Colton Recycles Visit RepublicServices.com to Learn More about Recycling Waste Services
Empty. Clean. Dry. Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. Anyone growing up in the 1970s, ‘80s or ‘90s learned the three Rs of recycling in school. We were taught to recycle everything we could. We added recycling bins to our homes, our offices and classrooms and recycling became a part of our culture. In the 40 years since recycling was introduced, Americans recycle nearly 87 million tons per year. That means that each of us recycles approximately 1.5 pounds per day! However, the recycling model we all grew up with is changing, and we have to change with it.

The New Model of Recycling
32
Imagine you are preparing to put your recycling and waste by the curb. You had a birthday this weekend, so there are several empty soda cans, a number of tattered paper decorations; multiple birthday card envelopes and half used bottles of ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise in your recycling container. After your recycling is picked up and compacted, the condiment bottles are crushed and burst open, spilling product on everything around them. In addition to attracting bugs and bacteria this incident contaminates many of the highly valuable paper products nearby, making those items unrecoverable. This scenario unfortunately happens daily across the country, sending tons of recyclable items to the landfill. But by practicing Empty. Clean. Dry. with our families we can ensure the recycling materials leaving our homes are in fact recyclable. Together, we are caretakers of this Blue Planet—our home largely covered with blue waters that flow beneath blue skies. It is worthy of every effort we can make to protect it for our children’s children.
The New Way to Recycle Did You Know? Ceramics cannot be recycled with glass and can actually ruin an entire batch of recyclables It takes 92,000 plastic water bottles to equal 1 ton of recycling
1 ton of recycled paper is worth $60 Empty. Empty the product Clean. Rinse the container
Dry. Shake out excess water or let the product dry before placing it in the container
Down the Drain = To the Ocean Did you know…one quart of used oil can contaminate one million gallons of water? California’s coastline is one of the state’s most precious natural treasures. The coastal waters are home to a wide variety of unique marine environments that support rich biological communities.
Oil spills scar our scenic coast, natural habitats and wildlife. After you save yourself money by conducting oil changes at home, save the earth by recycling the waste oil and filter. Find a local business that will recycle your oil free of charge by calling 800-CLEANUP.
WHY RECYCLE? IT’S STATE LAW! AB 341 requires businesses that generate four cubic yards of waste weekly and multifamily housing complexes with five or more units to recycle. REDUCING LANDFILL WASTE is good for the environment
Beginning January 2017— AB 1826 requires businesses that generate four cubic yards or more of organic waste per week to recycle.
