As we enter our ninth year as happening leaders we can openly say that we are delivering you the goods with LOVE. This month we celebrate our love of Arab Culture and bring you a distinctive visual interpretation in the popular QH Sensations Look fashion editorial. With some mini-mafia influence on the editorial side, and in the interest of diversity, we couldn’t help but slip in one of Canada’s first loves; we check out the fastest paced heart pumping sport you may never have experienced in the desert – ice hockey. The events calendar is fairly full across the spectrum of entertainment, arts and culture and eating out for February with Valentine’s Day availing endless options to celebrate. Some take exception with Cupid’s day, advocating that love, empathy and appreciation should be part of our lives 365 days a year. They have our vote! In that vein, our collective hearts have filled with compassion for our global neighbours in Haiti, and we share some ways that you can be part of easing the pain of loss and devastation, make a difference and show you care. On the surface, Yahoo! Answers looks like the slightly slow cousin of Google and Wikipedia, an amalgamation of dumb questions and dumber answers. But the glory, the wonder, the sheer, unadulterated joy lies in that idiocy. The threads range from mildly useful and possibly correct to the intelligence equivalent of the bottom of a hamster cage after that hamster’s girlfriend has left him and he’s sort of let himself go. Weep for the future and marvel at how many people slipped through the cracks of basic fourth grade spelling, but for the love of all that is holy, do not try any of it at home (without first consulting Google)!

We can never get enough of raw fish, particularly when it comes whizzing by on a conveyer belt like some sort of Fordian digestive delivery system. Samurai has won our hearts with their cheap yet snackable options. Plates are priced by colour, from QR 10 to QR 19. Whether you’re a seasoned Japanophile or a sushinoob, between seeing it first and not really knowing what’s rolled up in the rice, magic happens. And we’re not talking the usual magic Japan is responsible for (we’re looking at you unsavory vending machines and Hello Kitty). QH favs include the dragon rolls and the dumplings. Samurai is located in the Villaggio Food Court.

Glee, glorious glee! This show is awesome, taking a quirky drama about high school students and shooting it full of musical theatre methamphetamines. Gleeks unite! Glee brings hairography and jazz hands and showtuny good favorites like ‘Maybe This Time’ ‘Don’t Rain on My Parade’ and the heartpalpitation inducing ‘Defying Gravity’ to the unsuspecting masses. Not to mention a kid in a wheelchair singing ‘Dancing with Myself’ and possibly the best rendition of ‘Single Ladies’ ever, performed by the football team in full uniform. Resistance is futile. The Upside of Down We’re all for artists doing weird things in the name of awesome, so we love Upside Downy Face, a project by Bruton Stroube of people’s faces. Shot. Upside down. Even if gravity worked for you and not against you. you’d still look weird, but in a marvelous way. Check out the Seusian delight at www.brutonstroube.com/UDF/

Set Phazorz to stun This might be more a cool-yet-cautionary tale rather than a ‘recommendation’, as we really can’t condone actually creating this (kids, do not try this at home... go over to a friend’s house) but HOLY HAMSTERS BATMAN, it’s a freaking phaser! Who hasn’t wanted to blast some balloons, melt some G.I. Joes, and take on the Romulan empire, while making appropriate ‘phew phew’ noises? Everyone. The answer is everyone. However the number of times the guy responsible stresses the importance of proper eyewear, the more wary we are of actually trying to make one. After a decade’s hiatus, Sade is back! QH catches up with the mysterious woman behind the music.

elen Folasade Adu’s voice might invite “I was more fascinated by the audience than by the listener into an open book of her soul, anything that was going on on the stage,” she said. but she rarely gives interviews. Launching “They’d attracted kids, mothers with children, old to international success in the 1980s, her people, white, black. I was really moved. That’s the wikipedia entry is barely a page. audience I’ve always aimed for.”

She likes it that way.

“I only make records when I feel I have something to say,” she said. “I’m not interested in releasing music just for the sake of selling something. Sade is not a brand.” In a world swamped with branded migraine-inducing simulacra, Sade says her ‘image’, elegant, funky, vaguely exotic music, is just her.

