Operation

Theoperationsectionisareferenceforthenewoperatorandarefresherfortheexperienced operator.Thissectionincludesadiscussionofgauges,switches,machinecontrols,attachment controls,transportation,andtowinginformation.

Photographsandillustrationsguidetheoperatorthroughcorrectproceduresofchecking,starting, operating,andstoppingthemachine.

Operatingtechniquesoutlinedinthispublicationarebasic.Skillandtechniquesdevelopasthe operatorgainsknowledgeofthemachineanditscapabilities.

Maintenance

Themaintenancesectionisaguidetoequipmentcare.TheMaintenanceIntervalSchedule(MIS) liststheitemstobemaintainedataspecificserviceinterval.Itemswithoutspecificintervalsare listedunderthe"WhenRequired"serviceinterval.TheMaintenanceIntervalScheduleliststhe pagenumberforthestep-by-stepinstructionsrequiredtoaccomplishthescheduledmaintenance. UsetheMaintenanceIntervalScheduleasanindexor"onesafesource"forallmaintenance procedures.

MaintenanceIntervals

Usetheservicehourmetertodetermineservicingintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily, weekly,monthly,etc.)canbeusedinsteadofservicehourmeterintervalsifthecalendarintervals

providemoreconvenientservicingschedulesandapproximatetheindicatedservicehourmeter reading.Performtherecommendedserviceattheintervalthatoccursfirst.

Undersevere,dusty,orwetoperatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationthanisspecifiedinthe maintenanceintervalschartmightbenecessary.

Performserviceonitemsatmultiplesoftheoriginalrequirement.Forexample,atevery500 servicehoursor3months,alsoservicethoseitemslistedunderevery250servicehoursor monthlyandevery10servicehoursordaily.

CertifiedEngineMaintenance

Propermaintenanceandrepairareessentialtokeeptheengineandmachinesystemsoperating correctly.Astheheavy-dutyoff-roaddieselengineowner,youareresponsibleforthe performanceoftherequiredmaintenancelistedintheOwnerManual,OperationandMaintenance Manual,andServiceManual.

Itisprohibitedforanypersonengagedinthebusinessofrepairing,servicing,selling,leasing,or tradingenginesormachinestoremove,alter,ortorenderinoperative,anyemission-relateddevice orelementofdesigninstalledonorinanengineormachinethatisincompliancewithall applicableregulationsoftheintendedcountrytowhichithasbeenshipped.Certainelementsof themachineandenginesuchastheexhaustsystem,fuelsystem,electricalsystem,intakeair system,andcoolingsystemmaybeemission-relatedandshouldnotbealteredunlessapprovedby Caterpillar.

MachineCapacity

Additionalattachmentsormodificationsmayexceedmachinedesigncapacitywhichcan adverselyaffectperformancecharacteristics.Includedwouldbestabilityandsystemcertifications suchasbrakes,steering,androlloverprotectivestructures(ROPS).ContactyourCatdealerfor furtherinformation.

ProductIdentificationNumber

EffectiveFirstQuarter2001theProductIdentificationNumber(PIN)haschangedfrom8to17 characters.Toprovideuniformequipmentidentification,constructionequipmentmanufacturers aremovingtocomplywiththelatestversionoftheproductidentificationnumberingstandard. Non-roadmachinePINsaredefinedbyISO10261.ThenewPINformatwillapplytoall machinesandgeneratorsets.ThePINplatesandframemarkingwilldisplaythe17characterPIN. Thenewformatwilllooklikethefollowing:

2.MachineDescriptor(characters4-8)

3.CheckCharacter(character9)

4.MachineIndicatorSection(MIS)orProductSequenceNumber(characters10-17).Thesewere previouslyreferredtoastheSerialNumber.

MachinesandgeneratorsetsproducedbeforeFirstQuarter2001willmaintaintheir8character PINformat.

Componentssuchasengines,transmissions,axles,andworktoolswillcontinuetousean8 characterSerialNumber(S/N).

2.Useadeepwellsocketandabreakerbartoloosenthesparkplug.Ifnecessary,seeyourCat dealerforthepartnumberofthesocket.Afterthesparkplughasbeenloosened,usethe sockettoremovethesparkplugbyhandinordertodetectproblemswiththethreads.

