FROM THE DIRECTOR

We are all looking forward to expanded aquatics, wellness and fitness programs, arts, crafts, summer camps, new playground space, lawn space where you can read and relax, be at the dog park, enjoy art, visit the AIDS monument space – yes, we are doing many exciting things. As we watch the construction process, remember that West Hollywood Park will remain open throughout construction. Every current park facility will continue to be open until each new improvement is completed and available. Large expanses of the park will remain open for use. El Tovar Place and the adjacent street-level public parking lot will be closed; however, the five-story public Parking Structure will remain open and accessible from the San Vicente Boulevard entrance. Here is a great view of the new park – put on your seat belt, please! A 2-minute Fly-Through Video is posted at www.weho.org/whparkproject Next, please welcome Stephanie Martinez, the City’s new Recreation Services Manager. CITY NEWS

A wish, an invitation, a cheer... however you look at it, be Well WeHo is our call to our West Hollywood community to reach our individual wellness goals.

be Well WeHo is about empowerment and celebration. It is about connecting with others who share your goals and challenges. It is a chance to work with people who have the training and experience to help you find answers that will work for you. So tell us, what is your personal wellness goal? Is it to run a marathon? Or do you want to walk further by parking three spots further away? Maybe it’s to meditate an hour every day. Or maybe it’s to pause just once a day to take a deep, calming breath. Or maybe, like so many of us, you aren’t even sure where to start. Over the next few months, be Well WeHo will be offering new classes and programs to help us all identify and pursue our personal wellness goals. In this Rec Reader, you will find dates and times for: Healthier Living developed by Stanford University and Matter of Balance developed by Boston University Both of these classes lead participants through interactive discussions and exercises all geared to help you make progress toward your wellness goal. But that’s not all. We will be adding classes for both the fall and winter! Classes being planned include:

WEHO.ORG/RECREATION

UCLA Memory Training – a four-week class to help develop strategies to retain and recall information you actually need in the real-world Arthritis Foundation Exercise Class – a great option for anyone with joint or range of motion issues Guided Meditation/Mindfulness – classes intended to help you reduce stress, improve sleep, manage pain or just find that moment of calm And more! Information on these classes as they are booked will be posted on ActiveNet and on fliers available at park sites and around town. And if there are topics you would like to see addressed, tell us! We love ideas! Email us at recreation@weho.org. Questions? Give us a call at (323) 848-6843.

CITY NEWS

PARK WILL REMAIN OPEN!

EXCITING IMPROVEMENTS ONGOING AT WEST HOLLYWOOD PARK

The construction activity currently in progress will add an Aquatic and Recreation Center, small and large dog parks, added parking, and streetscape improvements along El Tovar Place. The new four-level 75,000-squarefoot Aquatic and Recreation Center will feature two rooftop swimming pools, including a competition pool and a recreational pool, and a multi-sport court with bleacher seating and scoreboards that will accommodate a variety of sports such as basketball, volleyball, and dodgeball. The building will also feature community meeting rooms; City of West Hollywood Recreation staff offices; a Tiny Tot classroom; and a public access television studio. The building’s light, graceful design will provide expansive park views from inside its interior. The off-leash dog parks will include open space, shade trees, small mounds of turf, and terraces for romping. Opening of the dog parks is anticipated for the end of 2017. The Aquatic and Recreation Center and streetscape improvements are scheduled for completion in 2019.

Phases 2 and 3 of work will focus on improvements within the existing park, including: expanded open green space; a redesigned “Robertson Gardens” with exciting public art; two children’s playgrounds; picnic areas; and exercise circuit equipment throughout the park. The AIDS monument, collaboration with artist Dan Tobin and the Foundation for the AIDS Monument, will be located within the park’s expanded green space along San Vicente Boulevard. The City, and its partners in the effort, are working diligently to minimize impacts on park users, local residents, and surrounding businesses. Construction fences are in place to ensure safety in and around construction areas. Parking is available in the fivestory parking structure with the first hour free before 6 p.m. One additional free hour of parking will be provided to customers of businesses along Robertson Boulevard, validation cards can be obtained at the time of purchase. Valet parking during the day has been added at northbound Robertson Boulevard just north of Melrose Avenue. For regular updates or to watch the construction via two live webcams, visit www.weho.org/whparkproject. Sign up for email updates and notifications at www.weho.org/email. Questions? Construction continues to move forward at West Hollywood Park! This current phase of work implements and completes the vision of the West Hollywood Park Master Plan. The already constructed West Hollywood Library and adjacent parking structure were completed in 2011. Following a two-year design and community outreach process, the remaining Park improvements are underway. The Park remains open throughout construction, and every existing park facility will remain open until each new improvement is completed and available for the community’s use and enjoyment.

ENVIRONMENTAL EVENTS Storm Water Best Management Practices for a Healthy West Hollywood

Beverly Hills Hazardous Household Waste (HHW) Roundup

Water from rain storms, garden hoses, and sprinklers can cause runoff that collects harmful pollutants like pesticides, pet waste, grass clippings, trash, and automotive fluids. Polluted storm water flows in our street gutters and storm drains, eventually draining untreated to the Santa Monica Bay. Street side storm drain catch basins clogged with pollutants can attract vermin and create foul odors in your neighborhoods. Also, polluted storm water causes health risks to beach goers and marine life.

Saturday, September 16, 2017 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Foothill Road between Alden Drive & West 3rd Street Beverly Hills, CA 90210

Here are some tips on how you can help to do your part in keeping storm water runoff clean: 1. Scoop the Poop. Pick up after your pets and dispose of their waste in the trash. 2. Keep It Clean: It is your responsibility to keep sidewalks, curbs and gutters in front of your property clean. 3. Consider installing a rain barrel on your property to harvest the rain. It’s a great way to save money and conserve one of our most precious natural resources! 4. Use water-based paints whenever possible. Never clean brushes or rinse paint containers in the street, gutter or near a storm drain. Clean water based paints in the sink, and oil based paints with thinner. Wrap dried paint residue in newspaper or let it harden in its container and dispose in the trash. 5. Oil Leaks: Identify and fix oil leaks on your vehicle; clean up drips and spills with absorbent material; dispose of used oil properly. 6. Car Washing: The best practice is to use a commercial car wash, where the wash water is recycled. When washing your car at home, wash it on grass, gravel or a pervious surface, e.g. grass pavers, so water can soak into the ground. If you wash your car in a driveway or City street, use water and phosphorous-free soap, sparingly, with a bucket, sponge, and nozzle on the end of the hose to conserve water and minimize the amount of phosphates entering storm drains, streams and the ocean. 7. Prevent soil and debris from leaving your property. 8. Read The Label: Read and follow the label on all fertilizers and pesticides. The label is the law. 9. Yard Maintenance: Put grass, leaves, and yard trimmings into your green waste barrel.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events, operated by the County and Sanitation Districts, are one-day, drivethrough collection events where residents are invited to drive to a specific location to drop off their household hazardous waste and electronic waste (e-waste). There is a limit of 15 gallons or 125 pounds of hazardous waste per trip.

Solid Waste Collection Information The City’s solid waste hauler, Athens Services, will have no pick up of trash on the following holidays: Ü L abor Day, Monday, September 4, 2017 Ü Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 23, 2017 Ü Christmas Day, Monday, December 25, 2017 Ü New Year’s Day, Monday, January 1, 2018 Holiday trees are 100% recyclable! Athens Services will collect holiday trees on normal pickup days from December 26, 2017 through Saturday, January 13, 2018.
