Spring is always a busy time in Recreation. If you are West Hollywood Park patrons you will have noticed that construction has begun. The Tiny Tots building has been demolished and tot programs have relocated to a new bungalow on the lawn in front of the Pool. The Robertson lawn area is fenced off, access to El Tovar Place is closed. The City is committed to minimizing impacts on park users during this next three year process, and we hope that patrons will be patient as work on the renovations and new construction progresses. community members.
LONG BEACH, Calif., April 2, 2015 -- The Long Beach-based nonprofit long known for its dedication to helping underserved men and women with alcohol and drug addictions today announced a new name, Safe Refuge. Along with the new name, the organization has undergone a comprehensive rebranding that includes a colorful new logo, an inspirational tagline and user-friendly website. Founded in 1988, the nonprofit was previously known as the Substance Abuse Foundation of Long Beach.
TARZANA TREATMENT CENTERS, INC. provides inpatient medical detoxification services and

“Our clients, the surrounding communities and all the agencies we work with will be glad to know that even though we are sporting a fresh and modern new identity, nothing else has changed,” said Kathy Romo, Executive Director of Safe Refuge. “Our staff, our philosophy and our values remain the same.”
inpatient substance abuse treatment services.
Romo explained that the decision to rebrand the agency stemmed from the realization that while Substance Abuse Foundation was an accurate description of the services provided, the nonprofit had matured into an organization with additional services and a more expansive vision – and also desired a more inspirational name.
WESTSIDE CENTER FOR INDEPENDENT LIVING assists disabled adults to achieve and maintain independence in their homes and community-based housing.
“We spent quite a bit of time on our rebranding and understanding how we are different from other agencies with similar services. In the end, we felt ‘Safe Refuge’ perfectly captured what clients have felt when they arrive at our doorstep seeking help – and what we want anyone to feel if they are in need,” Romo added. Safe Refuge also is an ideal name because of its campus-like environment, with residential clients living in adjacent houses and apartments, close to the Safe Refuge treatment center, rather than in an institutional setting. Clients can receive residential or day treatments, counseling, housing and a variety of supportive services.
In addition, the name Safe Refuge is more descriptive, as the organization has added a variety of services over the years beyond the core program through which clients achieve sobriety. For example, Ventures Employment

EXCITING IMPROVEMENTS
BEGIN AT WEST HOLLYWOOD PARK
WWW.WEHO.ORG/RECREATION
Things are moving forward at West Hollywood Park! Construction began in January on new improvements. The upcoming phase of work will implement and complete the vision of the West Hollywood Park Master Plan. The park will remain open throughout construction, and every existing park facility will remain open until after each new improvement is completed and available.
6
Phase II of improvements will add an Aquatic and Recreation Center, small and large dog parks, expanded green spaces, updated children’s playgrounds, and an AIDS Monument, to the already constructed West Hollywood Library and adjacent parking structure, which were completed in 2011 as part of Phase I. Phase II of the West Hollywood Park Master Plan follows a two-year design process, which included significant input from community members. The new four-level, 75,000 square foot West Hollywood Aquatic and Recreation Center will feature two rooftop swimming pools, including a competition pool and a recreational pool, and a multi-sport court with bleacher seating and scoreboards that will accommodate a variety of sports such as basketball, volleyball, and dodgeball. The building will also feature community meeting rooms, City of West Hollywood Recreation staff offices, a Tiny Tot program classroom, a public access television studio, and additional parking.
The design’s light, graceful connection will provide expansive park views from inside the new structure. The park will be upgraded with more open space, redesigned “Robertson Gardens” with public art, new picnic areas, and a new exercise circuit for adults throughout the park. The plan also includes off-leash dog parks for small and large dogs, featuring expanses of open space with shade trees, and turf terraces for romping. The AIDS Monument, a collaboration with artist Dan Tobin, will be located within the park’s expanded green spaces along San Vicente Boulevard. Construction is anticipated to last for approximately three years — the City and its partners in the effort are working diligently to minimize impacts on park users, on local residents, and on surrounding businesses. During construction, fences will ensure safety in and around construction areas and large expanses of the park will remain open for use. El Tovar Place will be closed to traffic at Robertson Boulevard; however, the Public parking structure will remain open and accessible from San Vicente Boulevard entrance. For details and frequent updates about the West Hollywood Park Master Plan Phase II, please visit the project website at www.weho.org/whparkproject.
