MAIN INTRO ontana is many things: the quiet serenity of sunrise in Glacier National Park. The joyous energy of a college town on game day. It’s a rich history that begins with the Tribes who once hunted, fished, and revered these lands, and it will move forward with 21st century innovation that continues to grow and strengthen our local economies and industries. If you’ve spent any length of time here, you know that Montana sets a standard in both outdoor recreation and quality of life that few other places can match. At PureWest Christie’s, we know that just as a house is not a home, real estate is not a transaction. It’s a relationship based in people and places, knowledge and trust. Our agents are also your neighbors, your fellow board members, your volunteer coaches, and ski lift companions. We live in and love our communities and we put that intimate knowledge to work for you. If life takes you away from Montana, we’re here for that, too. PureWest Christie’s is a leader in the real estate industry and our affiliations with Christie’s International Real Estate and Leading Real Estate Companies of the World mean that we can deliver exceptional results around the globe. We can help you relocate anywhere, but we have to admit that Montana is nearest and dearest to our hearts. Whether you’re considering moving across the country or 4

from Eureka to Livingston, we have the local agents with the expert knowledge to help you buy and sell with ease. The following pages showcase distinguished Montana homes across the state and highlight what makes each of our local PureWest communities special and unique. Did you know that Bozeman is named for John Bozeman, who blazed a spur line from the Oregon Trail to the gold rush town of Virginia City before being gunned down, most likely by his business partner? Or that Flathead Lake’s Wild Horse Island is home to a herd of bighorn sheep in addition to its namesake horses? While this magazine barely scratches the surface of what makes the Treasure State a true gem, we hope you enjoy the peek into our communities, their history, and their future.

ou opened Tupelo Grille in Whitefish in 1995, after operating a restaurant in Jackson, Wyoming. But how did you end up out west in the first place? PC: I got a job in Yellowstone in the summer of ’85. My brother had gotten a job and was there for about two weeks before he convinced me to come out. [That brother, Kevin Carloss, eventually opened Cafe Zydeco in Bozeman, Billings, Helena, and Missoula, and still 10

My brother picked me up and we were going to Mammoth, so we drove north through the Tetons, through Yellowstone, to Gardiner, all in one day. We got to Gardiner and I was like, “Done.” Seriously. I had been to the Appalachians, but I’d never been out west. I was hooked. 1,000

percent. That summer I worked in the employee dining room, slopping food, no idea I’d ever be in a kitchen as a living. So how did you get into the restaurant business? PC: A classmate of mine from Southwestern Louisiana [now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette] was managing a restaurant in Breckenridge. I went to see him in the spring after I graduated from college, and it planted the seed.

the hardest thing “ Gunsight’s I ever did, by far, because of the timing. ” We took over the lease of a turnkey restaurant space and we opened The Acadian House, a little Cajun restaurant. I did the cooking. Then, after four years, he bought me out and we moved to Whitefish. And did you cook at Tupelo as well? PC: Yep, when we first opened, Tupelo was a third of the size it is now. We did lunch and dinner, we didn’t have a liquor license, it was just my wife and me and maybe three

people. It was tiny, maybe seated 50. I was the chef for probably 6 years, then moved into being the general manager. You opened two restaurants within a year, Abruzzo in Whitefish in late 2017 and Gunsight Saloon in Columbia Falls in June of 2018. What was that like? PC: We were already working on Gunsight, then Truby’s moved out of the space that’s now Abruzzo, so we did a quick remodel there and got P U R E M O N TA N A

that open in December [of 2017]. Then in January we were back in Columbia Falls doing that remodel. Gunsight’s the hardest thing I ever did, by far, because of the timing. We really needed to get open for summer, we had just spent a decent amount of money on Abruzzo, and we were about to spend a ton on that remodel. Both of them took off, hopefully it’s going to do the same here in Kalispell. What motivated you to expand //

proving ground. There's been tons of restaurants since we opened 26 years ago and it never hurt our business. It only helps. It makes people want to stay in your town, the locals too. Tupelo, Gunsight, and Mercantile Steak have all been extensive remodels. Is this a theme for you? PC: I love rehabbing these old buildings, even though it’s a nightmare. I love turning a potential cool, old space into something more, something people respond to, hopefully. Give it an atmosphere, give it life. Here [in the historic Kalispell Mercantile building] we have the high tin ceilings, the back bar, the open rafters, the patio, the old elevator, the Tiffany lamps. It’s really the space that almost dictates what we’re going to do with the food. We’re going to do steak, but this could be a good Tupelo, too, it feels nostalgic or maybe a little southern in here. You’ve seen a lot of growth

