Love Hard Play Hard
Whitefish-based photographer Kat Gebauer on morning light, glitter, and how mountain recreation deepened her relationship with Montana
Kat Gebauer arrives at Montana Coffee Traders in a lilac puffy jacket with a lilac bandana and pink Sambas. It’s early spring, and at 7:30 a.m., the sun is barely up. Kat, meanwhile, has been up and at ‘em for hours—her daily alarm sounds at 4:30 a.m., and she usually heads straight to the gym so she can stay strong as a skier, climber, and member of the local search and rescue team. Fittingly, her license plate reads “UPNATM.” After our conversation, she’s planning to pull a big work day, crisscrossing Northwest Montana for multiple photography clients. She wants to wrap a handful of shoots before a forecasted storm arrives, delivering muchanticipated snow at the end of a dry winter. There’s no way she’s missing those powder turns. There’s a lot on her plate, but Kat doesn’t see it as a full schedule—she sees a life fully lived.

How did you wind up in Whitefish?
KAT: I grew up in Sturgeon Bay, a small town just like Whitefish, but in Door County, Wisconsin. My mom was an artist and my dad was a finance guy. I was always the athletic kid, playing softball and other school sports. When I was a sophomore in high school, my favorite aunt said, “I think you would like skiing, you should come on one of our family trips.” I went and fell in love with it. So, I worked at a ski hill where I went to college in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. A few years after that, I moved to Montana, sight unseen. I got a job doing photography on the ski hill in the winters, and worked as a foreman at the Whitefish Lake Golf Course in the summers.
How did your photography career progress?
KAT: I stopped skiing for like four winters because I worked all the time. It was not fun, people would ski by and say, “How about I take a picture of you?” or “Don’t you wish you were skiing? Ha ha ha.” And then, working at the golf course for 17 years was not a job that was going to go anywhere. But I was building a portfolio of professional photography. In addition to working for Big Mountain Photos, I was shooting weddings, high school seniors, and real estate on the side.
One day about nine years ago, a friend asked if I wanted to go trail running. I said, “No, I really don’t want to do that.” But I’ll do anything. After that, I never ran on a road again. It was just, trail run, trail run, trail run. I started getting better at it, so I signed up for a marathon. Everyone said, “You’re too big of a girl, you can’t do that.” But I finished in under four hours. Then I signed up for a 50-miler, and that turned out awesome, too. I started running a 50-miler once a month. From there, I got into long runs through Glacier Park. Then, four or five years ago, everything changed again when I found friends to go on big days out in the mountains, multiple days and multiple peaks.
I had a friend who was trying to climb the Seven Summits, and he wanted to bring a photographer along. He was like, “Do you want to go to Aconcagua?” I replied, “I have no idea, but, yeah!” Then he replied, “In order to train, we should go climb some volcanoes in Ecuador.” I said, “Yeah, we should go do that!” Eighty feet from the summit of Cotopaxi, our second volcano, I stopped. It was the first time I ever quit anything. So I got “mind/matter” tattooed on the palm of my hand because I didn’t want to give up on Aconcagua. Every once in a while, I could look down and think, I got this. I made it to the summit after 17 days of going up, down, up, down, up, down. And I was the highest woman in the whole wide world for 30 minutes that day.

I started taking pictures because it’s what I love to do. And I love to be outdoors, I love to adventure, and I really like taking photos of people doing what they love. I get comments from people that my photos are inspiring them to get out there, and that’s the biggest reward. My photos are either symmetrical or they’re weighted perfectly, which is why I think people enjoy them. As I’m moving, I can see the framing right away and compose it in my head. I don’t even have to look through my camera; I can just reach my arm out, and I know exactly what I’m going to get. My style is vibrant, colorful, and happy. I like shadows and silhouettes. I’m usually up first thing in the morning, so I get really nice light. How do you balance all this work and play?
KAT: In the summer, I’ll be working on photography 16-20 hours a day, five days straight. And then go out at like 5 a.m. in the morning the next day and start climbing peaks. Home by 8 p.m. at night. The next
morning, work. And then the next day... more peaks. I have to! You have to find what makes you happy. You get one life to live, so you might as well enjoy the hell out of it. In the mountains, everything slows down. At work, my brain is usually like go, go, go, go. Well... it’s still like that, climbing and trail running, but it’s more focused, and at the top of the mountain you have the place to yourself.
The tattoos on the back of my heels say, “love hard, play hard.” All these tattoos are my motivators. I’ll be 50 this year, and I’m getting to the point where I’m trying not to slow down, but it’s definitely happening. Well, not really. Maybe I’m ramping up again! As I’m getting older, I want to take care of myself. I want to live a long life, travel a bunch, and always be able to open my own pickle jars. How did you get involved in Flathead County Search and Rescue?
KAT: About seven years ago, one of my best friends

started doing SAR, and I wanted more mountain partners, so I joined, too. I also got involved with the Flathead Nordic Backcountry Patrol. I figured this would be a good way to give back to my partners. If anything were to happen to me out in the backcountry, I would love it if someone would come take care of me and get me out.
I want to be a good companion for whoever I go out with. When I joined, I didn’t have the medical background, but I can move, I’m good athletically, and I’ve always been coordinated. If they need someone to run 10 miles into the backcountry, I can go in and find someone quickly. I can haul people. Usually, I backcountry ski four to six times a week, so I can get them in the winter too. I just work really hard.
And on FCSAR, we started implementing drones, which I’ve been doing for real estate photography for a long time. I grew up playing video games with my two brothers, which seemed to have helped too.
Tell us about your famous blue bus.
KAT: In 2020, I googled “passenger van, Wisconsin” and this blue bus popped up for like $8,000. I sent it to my friend, who said, “If you don’t buy it, I will.” So I called, didn’t hear back, my heart sank—and then three days later, they called back. I flew home and drove this 37-foot bus back with a friend. We wore Thema and Louise bandanas.
Another friend, who I met on the top of Mount Oberlin in Glacier, helped build it out. Everything I did ended up with glitter, so it’s probably good I didn’t do any more because the whole bus would have been a glitterfest. Everything was designed around the refrigerator. The live slab counter is covered in glitter and I put shiny teal in the cracks. When the sun hits it, the whole thing sparkles. Usually, I have disco balls that hang from the skylights. I love the mother-of-pearl backsplash. With the wood stove, it stays pretty warm in there. It’s got great storage, and on a bus, you learn to use every

square inch. What I still want to build is a swing for the large side door.
It’s been about a year since I lived full-time on the bus. I moved into a house in Whitefish so I could ski every day last winter. The bus is so cool, it’s the greatest thing in the world. The pain in the butt is not having laundry. And the other drawback is that I have two mini Aussies, who are 11 and 13, and who have arthritis, so now it’s hard for them to walk down the bus stairs.
I could find a place closer to Glacier to put the bus. I could plan a trip with it, because I’ve never taken it on a trip. I could drive it to Peru. Or I could sell it. But we’ll see what happens. I can do whatever with it, I can go anywhere.
What’s your advice for people relocating to Montana?
KAT: You have a body! You have feet and hands! Use them. I had no idea how special Montana was until I had lived here for a decade. A few years ago, I ran across the Bob Marshall Wilderness with three

friends, 140 miles in six days. We started at Holland Lake, went to Big Salmon, then came out via Shafer Meadows. It was by far one of the coolest things I’ve ever done, but when I first moved here, I just didn’t know you could do stuff like that. So, I would say, get sucked in and learn to love it as if it were your own backyard.

