Ahmad Helal Al-Mohannadi Chief Executive Officer QatarEnergy LNG
From the Qcon yard in Mesaieed and the QFAB yard in Ras Laffan Industrial City to advanced pipeline coating operations in Umm Alhoul, Qatar is building the industrial backbone required to deliver world-class offshore infrastructure, marking a decisive shift toward becoming a global manufacturing hub.

Hundreds of kilometers of pipeline. Multithousand-tonne offshore structures.
Simultaneous fabrication across multiple sites. Behind Qatar’s North Field expansion lies a scaling industrial ecosystem, increasingly designed, built and delivered within the country.
This transformation reflects the ambitions set out in Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Qatar National Manufacturing Strategy 2024-2030, where strengthening domestic industrial capability is central to long-term economic diversification and global competitiveness.
What was once strategic intent is
now translating into tangible delivery across fabrication yards, shipyards and specialised manufacturing facilities.
These achievements include the successful delivery of complex jacket and topside structures for major North Field developments by the Qcon (Qatar Engineering and Construction Company) yard in Mesaieed and the QFAB yard in Ras Laffan Industrial City (RLIC).
This progress is complemented by the local fabrication of glass-reinforced polymer (GRP) bridges at Qatar Shipyard Technology Solutions in RLIC, as well as large-scale concrete and epoxy pipeline coating at the Wasco facility near Doha.
Together, Qcon and QFAB have emerged as key enablers of Qatar’s offshore expansion, supporting the delivery of critical infrastructure for North Field developments. Operating at increasing scale and complexity, both yards are demonstrating the technical capability, execution discipline and operational maturity required to deliver major offshore projects locally.
The successful delivery of the NFPS WHP12N Jacket proved Qcon’s capability to execute high-quality offshore jackets within demanding timelines.
Qcon yard in Mesaieed has played a pivotal role in advancing Qatar’s offshore projects, with recent milestones highlighting its technical progress and expanding fabrication capabilities.
A defining early achievement was the fabrication of the WHP12N Jacket for the North Field Production Sustainability (NFPS) project, the first offshore jacket to be built in Qatar.
Delivered by Saipem, the structure marked a turning point for local fabrication. Weighing more than 2,800 tonnes (t) and designed for installation in waters approximately 50 metres (m) deep, the four-leg jacket demonstrated Qcon’s ability to execute complex offshore structures at scale.
The jacket’s successful delivery not only validated the yard’s capability to meet demanding quality and schedule requirements, but also established in-country fabrication as a reliable contributor to Qatar’s offshore development.
Since then, Qcon has achieved several further milestones, including the fabrication of EPCOL offshore risers for the WHPs and riser platforms (RPs), tripods and bridges for WHP7S and WHP11S, as well as COMP2 bridges, a flare and a tripod, and has recently expanded into topside modules.
For the NFPS Compression Project, Qcon will fabricate four tripods (63 m water depth), two flare towers (88 m high), eight interconnecting bridges ranging from 40 m to 110 m in length, as well as two interface modules used to connect the existing facilities to new compression facilities CP6S and CP7S, as part of COMP2.
Earlier this year, the yard completed fabrication of two tripods and associated support platforms for the first compression complex, which will be installed offshore later this year. The two interface modules were also completed, loaded out and lifted onto their respective topsides offshore.
All remaining fabrication work has progressed well, with a completion scheduled for August. In addition, the Mesaieed fabrication yard has been awarded a similar scope for the two compression complexes, CP4S and CP6N, for COMP5.
The QFAB yard in RLIC has evolved into a highly capable and versatile fabrication hub, supporting multiple offshore projects in parallel. Its scope has expanded from jacket fabrication for North Field developments to increasingly complex, multidisciplinary work, including topsides fabrication.
A key milestone was the delivery of the WHP13N Jacket, executed by McDermott. Designed for installation

in 50 m water depth and weighing approximately 2,000 t, the structure reinforced QFAB’s ability to deliver medium-to-large offshore jackets with precision, consistency and schedule discipline.
QFAB further demonstrated its scale and efficiency with the fabrication of five jackets for the North Field South (NFS) development. Delivered within a tightly coordinated schedule and installed offshore in 2023, the programme highlighted the yard’s capability to execute batch fabrication while meeting demanding installation timelines.