to Columbia Falls? PC: Downtown, there wasn’t a lot going on. I think every town needs a big, happy gathering place. It had the potential with the old buildings, and Ruis [Mick Ruis, a local investor and developer] was investing a lot, that helped. And O’Brien [O’Brien Byrd, who owns O’Brien’s Liquor store and refurbished the lot behind it for the community market] had a lot to do with it, telling me, “We need this.” And what’s attracting you to Kalispell now? PC: I love downtown, I think people are friendly. I love the architecture down here, I really do. The neighborhoods are awesome. I just think there's room. There's definitely room for growth. These other places are only going to help us, the breweries and all that. I believe you have to create an energy, and I think the more choices you have in a downtown, the better. I mean, Whitefish proved it. That was my

here in the last 25 years, and the Flathead Valley isn’t showing signs of slowing down. What do you hope for the future of the valley? PC: I hope it keeps its character, the friendliness. I feel that way here in Kalispell, Columbia Falls, and Whitefish. Hopefully, the character doesn't get too diluted. And I hope

it's not so transient. If things are going to develop, hopefully it's people who are going to stay, so you can maintain a sense of community. That's definitely what drew us to Whitefish was the sense of community. We moved to Whitefish and I was like, “Man, it's got everything you could want!” The lake,

the mountain, inexpensive golf. It checked all the boxes- the mountain biking, the park, flights coming in and out, the rivers. From day one, we felt accepted when we opened Tupelo. Same in Columbia Falls with Gunsight, hopefully it's the same in Kalispell. It's very positive here. People are still really positive.

“Far away in Montana, hidden from view by clustering mountain peaks, lies an unmapped northwestern corner—the Crown of the Continent.” So wrote famed naturalist George Grinnell in 1901, describing the land that would become Glacier National Park. Thanks to the preservation efforts of Grinnell and countless others, Glacier Park remains a rare North American jewel. Fun Facts: • The aptly named Triple Divide Peak, near Cut Bank, sends its waters to the Pacific, Atlantic, and Arctic Oceans. • Morning Eagle, the Lake Josephine tour boat, was hand-winched half a mile upstream on the creek between Swiftcurrent Lake and Lake Jo-sephine over six days in 1975. It hasn’t been moved since. • Each year, Rotarians from Canada and the U.S. honor the legacy of the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park by pledging to main-tain the peace between the two nations as they shake hands across the border.

Stay at Sperry Chalet

After Congress created Glacier National Park in 1910, the Great Northern Railway built nine chalets in and around the park to encourage tourism. Avalanches, fires, grizzly bears, and economics ruined six of them; by the late 1900s, only the Granite Park, Sperry, and Belton Chalets still welcomed guests. Sperry Chalet sits about six and a half miles and a (literally) breath-taking 3,300 feet above Lake McDonald, as it’s accessible only by hiking or horseback. The 2017 Sprague Fire tragically consumed the dormitory, but it was rebuilt with supplies brought in by helicopter and pack strings. For reservations and more information, visit www.sperrychalet.com

Paddleboard Lake McDonald

One of the best ways to explore Lake McDonald— or as the Salish People named it, The Big Lake in the Mountains—is by paddleboard. Standing above the water, you can easily take in the gorgeous rainbow of the lakebed, created as pieces of rocks from different geologic eras washed downstream, settling into the water the receding glaciers left behind. You may also spot submerged trees, swept into the lake long ago, and even some manmade objects. The remnants of an old ship, now known simply as the Fish Creek Bay Wreck, lie in less than 10 feet of water near the Fish Creek campground. Board and boat rentals are available in Apgar Village and from nearby retailers and outfitters.

Hike Red Rock Falls

Choosing a hike in Glacier can feel overwhelming, especially if not everyone in your group thinks that a 2,000-foot elevation gain sounds like a good time. From Many Glacier, on the east side of the park, Red Rock Falls is a great—and relatively flat—out-and-back hike for any group. It first passes Fishercap Lake, a known moose haunt, then arrives at Redrock Lake, with incredible views of Mt. Grinnell and Swiftcurrent Glacier. The sharp-eyed might even spot the fire lookout tower atop Swiftcurrent Mountain. At the head of the lake, small trails lead to different vantage points of the upper and lower falls.