Community isn’t just a selling point. It’s a commitment. Our agents show up for their neighbors, giving generously of their time and resources to non-profits that make a real difference, including these four.
In Hamilton, Emma’s House has been helping young victims of abuse in Ravalli County heal from trauma for more than 20 years. As an accredited Children’s Advocacy Center, Emma’s House is a safe, child-focused, and trauma-informed environment where children can share what happened to them. Recorded forensic interviews and medical exams become evidence for law enforcement or social workers. This evidence is highquality, obtained in a developmentally appropriate way that doesn’t traumatize the child, and provided without any cost to families or partner agencies.
“We just want to eliminate any barriers to people reporting child abuse, and provide kids the help and support that they need,” says Executive Director Valerie
Windmer. “These cases are often very complex, and the ultimate goal is to provide hope and healing for the child and family.”
The small staff of five—including Twyla, the trained companionship yellow Lab—helps 125 children per year. Emma’s House also provides trauma-informed counseling, as well as acute medical services, with a nurse on call 24/7. After 20 years of work to help kids along the healing process, their plan for the next chapter is to focus on consistency and sustainability.
“Our goal doesn’t sound very glamorous, but it’s just to do what we’re currently doing very well, and to continue being experts in our field,” Windmer says. “Other than that, we are always trying to increase awareness about child abuse and its prevention. We are always continuing our outreach so people know there’s a place to call to get support.”

Glacier NATIONAL PARK

Putting the WILD in Wildlife
In today’s world, it’s not always so easy to feel connected to nature. Spending time in Glacier can be a balm for this sense of disconnection. It’s an incredible gift to watch a moose disappear underwater, a grizzly graze on huckleberries, or a mountain goat dance across a cliff. Glacier provides a diverse range of habitats for wildlife, from windswept prairie on the east side to mossy old-growth forests in the west, and from the silent depths of glacial lakes to the jagged peaks of the Continental Divide. Seeing animals forage, fight, slumber, or soar can change your sense of self, reminding
you that you are part of nature, too.
Vast tracts of rugged, roadless land allow Glacier’s wildlife a measure of privacy, so if you’re the type to hit a dusty trail, a backpacking trip is the best way to stumble upon them doing their thing. But there are certainly some front country areas where wildlife are commonly spotted.
Whenever you encounter an animal, giving them space is safer for you and for them, and if you cause them to move, you are too close. Tread carefully. They don’t need us, but we just might need them.

Moose (Alces alces)
Moose frequent slow-flowing streams, swamps, shallow lakes, and small ponds. Your best bet for a sighting is Fishercap Lake in St. Mary Valley, the Aster Creek marshes on Two Medicine Lake, or the backchannel wetlands of the North Fork Flathead River. Despite their massive size, many adaptations allow moose to navigate their environment with unexpected stealth and grace. Long legs help carry them easily through boggy swamps, dark coats provide shadowy camouflage, and their finely tuned prey senses alert them of our presence far in advance. Find a quiet spot near the water’s edge, sit still, attune your senses, and you just might realize a moose has been there the whole time, slowly chewing on a water lily.
Grizzly (Ursus horribilis)
More than 1,000 grizzly bear call Glacier home, and their presence is not something to take for granted. Once abundant throughout the American West, grizzly bears no longer inhabit the majority of their ancestral ecosystems. But they live across Glacier, from the deep woods of the North Fork to the big valleys of the east side: Two Medicine, St. Mary, and especially Many Glacier. These lowland meadows—a veritable buffet—are the best place to spot a griz. These opportunistic omnivores raid squirrel caches for pine nuts, dig up glacier lily roots, and post up in huckleberry patches. Ravens circle just above wherever they paw through talus for buttery moth larvae. Come fall, they eat 22 hours a day, certainly meal-maxing their time. To distinguish a grizzly bear from a black bear, look for the characteristic shoulder hump, where they store their muscle for all this digging and scavenging.
Mountain Goat (Oreamnos americanus)
As you ascend the Going-to-the-Sun Road, scan the cliffs for small white dots. Equipped with specialized two-toed hoofs, mountain goats easily traverse this rugged vertical landscape where few predators dare follow. Logan Pass is the highest road-accessible point in Glacier Park and your best chance to see one of these alpine athletes foraging on flowers and grasses. Because their plant-based diets lack key minerals, goats must travel miles out of their way for sodium to places like the Walton Salt Lick on Highway 2, deep down in the Middle Fork Flathead River corridor. If you’re lucky enough to lock eyes with a goat—and their rectangular pupils—you’ll walk away with a deep sense of how wild Northwest Montana still is.
Northwest MONTANA

Our largest region reaches from the rugged alpine peaks of the Continental Divide down to the deep red cedar forests of Lincoln County.
With around 115,000 residents, Flathead County and its three main towns—Whitefish, Columbia Falls, and Kalispell—anchor this region. Development is knitting them closer together, but they each have their own personalities.
Tucked into the southwest corner of the valley, Kalispell, the county seat, looks out toward the Swan Range, with occasional flashes of Glacier’s high peaks on the horizon. One of Montana’s fastest-growing cities, Kalispell boasts amenities like the premier Wachholz Center performance hall and an international airport mid-way through a $168 million overhaul. On the weekend, catch a Glacier Range
Riders ball game or wander through the maze of booths downstairs at Western Outdoor.
In the north valley, Whitefish is the region’s quintessential year-round resort town—bustling, charming, and just a stone’s throw from the ski area and lake. Columbia Falls is a timber town coming into its own as the Gateway to Glacier Park. The Flathead River’s final confluence is just upriver, and the water flowing past town comes from pristine headwaters.
The region is home to many smaller rural communities. West Glacier has gas, cell service, and pavement, while Polebridge has none of that and wouldn’t have it any other way. Both are on Glacier’s doorstep, and the park’s internationally designated dark skies make it easy to identify constellations, watch a meteor shower, or catch a

lucky showing of the northern lights.

With 23,000 residents, Lincoln County holds down the far northwest corner of the state.
Head north on Highway 93 toward the Canadian border, and you’ll pass by Olney, Trego, and Fortine. These small communities are a great choice for those seeking serenity and seclusion in the deep woods. Find your flow state at Round Meadow, one of Montana’s best cross-country skiing areas, or go full throttle on your snowmachine in the Northern Whitefish Range’s endless logging roads. Eureka is the final outpost before Canada, with restaurants, shops, a theater, and the Wilderness Club, a golf course that embodies rustic luxury.
From Kalispell’s resurfaced airport runway to Polebridge’s dirt road, this region contains multitudes.

Deep End: Lake Koocanusa
This corner of Montana rewards the curious. The Kootenai National Forest doesn’t make a lot of noise, and Lake Koocanusa is easy to overlook. Don’t—consider this itinerary an invitation.
In 1972, the 422-foot Libby Dam impeded the Kootenai River, drastically raising water levels in over 90 miles of river valley. This dam created Lake Koocanusa, a reservoir that stretches 48 miles to the border, then continues another 42 miles north on Canadian soil. Stop by the Visitor Center for a guided tour through the dam and powerhouse, with pitstops along the way at generators and the spillway. There’s plenty of water for all throttle-happy speedboaters, wind-reading sailors, and everyone in between. All the nooks and crannies of this narrow, winding, and fjord-like valley provide a sense of privacy, despite the easy access. Make sure to boat by the impressive limestone hoodoos. Wet your line if you get the chance—this healthy fishery holds strong populations of kokanee salmon alongside native westslope cutthroat and rainbow trout. If you’re more into four-legged wildlife, keep your eye out for bighorn sheep.

