluesareessentialto minimizecorrosivewear.

Periodicallyrequestfuelsulfurcontentinformationfromyourfuelsupplier.Fuelsulfurcontentcan changewitheachbulkdelivery.

FuelCetaneRequirement

Theminimumfuelcetanenumberrecommendedforthedirectinjectionengineis40.

FuelCloudPoint

Fuelwaxingcanplugthefuelfiltersincoldweather.Thefuelcloudpointmustbebelowthe temperatureofthesurroundingairtopreventfilterwaxingandpowerloss.Fuelheatingattachments areavailablefromyourCaterpillardealertominimizefuelfilterwaxing.

LubricantSpecifications

TheabbreviationslistedbelowfollowS.A.E.J754nomenclature.TheclassificationsfollowS.A.E. J183classifications.TheMILspecificationsareU.S.A.MilitarySpecifications.Thesedefinitionswill beofassistanceinpurchasinglubricants.Therecommendedoilviscositiesarefoundonthe "RecommendedLubricantViscosities"chart.

Theprefix"SPC"isageneralabbreviationusedbyCaterpillartoidentifyspecialoilssuchas syntheticorsemi-syntheticoils.

EngineOils(CDorCD/TO-2)

UseoilsthatmeettheEngineServiceClassificationCD(MIL-L-2104D)oroilsthathavesatisfactory performanceintheCaterpillarOilTestNumberTO-2.TheseoilsarereferredtoasService ClassificationCD/TO-2.

Consultthe"EMALubricatingOilsDataBook,"FormSEBU5939,foralistingofCDoilbrands.

Thepercentageofsulfurinthefuelwillaffecttheengineoilrecommendations.Ifthefuelhasover 0.5%sulfurcontent,theCDengineoilmusthaveaTBNof20timesthepercentageoffuelsulfur (TBNasmeasuredbytheASTMD-2896method).Ifthesulfurcontentisgreaterthan1.5%by weight,useanoilwithaTBNof30andreducetheoilchangeintervalbyonehalf.Consultyour Caterpillardealerforcorrectengineoilrecommendations.

HigherTBNvaluesareessentialtoretardthecorrosivedamagetometalengineparts.

Youroilsuppliershouldbeabletofurnishthecorrectoils.

HydraulicOils(HYDO)

UseEngineServiceClassificationCC(MIL-L-2104B),CC/SF(MIL-L-46152B),CD(MIL-L-2104D) orindustrial-typehydraulicoilsthatarecertifiedbytheoilsuppliertohaveantiwear,antifoam, antirust,andantioxidationadditivepropertiesforheavydutyuse.

UseEngineServiceClassificationCC(MIL-L-2104B)orCD(MIL-L-2104D).

Multipurpose-typeGearLubricant(MPL)

UseGearLubricantClassificationGL-5(MIL-L-2105B).

Walk-AroundInspection

InspectMachine

Foroperatorpersonalsafety,topreventfires,andtoensuremaximumservicelifeofthemachine, makeathoroughwalk-aroundinspectionbeforemountingthemachine.Lookunderandaroundthe machineforsuchitemsaslooseormissingboltsandtrashbuild-up.Lookforoil,fuelorcoolant leaks,andconditionofbucket,teethandtracks.

Hotoilandcomponentscancausepersonalinjury.Donotallowhotoil orcomponentstocontactskin.

Atoperatingtemperature,theenginecoolantishotandunderpressure.

Steamcancausepersonalinjury.

Checkthecoolantlevelonlyaftertheenginehasbeenstoppedandthe fillcapiscoolenoughtotouchwithyourbarehand.

Removethefillcapslowlytorelievepressure.

Coolingsystemconditionercontainsalkali.Avoidcontactwiththeskin andeyestopreventpersonalinjury.

1.Inspecttheimplements,cylindersandlinkagefordamageorexcessivewear.Inspectforanycracks inboomandstickpivotareaandcylindermountingbrackets.Repairifdamaged.

2.Inspectthelightsforbrokenbulbsandlenses.Replaceifbroken.

3.Inspectandremoveanytrashbuildupintheenginecompartment.