Bike the Sun Road

When Congress established Glacier Park in 1910, only a few miles of rough wagon roads existed within its boundaries. Crews began surveying for a road across the Continental Divide, originally called the “Transmountain Highway,” in 1924. The surveyors had to climb 3,000 feet to get to their sites and often hung over cliffs with ropes to take measurements. But the hard work paid off: the Goingto-the-Sun Road, named for the nearby peak of the same name, opened in 1933. One of the best ways to soak in the magnificence of this engineering feat is in the spring by bike, before the road opens to cars. Bike and e-bike rentals are available in Apgar Village and from a variety of Flathead Valley businesses. P U R E M O N TA N A

o everything there is a season. Even railroad tracks. The Great Northern Railway first put Kalispell on the map when it drove the final spike into its new line in 1892. Now, almost 130 years later, those rail tracks are coming up as the city evolves once again, transforming the historic downtown line into the Kalispell Parkline Trail, a pedestrian and bike-friendly thoroughfare through the heart of town. city’s rail-dependent businesses have already relocated to the newly constructed Glacier Rail Park on the northeastern edge of the city, freeing up trailside lots for redevelopment. Parkline Trail itself, the city envisions 21st century mixed-use development framing the tree-lined path, as well as a summer splash pad for kids (and the kid in all of us). Bikers and walkers can easily hop from the trail to Main Street and back, opening up shopping and dining options for residents and visitors alike. hat has 772 acres of critical wildlife habitat, one mile of the Flathead River, and needs you? Okay, it’s not much of a riddle, but it is an amazing opportunity. The Bad Rock Canyon Conservation Project is a time-sensitive undertaking to protect a section of wetland and forest just outside of Columbia Falls on the east side of the Flathead River, currently owned by the Columbia Falls Aluminum

Company. Hidden in plain view, this land has a warm spring, a primitive hike and bike trail, and could be a prime location for housing development. However, this space is also an important connector between the Whitefish and Swan Mountains for wide-ranging carnivores, such as bears, mountain lions, and wolverines. It provides winter habitat for an elk herd and moose and is also P U R E M O N TA N A

a landing place for migratory birds, who can count on the warm spring if surrounding creeks and lakes are still frozen. Preserving this land will give future generations the opportunity to enjoy the wildlife and open spaces that make Montana special. The project is in its final fundraising push to secure matching funds for federal and state grants before the end of 2021. For more information, visit www.flatheadlandtrust.org. //

Work-Life Balance

How to incorporate a home office

W

hether you’ve planned your entire career around working from home or experienced that shift as one of the many surprises of 2020, there are several clever ways to have an office in your home without letting work take over your life. “We had a client that had a house with two master closets, so instead of utilizing both for closet space, they converted one to a small office. That was a nice use of space,” says Jennifer

Zetooney, partner and lead designer at Whitefish-based Zetooney Hanson Interiors. She explains that most people don’t really need all that much square footage in an office, but it is helpful to have a space that can be closed off from the rest of the house, whether it’s to keep the barking dog off your phone call or to be able to work without disturbing sleeping family members. When a dedicated space isn’t P U R E M O N TA N A

available, another great option is flexible built-in cabinetry. A built-in that looks like a tv cabinet can open to reveal a home office, with a slide-out desk for your laptop. Zetooney says that this type of built-in works almost anywhere, from a guest room to a living room, and can visually balance out a room’s existing features, like a fireplace. An added bonus: the ability to close the door, both literally and metaphorically, on your workday. //

WHITEFISH

THE HOMESTEAD S

tacy Smith was riding his bike on the back roads outside Whitefish when he first came across 300 beautiful acres between Farm to Market Road and the Stillwater River. He and his family had recently moved to Whitefish after years of vacationing in the area and the change had been wonderful for their quality of life. When Smith learned the river parcel went with The Homestead—1,400 acres of rolling forest and rocky cliffs to the west—he realized that he and his business partner Joe Worsham had a rare opportunity to create a community featuring the very best of what northwest Montana has to offer: large parcels situated so that each home would feel tucked away into its own corner of Montana wilderness, with unparalleled access to four seasons of outdoor recreation, and yet enjoy easy proximity to the amenities and activities of Whitefish. As a father of four himself, Smith and his partners