The new road built around the reservoir cut right through a layer of hard quartzite, a rock forming steep slabs, vanishing cracks, and horizontal roofs: a rock climber’s dream. In the 1980s, Canadian climbers began putting up routes on Stone Hill. In 1982, Paul Clark drilled Northwest Montana’s first bolt into the Hold Up Bluffs on the eastern side of Highway 37, creating Clark’s Nutcracker, a 5.9 still climbed today. Presently, there are over 500 established routes. When you’ve had enough solitude, head over to Abayance Bay for the party. This full-service marina and entertainment complex on the eastern shore has 200 boat slips, an amphitheater, and an outdoor lakefront terrace. Order a wood-fired pizza, take in the sunset colors on the Salish Mountains, and dance the night away to headliners like the Red Clay Strays.

Landmark: Kalispell’s Historic Architecture
Wander Kalispell’s quiet, maple-shaded streets and count the number of architectural styles. By the second block, you’ll need two hands. Turns out, this humble town is a leader in the preservation of historic Western architecture.
The arrival of the railroad triggered Kalispell’s first rapid boom, with more than 600 homes built in just two years during the dawn of the 20th century. In these early days, architects favored historically accurate revival styles, especially Queen Anne, Shingle, Colonial, and Gothic Revival, but modern styles like Craftsman and Prairie were popular. Mid-century architectural fashions brought Art Deco and Art Moderne to the scene. No single architect shaped Kalispell more than Fred Brinkman, who had a hand in the design of up to 100 local structures. He explored every architectural trend of his time, pivoting from a crisp white Spanish Mission to a Nautical Moderne accented with frosted glass bricks and seahorse sculptures.
These four public buildings are the best place to start sightseeing, but we recommend drifting off-course on a side street now and then to find a few gems that aren’t on any list.
The Conrad Mansion Museum, pictured above, was designed by Kirtland Cutter in a Norman Victorian Shingle style. Key features include four chimneys made of local stone, mullioned windows with stained glass, and richly detailed hardwood interiors.
A n unforgettable sandstone-and-brick dome welcomes visitors to the Glacier Art Museum, formerly the Hockaday Museum of Art. This Classical Revival-style building was designed by George Shanley as a Carnegie Library.
In the early 1900s, Flathead County hired the architects of the Montana State Capitol to design its courthouse, and the building has commanded downtown Kalispell ever since. Its steeply pitched roofs, finial-topped spires, and soaring central clock tower are unmistakably Chateauesque.
The First Presbyterian Church is a Brinkman Tudor Revival with nods to Glacier National Park’s rustic European-chalet style known as “parkitecture.” It’s a rare building that couldn’t have been designed anywhere else but Northwest Montana.

Whitefish MONTANA

Whitefish looks completely serene from the ski hill skintrack at dawn. Come July, it’ll be anything but, as locals and visitors pack their itineraries with mountain biking at Spencer Trails, paddleboarding on the leisurely Whitefish River, catching the sunset at the dog park, and more.
Whitefish came into being as a small logging outpost along the Great Northern Railway. Over the years, priorities shifted, and today’s economy is built on recreation and tourism. This is a prime example of what’s possible for Montana towns by tapping into the global recreation industry: restaurants, galleries, gear
shops, fitness studios, and upscale hotels. Investments in public parks and trails make it easy to get in a quick but quality run or cross-country ski after work.
Whitefish Mountain Resort is the anchor, with yearround options for family-friendly mountain recreation. The kids will never forget those views of Glacier National Park from the summit, picking huckleberries until their hands and faces are blue, or skiing through crystalencrusted snow ghosts. You won’t either.
The mountains draw people in, but it's the community that keeps them here. Whitefish residents love to get everyone together for events like the Whitefish Winter

Carnival, an occasion for merriment in the deep winter, or the Under the Big Sky Music Festival, known for its blend of national names and regional favorites. In summer, swing by the farmer’s market for fresh honey and salsa, or stop by Thirty Eight, the new downtown food truck court, for some ice cream and music. Artists and creatives find each other at open mics and craft
fairs. Nonprofits are woven into the social fabric, and many of the best events double as fundraisers, like the beloved Whitefish Trail Hootenanny.
Whitefish keeps growing as more people catch on to the philosophy that locals have known for years: the best place to call home is the place you’d go on vacation.

Instant Classics: Dining in Whitefish

From laid-back brewpubs to white-glove service, it’s all on the menu in Whitefish. With independently owned restaurants, a friendly culture of culinary competition, and passionate chefs who could live anywhere but choose to live here, this mountain town’s flourishing food scene often surprises newcomers. Whether you choose Whitefish for its award-winning dining or you just need to refuel after a big day in the mountains, these three new restaurants will have you planning your next reservation after your first bite.
Beldi: This Mediterranean restaurant makes good on its name, an Arabic word that means handcrafted, or “made in the traditional way.” Chef Adam Baker brings coast-to-coast kitchen experience to this Second Street dining room, which is cozy, unpretentious, and high-end where it matters most: the ingredients and presentation. Beautifully plated dishes—like the swordfish served on a bed of farro with fennel, saffron, and grapefruit—are almost too lovely to eat. Almost.
Enga: At the newly opened Larch House, Chef Michael Cartwright elevates alpine cuisine with dishes like the pistachio-crusted elk chop drizzled with Flathead Cherry vincotto. The menu reads like a love letter to the Northern Rockies, shifting with the seasons to showcase local produce. Dine on the
rooftop Terrace, where the only thing that can beat the food is the views. After you couldn’t possibly have another bite, head down to the Antler Room for one (or more...) house whiskey sours.
Mama Ev’s: Owner Eva Volcikova is still thinking about the Neapolitan-style pizza she ate years and years ago during a trip through Italy. And now, thanks to her obsession, Whitefish diners are thinking about pizza all the time, too. Volcikova’s pies are lightly crisped and perfectly charred—the ideal vehicle for fresh toppings. The flour is milled in north-central Montana and mixed with ancient grains, providing a rustic, handmade quality. The space, which occupies a lovingly converted hotel swimming pool, is as unexpected and charming as Mama Ev herself.

Homegrown: Whitefish Ski History
Acentury ago, it was only snow ghosts, wildlife, and the odd plucky skier up on Big Mountain.
Lloyd “Mully” Muldown and Ole Dalen marked the first ski descent in 1933, two years before America’s first destination ski resort, Sun Valley, opened in Idaho. Muldown and Dalen’s enthusiasm spread through town, and four years later, the Hellroaring Ski Club coalesced around a widespread love for the sport. Soon enough, members began dreaming of a ski area and the economic opportunities that came with winter tourism.
Whitefish locals financed more than half of the startup investment, and the rest came from Ed Schenck and George Prentice, Great Falls businessmen who also relocated to the area to invest sweat equity. Now they had a T-bar, but another uphill battle awaited: putting their name on the map. The empire-building Great Northern Railroad helped, as did hosting national ski racing events. Even so, growth came slowly in this rural location. Supporters didn’t see a return on their
investments for decades, but their sacrifice and devotion to the dream established a grassroots ski heritage.
In today’s ski industry, defined by corporate consolidation and cultural assimilation, Whitefish Mountain Resort stands as one of the last major independently owned ski resorts in the American West. Development here has been ambitious but measured. Whitefish is rootsy by national standards, and proud of it. The soul of the place has proven remarkably hard to commodify.
For a Whitefish ski history tour, head up Chair 1 to the Summit House to see vintage skis on display at the Nature Center. Enjoy a full day on the slopes, maybe even taking an hour-long interpretive tour with an ambassador. When the lifts stop spinning, swing by the Ski Heritage Center on Wisconsin Avenue to see photos from Muldown and Dalen’s days, a reproduction of the interior of the Hellroaring Ski Cabin, and the new 10th Mountain Division exhibit.

