NitrogenInflationInformation

Standbehindthetreadwheninflatingatire.

Propernitrogeninflationequipmentandtraininginitsuseare necessarytoavoidoverinflation.Atireblowoutorrimfailurecanresult fromimproperormisusedequipment.

Caterpillarrecommendsusingdrynitrogen(N2)gasforbothtireinflationandtirepressure adjustmentsonallrubbertiredmachines.Nitrogenisaninertgasandwillnotsupportcombustion insidethetire.

Inadditiontoreducingtheriskofanexplosion,usingnitrogeninsteadofairtoinflatetireslessens theslowoxidationoftherubberandtheaccompanyinggradualtiredeterioration.Thisis especiallyimportantfortiresthathaveanexpectedlongservicelife(fourormoreyears).Italso reducesthecorrosionofrimcomponentsandtheresultantdisassemblyproblems.

AdjustedInflationPressures

Atireinflatedinanenclosedshopareaatatemperatureof18°to21°C(65°to70°F),willbe underinflatedifthemachineworksinfreezingtemperatures.Lowtirepressureshortensthelifeof atire.

Whenoperatinginfreezingtemperatures,consulttheColdWeatherRecommendationsOperation andMaintenanceGuide,FormSEBU5898,foradjustedinflationpressures.

Setthetireinflationequipmentregulatoratnomorethan140kPa(20psi)overtherecommended tirepressure.

UsetheCaterpillarPart6V4040NitrogenInflationGroup,orequivalent,toinflatetiresfroma nitrogengascylinder.SeeSpecialInstruction,FormSMHS7867,fortireinflationinstructions.

Usethesametirepressuresfornitrogeninflationaswouldbeusedforairinflation.

2.Setthebladelengthwiseunderthemachine.Lowerallraisedequipment.Movethetransmission controllevertoNEUTRAL.Engagetheparkingbrake.

3.Installthewheelleanlockpin.

4.Installtheframelockpin.

5.Blockthewheelsandsecurethemachinewithtie-downs.

6.Covertheexhaustopeningtopreventturbocharger"windmilling"intransit.

7.Tiporcovertheseattoprotectthecushion.

8.Turnthekeystartswitchoffandremovethekey.

9.Lockallpossiblecompartments.

10.Infreezingweather,makecertainthatthecoolingsystemisprotectedwithantifreezetothe lowestexpectedoutsidetemperatureorisdrainedcompletely.

11.Checkregulationscoveringthetransportationofcylinderscontainingcompressedgas(blade accumulator).

Roading

NOTICE

Inspectthemachinethoroughlybeforeroading. Whenroading,reducethegroundspeedbeforedownshifting.

BesurethecentershiftlockpinleverisintheINDEXandRUNposition.

1.Measuretheenginecrankcaseoillevel.MaintaintheoillevelbetweentheADDandFULL marksontheENGINERUNNINGsideofthedipstick.

2.Measurethetransmissionanddifferentialoillevel.WiththeenginerunningatLOWIDLEand atoperatingtemperature,maintaintheoilleveltotheFULLmarkonthedipstick.

3.Measurethetandemdrivehousing'soillevel.Addoilifnecessary.

4.Measurethefuellevel.Addfuelifnecessary.

5.Observetheenginecoolantlevel.Maintainthecoolantlevelabovethelevelindicatorplatein thebottomofthefillpipe.

6.Measurethetireinflationpressure.Inspectthetiresfordamage.See"TireInflation Information."

7.Cleanthewindshield,sideandrearglass.

8.Cleanalllightsandreflectors.

9.Makecertaintheheadlights,taillights,turnsignalsandhazardwarninglightsfunctionproperly.

10.Makecertainthatthesteeringfunctionsproperly.

11.Makecertainthebrakesfunctionproperly.

12.Makecertainallthecontrols,indicatorsandgaugesfunctionproperly.

13.Haveafireextinguisher,flaresandsafetyreflectorswiththemachine.

14.Obeyalltrafficregulations.

15.Ifanyoftheindicatorscomeon,stopthemachine.Investigateandcorrectthecause.

