FROM THE DIRECTOR

West Hollywood, The Creative City, through its Recreation Services Division has implemented

be Well WeHo. This initiative uses “evidenced-based programs” which are focused on helping adults in West Hollywood set and reach their wellness goals. Developed from research at Stanford, UCLA and Boston University – now coming to West Hollywood – if you want results, this will get you there!

be Well WeHo was born out of the components of the Aging In Place/Aging In Community Strategic Plan to create a more age-friendly community. This is a new, dynamic collaboration between Partners in Care Foundation, Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles, and the City with support from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

be Well WeHo classes

will be offered in small groups where West Hollywood residents can pursue their personal wellness

goals. And, as we all enroll in these classes, in a collective way, we can contribute to the wellness of the community. When people think of wellness, too often they think of wellness as only eating better and getting more exercise. However, wellness is different for everyone.

be Well WeHo will not define wellness or

dictate appropriate wellness goals. The individual decides what is important for their wellness and quality of being.

Services about the classes which will be at West Hollywood Park, Plummer Park and Kings Road Park. In West Hollywood, the Recreation Services team is dedicated to improving our community’s well-being for everyone. We bring the highest level of park and recreation professionalism to you to make your experience vibrant and fun. We will see you soon in one of our fabulous wellness classes – for class descriptions, go to page 4 of this RecReader. Be well,

CITY NEWS

Announcing the City’s new program – Be Well WeHo

EDUCATION | COMMITMENT | RESULTS The first phase of be Well WeHo will be addressed through the proven, evidence-based classes offering the residents of West Hollywood a rich experience and tools to be the healthiest that we can be. The initiative will focus on helping adults in West Hollywood set and reach our individual wellness goals. be Well WeHo will begin with a series of four evidence-based classes as described below.

1) ARTHRITIS EXERCISE PROGRAM (AE): was designed to benefit people with arthritis and other chronic joint conditions. Sessions cover a variety of range-of-motion and endurance-building activities, relaxation techniques designed to utilize gentle movements. The program also presents information on health education topics. The proven results from AE are an increase in functional ability and self-care, as well as decrease in pain and depression for participants, enabling them to be better able to do the things they want to with less pain.

2) A MATTER OF BALANCE (MOB): helps to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among adults. Created by faculty at Boston University, participants receive instruction on how to 1) view falls as controllable; 2) set goals for increasing activity; 3) make changes to reduce fall risk at home; and 4) exercise to increase strength and balance. After completing the program many participants feel comfortable safely increasing their activity and are more motivated to exercise regularly.

3) STANFORD’S HEALTHIER LIVING helps participants take control of their health and learn skills to manage their health goals and conditions. The program includes techniques to deal with lack of sleep, pain, stress, fitness and more.

4) THE UCLA MEMORY TRAINING presents effective memory-enhancing techniques. The program combines trainer presentations with group discussions, memory checks, skill-building exercises

and provides an innovative educational program for people with mild memory concerns. The course is not

for people with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. Over the next few months, please look for emails, flyers and other community notices from Recreation Services about the classes which will be at West Hollywood Park, Plummer Park and Kings Road Park. If you have questions, please call (323) 848-6843 and ask for Monica.

There is a good reason for the closure of El Tovar Place and all of the construction fencing around part of West Hollywood Park — construction has begun on the forthcoming Aquatic and Recreation Center! The new four-level, 75,000-square-foot Aquatic and Recreation Center is part of Phase II improvements of the West Hollywood Park Master Plan. It will feature two rooftop swimming pools and a multi-sport court that will accommodate a variety of sports such as basketball, volleyball, and dodgeball. The building will also feature five community meeting rooms and one conference room, recreation staff offices, a Tiny Tot program classroom, a public access television studio, lockers, and additional parking.

In addition to the Aquatic and Recreation Center, Phase II of improvements will add small and large dog parks, expanded green spaces, updated children’s playgrounds, and an AIDS Monument to the already constructed West Hollywood Library, which was completed as part of Phase I. Construction began in January 2017 and is anticipated to last for approximately three years, through early 2020. The City and its partners in the effort are working diligently to minimize impacts on park users, on local residents, and on surrounding businesses. Construction fences will ensure safety in and around construction

areas and large expanses of the park will remain open for use. All area businesses remain open! For details about the West Hollywood Park construction, please visit www.weho.org/whparkproject. If you would like to receive regular updates about park construction, please sign up for our email blast at www.weho.org/ email.

YOUR INPUT Regarding Future Programming and Services at West Hollywood Park IS NEEDED! As the exciting construction continues on the Phase II Improvements at West Hollywood Park, the City is already developing plans for the expansion of recreation programs and community services to be offered at the new facilities. You can help by participating in our brief on-line community survey to provide your ideas and suggestions regarding the types of programs and services you would love to enjoy at the new Aquatic and Recreation Center, and within the new outdoor park areas. The community survey will be conducted between April 25 and May 31, 2017. Please visit www.weho.org/recreation to link to the survey. The survey should take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. Thank you for your input and assistance during this exciting time!

CONTACT US AT RECREATION@WEHO.ORG

Although El Tovar Place (the short road between N. San Vicente Boulevard and N. Robertson Boulevard just south of West Hollywood Park) is now closed to allow for construction, West Hollywood Library and its adjacent five-story public parking garage will remain open and accessible from N. San Vicente Boulevard throughout construction, and parking is free for one-hour in the garage. The park will remain open throughout construction, and every existing park facility will remain open until after each new improvement is completed and available.

PARK WILL REMAIN OPEN!

National Night Out

Tuesday, August 1, 2017

This year marks the 34th anniversary of the National Night Out program, which began in 1984 as an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, Sheriff’s-Community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie and to send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community and provides a great opportunity to bring Sheriff’s and neighbors together under positive circumstances. National Night Out gives Neighborhood Watch groups an opportunity to host large scale block parties with barbecues, live music, and lots of free giveaways in a festive setting. The Recreation Division participates by hosting Movie Night in the Park in Plummer Park. Major commercial establishments get involved, such as The Gateway in West Hollywood. www.weho.org/nno It’s a night not to be missed when residents can come out and party in the streets!