The Homestead is an exclusive, gated community located just 13 miles north of Whitefish, nestled on over 1,400 acres and surrounded by pristine National Forest. Flathead LAKE
Millions of acres of wilderness feed Flathead Lake, the centerpiece and gravitational culmination of the Crown of the Continent ecosystem. This shimmering gem has 185 miles of shoreline, enough to sustain a constellation of distinct communities, each with its own personality and its own relationship to the water.
Over 15,000 year-round residents have built a distinctly Montana lakeside life in the bays and ports around the lake. Many more flock here during the summer high season, but on the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi, there’s more than enough room for everyone’s jet skis, giant inflatable flamingos, Dragon Boats, and more.

Quick FACTS

On the northeast shoulder, you’ll find Bigfork, a community where a highly successful summer tourism sector supports a vibrant fine dining and arts culture. Take the scenic route along the east side of the lake and stop in Woods Bay at the lakeside margaritaslinging Raven or the “classy casual” Bonfire for lunch. But save some room for a stop at the famous Flathead cherry orchards for dessert.
At the foot of the lake is Polson, the seat of Lake County and the hub of the Mission Valley’s agricultural industry. Catch an indie flick at the Polson International Film Festival, or a summer concert at Kwataqnuk Resort & Casino. Running weekly errands here might lead to a dip in the lake or dinner at Oak’s Korean Kitchen, so bring your bathing suit and appetite.
Head back up the west side, passing through Big Arm, Elmo, Dayton, and Rollins: small communities with big views of the Swan and Mission Mountains. Living here, your camera roll will be full of alpenglow, and of the moon rising over this dramatic horizon.
Sister towns, Lakeside and Somers, on the northwest shoulder deliver prime lake access in the summer and a prized powder stash in the winter. Blacktail Mountain Ski Area, right in the backyard, is known for sheltered powder on its northerly slopes, lovely stands of pine and larch, and, of course, gorgeous views of the lake—the thing that brings everyone together. After a day on the water or hill, there’s no better place to raise a glass than Tamarack Brewing Company, which has been a fixture of the Lakeside community for nearly 20 years.
Every town around this lake thinks it has the best views and closest community. Truth is, they’re all right.

Headwaters: Flathead Lake’s

Wild & Scenic Source
The waters of Flathead Lake are crisp, clean, and uncommonly serene. Credit the river that feeds it. The three forks of the Flathead drain one of the most ecologically intact, undeveloped landscapes in North America—and for the last 50 years, the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act has kept it that way.
Today, it seems obvious that we need a balance between development and wilderness preservation, but this was not the majority view in the mid-20th century, when dams were going up on seemingly every powerful waterway across the West. The first big dam in the region, the Kerr Dam, was built on the Flathead River below the lake in the late 1930s. In the early 1940s, conservationists thwarted plans for a dam on the North Fork at Glacier View, but the Army Corps of Engineers won the South Fork. When the Hungry Horse Dam was completed in 1953, it backed up 34 miles of the South Fork Flathead
River, creating the Hungry Horse Reservoir. At 564 feet tall, it is still one of the largest concrete arch dams in the United States.
When a dam was proposed for the Middle Fork in the late 1950s, biologist John Craighead, tired of fighting dam proposals one by one, shifted tactics. He teamed up with his twin brother Frank, also a biologist, to push for something bigger: a federal classification system to protect America’s remaining wild rivers. The Craighead brothers’ campaign led directly to the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1968, which protects rivers with “outstandingly remarkable values” in wildlife, water quality, scenery, history, and more.

Designing for Lakeside Living
Flathead Lake doesn’t need any help being beautiful. But with great beauty comes great responsibility. Lakeside architecture and design must frame the view, capture the light, and showcase the water—all so that every room feels like the best seat in the house.
These are the details that make the difference:
Blended indoor/outdoor spaces are essential because the whole point is to soak up the natural environment. Pocket doors are an easy way to seamlessly open up interior rooms to the summer breeze. Out on the deck or dock, a pergola, sail shade, or retractable awning provides the perfect amount of shelter.
Guest houses are an opportunity to deepen design themes established in the home, or you can pivot and try something totally unexpected and playful by taking a design risk like a bold wallpaper. A travel theme always lands well, especially if you have interesting and memorable pieces from your own voyages to showcase. Little time is actually spent in the bedrooms at a lake house, so save the square footage for spaces to entertain and hang out. This is why bunk beds are so common in lake houses: Not only are they efficient, they’re perfectly on point for a summer camp vibe. Invest in walkways that allow easy, safe passage to the water. String lights add charm and a visual reminder of the connection between the house and the lake. The walk down to the water's edge sets the tone for every swim, every sunset viewing, every late night on the dock—it deserves some attention. Don’t forget dock appeal. Which side is really the front? Treat both the lakeside and shoreside with care. Guests arriving by boat deserve a welcoming, well-considered landing. Flowers, lighting, and a few well-chosen chairs go a long way.

Bigfork MONTANA
With views to the east dominated by the summits of the Swan Range and the western horizon stretching out across Flathead Lake, Bigfork’s natural beauty is not subtle. It is inspirational—the kind of scenery that demands a response. Bigfork’s answer has always been art. Whether you have the artist’s touch or an eye for it, you’ll find yourself in good company. Duck into a gallery exhibition after dinner, and you might end up closing down the Whistling Andy Distillery deep in conversation with someone whose work you’ve been seeing everywhere.
The village sits on the landing between the mouths of the two rivers that feed the lake, the Flathead and the Swan. The name of Bigfork’s main street, Electric Avenue, comes from its founding power plant, but it still works well because life here runs at full voltage, especially during summer when the days are long, and the lake is irresistible.
Hungry? There’s Burgertown, a no-frills cult classic that’s perfect after a day on the water. Or, when you’ve cleaned up, there’s the rustic-meets-sophisticated Quarter Circle at Averill’s Flathead Lake Lodge. And then there’s Saketome, a lively, lighthearted sushi bar that’s earned a loyal following over 17 years.
As an unincorporated community, not a town, Bigfork relies on volunteer hands to step up and pitch in, which has created a culture of caring and commitment. That’s why everyone seems to be having so much fun on the sidelines of the Fourth of July Parade or the Wild Mile during the Bigfork Whitewater Festival.
The community is here to stay, but the seasons can be counted on to bring change. Fall brings hunting in the wilderness, an opportunity to track trophy mule deer, bull elk, mountain goat, and other game. Whether your hunt is successful, a quiet, attentive walk through the woods is never wasted time. Whether you have a bow, rifle, or just your camera, you’ll appreciate Montana’s famous larch, which turns bright yellow before shedding its needles. Winter on the lakeside is a quiet season, a time to rest and recharge. Many folks ski, snowmobile, and ice fish, but the fervor of summer is a distant memory.
All this quietly adds up to a quality of life that’s hard to find elsewhere. Living here, your sense of gratitude will grow every time you see sunlight filtering through giant ponderosas and scattering across the silky lake.

