CHRIS NIGHTINGALE Matilda was first commissioned and produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company and premiered at The Courtyard Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon, England on 9 November 2010. It transferred to the Cambridge Theatre in the West End of London on 25 October 2011 and received its US premiere at the Shubert Theatre, Broadway, USA on 4 March 2013.
Production Notes Welcome to our Year 6 production of Matilda The Musical. This musical is full of adventure, friendship and courage. Throughout the course of the year, Year 6 have been on a journey which has culminated in bringing a production of the scale of Matilda to life. They are to be commended for the commitment, courage and enthusiasm they brought to this exciting challenge. Year 6 have been immersed in the world of musical theatre, learning the essentials of memorising lines and bringing their characters to life, but also building skills that will take them into the next stage of their learning journey at Pymble and beyond. They have practised and mastered choreography that brings a positive, dynamic energy to this production and is a joy to watch. The girls have taken on the challenge of Tim Minchin’s wonderful score and made it their own – an impressive feat for Year 6 students! Every student in this Year 6 cohort has grown immensely over these past terms and we are incredibly proud of them. The musical is a special milestone for the Year 6 students and an experience they will never forget. Tonight is a chance to showcase their Junior School Performing Arts journey and to celebrate all they have achieved. At its heart, Matilda is a reminder that we can forge our own path in life and to stand up to injustice when we see it. As you leave the theatre tonight, take a little bit of Matilda with you and remember there is a little bit of her imagination and courage in all of us.

Synopsis Matilda The Musical tells the story of Matilda Wormwood, a remarkably intelligent and imaginative young girl who loves reading and learning. Unfortunately, she is born into a family that neither understands nor appreciates her. Her father, Mr Wormwood, is a dishonest used-car salesman who considers books and education a waste of time, while her mother is obsessed with appearances and television. Matilda’s older brother is also favoured over her. When Matilda begins attending Crunchem Hall School, she discovers that school is ruled by the terrifying Miss Trunchbull, a cruel headmistress who believes children should be punished rather than encouraged. In contrast, Matilda’s kind and compassionate teacher, Miss Honey, recognises her extraordinary intelligence and potential. As Matilda stands up against injustice, she discovers that she possesses a remarkable telekinetic power. She uses her courage, intelligence and newfound ability to challenge Miss Trunchbull and help bring justice to Crunchem Hall. Alongside the main story, Matilda tells the librarian Mrs Phelps, a mysterious story about an acrobat and an escapologist, which gradually reveals a connection to Miss Honey's own tragic childhood. Ultimately, Matilda learns to embrace the power of knowledge, kindness and courage. With the support of Miss Honey and her friends, she discovers the strength to stand up for what is right, transform her own future and inspire those around her to believe that they too, can create change.
