Welcome Rec Readers! For this Rec Reader issue, I want to tell you about two newsworthy programs –
TEEN CENTER The West Hollywood Teen Center, located in the north wing of the Plummer Park Community Center, has been newly renovated! This is a place for teenagers, ages 9 - 18, to connect with each other. The Recreation Division, through its’ innovative P.A.C.K. program (Providing Activities for City Kids) offers teen volunteer opportunities, homework assistance, cooking classes, ping-pong, video games, special events, crafts, and more. The City’s Teen Center participants help people in need through partnerships with non-profit organizations – providing over 450 hours of volunteer service last year alone! A recent example, P.A.C.K. teens helped at the Union Mission Food Bank. In July, Teen Center youth attended the 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games as “Fans in the Stands”, to cheer on the Special Olympians, when Los Angeles hosted over 7,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities from around the world. If you are a teen who wants to make a difference and have fun while you are at it, come join the P.A.C.K!

Part of the Generation WH programs to build the City of West Hollywood as an “age friendly community”, the City is developing a strategic plan on Aging in Place. We want to evolve as a place where aging is embraced, and persons can remain in the housing of their choice as long as possible. At a special meeting in May 2015, seventy community members led by the Human Services Commission, shared ideas and discussed ways the City can accomplish this goal. The strategic plan will build on existing policies and programs, such as arts and cultural events, developing “lifespan-friendly” housing, improving senior services, and approaches to wellness. The day included a special Innovations Café, which showcased 10 technological advances, including a Virtual Reality demonstration which had several applications including pain management and palliative care, social engagement, and brain health. We had fun as we listened to the Weho community. The Strategic Plan will be presented to the City Council later in the year for its approval.

CITY NEWS
EXCITING IMPROVEMENTS AT WEST HOLLYWOOD PARK
Things are moving forward with Phase Two of new improvements at West Hollywood Park. On June 15, 2015, the West Hollywood City Council approved updates to the project.
The West Hollywood Park Aquatic and Recreation Center includes plans for 2 roof top pools, a gymnasium, Recreation program classrooms, and multipurpose rooms. The Center’s grand stair design will create an engaging connection between open park space and access to the building. It has landscaping, stadium-style seating, and a spot for stair-run exercising. The design’s light, graceful connection will provide expansive park views from inside the new structure. An outdoor fitness loop will circle the park meadow.
4
The project’s off-leash dog park is shaping up to be a haven for dog lovers and four-legged companions. The updated design includes distinct areas for small and large dogs, featuring expanses of open space punctuated by shade trees, small mounds, and turf terraces. The ground material will be artificial “K9” turf with a drainage system. Dual-gate entrances will allow easy and safe passage into the dog park. Other practical amenities will include water bowl fillers and dog waste stations. The AIDS Monument, which is a collaboration with artist Dan Tobin and FAM (Foundation for a National AIDS Monument), will be located within West Hollywood Park — yet it will be a visually distinct and tranquil area to be experienced in many different ways. From afar it will portray, with a sense of scale, the past and present of AIDS in our community — the people we have lost, the people who remember, and people who work for a cure. Inside the monument area, there will be spaces for gathering together, areas for contemplative conversations, and intimate spots for quiet remembrance. The monument will be built into a hillside and plantings will echo a quilt motif, familiar from the AIDS Memorial Quilt. Construction for improvements is planned to begin in 2016. Current park amenities will remain available, as usual, until after improvements are completed. Stay tuned for more updates in upcoming Rec Reader issues. For more information, please visit the project website at www.weho.org/whparkproject
CLEAN & HEALTHY WEST HOLLYWOOD Free Document Shredding & Electronic Waste Collection Event
The document shredding will be done on-site, so participants can watch their documents being destroyed. Electronics accepted for recycling include televisions, computer monitors, personal computers, DVD & VCR players, printers, scanners, radios, video game consoles, cellular phones, tablets, stereos, fax, keyboards, mouse devices, telephones, microwaves and more… For a complete listing of what you can and cannot bring or more information, please call (323) 848-6404.
You Can Help Prevent Sewer Blockages Avoid Clogs - Keep Grease out of the Drain! ÜP our all cooking fats, oils and grease into empty food containers and dispose of in the garbage. ÜW ipe down greasy pots, pans, or dishes with a paper towel or newspaper before washing. Dispose of paper in the garbage.
Large trash items, which are too big to fit into your usual trash container, are called “bulky items”. It is important that West Hollywood residents take responsibility to dispose of these items properly – not simply abandon them at the curb. As a courtesy, the City offers FREE bulky item pick-up to all WeHo residents – year round. To schedule your bulky item pick-up, please call Athens Services directly at (888) 336-6100 or email cs@athensservices. com, detailing your request to include the street address and item description. You may also complete an online form at http://www.athensservices.com/bulky_item.html Please make sure to place your item at the curb, either the night before or the morning of (prior to 7 am) your regular trash day.
Know What 2 Flush! Human waste and toilet paper should be the only thing going down the toilet. Many new products, such as baby or disinfectant wipes and cleaning cloths claim to be flushable. However, they do not break-down quickly enough and can get caught in the sewer pipes. The fact is, some things should NEVER be flushed down the toilet or washed down the drain. Items to not put down the toilet or drain include cotton products like cotton balls, q-tips, and feminine hygiene products, diapers, bandages, dental floss, paper towels, condoms, cat litter, and medications. Dispose of these items in the garbage.
CLEAN AND HEALTHY WEHO
West Hollywood residents and businesses are invited to bring confidential files for shredding and unwanted electronics for recycling on Saturday, August 15, 2015 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. 355 N. San Vicente Boulevard (Cedars Hospital’s Employee Parking Lot)

NEW!
There’s no shortage of people offering onesize-fits-all solutions for all of life’s problems. Unfortunately, people and their environments are too complex and unique for them to work! We’ll cover what science tells us about the distinction between our basic survival needs and the needs and capacities that must be met and exercised in order for us to thrive as human beings. You’ll gain a framework for assessing the physical, psychological, social, and vocational dimensions of your life, how they interact, and how to start cultivating the most deeply fulfilling kind of life that’s also uniquely yours. However, in some ways they (and the unpleasant emotions that often accompany them) are our friends, pointing to where attention is needed. You’ll also learn psychological theory and practical techniques you can use to work collaboratively with your thoughts, not adversarially. You’ll leave with a game plan for aiming your efforts in the directions most conducive to your long-term well-being. Working with Difficult Thoughts and Emotions
Our brains naturally compile the events of our lives into narratives that give us a sense of who we are. However, sometimes taking a closer look at our narrative can help us develop new storylines that highlight important parts of our journey - and ourselves - that might otherwise be overlooked. In this workshop, we’ll cover the basics of how our “narrative identity” is formed. You’ll also compile a narrative highlighting your strength and resilience, and have an opportunity to share it with the group, if you’d like!