Building on its success in jacket fabrication, QFAB has taken a major step forward by advancing into topsides fabrication, marking the first time structures of this scale and complexity are being manufactured in Qatar.
As part of McDermott’s EPC execution strategy for the North Field Expansion Project (NFXP), for a total of 13 wellhead topsides, four wellhead topsides are being fabricated in QFAB and the other nine in Batam.
The NFXP adopts a “Design One, Build Many” (D1BM) philosophy, utilising four principal layout and riser configuration types. This approach drives standardisation, enhances efficiency and constructability, and optimises costs.
Key features of the wellhead topsides include unmanned facilities equipped with flare booms and helidecks, 15 well slots, an approximate facility area of 4,325 square metres (m²), four deck levels, and a total dry weight ranging from 3,300 to 3,600 t.
These structures are designed for water depths between 17 m and 43 m. More recently, fabrication has commenced on two Sensor Tower Platform (STP) topsides, incorporating advanced instrumentation and integrated systems, further highlighting the increasing diversity of offshore facilities now being built in-country.
Together, these developments mark a defining moment for Qatar’s manufacturing sector, establishing topsides fabrication as a new frontier in its journey toward becoming a globally competitive industrial hub.
Beyond jackets and topsides, NFXP has required the development of an extensive subsea infrastructure network, connecting offshore platforms to onshore liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities through pipelines and cables.
A key challenge lies in integrating this new network with existing subsea assets. To ensure safe crossings, a wide range of supporting structures, including sleepers and bridges,
have been deployed to maintain the required separation and protect critical infrastructure.
In total, approximately 1,500 subsea structures have been fabricated and installed across the North Field East (NFE) and NFS phases. Delivered through high-capacity fabrication programmes led primarily by QFAB, this scale of work highlights the growing capability of Qatar’s local yards to support complex, multi-phase offshore developments.
While often less visible than jackets or topsides, these structures play a critical role in ensuring the integrity, safety and long-term performance of the offshore network.

Collectively, the progress of Qcon and QFAB reflects a broader transformation in Qatar’s industrial landscape.
What began with the local fabrication of offshore jackets has expanded into increasingly complex scopes, from subsea structures to, more recently, topsides fabrication, marking a significant milestone for the country. This evolution signals a shift from projectbased execution overseas to sustained, in-country capability across the offshore value chain.
The introduction of glass-reinforced polymer for the NFS pipelines subsea structures marks a significant step forward in offering a more efficient and sustainable alternative to conventional steel.
Wasco’s Umm Alhoul facility is elevating Qatar’s fabrication capabilities by coating more than 1,000 km of TMCP line pipe for NFXP and NFPS.
As these capabilities continue to mature, Qatar is not only reducing reliance on international fabrication hubs but also strengthening its position as a competitive, self-sustaining industrial centre, supporting long-term energy development and reinforcing its standing as a global energy leader.
Qatar’s fabrication capabilities in support of its energy sector were further enhanced with the establishment of Wasco’s world-class pipe coating facility in the Umm Alhoul Free Zone near Doha. Initially, the facility was limited to applying concrete weight coating (CWC) to subsea pipelines that arrived in Qatar with fusion bonded epoxy (FBE) corrosion coating already applied overseas.
However, during the NFXP, Wasco expanded its capabilities to include the in-country application of FBE corrosion coating. This development enabled the fully integrated coating of both onshore and offshore pipeline systems within Qatar.
The Wasco facility has since been utilised across major projects, including NFXP (NFE and NFS) and NFPS (EPCOL and COMP1). Within the NFXP scope alone, the works comprised over 50 kilometres (km) of onshore pipelines (FBE-coated) and approximately 700 km of offshore pipelines (FBE with CWC), covering diameters from six inches to 38 inches.
At the same time, NFPS projects included the application of concrete and epoxy coatings to approximately 300 km of thermo-mechanically controlled processed (TMCP) line pipe for pipelines routed to shore. Currently, Wasco is carrying out FBE and CWC for approximately 100 km of corrosionresistant alloy (CRA) clad pipes for the NFPS COMP3 project.
273 km
273 kilometres of concrete weight coating line pipe was manufactured at Wasco Yard.
The introduction of glass-reinforced polymer (GRP) marks a significant step forward in subsea engineering in Qatar. Fabricated locally for the first time, GRP is being applied across North Field projects as a more efficient and sustainable alternative to conventional steel.
During the detailed design phase of the NFS Pipeline Project, a forward-looking engineering approach enabled the adoption of GRP for subsea bridges supporting pipelines, cables and umbilicals, marking a shift from conventional steel in subsea structural applications, improving installation efficiency and overall sustainability.
The structures are being fabricated in Ras Laffan in collaboration between international specialists and Qatar Shipyard Technology Solutions in support of knowledge transfer and local capability development.
GRP has also been deployed in the NFPS COMP3 project, marking the first local production of subsea cable crossing bridges of this kind. These structures demonstrate the material’s versatility, durability, and suitability for increasingly complex offshore applications.
Lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and adaptable to complex designs, GRP offers clear advantages over steel, enabling faster fabrication, easier installation, and improved long-term performance. The adoption of GRP reflects a broader shift toward more innovative, efficient and sustainable solutions in Qatar’s offshore development.
With the combined capabilities of Qcon, QFAB, Wasco and Qatar Shipyard Technology Solutions, Qatar is strengthening its ability to deliver increasingly complex offshore projects locally. Together, these facilities are laying the foundation for a more resilient and competitive industrial future, aligned with Qatar’s long-term vision for growth and diversification.