are taking special care to think through the amenities that will build community connection and make life at The Homestead as comfortable as it is beautiful, from an 1,100-square-foot general store stocking life’s little necessities to a reclaimed wood equestrian barn converted into a come-one, come-all gathering place. Smith’s enthusiasm for every corner of the property is limitless: driving through towering stands of pine and aspen, he points out the ducks and geese in the wetlands and describes the elk herd that routinely wanders through. Plans are underway to develop the acreage along the Stillwater into a river access site featuring a lounge area and ranges for both archery and trap shooting. He envisions paddleboards and fishing poles in Little Bootjack Lake, hiking, biking and limitless exploration, with families ending the day relaxing at the gorgeous “Waterfall Park” or the

communal lodge nestled in a breathtaking valley. “After what we’ve all experienced this past year, I’ve realized the importance of living life to its fullest,” Smith says. “This is a place for families, a place to make memories and enjoy the outdoors together. You can have the privacy of a mountain ranch and still be part of the incredible Whitefish community, which is only 12 minutes away. Then you factor in Whitefish Mountain Resort, Glacier National Park, and the Flathead National Forest—which borders The Homestead on two sides—and it’s really just an exceptional chance to have the best of everything.” The Homestead truly is a rare opportunity for Montana-style luxury. Its two existing homes, the stunning Sharptail Meadow and First Claim, are currently available, as well as presale opportunities on seven lots. The Kootenai even designed “sturgeonnosed” canoes, with the ends flared into underwater snouts, to better handle the sometimes-turbulent lake waters. Today, the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes work with Montana agencies to manage and preserve the health of the lake, ensuring that countless future generations can continue to camp, fish, boat, and live on this beautiful body of water.

Flathead Lake’s Mack Days Tournament

I

n a misguided attempt to improve kokanee salmon stocks in the Flathead watershed in the late 1960s, biologists introduced mysis shrimp, not realizing the shrimp would actually compete with the salmon for food. Another introduced species, lake trout, turned out to have a taste for both the shrimp and young salmon. The lake trout population exploded, edging out other native fish, including bull 52

trout and westslope cutthroat trout. It’s estimated that over 1.6 million lake trout now prowl the waters of Flathead Lake. Through this problem comes opportunity, in the form of the biannual Mack Days. Sponsored by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, the multi-week fishing tournament held each fall and spring offers big prize money to dedicated anglers. Lake trout

can grow to monster sizes, often reaching 15 to 20 pounds or more, which makes for some really fun fishing. The lunkers tend to hide in the deepest parts of the lake, but you don’t have to own your own downriggers to have a shot at hooking a tremendous trout: local fishing charters know the best spots and tricks for reeling in a big one. Exploring Wild Horse Island

T

he largest island in Flathead Lake, Wild Horse Island, is home to song-birds, waterfowl, raptors, eagles, mule deer, bighorn sheep and, as its name suggests, wild horses. Early explorers originally heard stories of the local SalishKootenai People pasturing horses on the island to keep them safe from raids, though the handful that now live there are mustangs imported

from wild herds in Utah. Because hunting is prohibited and the animals are accustomed to people, you might see an exceptionally large mule deer or get a close look at a bighorn ram as you hike. And it’s still good to be bear-aware: occasionally, a bear will swim out to the island for the apples and pears, remnants of orchards planted during the island’s homesteading era.

Except for a few private parcels, the 2,164-acre island is a state park, open to all for day use but accessible only by boat. Skeeko Bay, the most protected cove, is about a 90-minute paddle from Dayton, though you can land a boat almost anywhere around the island. Companies out of Somers, Lakeside, and Big Arm offer motor and human-powered boat rentals and guided trips to Wild Horse Island.

Welcome, Friends Great ideas for guest houses

“G

uest houses are an opportunity to tie in seamlessly to the architecture of the home, or to do something totally whimsical and fun that you wouldn’t do on your own home, but that you’re dying to do somewhere,” says Dave Radatti, co-owner of Mindful Designs, a Whitefish-based custom home builder. An example of that might be a mountain modern home with a guest house that’s an updated take on a red barn, but still looks like a structure that could have been on the property for decades. Radatti’s partner Jason Pohlman says that another option, one which works especially well on P U R E M O N TA N A

lake properties, is building a larger guest house that serves as the main entertainment and hangout space for the property, then making the owner’s living quarters smaller and more private. Owners might also consider creative ways to join the guest house to the main home, something that defines the separate spaces but also connects them. These can range from a simple covered patio breezeway to a small orchard or greenhouse, depending on the interests and personality of the homeowner. No matter what style you choose, though, the best thing about a guest house is the friends and family who fill it. //

downtown. The Bitterroot Valley extends southward from Missoula, with eight charming small towns lining this scenic stretch of Route 93. Life is a little quieter here, but these towns are growing and thriving, too, thanks to their deep community roots, their incredible location between the Selway-Bitterroot and AnacondaPintler Wilderness areas, and their proximity to the opportunities and economy of Missoula.