North IDAHO

With lush temperate forests and wild rivers, North Idaho is the Inland Northwest at its best. Three panhandle counties, Bonner, Boundary, and Kootenai, make up this region of 250,000 people who pride themselves as much on pace as place. In North Idaho, there’s company when you want it, as well as peace and quiet when you don’t.
Exhibit A: As the seat of Bonner County, Sandpoint is a classic mountain town whose motto is “get social with nature.” Downtown Sandpoint is charming and walkable—a perfect evening fits within a few blocks. Start with dinner at Forge Artisan Pizza for a New York or Detroit-style pie. Then, catch an indie film at the century-old Panida Theater, and end the night with a smoked specialty cocktail at 113 Main.
Exhibit B: Sandpoint sits on the northwest shore of Lake Pend Oreille, the fifth deepest in the U.S. Much of its 111-mile shoreline is undeveloped, lending Idaho’s largest lake a rustic, wild sensibility. The Idaho Panhandle National Forest encompasses 2.5 million acres in this region, which is one of the most heavily
forested in the U.S.—the White House’s Christmas tree often comes from here. Would your ideal weekend include ice fishing for record kokanee salmon? Short lift lines and powder laps at Schweitzer Mountain Resort? Exploring Bonner County’s 300 miles of snowmobile trails? If you’re serious about avoiding crowds, this is where you go.
Sandpoint is well-situated, less than an hour from Washington State, Montana, and Canada. Take Highway 95 across the lake toward Spokane, and you’ll encounter a string of smaller communities, beginning with Sagle. Follow Route 200 along the shores of Pend Oreille toward the Cabinet Mountains, and you’ll pass by Hope, where unhurried lake life unfolds at its own pace, and then Clark Fork, where the river delivers fresh, clear water from the Flathead, Bitterroot, and Blackfoot Rivers.
Given all this, we’re not surprised there’s been rapid growth in the luxury market here. Stop by our Sandpoint location on North Third Avenue, and let’s talk about what North Idaho looks like for you.

The Lineup: Sandpoint’s Best Festivals
Sandpoint doesn’t need a reason to celebrate—but it always has one.
For over 40 years, the last week of July and the first week of August have been reserved on music lovers’ schedules for The Festival at Sandpoint. Set up your camp chair on the lawn by Lake Pend Oreille for some local talent, national headliners, and at least one new band you’ll be telling people about. From rock to reggae, there’s a show for everyone. The non-profit arm of Festival at Sandpoint provides music education, grants, and an instrument library.
Labor Day weekend in Sandpoint belongs to Schweitzer Fall Fest. Come for the music, microbrews, closing weekend of summer operations, or all of the above. One of the most scenic stages in the state showcases four days of Americana, folk, and rock, with Lake Pend Oreille in the background. This view could headline on its own. Kids can dig for gems at the Cranky Jennings Mining Co. Sluice Box or mix-and-match original recipes at the soda station.
Sandpoint doesn’t hibernate. A local tradition for over 50 years, the Sandpoint Winter Carnival packs February with live music, specials, and block parties downtown, as well as events up at Schweitzer Resort. Sign up for a charcuterie workshop at Barrel 33 or take on the Thursday-night regulars at Connie’s cribbage tournament. And don’t miss the iconic K9 Keg Pull, a fundraiser for a local animal shelter where St. Bernards haul a full-sized keg, Aussies get a slim keg, and dachshunds drag a beer can down the snowy track. Lost in the ‘50s is a peak weekend for vintage gearheads, but you don’t need to know a carburetor from a crankshaft to enjoy the parade of beautifully restored hot rods, muscle cars, and classic motorcycles. The old-school rock-n-roll concert is a fitting end to a day of nostalgia. Festivities kick off the night before at Connie’s, a former Conoco station with a five-seat lunch counter that’s been feeding Sandpoint since 1952.

All In: The Pull of Priest Lake
Priest Lake always rewards your presence, whether you’re waterskiing glassy morning water in July or following wolf tracks through the snow in January.
From Sandpoint, head up into the southern tip of the Selkirk Mountains to a lake shaped by glaciation and volcanic activity. A lush forest of fern, moss, and cedar lines the shore. Sandy beaches fade into the clear, wild water.
With public lands on both sides, campgrounds, state parks, and launch sites surround the lake. Island camping is one of Priest Lake’s signature experiences. On Kalispell Island, grill giant, fresh-caught mackinaw with garlic and butter, take a walk on the scenic trail around the island during sunset, and call it a night. Bartoo Island is home to the Sunrise Group campsite and the historic 1897 Vinter-Nelson cabin.
Boat to the head of Priest Lake and follow the twomile-long Throughfare to the protected Upper Priest Lake Scenic Area for dispersed camping, more secluded wildlife viewing, fishing, and huckleberry picking.
The Selkirk Crest cuts across the eastern skyline, prominently featuring Gunsight Peak and Mount Roothaan. Granite formations like Chimney Rock, a three-sided tower, have earned the region a cult following among trad climbers and hikers. Access the high country via the Horton Ridge trailhead.
In winter, cross-country ski to a frozen waterfall or watch the annual Priest Lake Sled Dog Race in early February. There’s snowmobiling for the mild and wild, with groomed trails around the entire lake as well as alpine boondocking.
Small communities around the lake keep life comfortable. You’ll never miss a tee time at the Priest Lake Golf Course, which winds through a peaceful forest with rolling hills, ponds, and wetlands. Head to Coolin for dinner at the Floating Restaurant, seasonally serving fresh fish and local beef. Even stopping by the iconic Leonard Paul mercantile while running errands feels quaint and laid-back. Whenever you visit—or if a visit turns into a longer stay—Priest Lake has a way of making you feel like you got the timing just right.

Missoula
& THE BITTERROOT

If you like your outdoor town with a little funky energy on the side, Missoula delivers. The University of Montana keeps the city young and passionate—11,000 students in a town of 77,000 is a ratio that makes a dent. The university is known for its programs in natural resources and conservation, and it’s easy to see where the inspiration comes from.
When class is out, Brennan’s Wave draws surfers to the Clark Fork all summer. Montana Snowbowl and Lost Trail keep skiers busy all winter. Boating the rivers and creeks fills in the rest of the calendar. When the body needs a break, natural hot springs are within easy reach.
The mountains may be calling, but there’s also plenty to do in town. Stop in Betty’s Divine for handpicked vintage, Three Bales Home Supply for minimalist luxury, or Soul City Dry Goods for gifts. Families can spot rare species at the Missoula Butterfly House or drop in for daily storytime at the award-winning library. A handful of serious galleries anchor the arts scene, including the contemporary Radius Gallery, which is showing ledger art by Indigenous artists throughout 2026. The restaurant scene has range: 1889, named in honor of the
year Montana was established, serves up local steak and fish, while chefs at The Camino make tortillas in-house from heirloom corn grown in Mexico.
Head south on Route 93 to the Bitterroot Valley, famous for blue-ribbon fishing and stunning landscapes. Eight towns, home to about 47,000 people, sit between the Bitterroot and Sapphire mountains. Stevensville, Montana’s oldest town, neighbors a wildlife refuge with 260 bird species. Hamilton looks like the Old West and yet is home to one of the state’s most advanced hospitals. Blodgett Canyon offers serious rock climbing on 1,000foot granite walls. Trapper Peak, the highest point in the Bitterroots, is the kind of mountain you end up climbing after looking at it on the skyline day after day. And of course, the Bitterroot River could keep an angler busy for several lifetimes. Here, rural doesn’t mean sleepy.
The Blackfoot, Bitterroot, and Rattlesnake Rivers all flow toward Missoula, eventually finding their way to a confluence with the Clark Fork. Historic and modern, wild and urban, college town and cattle country—this region has a way of merging all the best aspects of Montana.