And she’s wowed them. Forming her band in the twilight of the 70s, she held on to her original group, even after a talent scout offered to sign her independently. Then, as the 1980s dawned, she signed with Epic Records – with the understanding her original band mates, saxophonist Stuart Mathewman, keyboard player Andrew Hale, and bassist Paul Denman, would be along for the ride. Their first single, ‘Your Love is King’, hit the British Top 10 in February 1984 and their first three albums sold millions around the world.

Not Another Silly Love Song Sade’s music stands for itself, and the artist herself lets it do the talking in this exclusive play-by-play in her own words of some of her favourite tracks on her new album, Soldier of Love. “Writing and recording for me is a layering process, with a lot of subtraction, a lot of chipping away. To me a song is like a sculpture. What’s finally left is what it is. I never do covers because I’m not a good enough interpretive singer. I don’t have the technical spectrum to render a great song, if it was done well in the first place. The point for me is to deliver a story or a feeling that doesn’t already exist.” The Moon and Sky: “Stuart brought the basic backing track in with the intro and chorus already established. Though we worked on the verses and bridge together I found it really hard establishing the chorus line over a part already written as it was a bit like karaoke without the words. I found it harder than starting from scratch. This is about not being appreciated, about somebody pretending to let somebody go but not really letting them go. It’s about realizing you can never go back.”

“I’m not interested in releasing music just for the sake of selling something. Sade is not a brand.” It’s when I get on stage with the band and we play that I know that people love the music. I can feel it,” she said. And it’s that love of the music and the fans that have kept her going, and kept her quiet, for the last decade. “You can only grow as an artist as long as you allow yourself the time to grow as a person,” she said. “We’re all parents, our lives have all moved on. I couldn’t have made Solider of Love any time before now, and though it’s been a long wait for the fans- and I am sorry about that- I’m incredibly proud of it.” Soldier of Love is Sade’s 6th album, available from Sony Music Entertainment. It drops this month.

Soldier of Love: “I don’t see this as a love song. It’s about looking for life and faith I think. Someone said to me recently you often sing from a man’s point of view, which is what I do here. When I visualize struggle I often see it as like a wild west scene or battleground. It is a very masculine thing, connected to all the westerns I watched as a child!” Babyfather: “This is about how great it is to be a parent and what a great honour and privilege that is, and what a terrible thing that is to waste. I wanted this to sound quite rough and scrappy, not too honed. The beginning feels like the ice-cream van coming down the street.“ Long Hard Road: “This was written on my birthday five years ago when I was working at home in London. I always consider making a record as a vague possibility, I’m always writing lyrics in my head though I don’t always write them down. The band were keen to get involved but I didn’t want the pressure of everybody flying in. So I started working with a couple of guys – an Argentinean guitarist and an engineer – in my basement. “ The Safest Place: “Is about the idea that you won’t be let down but everybody finds their own way through my songs. They have their own reason for being but you can listen to them the way you want. That is so important.” 15

Being surrounded by the sea, Qatar found a way to live from its natural resources through fishing and pearl diving.

round 1750, the Al Thani family from Najd or central Arabia moved into Qatar as fishermen and pearl divers. When 1850 came around, the northwest area, known as Zubara, became the center for pearl extraction under the rule of the Al Khalifa family of Bahrain. By 1930, the influx of Japanese cultured pearls made the local industry collapse and had a tremendous effect on Qatar’s economy. Around this time, it was predicted the country was rich in oil, and Qatar changed forever– but the pearls remain. This month, the Museum of Islamic Art hosts a special exhibit centered around pearls, with events for the whole family!

Famous Pearls Kinds of Pearls

Pearls have been making headlines all over the world for centuries! Pearl of Allah Discovered on May 7, 1934 off the coast of Palawan Island, Philippines, this mammoth pearl is 9.4 inches long and weighs about 14 lbs. It’s currently the largest pearl on record, valued at $40 million by the San Francisco Gem Laboratory. Having the image of a turbaned face, the Muslim diver who found it gave it the name the Pearl of Allah.

Hope Pearl Named after its original owner who also owned the Hope Diamond, Philip (Henry) Hope, this pear-shaped freshwater beauty is about 2 by 4 and a half inches. It weighs about 3 to 4 ounces with its brilliant color ranging from white to greenish-gold covered with fine luster.