f you like your outdoors served alongside the funky energy of a college town, look no farther than Missoula. Locals and alums from far and wide enjoy football Saturdays at Washington-Grizzly Stadium, just upstream from where kayakers surf Brennan’s Wave on the Clark Fork River. Wintery weekends mean a trip to Snowbowl, or perhaps a perfectly frothed cappuccino at one of the city’s many local coffee shops to refuel while Christmas shopping

ecades of work to build a bike trail from Missoula to Hamilton paid off in 2016, when workers laid asphalt for the final eight-mile section from Lolo to Missoula. Now, cyclists can clip in at the north end of the trail in the Old Sawmill District of Missoula and enjoy a scenic, mostly downhill ride through Lolo, Florence, Stevensville, and Victor, ending south of Hamilton near the Angler’s Roost campground. 72

The trail runs between the rugged Bitterroot Mountains and the rolling Sapphire Mountains, providing beautiful views in all directions. When you need a break from the bike, throw in a line at one of the fishing access points along the Bitterroot River, including Travelers’ Rest State Park in Lolo, a historic Lewis and Clark expedition campsite. If you’ve got energy to spare, take a detour on the Stevensville River Trail into the town that grew from a Catholic mission into Montana’s first permanent settlement. A River Runs Through It

Filmmaking in Missoula

orman Maclean’s timeless 1976 novella, “A River Runs Through It,” is a beautiful and heart-wrenching tale of family and fly fishing, set in and around early 20th century Missoula. The 1992 movie, based on the book, starred Brad Pitt and earned four Academy Award nominations and one win, for Best Cinematography. The movie so perfectly captured the joy and timeless beauty found in Montana’s rivers that the fly fishing industry enjoyed a 30 percent bump in nonresident fishing licenses the year after it was released, and interest in the sport has remained high. The movie influenced real estate and tourism as well; the Montana Department of Commerce cited it as a priceless

influence on the state’s economy in the 1990s and beyond. In the nearly three decades since “A River Runs Through It” premiered, the film industry has continued to grow in Montana. It contributed $48 million to the state’s economy between January 2019 and June 2020, with Missoula sharing in this booming industry. The popular TV drama “Yellowstone” moved its filming from Utah to Missoula and the Bitterroot Valley in 2020. Shadowcast Partners, a Georgiabased studio company, is planning to build a $19 million Montana Media Hub, with 120,000 square feet of film and television production space, in the Missoula Technology Park north of the city’s airport.

Ideas for incorporating workout space at home

S

ince the pandemic shifted our exercise routines, many of us have come to appreciate the upside of working out at home: you can’t accidentally forget your shoes, showering afterwards is never awkward, and erasing the drive to the gym makes a little more time for other things, whether that’s a couple extra sets of curls or a quick postworkout nap.

But there’s nothing motivating about a crowded, cluttered space. The vibe of a workout area is just as important as the sets and reps that take place in it, and a welcoming space will definitely see more use. Shannon Callaghan, of Missoulabased Shannon Callaghan Interior Design, says that simplicity is best. “Eliminate all clutter and make your space workout-specific, so you have P U R E M O N TA N A

enough room to move and breathe and do your exercises,” Callaghan says. “If you can keep your space minimalist, with just your mat and weights or spin bike, it helps you focus on being in that space as your gym time. You can tell your family, ‘I’m going to the gym for an hour,’ and they know to leave you alone. Also, pick a room that has a window, if you can, because fresh air is really important while you exercise.” //

Getting Out

Yellowstone

“N

estled among the forest-crowned hills which bounded our vision lay this inland sea, its crystal waves dancing and sparkling in the sunlight, as if laughing with joy for their wild freedom. . . and we felt glad to have looked upon it.” In 1870, Explorer C.W. Cook described the land that would become Yellowstone for Western Monthly magazine. 151 years later, Yellowstone is still an awe-inspiring place of wild freedom.