RIVERS TRAILS SKIING WIDE-OPEN VALLEY ACCESS

Cutbanks and Cutthroat: Fishing the Legendary Bitterroot
With roughly 1,000 trout per mile, the Bitterroot River outpaces most Montana fisheries by a wide margin. Landing a fish is never guaranteed, but with epic insect hatches and Highway 93 running parallel to the river, you’ll have every chance.
A Class I river, the Bitterroot is great for boating. Despite the size of its watershed, it feels like a stream when you’re wading it, proving easy to cross and navigate. From the confluence of the East and West Fork Bitterroot Rivers to Hamilton, the river has a steeper gradient with consistent riffles, pools, and eddies—a prime westslope cutthroat stronghold. Between Hamilton and Stevensville, the valley eases into a low-angle floodplain, causing the river to slow, braid, and warm. Rainbows and browns lurk in woody debris, logjams, and cutbanks. Backchannels yield northern pike or largemouth bass.
Every fly shop will have recommendations to match the hatch, and knowing the bug schedule will improve your
chances of luring in 15- to 20-inch trout. The Bitterroot has some of the most prodigious hatches in the state in terms of volume and diversity.
The legendary skwala stonefly emerges in late March, crawling along exposed rocks before snowmelt raises the river, preferring snowy, cloudy days to hatch. Blue-winged olives and March browns follow close behind. There’s no easing into fishing season here; layer up and get out early.
After spring runoff, a smorgasbord of insects hatch: salmonfly, goldenstone, caddis, pale morning dun, and green drake. Late summer heat suppresses feeding except at dawn and dusk, when trico clouds and the unpredictable hecuba draw fish up. Fall brings the mahogany hatch, persisting until the first snow that sticks. Winter nymph fishing carries you through until the cycle begins again.
At the end of the day, the views of the Bitterroot and Sapphire Mountains are reason enough to be on the water— whether or not you can tempt a fish onto the line.

Cold Smoke, Hot Tracks: Live Music at KettleHouse
Missoula is a music town with deep roots. The first major show on its books was the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1921 at the iconic Wilma, and the city has been serious about live music ever since. Intimate neighborhood venues thrive all across town, providing a platform for local artists. On campus, the Adams Center has seen names like Bob Dylan and Luke Bryan, while the Washington-Grizzly Stadium is hosting Post Malone this summer, and the Dennison Theatre is home to the Missoula Symphony. The vibe is DIY-punk-underground meets highbrow art meets genuine country, and with this range, there’s a venue for everybody.
But the pièce de résistance is KettleHouse Amphitheater, situated on the banks of the Blackfoot River in Bonner, just outside Missoula. Over the past decade, this venue has earned a reputation that goes well beyond “good for Montana”—it’s on a path to give Red Rocks and The Gorge a run for their money.
Turn off Highway 200 onto Cold Smoke Drive, and the wood-paneled amphitheater is the first thing you’ll see. There’s just something about the river, the sunset, the crowd singing together, and your favorite band that adds up to something bigger. Holding 4,250 across the standing pit, stadium seating, premium boxes, and a grassy sloping lawn, the amphitheater feels intimate enough to lose yourself in the music, but it can build energy like a much bigger venue. The 2026 lineup includes Bonnie Raitt, Lord Huron, Mt. Joy, and Big Thief, backed by world-class sound and a riverside setting that does its part.
The food is half comfort, half fuel, feeding the body and soul so you can keep dancing all night. Are you feeling chocolate churros, Frito chili pie, or the grain-and-greens “dope salad” from Worden’s Market? It all pairs well with a cold scotch ale.
Stop by the taproom even when there’s not a band. KettleHouse has been one of Montana’s favorite craft breweries for a reason, and the Blackfoot River is always headlining.

Yellowstone NATIONAL PARK

Predators & Prey
Yellowstone is a land of extremes. Only the hardiest bacteria can survive in a habitat like acidic, bubbling mudpots. Other habitats—like the sagebrush steppe, deep river canyons, and dappled lodgepole forests—support 250+ bird species as well as the largest concentration of mammals in the lower 48 states, including eight grazing ungulates and seven large predators.
Good road access and plenty of wide-open country make for some of the best wildlife watching in the states. A dash of patience and dollop of perseverance is the price of admission—and not all of Yellowstone’s wildlife make themselves easy to find. You’d count yourself
among a lucky few to see an elusive wolverine or lynx. But the good news is that the more commonly sighted animals have a way of making you forget all about that.
Our advice: try to think like the animal. Where would you be this time of day, in this season? Where would you be looking for your next meal? Whether you turn to your phone, guidebook, or gut, suddenly Yellowstone’s residents feel a little less like tourist attractions and a little more like neighbors. Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks are part of the same 2,000-mile Rocky Mountain ecosystem, and every animal you encounter here is a thread in a much larger web that you are part of, too.

Bison (Bison bison)
It’s hard to visit Yellowstone without seeing these iconic bovids, but if you want to be sure not to miss them, head straight for the Hayden and Lamar Valleys. Bison are the largest land mammal in North America, and Yellowstone hosts the most free-roaming bison biomass in the United States. With about 5,000 of them on the landscape, most visitors come home from Yellowstone with a bison story. Visit in winter and the snow-covered landscape becomes a diary of their days. Follow their tracks, and you might find yourself at a hydrothermal basin, where grazers gather in wintertime. Look closely, and you’ll notice divots in the snow where they used their huge heads to shovel away snow in order to graze on the dry grasses and sedges preserved below.
Elk (Cervus canadensis)
If you visit Mammoth Hot Springs during the fall rut, you might hear the sound of crashing antlers and trumpet-like bugles even before you see elk. Bulls arrive at the rut carrying six months’ worth of antler growth, and they’re not shy about using them. Sporting photogenic bone growth and cotton-ball bottoms, elk are the most abundantly found mammal in Yellowstone. Their summer population ranges between 10,000 and 20,000 individuals, forming up to seven distinct herds. Only 2,000 or so winter in Yellowstone—and if they survive, it’s against all odds. Elk provide 85% of winter wolf kills and are an important food source for bears, mountain lions, bald eagles, and more. You’ll tend to see them in the same places as bison.
Wolf (Canis lupus)
In Yellowstone, a wolf sighting is the holy grail. About 100 wolves live in Yellowstone, and every single one represents a historic success story. Like bison, they have survived despite decades of extermination efforts in North America. Thirty years ago, the reintroduction of this top predator in Yellowstone restored an essential connection in the web of life. When you’re visiting, follow the prey, and eventually you’ll find the predator. If you’ve seen bison or elk, you know where to go. After a wolf kill, ravens and magpies are the first to arrive at the feast for a nibble here and there. Coyotes wait back for the wolves to gorge themselves silly, but if a bear catches a whiff, they usually aren’t as deferential. Once all the predators are fed, smaller and smaller animals get suitable scraps. So if you’re lucky enough to see a wolf kill, keep your eyes peeled for others to arrive at the table.
Bozeman MONTANA