QatarEnergy LNG’s leadership recently demonstrated a strong commitment to workforce wellbeing through visible presence and reassurance across major project locations, with the aim of uplifting worker morale during a challenging period of regional uncertainty.
Nafez Bseiso, Chief Major Projects Officer, and Robert Norman Faulds, North Field Production Sustainability (NFPS) Venture Manager, together with members of the Major Projects and NFPS Leadership Team, visited camps across multiple sites, including overnight stays alongside workers.
The visits reflected a clear focus on solidarity, reassurance, and support, reinforcing the company's continued commitment to the safety, wellbeing and unity of its people.
Throughout the Holy Month of Ramadan, the CMPO, NFPS VM, and their respective teams also organised and participated in Iftar gatherings across all camps. The engagements provided opportunities for meaningful interaction and shared reflection, fostering a sense of inclusion, comfort and connection among residents.
Leadership engagement continued during the Eid holidays, with additional visits to camps to interact directly with workers. Face-to-face discussions presented a platform for them to listen to workers’ concerns, offer reassurance, and strengthen trust across the workforce. The sustained leadership presence helped maintain cohesion and promote mutual understanding.
In close coordination with camp management teams, leadership also ensured that communication remained calm, clear and consistent across all locations. This approach played an important role in reinforcing stability and workforce confidence.
The positive impact of the initiative was reflected in improved morale and frank engagements among employees, which were open and positive. Javed Ibrahim Shaikh, an operator from Samsung EPC2
NFE, noted that seeing leadership stand alongside employees made him feel safe, valued and prioritised.
The effort brought together Senior Leadership, PMT, Welfare teams, WOC, counsellors, village heroes, camp representatives and management in a unified approach centred on workforce wellbeing and support. The visits delivered a powerful and enduring message: no one stands alone, and people will always remain at the heart of QatarEnergy LNG’s priorities.
Reinforcing the company’s shared commitment to overcoming challenges together, Nafez Bseiso, Chief Major Projects Officer, stated: “We are a family and you’re never alone. United, we grow and rise stronger. Together, we will overcome and emerge even stronger. We shall prevail.”

QatarEnergy LNG presented its achievements in advanced wastewater treatment, recycling and reuse at the second IPIECA Water Peer-to-Peer Workshop, chaired by Shell Qatar and held at the Qatar Science and Technology Park in Doha in late 2025.
IPIECA is a global organisation dedicated to advancing the oil and gas industry’s environmental and social performance to support sustainable development and the energy transition. The workshop brought together more than 65 water and sustainability professionals. QatarEnergy LNG’s Farhan Khan and ConocoPhillips’ Mashael Al Maas presented QatarEnergy LNG’s Wastewater
Recycling and Reuse (WRR) journey. Their presentation highlighted the successful implementation of membrane bioreactor (MBR) and reverse osmosis (RO) technologies that enable up to 65% wastewater recycling, supporting QatarEnergy LNG's Environmental Strategy target of achieving near-Zero Liquid Discharge (nZLD) to sea by 2030.
The engagement concluded with a site visit to the QatarEnergy LNG N3&4 WRR facility at Ras Laffan, attended by more than 20 industry representatives. This engagement showcased the company’s commitment to sharing expertise and promoting best practices in advanced wastewater recycling and nZLD technologies across the industry.

QatarEnergy LNG reaffirmed its commitment to environmental stewardship by organising the annual Turtle Beach Clean-Up at Ras Laffan Industrial City (RLIC) in February. The event brought together more than 1,000 project personnel and management members of companies, contractors and subcontractors operating within RLIC.
Demonstrating strong teamwork and environmental responsibility, QatarEnergy LNG’s North Field Expansion Project (NFXP) teams distinguished themselves by securing top honours. The NFXP Onshore Project team was awarded first prize, while the NFXP Offshore Project team earned third prize in the Turtle Awareness competition.
The recognition reflected the teams’ presentations of Turtle Awareness Models and their ongoing efforts to support environmental initiatives aimed at protecting Qatar’s rich and sensitive marine biodiversity.
Beyond the physical clean-up of nesting beaches, the teams used the turtle awareness models to highlight the life cycle of sea turtles and emphasise the importance of maintaining debris-free habitats. The models will continue to support environmental awareness campaigns across project sites, further engaging the workforce in conservation efforts.
Demonstrating strong teamwork and environmental responsibility, QatarEnergy LNG’s North Field Expansion Project (NFXP) teams achieved notable success during the event.
In parallel, NFXP continues to implement environmental programmes, including regular beach and mangrove cleanup initiatives. These efforts contribute to maintaining a healthy coastal environment while reinforcing the company’s commitment to safeguarding Qatar’s ecosystems.
The initiative aligns with QatarEnergy LNG’s Biodiversity Roadmap and broader Long-Term Environmental Strategy. By advancing programmes that extend beyond regulatory requirements, the company continues to support the Environmental Development Pillar of Qatar National Vision 2030 and uphold its responsible approach to sustainable development.
Through collective dedication and proactive engagement, QatarEnergy LNG remains committed to preserving natural ecosystems for future generations.