Fun Facts: • At 3,742 square miles, Yellowstone is larger than Rhode Island and Delaware combined. • In the late 1800s, souvenir sellers coated memorabilia in travertine by immersing the items in Mammoth Hot Springs for several days.

• Though we often link this national park with Theodore Roosevelt, who spent two weeks here in 1903, President Ulysses S. Grant actually signed the law that made Yellowstone the first national park in 1872.

From above, America’s largest hot spring looks like an enormous multicolored geode, sliced in half to reveal its incredible rings of color. At the middle of the Grand Prismatic Spring, water emerges from the earth at temperatures up to 189 degrees, keeping the center sterile and giving it a pristine blue hue. The water cools somewhat as it flows outward, providing habitats for different kinds of thermophiles, heatloving microbes that color the green, yellow, orange, and red rings of the spring. Visitors can see the spring up close from the boardwalk or get a bird’s eye view from the recently constructed overlook platform.

Behold the Bison

Almost no one visits Yellowstone without experiencing a traffic snarl as a herd of shaggy, cudchewing bison meander obliviously in the road. Next time you’re bison blocked, though, take a moment to remember that this phenomenon is nothing short of a miracle: Yellowstone is the only place in the country where bison have lived continuously since prehistoric times. Even this herd nearly went extinct, hunted and poached down to two dozen animals, before park officials restored the population by introducing supplemental stock from private ranches. Around 5,500 bison now happily roam their ancestral home.

Hike to Lost Lake and Petrified Tree

This hike starts behind Roosevelt Lodge, built near the spot that President Theodore Roosevelt camped during his visit to the park in 1903. It climbs to Lost Lake with intermittent views over Pleasant Valley—and don’t miss the short spur to the 40-foot Lost Creek Falls. Continuing on past the lake takes you to Petrified Tree, a fossilized redwood from tens of millions of years ago. Thanks to a long history of volcanic activity, Yellowstone contains the largest concentration of petrified trees in the world, formed when eruptions quickly buried forests in mud and volcanic deposits.

Save Your Feet, Ride a Horse

The wide-open wilderness of Yellowstone invites visitors to harken back to the park’s roots. For the first 11 years, Yellowstone had no roads; all its hardy initial visitors were on horseback or foot. After exploring the park from the 21st century comforts of your car, what better way to contemplate the original Yellowstone than by horse? A variety of outfitters in and around Yellowstone will help you embrace your inner cowboy with trips of all lengths and interests. From wolf watching to fishing, an hourlong ride to several days in the backcountry, it’s time to saddle up and smell the sagebrush. P U R E M O N TA N A

sentiment that still holds true today. Though there are now faster ways to get to Bozeman than by bumpy wagon train, the unmistakable allure of this vibrant city hasn’t changed. From the wide-open vistas to the blue ribbon trout streams and world-class skiing, nature beckons in every direction. In town, Montana State University and a robust tech sector are the basis of a thriving economy and an energetic community with a lively food scene.

n the early 1860s, John Bozeman created the Bozeman Trail, an offshoot of the Oregon Trail, leading people from modern-day Wyoming to the Montana gold rush centered in Virginia City. He and two associates planned the beginnings of the town that bears his name in 1864, correctly anticipating the draw of the Gallatin Valley. A newspaperman of the era, W.W. Alderson, described it as, “one of the most beautiful and picturesque valleys the eye ever beheld,” a

hot soak on a cold day is a Bozeman tradition that’s older than the state of Montana. In 1879, local wagon and carriage maker Jeremiah Mathews opened Mathews’ Warm Springs, now Bozeman Hot Springs. The Bozeman AvantCourier enthused, “Mr. Mathew’s work may be considered one of the best possible things for the country and will undoubtedly be taken advantage of accordingly.” The paper was right, and other 88

hot springs soon followed. Today, the greater Bozeman area features several soaking options. West of town, Norris Hot Springs and Potosi Hot Springs offer different vibes, though both began as miners’ personal (and secret) hot tubs. Potosi is tiny and secluded, a hideaway in the Tobacco Roots Mountains. Norris has a livelier atmosphere, though the famed “Nudie Nights” of the past are no more; swimsuits are required. Springs and Yellowstone Hot Springs round out the geothermal hot spots. Chico began in 1900 as the Chico Warm Springs Hotel and has evolved with the times into a full resort and day spa with two large open-air hot springs pools. In 2019, Yellowstone Hot Springs opened—or reopened; the original hotel burned in 1916 and a later dude ranch fell into disrepair— and is now welcoming guests to its rebuilt pools with gorgeous Paradise Valley views.