Walong with famous cold-smoke powder and a non-profit operational model, makes Bridger one of the most beloved ski areas in the West.
hether viewed from your kitchen window or the scenic overlook at the end of a hiking trail, Bozeman is a beautiful place to be. East of the Continental Divide but still nestled in the mountains, this is the best of both Montana’s worlds.
With about 60,000 residents living in Bozeman and its neighbor Belgrade, this Southwest Montana economy thrives on tourism, technology industries, and manufacturing for the outdoor industry. With a student population of 17,000, Bozeman is really a college town at heart.
Founded as a land-grant agricultural school, Montana State University has grown into one of the West’s most respected research universities. Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport—Montana’s largest, with 20+ nonstop flights—makes the city as connected to the rest of the world as it is to nature.
There’s something about an outdoors town that helps adults reconnect with their inner child. For many Bozemanites, Bridger Ski Area is the reason to be here. Storied terrain on the Ridge and Schlashman’s Bowl,
The Madison, Gallatin, and Yellowstone rivers give anglers three very good reasons to live here. With 11 waterfalls that are easy to hike to, Hyalite Canyon adds world-class ice climbing to the mix. Nearby, West Yellowstone and Cooke City draw snowmobilers from across the country, with hundreds of miles of trails through a stunning ecosystem. When it comes time for rest, find some healing waters at the hippie hot springs in Norris or the full-service resort in Chico.
Downtown, there’s a strong craft brewery scene with trivia nights and live music. Roasteries like Treeline and Ghost Town keep the city well-caffeinated. The restaurant scene has earned national attention, including multiple James Beard semifinalists in 2026. Blackbird Kitchen’s artisan pizza and wine list always hits the spot, while Wild Crumb’s fresh fruit tart is worth planning your weekend around.
The Gallagator Trail winds through town along a creek and old rail track, connecting neighborhoods to parks, green spaces, and trailheads. The sculpture garden at the Bozeman Public Library offers the perfect break during lunchtime. In summer, the days are long, and the parks are full of events like the Sweet Pea Festival or farmer’s markets.
Many visitors pass through on their way to Yellowstone. The ones who stop tend to stay longer than they planned— Bozeman has a way of turning a layover into a lifestyle.

Backyard Bozeman: Designing with Intention
With abundant sunshine and a big sky to enjoy, backyards in Southwest Montana shouldn’t be an afterthought. They’re a design priority. Whether you’re breaking ground or refreshing your space, these five details are worth getting right:
Location, Location, Location: Do you have a view of the Bridger Range or Tobacco Roots? Situate cozy lounge seating to watch storms and the sunset play out in the mountains. Think about where you’d want to spend a few minutes with your coffee before everyone else wakes up. Make sure that additions like a pergola or shrubbery won’t block any views. Bring in the Elements: Including a firepit, water fountain, and a wind chime will transform how you experience the space. A firepit is the backyard’s natural gathering point, the place where conversations spark. Running water and a wind chime provide a tranquil ambiance. Together, these elements engage all the senses.
Native Plants: Intentional landscaping can also help ground you to the space. Pair striking colors like vibrant, tubular purple Rocky Mountain Beardtongue and Blanketflower, a member of the sunflower family
with red, yellow-tipped petals. Native plants support biodiversity by providing food and habitat, and they’re well adapted to Montana’s dry, cold climate.
Dark Sky Design: Keep your space safe and cozy at night without polluting your view of the Milky Way. Light specific paths and zones rather than the whole space, and choose fixtures that direct their light downwards. Use warm, low-lumen bulbs. And with 15 hours of daylight in summer, you might also need less lighting than you think.
Gear Storage: If you live in Bozeman, chances are you have a gear collection. Storage systems don’t have to be complicated to work. One tried-and-true method is to divide gear by activity and store it in well-labeled, identical bins on heavy-duty shelving. If you have a shed in the backyard, make sure it’s easily accessible from the house and parking area so that everything will end up where it belongs.

Bobcat Pride:
Montana State Football Champs
In Bozeman, blue and gold run deep. Walk around downtown or campus, and you won’t have to wonder what the mascot is. Bobcat logos are everywhere— down to the grocery store’s tiles.
So when Montana State made a run at the FCS Championship this year, everyone was watching. Three finals appearances under head coach Brent Vigen, and still no title, a drought that began in 1984.
What went down was one of the most intense championship games in FCS history, the first to go into overtime. We entered the fourth quarter with a solid 28-14 lead, but Illinois State fought back with two touchdowns, tying the score. With just over a minute left in the quarter, the Redbirds tried to clinch the title with a field goal, but the Bobcats blocked it. “GO CATS GO!” and the unofficial anthem, “Mony Mony,” echoed from Bobcat Stadium to living rooms in every corner of the state.
In overtime, Illinois State scored first, and the pressure
landed squarely on Bozeman’s favorite quarterback. Justin Lamson found wide receiver Taco Dowler for the gametying score—a throw that dominated every highlight reel. Colby Frokjer’s single point conversion sealed the win. Final score: 35-34. For Vigen, the athletes, and every fan who had waited 41 years, this title showed the rest of the country what Bobcat Nation already knew.
The next day, thousands of people flocked downtown for the parade, featuring MSU Spirit of the West Marching Band. Any Cats fans who weren’t there in person were analyzing the plays on the chairlift or in the school pickup line.
As Dowler said at the celebration, “What we built together was never just about football. It was built on character, accountability, toughness, and representing the state the right way... This isn’t for Bozeman, it’s not just for MSU, it’s for the whole state of Montana and the Blue and Gold.”

Big Sky MONTANA

The blue-ribbon Gallatin River churns through the canyon, crashing against towering rock formations and pooling in their eddies. Follow it south from Bozeman, up the alpine valley toward Lone Peak. You’ll know it when you see it. This is Big Sky.
Founded by journalist Chet Huntley in the late 1960s, Big Sky has grown from a long-shot vision into one of the most celebrated mountain destinations in the country. The crown jewel of the Madison Range, Lone Peak towers over the valley and delivers some of the most renowned extreme terrain in the U.S., from the Moonlight Basin Headwall to the succinctly named Big Couloir. But Big Sky Mountain Resort is more than a destination for experts. Groomed intermediate trails wind across the mountain, beginner areas are scenic and mellow, and the base village offers the full amenities of an international resort. Fresh off the completion of the multi-year Big Sky 2025 plan, skiers now enjoy new and faster lifts, expanded snowmaking, and the addition of a European-style Umbrella Bar for après.
Three zones make up Big Sky: the mountain, the meadow village, and the canyon. For an unincorporated community of about 3,000 year-round residents, it’s remarkably well-appointed: walkable, postcard-pretty, and quietly sophisticated. Restaurants range from refined to

The arts scene punches well above its weight. The Big Sky Artists Collective showcases 31 artists working in photography, drawing, ceramics, and mosaic. The Warren Miller Performing Arts Center draws speakers like Ira Glass, comedians like Tig Notaro, and musicians like Chris Thile and the Kronos Quartet, a full calendar by any town’s standards.
Gear shops and the BASE community fitness center keep the valley supplied and in shape. Local trailheads access the Gallatin National Forest, Yellowstone National Park, and the Lee Metcalf Wilderness. Beehive Basin is a yearround favorite, perfect for dog walks in summer and wild powder in winter. For people who live to golf half the year and ski the rest, Big Sky is home to some of the world’s finest private clubs. The Spanish Peaks Mountain Club offers ski-in/ski-out access to Big Sky, and the Yellowstone Club has its own private lifts. Both boast Tom Weiskopfdesigned golf courses that wind through meadow and forest with the rugged mountains in the background.
Altogether, this provides a quality of life that surprises newcomers and keeps them around.