Bosses’ String of Pearls Kikochi Mikimoto, founder of one of the most famous houses in the pearl jewelry industry, made this treasure over a span of 10 years. La Peregrina Once part of the Spanish crown jewels, this egg-shaped pearl is also known as “The Incomparable”. Dodge Pearls A precious necklace that is composed of three strands of natural pearls that is linked to names such as Russia’s Catherine The Great and Anna Thomson Dodge. 224 pearls and two Cartier diamond clasps comprise this wonderful creation. It was sold at the Bonham’s Auction House in New York City for $600,000.

Akoya pearls. Found only in Japan, China, and Vietnam, the colors range from this kind are white, cream, rose, silver, and green. It only rarely grows more than 9 mm in size. Tahitian pearls. Cultivated inside the black-lipped Pinctada Margaritifera species of pearl oysters that are mainly in the French Polynesia area. The colors can actually range from metallic silver to graphite. Burmese pearls. Large cultured pearls that have a diameter of about 10 mm and above which are grown in large oysters off the coasts of Burma. Warmer in color tone than South Sea pearls, this kind once is always considered to be rare and costly. South Sea pearls. Like the Burmese pearls in size. Although it usually has a silvery appearance more often than not, it is not as lustrous as fine Akoya pearls. Mabe pearls. Grown in Japan, China and the United States, these hefty hemispherical pearls are grown against the inside shells of oysters instead of within the body. Because of their shape and size, it’s less expensive than regular round cultured pearls and are typically used mounted in such jewelry as earrings, rings and brooches.

aiti’s capital city Port-au-Prince suffered a devastating blow when on January 12th, 2010 an earthquake measuring 8.0 on the Richter scale hit the already impoverished Caribbean nation. The aftermath has been harrowing. Approximately 200,000 people are feared dead, including members of the United Nations Mission in Haiti, a peacekeeping and police force established after the 2004 ouster of then-President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, who were in the mission’s headquarters when it collapsed during the quake.

Approximately two million people are homeless, up from 1.5 million, and 250,000 are in need of urgent aid. Men, women and children are being pulled from the rubble every day. Little more than a week after the first quake, a powerful aftershock measuring 5.9 struck the city, leveling already vulnerable buildings to the ground and spreading terror amongst an already panic-stricken people. The international response has been one of great passion with not only aid agencies and governments meeting Haiti’s disaster response, but individuals around the world giving what they can to meet the needs of the Haitian people.

Before You Give Disasters bring out the best in humanity, but regardless of when you give to charity, keep a few things in mind:

Doha Red Crescent has set a goal of raising QR 4 Million for financial aid for those affected by the earthquake. That amount would support around 25,000 people and ensure that up to 1,000 affected families have a place to sleep and enough to eat.

Pay attention to where your money is going. Many big organizations have several projects, so if you’re keen for your money to go towards a specific cause or region, it’s good to know. Check out the amount of overhead: some groups have almost none, meaning every penny goes to someone in need. Others can have more than half the donations going to salaries, office supplies, etc. Registered charities should disclose this, so don’t be afraid to ask!

What are you donating? Some groups collect clothes, toys, vitamins, etc. directly, so raiding your closet or working connections can make a world of difference. Others take cash donations, and buy supplies in the areas effected- creating a ripple effect, with more people benefiting from each dollar spent than if that blanket or mosquito net was produced and purchased abroad. Two prominent figures in the Philippine music industry take centre stage in Doha this month, ready to serenade your hearts with melodies and lyrical gymnastics that will definitely make you swoon. QH takes a closer look at how Regine Velasquez and Ogie Alcasid became the Songbird and the Songwriter they are today.

lot of things come out of the Philippines– and passionate music is just one of its finer exports.

“I think it has a lot to do with us being such a sensitive, emotional people,” said Velasquez. “And of course music is a very powerful conduit for releasing whatever pent-up feelings we may have. With the many trials Filipinos face on a daily basis, like poverty, dirty politics... well, there’s nothing like a night out with friends at a karaoke bar to unwind and forget such hardships.”