4.Inspectthecoolingsystemforleaks,faultyhosesandtrashbuildup.Correctanyleaksandremove anytrashfromradiator.

5.Inspectthehydraulicsystemforleaks.Inspectthetank,hoses,tubes,plugs,jointsandfittings. Correctanyleaks.

6.Inspectthetrack,sprocketsandidlersfordamage,loosenessandexcessivewear.Correctifneeded.

7.Besurethecoversandguardsarefirmlyinplace.Inspectfordamage.

8.Inspectthesteps,walkwaysandhandholdsfortheirconditionandcleanliness.InspecttheFalling ObjectProtectiveStructure(FOPS)fordamage.Repairifnecessary.TightenanylooseFOPSbolts.

9.Inspecttheoperator'scompartmentforcleanliness.Keepitclean.

10.Inspecttheinstrumentpanelforbrokengaugesandindicatorlights.Replaceifbroken.

Alwayschecktheconditionoftheseatbeltandmountinghardware beforeoperatingthemachine.Personalinjurycouldoccurifbeltfailed. Replaceaftereverythreeyearsofuse.

11.Inspecttheseatbeltandmountinghardware.

CoolingSystem

CheckCoolantLevel

Atoperatingtemperature,theenginecoolantishotandunderpressure.

Steamcancausepersonalinjury.

Checkthecoolantlevelonlyaftertheenginehasbeenstoppedandthe fillcapiscoolenoughtotouchwithyourbarehand.

Removethefillcapslowlytorelievepressure.

Coolingsystemconditionercontainsalkali.Avoidcontactwiththeskin andeyestopreventpersonalinjury.

1.Opentheradiatorcapaccessdoorontheleftrearupperpanel.

2.Removetheradiatorcapslowlytorelievepressure.

3.Maintainthecoolantleveltowithin1cm(1/2inch)ofthebottomofthefillpipe.Ifitisnecessary toaddcoolantdaily,checkforleaks.

4.Replacethecapifthesealisdamaged.Installthecapandclosetheaccessdoor.

1.Inspectforaccumulationofdustintheprecleanerbowl.

2.IfdustistotheFULLmark,loosenthewingnutandremovethecap.

4.Installtheprecleanerbowlandcap.Tightenthewingnut. Periodicallywashtheentireprecleanerwithclean,warmwater.

3.Emptythebowl.Wipethecapandbowlwithacleanrag.

Hotoilandcomponentscancausepersonalinjury.Donotallowhotoil orcomponentstocontactskin.

NOTICE

Donotoverfillthecrankcasetoavoidenginedamage.

1.Unlatchandopentheleftrearaccessdoor.

2.Removethedipsticktomeasuretheoillevel.Thelevelcanbemeasuredwithtwomethods.

TheoillevelmustbeintheSAFESTARTINGRANGEontheENGINESTOPPEDsideofthe dipstick.

TheoillevelmustbebetweentheADDandFULLmarksontheENGINERUNNINGsideofthe dipstick.

3.Removetheoilfillplugandaddoilifnecessary.

4.Cleanandinstallthefillplug.

5.Closetheaccessdoor.

FuelTank

DrainMoistureandSediment

Openthefueltankaccesscover.

Fillthefueltankattheendofeachdaytodriveoutmoistureladenair.Fillitwithatleastenoughfuel forashift.

Donotfillthetanktothetop.Fuelexpandswhenitgetswarmandcanoverflow.

Drainmoistureandsedimentfromthefueltankatthestartofeachshiftorafterthetankhasbeen filledandallowedtostandfor5to10minutes.

Openthedrainvalveatthebottomofthetank.Allowthemoistureandsedimenttodrain.Closethe valveandaccesscover.

Themasterfaultlight(1)andairandhydraulicoilfilterindicators(2)shouldlight.

Havenecessaryrepairsmadeiflightsdonotcomeon.

TravelAlarm-IfEquipped

Test

Themachinemustbemovedtotestthealarm.

1.Starttheengine.Raisetheboomhighenoughtoclearobstacles.Watchtheoverheadclearance.

2.Depresstherighttravelpedaltomovethemachineforwardtowardtheidlers.

3.Thetravelalarm,locatedundertherearoftheupperstructure,shouldsound.