Ennis
MONTANA

Situated between the Tobacco Root, Gravelly, and Madison mountain ranges, Ennis is the centerpiece of the Madison River Valley. A bit off the beaten path, the trip is worth every mile.
Known today as a working cowboy town with a serious fishing habit, the community traces its roots to 1863, when William Ennis began homesteading these sagebrush grasslands on the banks of the Madison. In Ennis, fifthgeneration ranchers and globe-trotting anglers pull up bar stools at Willie’s Distillery and raise a glass to the river. If you fish, Ennis was already on your bucket list. The Madison is one of the most celebrated fly fishing rivers in the country. The mountain scenery alone sets this river apart, but it’s also home to a famously high count of healthy rainbows, brown trout, native westslope cutthroat trout, and mountain whitefish, among others. Born at the confluence of the Firehole and Gibbon Rivers in Yellowstone National Park, the river’s headwaters are high-altitude, pristine, and geothermal. The iconic 50-mile Upper Madison, between Quake Lake and Ennis Lake, is fast, turbulent, and technical, but the possibility of trophy trout makes the currents worth navigating in the wade-only

sections. Below the Ennis dam, Beartrap Canyon invites not anglers but Class V whitewater boaters. The slower, broader Lower Madison, a brown trout stronghold, carves a wide path through a rugged, arid valley. 183 miles from its headwaters, in Three Forks, the Madison meets the Gallatin and Jefferson and becomes the mighty Missouri. In Trout Town, USA, the river backs up the name.
This small town of 1,000 knows how to build local culture. The Ennis Rodeo has been a community staple since the 1950s. Celebrating its 40th year in 2026, the annual Hunters Feed is a street festival held on the Friday before opening day of rifle season, where participants serve wild game samples and compete for best chili, best non-chili, most unusual, and best overall. Swing by the mid-August Fly Fishing Festival, with speakers, demos, and live music, to get drawn into conversations about flies and favored fishing holes. Even when there isn’t an event, downtown Ennis will draw you in, maybe for an elk burger, rye on the rocks, and tall tale at the saloon.
With an Old West atmosphere, rural charm, and majestic landscapes, Ennis is a place to write home about—unless, of course, it is home.

Billings & RED LODGE

Billings is cut from a different cloth than our other regions. South-central Montana is plains country, with arid grasslands and sagebrush steppes terminating in flat horizons. Watching sunsets and storms play out on this sky might just cure you of your nightly scrolling habit. A vibrant slice of animal and plant life flourishes along the Yellowstone River, protected by the 80-million-year-old sandstone formations.
With a population of 120,000, Billings is the largest city in the state, with another 50,000 residents in the surrounding Yellowstone County. The Magic City laid down its cosmopolitan roots early in the railroad era, and has been a key trade and distribution hub for Montana, Wyoming, and the Dakotas ever since.
Downtown Billings is walkable and well-shaded by a canopy of ash and spruce. For a quick lunch, swing by Mediterranean Soul for shawarma. For a white-tablecloth kind of night, The Marble Table specializes in elegant comfort food. The house-made Hollenbeck Ranch lamb meatloaf is a must-try. Commission a made-to-order cowboy hat at Rand’s, find the perfect locally crafted gift at Frae Collective, and pick up a fresh read at This House of Books. Running errands feels like touring a
gallery of street art, and you’ll come to appreciate the murals, sculptures, and light installations you see regularly. The Yellowstone Art Museum is Montana’s largest contemporary art museum. With new exhibitions every month and free admission for county residents, it’s the kind of place that builds a community of regulars.
But the mountains aren’t too far away. The iconic U.S. Route 212 switchbacks 5,000 feet from Red Lodge up to Beartooth Pass. Open only in the summer, this road climbs into a striking alpine tundra characterized by ancient geology and an abundance of small glacial lakes. Up the West Fork of Rock Creek, Red Lodge Mountain has panoramic views of the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness. Time your storm cycle right, and you’ll enjoy low-density cold smoke powder in steep trees with a laid-back atmosphere—something hard to find these days. The Beartooth Basin Summer Ski Area opens in late May, with a poma lift service to a lingering snowpack on a high-elevation, north-facing headwall.
Billings and Red Lodge don’t have much in common on the surface, but spend time in both of these southcentral Montana towns, and you’ll find people who choose where they live deliberately.

Downtown: Red Lodge
Up the scenic Clark Fork Yellowstone Valley and at the edge of the Beartooth Mountains, Red Lodge is equal parts destination and base camp. You’ll want to strike a balance between getting into a slower pace of life and packing your itinerary.
Historic Downtown: Most of the buildings downtown in the Red Lodge Historic Commercial District are over 100 years old. You’ll find everything on Broadway Avenue, from the Montana Candy Emporium to Bone Daddy’s Custom Cycle. The Art Deco Roman Theater, built in 1917, still runs a single evening showing and a Sunday matinee.
Museums: The Carbon County Historical Society and Museum tells the story of the town’s immigrant roots and mining origins. The Historic Whitcomb Garage displays seven pre-World War II vehicles— the same buses and touring cars that once shuttled Northern Pacific Railroad passengers over the Beartooth Highway to Yellowstone National Park. Parks and Recreation: On a weeknight after work or a casual Sunday afternoon, there’s disc golf at Coal Miners Park, pickleball at Field School Park, and kickflips at Hellroaring Skate Park. Rock Creek,
a blue-ribbon trout stream, flows directly from the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness through town. In fact, the wilderness area is practically in your backyard. Galleries: Beartooth Gallery is the premier fine art collection in Red Lodge, but this arts district is not a one-stop shop. Don’t miss Kevin Red Star’s gallery, Back Alley Metals, or the Red Lodge Clay Center.
Date Night: There are tough decisions to be made between spots like Piccola Cucina kitchen at Ox Pasture for artisanal Italian, Marli’s for craft cocktails in the glamorous historic Pollard Hotel, or One Legged Magpie for seasonally driven fine dining. Annual Events: The 10th annual Red Lodge Songwriter Celebration fills eight downtown venues with 26 songwriters over eight shows in June. In July, the Home of the Champions Rodeo returns for its 97th year. Winter brings the Red Lodge Mountain ski season and a lively après scene.
Peak Summer:
111 Years of MontanaFair

There’s something so nostalgic about the fair at sunset: neon rides lit up against the darkening pastel sky and a warm summer breeze carrying the smell of funnel cake, fried Oreos, and corn dogs. MontanaFair has been delivering that feeling (albeit
The Exhibitions: About 10,000 people will earn cash and ribbons for entries ranging from beer to bunnies and crochet to cattle. Those who distinguish themselves and earn a blue ribbon leave with their hard work affirmed, continuing a long tradition.
The Entertainment: Stages offer free entertainment all day, including kids’ entertainment, hypnosis, and character actors like circus-comedian Paz the Sports Guy. All your classic fair rides are there, with the Thomas Carnival operating the midway with rides and games. Three nights of concerts and three nights of rodeo round out the schedule.
The History: In 1916, the Midland Empire Fair began bringing people from across Montana and
not always with corn dogs) for over a century. These days, the fair brings nearly a quarter of a million people together at MetraPark for nine days, beginning the second weekend in August. Some traditions only get better with time.
the surrounding states to Billings for the finest agricultural, livestock, and industrial exhibits ever seen. As the fair’s reputation for excellence in livestock grew, so did the attention of horse racing and rodeo stars. Over the years, the name evolved: it was the Yellowstone Exhibition for about 14 years before becoming MontanaFair in the 1960s.
The Venue: The fairgrounds auditorium was tragically lost to a fire in 1969, but in 1975, a new year-round facility opened, MetraPark, also known as the Metra: Montana Entertainment Trade and Recreation Area. With hundreds of thousands of square feet for the fair, as well as improved arenas for rodeo, live music, and more, this new venue set the stage for the next century of MontanaFair.