Big Things Are Brewing in Bozeman’s Beer Scene

M

ontana’s breweries date back to the mid-1800s, when the combination of plentiful water, fields of wheat, and thirsty miners created a brewing explosion that continued to thrive across the state until Prohibition. Within the last decade, independent breweries have once again become big business in Montana. The craft scene in Bozeman is especially strong, with at least 10 breweries, a cider house, and a meadery currently operating in the

city, and several more spread across the region in Big Sky, Livingston, Belgrade, and Ennis. No matter your tastes in fermented beverages, chances are you can find a locally brewed version in and around the Gallatin Valley. Locals love the tried-and-true Midas Crush from MAP Brewing Company and the Yuppie Hammer from Outlaw Brewing. If your tastes run to the fringes, there’s also the Andsoit Gose sour ale at Bozeman

Brewing Company, Bozeman’s original craft brewery, or hard kombucha seltzer at Dean’s Zesty Booch. An added bonus to fancy beer is food to match: the entrees and snacks on offer at this new crowd of brewpubs resemble bar food in the same way that Bud Light resembles a Yamabiko Japanese rice lager from Mountains Walking. From oatmeal stouts to a good stout burger, great things are brewing in Bozeman.

We Are Family How to accommodate multigenerational living

PHOTO CREDIT: (BOTTOM RIGHT) BULL STOCK MEDIA

A

2021 study by Generations United found that multigenerational living has increased almost fourfold over the last decade. And while the pandemic was responsible for some of the uptick, 70 percent of the people surveyed report that they plan to continue with their living arrangements over the long-term. Van K. Bryan, founder of Studio Architects in Bozeman, points out that thoughtful design incorporates a variety of future possibilities, including your own. “People are interested in making sure that accessibility is paramount,” he says. “Whether that’s putting the primary bedroom on the main level—recognizing

that at some point we won’t be able to get around as well as we used to—or including semidetached guest quarters for aging or less ambulatory parents. We look at how we can provide people their own spaces, both inside and outside, so everyone can find some time to themselves.” Because it’s good to be together, but it’s also good to have some breathing room. Being prepared for whatever the future holds, whether it’s young grandparents moving in to provide fulltime childcare, elderly parents needing help close at hand, or kids moving back in during graduate school, starts with the design and layout of your home. For Your Eyes Only

Home privacy extends beyond fences and blinds

“I

t starts with the architectural design of the home, making sure the floor plan layout doesn’t position your bedroom looking into your neighbor’s kitchen,” explains Chad Rothacher, owner of RMR Group, a Big Sky-based general contracting firm specializing in custom homes. “It seems like a pretty simple idea, but it’s often overlooked. You should stand on the lot and design specifically for that lot.”

He goes on to explain that, even on a lot tightly placed between neighbors, there are easy design tricks to make a space feel private, such as placing tall windows higher up, where they let in plenty of light but look out at the tops of trees, not your neighbor’s deck. Homeowners can also improve the feeling of privacy on existing homes with thoughtful landscaping and careful placement of outbuildings. Firs and other conifers provide great P U R E M O N TA N A

year-round screening; a carefully constructed rock feature can look natural and also block unwanted views or road noise. Backyard buildings, like an outdoor sauna, can have good visual appeal and also easily hide an unsightly feature like an electrical utility box, or block the view from the neighbor’s backyard. Though the word ‘privacy’ can sound exclusionary, thoughtful touches like these actually make a home feel more inviting. //

SUN WEST RANCH, CAMERON

Sun West Ranch is a mountain paradise, gated ranch community with three miles of the world-famous blue ribbon Madison River, and only 55 homesites on 2,000 acres. The hand-picked building envelopes have unique attributes ranging from private timbered pieces with mountain peak views to bench lots with river views to wide, bright lots with panoramic landscapes. Board your horses at the equestrian center after exploring the 1,500 acres of common space on horseback or enjoy the same scenic trails on your bike or on foot. The ranch borders public lands with access to big game hunting in season and it is in the heart of fly fishing country. This is a special opportunity to own property under the Big Sky. 5.10 – 8.72 ACRES