16.Stopevery80km(50miles)or2hours,for30minutes.Inspectthemachineandallowthe machinepartstocool.

17.Whentravelinglongdistances,lubricatethemachineatrecommendedintervals.

18.Ifnecessarytoleavethemachineunattended:

a.Lowerthebladeandimplements.

b.MovethetransmissioncontrollevertoNEUTRAL.

c.Engagetheparkingbrake.

d.Pulltheacceleratoruppastthedetenttostoptheengine.TurnthekeystartswitchtoOFFand removekey.

e.Atnight,setoutflaresand/orsafetyreflectors.

ParkingtheMachine

StoppingtheMachine

Iftheservicebrakefails,themachinecanbestoppedwiththeparking brakebymanuallymovinglever(1)totheparkposition.Thebrake fullyapplies,therefore,bepreparedforasuddenstop.

1.Reducetheenginespeed.

2.Applytheservicebraketostopthemachine.

3.Movetransmissioncontrollever(2)toNEUTRAL.Applyparkingbrake(1).

4.Iftheengineistobestopped,setthegovernorcontrollever(3)tohalfspeed.

5.Lowerthebladetotheground.Applyaslightdownpressure.

StoppingtheEngine

Stoppingtheengineimmediatelyafterithasbeenworkingunderload canresultinoverheatingandacceleratedwearoftheengine components.Followthestoppingprocedure,outlinedbelow,toallow theenginetocoolandtopreventexcessivetemperaturesinthe turbochargercenterhousingthatwillcauseoilcokingproblems.

1.Withthemachinestopped,operatetheengineatLOWIDLEforfiveminutes.

2.Pulltheacceleratoruppastthedetent,tostoptheengine.

3.TurnthekeystartswitchtoOFFandremovethekey.

Whenparkingthemachine,thekeystartswitchmustbeOFFandthe centershiftlockpinintheINDEXandRUNposition.

ExtendingMoldboard

2.Loosentheboltssecuringthecylinderrodendbrackettothemoldboard.Removetheboltsand lockwashers.

1.Lowerthebladetotheground.

3.Retractthecylinderrod.

4.Aligntheboltholesinthebracketwiththealternateholesinthemoldboard.

5.Installthelockwashers,boltsandtightenthebolts.

ScarifierDiggingAngle

1.Toadjustthediggingangle,lowerthescarifiertotheground.

2.Removethebracketboltsonbothsidesofthescarifier.

3.Raiseorlowerthescarifiertosettheangle.

4.Installthebracketbolts.

CentershiftCylinderExtension

Installation(TypicalExample)

Beforedisconnectingthecylinder,supportittopreventitfrom droppingandcausingpossiblepersonalinjury.

1.Starttheengineandslightlyextendthecentershiftcylinderrod.

2.Lowerthemoldboardandapplyaslightdownpressure.Stoptheengine.

3.Removetheboltsfromthecapandremovethecap.

4.Movethecylinderawayfromtheballstud.

5.Installthecentershiftextensionlinkwithspacers.Installlockwashers,nutsandbolts.

6.Removethesupportusedtoholdthecentershiftcylinder.

Installationofacentershiftcylinderextensionlinkisnecessarytoallow2:1bankslopecutsonthe rightsideofthemachineonly.Also,anycleanupworkrequiredcanbeaccomplished.Forother operations,removethecentershiftcylinderextensionlinkandattachtherodendofthecylinderto theballstudonthelinkbar.

NOTICE

Interferenceispossibleatthefollowinglocations.

Linkbaroverlaponthedrawbarcrossbeam.

Drawbarmayinterferewiththescarifiermounting.

Extensionlinksmayinterferewiththepinpullerhousing.

Removal

NOTICE

Usecaretopreventdamagetothecentershiftcylinderrod.

1.Useablockorstraptosupportthecentershiftcylinder.

2.Removetheboltsandthelockwashersfromthecentershiftextensionlink.Removethelink.

3.Movethecylinderintowardstheballstudandalignthestudandthecylinderrod.

4.Installthecapandthebolts.

OperatingTechniques

ChangingGearSpeedandDirection

Donotoperatethemachinewithoutnormalairpressure.