4.Releasetherighttravelpedal.Depressthelefttravelpedaltomovetowardthesprockets.Thealarm shouldsound.

5.Pushinthebuttonontopofthesteeringcontrolwhilemoving.Thealarmshouldstopafter10 secondswhenmovingineitherdirection.

6.Stopthemachine.Lowertheequipment.Engagethehydraulicanddirectionallocklever.Stopthe engine.

7.Thesoundlevelcanbeadjustedbymovingadjustmentonbackofalarmtomeetoperating requirements.

ThelevelisusuallysetonHIGHwhenthemachineisshippedfromthefactory.

3.Ifnecessary,removetheoilfillplugandaddoil.

4.Cleanandinstalltheplugs.Closetheaccessdoor.

HydraulicSystem

CheckOilLevel

Atoperatingtemperature,thehydraulictankishotandunderpressure. Hotoilcancauseburns.

Removethefillcaponlywhentheengineisstopped,andthecapiscool enoughtotouchwithyourbarehand.Removethefillcapslowlyto relievepressure.

BACKHOE-Positionthebucketflatontheground,withthestickcylinderfullyextended.

CLAMSHELL-Positiontheclamshellopenontheground,withthestickcylinderfullyextended.

1.Theenginemustbestoppedandthehydraulicoilcool.Thehydraulicanddirectionallockmustbe engaged.

NOTICE

Animproperhydraulicoillevelcanresultinmachinedamage.

2.Unlatchandopentherightsidefrontaccessdoor.

3.MaintaintheoilleveltotheFULLmarkinthesightgauge.

4.Toaddoil,removethefillcapslowlytorelievepressure.

5.Replacethecapgasketifitisdamaged.Installthefillcap. Closeandsecuretheaccessdoor.

Batteries

CheckElectrolyteLevel

Batteriesgiveoffflammablefumesthatcanexplode. Donotsmokewhenobservingthebatteryelectrolytelevels.

Electrolyteisanacidandcancausepersonalinjuryifitcontactsskinor eyes.

Alwayswearprotectiveglasseswhenworkingwithbatteries.

Attheproperchargingrate,inamoderateclimate,abatteryshouldnotrequiremorethan30cc(1 ounce)ofwaterpercellperweek.

1.Unlatchandopentheleftsiderearaccessdoor.

2.Cleanthetopofthebatterieswithacleancloth.Keeptheterminalscleanandcoatedwith petroleumjelly.

3.Inspecttheelectrolytelevelineachbatterycell.Maintaintheleveltothebottomofthefill openingswithdistilledwater.Ifdistilledwaterisnotavailable,usecleandrinkingwater.

4.Closeandsecuretheaccessdoor.

Fittinglocatedinthecab.

Lubricatetheswinggearthroughtheleftfitting,locatedonthecabfloor.

Swingtheupperstructure720°(twofullrotations).Stopateach90°(1/4turn)andlubricatethe bearingthroughtherightgreasefitting,locatedonthecabfloor.

LubricateFitting

Fittinglocatedinthecab.

SwingBearing

Swingtheupperstructure720°(twofullrotations).Stopateach90°(1/4turn)andlubricatethegear throughtherightgreasefittinglocatedonthecabfloor.

Lubricateateachpositionuntilgreaseisvisible(flowingfrombehindthebearingseal).

BoomandStick

LubricateFittings

Lubricatetwofittingsattheheadendoftheboomcylinders.

Lubricatethreefittingsforthelowerboombearings.

Lubricateonefittingattheendofthestick.

Lubricatetwofittingsattherodendsoftheboomcylindersandonefittingattheheadendofthestick cylinder.

Lubricateonefittingattherodendofthestickcylinder,andonefittingattheboomtostickbearing.

BackhoeBucketandLinkage

LubricateFittings

Lubricateonefittingateachendofthebucketcylinder.

Lubricateonefittingatthestickandthreefittingsonthepowerlink.

ClamshellBucketandLinkage

LubricateFittings

Lubricatetwofittingsontheswivel.

Lubricatetwofittingsontherotator.

Lubricatetwofittingsateachsideoftheclamshelllinks.

Lubricatethreefittingsateachsideofthebucket.