NOTICE

Donotovertightenthesparkplug.Theshellcanbecrackedandthe gasketcanbedeformed.Themetalcandeformandthegasketcanbe damaged.Theshellcanbestretched.Thiswillloosenthesealthatis betweentheshellandtheinsulator,allowingcombustionpressureto blowpasttheseal.Seriousdamagetotheenginecanoccur.

Usethepropertorque.

3.InstallthesparkplugbyhanduntilthesparkplugcontactstheARD.Torquethesparkplug totheproperspecification.RefertoSpecifications,"SparkPlug"forthepropertorque specification.

4.Connectthewiringharness.

BackupAlarm-Test

Thebackupalarmisontherearofthemachine.

Inordertotestthealarmforproperfunctioning,turntheenginestartswitchtotheONposition. Applytheservicebrake.Disengagetheparkingbrake.Movethetransmissioncontrolswitchtoa REVERSEposition.

Thebackupalarmshouldstarttosoundimmediately.Thealarmalertsthepersonnelbehindthe machinethatthemachineisbackingup.Thebackupalarmwillcontinuetosounduntilthe transmissioncontrolswitchismovedtotheNEUTRALpositionortoanyFORWARDposition.

BatteryorBatteryCable-Inspect/Replace

1.TurntheenginestartswitchkeytotheOFFposition.TurnalltheswitchestotheOFF position.

2.TurnthekeyforthebatterydisconnectswitchtotheOFFposition.Removethekey.

3.Disconnectthenegativebatterycableatthebatterydisconnectswitch.Thebattery disconnectswitchisconnectedtothemachineframe.

Note:Donotallowthedisconnectedbatterycabletocontactthebatterydisconnectswitch orthemachine.

4.Disconnectthenegativebatterycablefromthebattery.

5.Disconnectthepositivebatterycablefromthebattery.

6.Inspectthebatteryterminalsforcorrosion.Ensurethebatteryiscleanandfreeofdirt/debris. Checkthebatteryventstoensuretheyfreeofdebris/blockage.Inspectthebatteriesforany othersignsofleakageordamage;replacepartsasnecessary.

7.Inspectthebatteryholddownhardwaretoensureitistightandpositionedproperly.The batteriesshouldbeproperlyrestrainedtopreventmovement.

8.Inspecttheallpowercablesforwearordamage(includesalternatorcables,secondary steeringmotorcables,relayconnections,andbatterycables).Lookforanysignsofrubs withadjacentcomponents,crackingoftheinsulation,heatdamagetotheinsulation,etc. Ensureallterminalbootsareinplaceandsecure.Checkallterminalconnectionstoensure connectionsaretight,clean,andfreeofcorrosion.Replace/repairanydamaged,worn,or missingcomponentsasnecessary.

9.Connectthepositivebatterycableatthebattery.

10.Connectthenegativebatterycableatthebattery.

11.Connectthebatterycableatthebatterydisconnectswitch.

12.Installthekeyforthebatterydisconnectswitch.Turnthebatterydisconnectswitchtothe ONposition.

Inspect

1.Stoptheengine.

2.Removetheleft-handpanelandtheright-handpanelfromthefrontoftheengineenclosure.

3.Inspecttheconditionofbelt(1).

4.Replacethebeltifanyofthefollowingconditionsexist:

Excessivecracking

Excessivewear

Excessivedamage

5.Inspectthefreearmstopofbelttensioner(2).Thefreearmstopmustbealignedwiththe greenzonewhichisonthedecalofthebelttensioner.Ifthefreearmstopisineitherofthe redzones,replacethebelt.

Replace/Adjust

1.Releasethetensiononbelt(1).Inserta12.7mm(0.50inch)ratchetintothesquareholein belttensioner(2)andprythebelttensionerinaclockwisedirection.

2.Removethebelt.

3.Installthenewbeltaroundthepulleys.

4.Inspectthefreearmstopofthebelttensioner.Thefreearmstopmustbealignedwiththe greenzonewhichisonthedecalofthebelttensioner.

5.Checkthebelttensionafter30minutesofoperation.

Note:Thebreak-inperiodforthebeltisconsideredtobe30minutes.