Beforeoperatingthemachineoritsimplementsinanydirection,make surethatnooneisendangered.

Fastentheseatbeltbeforeoperatingthemachine. Besuretogroundmoldboardbeforeretractingcentershiftlockpin.

Keeptransmissionengagedwhengoingdownhill.Donotcoast.

Donotpushdownthetransmissionmodulatorpedalwhengoing downhill.

1.Cycleallthecontrolsandcheckthemforproperoperation.

2.MovegovernorcontrollevertotheLOWIDLEposition.

3.Depresstransmissionmodulatorpedal(1).

4.Raiseallimplements.

5.Applyservicebrake(2).

6.Releaseparkingbrake(3).

7.Movetransmissionlever(4)totheleftorright,forthedirectionoftraveldesired.Selectthe desiredspeedtomovethemachine.(Normally2ndor3rdspeed.)

8.Releasethetransmissionmodulatorpedal.

9.Depressacceleratortoobtainthedesiredspeed.

10.Upshiftonespeedatatime.Increasetheenginespeedasnecessary.

NOTICE

Topreventpossibledamagetothemachine,reducegroundspeed beforedownshifting.

11.Downshiftonegearatatime.Whendownshiftingunderaload,increasetheenginespeedto matchtheratioofthelowergearspeed.

12.Tochangethedirectionoftravel,stopthemachineusingtheservicebrake.Movethe transmissioncontrollevertoNEUTRAL,thentothedirectionandgeardesired.

Speedanddirectionalchangesatfullenginespeedarepossible.However,foroperatorcomfort andmaximumservicelifeofpowertraincomponents,themodulatorpedaland/orservicebrake canbeusedwhenfirstmovingthemachineorwhenmakingdirectionalchanges.

ChangingEngineSpeed

Totemporarilydecreasetheenginespeed,depressdecelerator(1)orreleaseaccelerator(2).To increasetheenginespeed,depresstheacceleratorpedalorreleasethedecelerator.

Toset,increaseordecreasetheenginespeed,movethegovernorcontrolleverasnecessary.

TurningAroundUsingArticulation

NOTICE

Topreventpossibledamagetothedrivetrain,besurethedifferential isunlockedbeforeturningormaneuveringthemachine.Keepthe differentialunlockeduntiltravelinginastraightline.

1.TurnLEFTandarticulatetheframeLEFT.

2.TurnRIGHTandarticulatetheframeSTRAIGHT.Continuetograde.

TurningAroundinTightArea

NOTICE

Ifnecessarytocrossaditchwhenturning,backacrossit.

1.Leanthewheelsslightlyinthedirectionofforwardturn(rightforrightturn;leftforleftturn), andturnthewheels.

2.Travelasfaraspossibleinthedirectionoftheforwardturn.

3.Turnthefrontwheelsintheoppositedirection.Backthemachineasfaraspossibletolineitup withthenewdirectionoftravel.

4.Turnthewheelstothenewtraveldirection.Straightenthewheelsaftertheturniscompleted.

BackingOutofaDropofforDitch

1.Stopthemachine.Raisethebladeandimplements.

2.ArticulateRIGHTwhilemovingbackslowly.

3.TurnLEFTwhilemovingbackslowly.

4.Continuetobackoutuntilthemachineiscompletelyoutofthedropofforditch.

GradingAroundanObject

Depressthetransmissionmodulatorpedaltomovethemachineslowly(inch)aroundanobject.

NOTE:Gradeasclosetotheobjectaspossibletominimizehandcleanup.

1.Gradeclosetotheobject.

2.Movethebladeslowlyawayfromtheobject.

3.Movethebladeback,followingthecontouroftheobject.

4.Movethebladebacktotheoriginalposition,beforeencounteringtheobject.

Gradingonan"S"Curve

NOTICE

Topreventtiredamage,donotallowthemoldboardtocontactthe tireswhenarticulatingthemachine.

2.TurnSTRAIGHT,movesideshiftasnecessary.

1.ArticulateLEFT,turnLEFT,sideshiftRIGHT.