Velasquez’s journey into the realm of music started early in her life. Her father sang Frank Sinatra songs to her and taught her song lyrics even before she could read. He would even have her sing while submerged neck-deep in water. “My love for singing, and my determination (is what made me) successful at it. Our family started out in poverty. Success in show business was the only way

I knew that could help us rise from that poverty and help my siblings be able to finish their education – which I’m proud to say they all did,” she said. Throughout her childhood, Velasquez competed in various singing contests, earning the top prize in 67 events. She started her professional debut in 1986 with regular performances in TV and an album. By 1989 she was headed for stardom. In the Asia-Pacific Singing Contest held in Hong Kong, she represented the Philippines, winning the grand prize. From that moment on, she was known as Asia’s Songbird. In 1991, Velasquez became the first Filipino to have ever had a solo concert in the Main Hall of Carnegie Hall and in 2000 performed the Philippine Millennium anthem, ‘Written in the Sand’, atop the Manila Peninsula Hotel which was broadcasted in 55 countries. Over the next few years, she made waves in the entertainment industry, by releasing more hit singles, staging concerts, starring in drama shows and films and even hosting singing competitions.

It has been used as an extension of our culture.” Growing up, he always loved singing ever since he could remember. At the adventurous age of 10, he started unifying melodies into words. Bringing up baby. Only 3 years old, Qatar Debate is already making waves all over the world.

Qatar plays host to the 22nd World School Debating Championships this month, after first entering the international debating arena two years ago. QH catches up with one of the stars of the documentary Team Qatar, who started it all, way back in 2007.

lex Just couldn’t have anticipated what he was starting when he and Andrew Goodman founded QatarDebate one steamy September in 2007.

Since then, a documentary film has been made about the team and the 2008 team set a new record as a first time entrant by winning four out of their eight debates at the World School Debating Championships in Washington, followed up by a similarly impressive performance by the 2009 team in Athens last February.

“Debating is certainly a new activity in the Gulf but the success of QatarDebate shows that students here are just as enthusiastic and competitive as other places with more established debating traditions,” said Just.

During the following year, we led monthly workshops, encouraged new schools to get involved, and selected the five students who would represent Qatar in Washington DC in 2008,” said Just. “We did it all in an accelerated manner. Usually a person debates for a couple of years before even reaching the trial stage.” The team was selected after the inaugural Qatar National Schools debating Championships in March, 2008. 16 speakers competed over two days, with a truly Qatari team making the final cut- the team had people from Iraq, Pakistan, Syria, and Qatar, all coming together to debate.

That year, a documentary film, Team Qatar, was made about their journey – giving people at home and abroad a chance to get an inside look at what it takes to be not just the best, but the first. “You can see at the start of the film the team are shaky and nervous, tripping over words and contradicting themselves mid-debate. I think the viewer can get a real sense of all the team growing in confidence as the event in Washington DC approaches,” said Just. “I think it really helped that Andy and I had been through the experience before (represented England and Scotland respectively at past tournaments) and we were able to turn Team Qatar into a formidable unit. By the end of the film they’re confidently exchanging blows with England and Wales, two of the most established teams in World Schools’ debating.”

Ah, Valentine’s Day, that magical time of the year when it’s all right to wear pink and red together, when chocolate becomes an acceptable substitute for meals, and when romance becomes an epic smack down between the eloquent and the... well, not so eloquent. Before you fly into a glitter-and-glue gun snit and just go all Lloyd Dobbler on this problem (and by that we mean saying ‘screw you’ to language entirely and just blaring some Peter Gabriel through a boombox) take a lesson from the Victorians. Those straight-laced lothario’s knew how to get ‘er done. And they did it by letting their posies do the talking! Shhh. . . the flowers are talking to me. . . Flowers have been the gift-of-romantic choice for millennium, with different cultures seeing them as

representations of fertility, femininity and love, all while looking pretty and smelling nice. The Victorians took this to a whole other repression-level by creating Floriography, a sort of floral Morse code where secret messages could be sent through bouquets. But while the Victorians may have perfected it, secret-decoderarrangements existed throughout history and cultures: there’s an independent Japanese flower language called hanakotoba, and a similar Turkish ‘language of objects’. So pick your cultural flavour and hope your sweetie knows the code!

The hottest game on ice comes to Doha this month with the annual Desert cup!

hen the Qatar International Ice Hockey League first glided onto the rink at City Centre nine years ago, they didn’t even have a puck.

