FROM THE DIRECTOR
Spring forward, Rec Readers!
Some of the questions and discussions that have arisen are: What are the strategies that will help the City’s older adults to
age safely, with health and dignity? How do we connect with each other as our community grows
older, at all ages? How do we plan for our wellness, individually and as a
community? We are working on answers to these and other questions. Whether your own family is comprised of tots, teens, adults, seniors, or is multigenerational, there is much in this Rec Reader to help you.
FROM THE DIRECTOR
In the last edition of the Rec Reader, we introduced the “Aging in Place, Aging in Community” 5-year strategic plan process. As a West Hollywood community, we are building a vision for the future of older adults in West Hollywood as a beginning component of furthering an “age friendly” community. One fundamental element to this vision is for all ages to have active, wellness-oriented programs. The West Hollywood Recreation Services Division is a pivotal partner in moving this forward.
Plus, we listen and explore ideas with you. For instance, on the cover of this issue, we have featured the new Ballroom Dance Class (see page 6). This is in response to community interest – come on out and try it – no prior experience is needed, no partner, just be willing to have some fun and a little exercise/ movement.
We hope the following pages inspire you to engage, sign up, and get active! The City is proud of the high quality Recreation programs that take place in well-kept buildings and parks. Take a moment this Spring to visit your local parks and enjoy the sunshine, connect with friends, and revitalize your life. On behalf of the hard-working staff of the Recreation Services Division, we look forward to the adventure together. Sincerely,
Elizabeth Savage, Director Department of Human Services and Rent Stabilization Telephone (323) 848-6490 (Direct Line)

Short-Term Rentals
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
What this law means for you Individuals and landlords cannot rent a unit or any portion of a unit for a period of 30 days or less. All rentals must be for 31 or more days. Additionally, advertising of this activity is also prohibited.
Does this apply to guest houses or rent stabilized properties? Yes. It applies to ALL types of housing including single-family homes, apartments, condos, and guest houses as well as market-rate and rent-stabilized properties. Property owners may not use the Ellis Act to evict tenants and then convert the properties into short-term rentals.
CITY NEWS
You probably know of at least one friend or family member that has stayed in a short-term rental listed on Airbnb, VRBO, FlipKey or HomeAway when they were traveling out of the area. But did you know that shortterm rentals are actually prohibited in West Hollywood? In September 2015 the West Hollywood City Council adopted an ordinance that further clarifies the City’s long-standing prohibition of short-term rentals.
Am I at risk for eviction if I advertise a short-term rental? The short answer is Yes. The activity is not permitted in the City of West Hollywood and you may be placing your tenancy at risk for eviction. Contact a Rent Stabilization Information Coordinator if you have questions: (323) 848-6450.
How to report a short-term rental If you believe that a violation of this law is taking place in your neighborhood, please contact Code Compliance: • Call us: (323) 848-6516 • Email us: ServiceRequest@weho.org • Use the City’s Mobile App to submit a Service Request
In spring 2016 the City of West Hollywood is launching a citywide public bikeshare system! This new system will be operated by CycleHop, LLC, a company that plans and operates bikeshare systems throughout North America. Compatible bikeshare systems have been launched in both Santa Monica and Beverly Hills featuring the same types of bicycles and will work seamlessly with West Hollywood’s new bike share program. West Hollywood’s system features 150 GPS enabled Social Bicycles (“smart bikes”) located at 20 self-serve stations dispersed throughout the City. Onboard wireless technology allows riders to use a smartphone app to reserve bikes, pay for single rides, monthly or annual memberships, and even share ride information with friends on their social networks. You can also reserve additional bikes for your friends! The bikes feature LED headlights and taillights, eight gears and cargo baskets. Bikeshare is a great way to beat traffic, and it’s fun too!