“They weren’t allowed to use a puck because it could go up and hurt somebody, and the glass was not proper glass. So someone went to Canadian Tire back home, and got about 30 or 40 balls,” said Rob Carter, the League President. “It was just a bit of fun, about 20 guys getting together. There was no league, just a bit of shinny. It sort of grew from there, every year another player would come, guys would show up from Canada without hockey gear, and they’d go down and say ‘oh we’re playing hockey!’”

They certainly are – now that they’ve got their pucks, and a full sized rink at Villaggio. And from Feb 25th till Feb 27th over 200 players from all over the region will descend on Doha for the annual Desert Cup.

During the regular season, around 120 guys battle it out in Doha on six different teams in two different divisions. And while it might be heavily Canuck-spiked, players come from all over the world, and from all different skill levels. “Our league here we have one or two kids (who are) 16, and we have one gentleman that’s 67,” said Carter. For many people, the hockey they’re playing here in Qatar reminds them a lot of the games they used to play as kids back homein streets, hauling the net to the sidewalk when a car went by, on ponds, and in local rinks all year long. “I think it’s just in my blood. I grew up playing it in a small community in St. Mary’s Bay, Newfoundland. There was no arena or anything like that, I grew up playing road hockey or three months of the year when the ice was on the ocean or on the ponds,” said Gordon Penney, a player who also volunteers as a referee. “It’s the comradeship you have with your people, with the guys, it’s a big part of it too eh?” That’s what keeps the players coming back, game after game, in ever increasing numbers. “I think that obviously the league is after growing, it’s after getting a lot more people involved,” said Blair Rodgers another player from Newfoundland.

It’s one of those things that’s in your blood. It never leaves you, no matter where you are in the world you have your skates with you. 45 minutes then come off. A hockey player can’t do that. The Desert Cup and the regular season in Qatar is a gentlemen’s league, which means it’s a politer version of the game that started in Canada. There’s debate whether it derived from a Mi’kmaq sport, first started in Windsor, Nova Scotia by students at King’s College or in Kingston, Ontario, but either way, it’s been entrenched in the culture for centuries as a bloody battle of brute force on blades. A gentleman’s league basically means there’s no body checking, and no slapshots from amateur Wayne Gretskys.

COLOUR SCOPE

Along with white and brown, these colours are not part of the chromatic spectrum. Grey is cool and conservative. It is used as a colour blend to soften stronger color combinations, adding grace and elegance. Alone it may seem dull and boring. This year, however, grey is everywhere. Fashion houses are combining different shades of grey together in both warm and cool tones to create amazingly stylish and elegant apparel. Nature of Grey: The lighter side of black, grey can be

warm (taupe) or cool (silver) depending on the undertone. Like black, grey is used as a colour of mourning as well as a colour of formality, stability and respect. Charcoal and silver are the most popular shades of grey used. However, as opposed to black, grey suits are part of the uniform of the corporate world, along with the traditional blue ones. You will never see a black suit in a business meeting, only in funerals and formal evening events. This makes grey a safe colour choice when you want to look discerning and elegant. Dark, charcoal grey is a sophisticated colour choice without much of the negative attributes of black, and lighter grey tuxedos are common for men at weddings.

Although well liked and often worn, people rarely name grey as a favorite colour. Perhaps it’s because Grey also is associated with loss or depression. “Grey” skies or feeling “grey” is how we describe a sad day.

Using Grey: All shades of grey are great neutral background colours. Use lighter greys in place of white and darker grey in place of black. Taupe, a greyish brown neutral is a conservative, slightly earthy, warm shade of grey. Light greys enhance combinations of pink, blue, lavender, and green, but might seem to appeal to women more than men. Darken those colours for a more masculine feel. Grey with hot pink reminds us of years gone by and might even seem a little retro. Cool a warm palette by adding grey to rich reds or golden yellows. Grey is timeless, practical, and solid. Grey can mix well with any colour. Too much grey can make us rigid, dull, melancholy, lonely and lifeless. Too little grey and we feel uncertainty, neutral, between light and dark, time to make choices.

Properties of Silver: Used by many healers in ancient times, silver has the ability to energize other stones during the new and full moons. It is believed to be able to draw negative energy out from the body and replaces it with positive energy. It is considered as an excellent metal to be worn for mental, emotional and physical balance.
